The staff is rude, and not helpful at all. The deli food is terrible. Taste funny. I will NOT shop here ever again.

It's overpriced for not so fresh produce. The mist spray does help. Selections a bit limited in the fresh department but some refrigeration improvements help. I like the organic section. My advice is to check the expiration date because I've bought a few items just to go home and find out that they've been expired. Items on and off the shelves. Their younger staff are nice but sometimes their veterans have their days. The addition of self-checkout stations are great. More casual than professional but I actually don't count that against them because it's a small town, local grocery store. I don't recommend their prepped sandwiches because we accidentally bought some with mold in it. When I told the girl at the counter, she responded that it happens and to just bring my receipt. I just want to bring attention to food expiration but all I get is an "Oh.. that happens" response without so much as an apology. I won't try any harder if they don't. Even though store has changed a bit, but I still don't trust their ready-made food. On the bright side, there are some things here that I can't get at the other stores in town. read more

Normally great but today we got a cooked tri tip that was only half cooked or less. Would have been 5 stars, but if we weren't at home and able to re cook it would have been wasted. This is the only bad experience I've had at the store, so that's why it's still 4 stars. read more

I got sick from supermarket sushi once. So I don't get any if there isn't a valid experation date on the package. For some reason the labels on the sushi at Mar Val no longer include any dates of any kind. The chef preparing the sushi had a lot of attitude today and that's just not necessary or appropriate. Unfortunately only option in Valley Springs other than Grocery Outlet. Very, very pricey which is strange being in this neighborhood which is not by any stretch well off. And for paying these outrageous prices, clerks are not even friendly as another reviewer stated. Been to deli several times - pay $$ for a sandwich but don't even get a thank you!!! Not sure why management does not have this corrected. I waited at deli today for several minutes. Clerk did not even acknowledge me so I left! Guess they know we don't have options so don't bother to improve? read more

Have been shopping at the Valley Springs store since 2008 and its odd how unlike Raley's in Jackson, Safeway in Jackson where the clerks and checkers not only are happy to see me, but know me by my name, yet none of the checkers at Mar-val in Valley Springs has ever gone out of their way to know me and treat me as a valued customer. The store prices on so many items are higher than even Raley's and Whole Foods. They have few natural food products, or vegan products. Having said that, the folks who work in the produce department are always so nice. read more

This place wasn't bad at all. Somewhat overpriced but what do you expect in a small town? All the items that you'll need for your camping/boating trip are there and the employees are super sweet. I ordered a sandwich from the deli that was on point~~BoarsHead turkey and pepperjack cheese with everything on it. Stay away from the chicken legs. They were a little tough, even after marinating for a couple hours. Weird. Oh-don't get camp firewood from out front of this store. Go down the road to Burson Market. It's the same cost for a box of wood vs. a bundle at Mar-Val. read more

What can you say it's practically the only grocery in town. It's dirty and so high priced rather drive to another town.

Mar Val vs. Grocery Outlet -- Mar Val has a better meat department, deli and bakery. Things like ready-to-eat fried chicken. Interesting breads. Some good specials; I purchased a case of water for only $2.50 recently. Grocery Outlet has much, much better prices, and a better frozen food selection. Their frozen food at least tends to be high fat, high sugar, and high salt. Reasonable dairy prices. Food selection changes often; sometimes food items will be there for a short time, then disappear forever. For locals I think Grocery Outlet will be their first choice because of the prices, followed by an occasional trip to Mar Val. For vacationers, Mar Val deli food might be a better choice. Glad to see some competition!! I hope this appears to be a balanced review. I have no ax to grind at either store!! read more

Just moved here from the city and maybe this store is pricy for the folks who were both and raised here but I found the prices to be cheaper than what I normally pay say at a Safeway and the quality of food like meats and produce is better than a lot of stores I've shopped at. I have been shopping at this store Over 17 years. Prices are too high and be careful of expired items in this store. Need to offer more coupons and specials on food, meat etc....i only shop here 1. if I'm cooking and missing something to complete. 2. Unexpected guess and needing extra whatever. Scott is outside barbecuing Tri-tip. This was absolutely the best Tri-tip I've ever had. So much flavor and very tender! Cooked perfectly!

I shop here most of the time. It is convenient for me and I'm familiar with where things are. It is expensive though. Especially the meat. But everywhere is expensive now I suppose. Good variety of items. read more

The tri tip they cook outside in the hot weather is EXCELLENT!!! I don't know if it's the seasoning or sweat off the people on the grill but it's great! The beer selection is nice. They also have $5 deals on Mondays. Great supporter of our community events and kids. read more

I don't know where they get their produce but it isn't very good. I had to laugh out loud the other day when I asked where the iceburg lettuce was. Clerks response was that there was a supply problem in Mexico and that it should hopefully be resolved soon. Remember the word Mexico. So I went to Grocery Outlet and had my pick of iceburg lettuce. Must have been 20 or more heads in the bin. Guess where they were grown and packaged and by who? Dole in the Salinas Valley. Need I say more! read more

Today was my final straw with this grocery store, specifically the deli!!!!! Have continually tried the deli and it's a huge disappointment... Between screwing up orders and terrible customer service you are in for a real treat! Most of deli workers appear to hate their life and every customer who dares bother them with an order. There is only one deli worker who is good,her customer service is great! All the others are rude,slow,and unfriendly. Had the unfortunate experience of going in today to place three sandwich orders, made the mistake of not watching them make the sandwiches got home to find out that they put Mayo on my sandwich! I cannot have mayo and specifically ordered it with none!!! 6.99 wasted on a sandwich I can't eat!! This is just one of a long line of issues with the pathetic deli service there! read more

I truly enjoy shopping at Mar Val, they always have what I need. The customer service is awesome. Everyone is so friendly.

This is always our last minute stop before heading over to my grandparents house in town. I always make lunch for them when we come over so usually we stop here for some last minute ingredients. While the selection is not huge they always seem to have what we need for our gluten free and dairy free meal. I have even spotted a gluten free dairy free cake here before in the frozen section! Overall customer service is always friendly. Cashiers always strike up a friendly conversation at check out. Then the bag boys always ask if you need help out to your car. Great service and good store for the retirement community that surrounds it. read more

Mar-Val in Valley Springs, California is a wonderful country grocery store that serves a small rural community. It is always fun to shop there as the store is always artistically decorated and with many interesting items such as the O.J. machine where you put oranges in to get fresh orange juice, scrumptious BBQ tri-tip cooking out front, a fresh-flower market, and lovely holiday decorations that really spruce up the shopping plaza. One reason they are so special is the manager, Mitch, has always been incredibly generous with the community. HThe store has supported so many fundraisers, such as 4-H; Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts; sport teams to name just a few! I have never seen a grocery store so supportive to its local community, and that alone makes it a great reason to shop there. Recently, Mitch - an exceptionally generous manager of the Valley Springs Mar Val store - supported the Boy Scouts with a kind gift of snacks for the scouts to snack on while a building community project. This kindness is very rare these days, and the generosity that Valley Springs Mar-Val gives is a delight. Also, there sandwiches are delicious and a good price, and the sushi (especially California rolls) is simply excellent. read more

Mar Val is the best grocery store we have in Valley Springs. Oh, wait... They're the ONLY grocery store in Valley Springs. Their selection is average, the produce is bad (not fresh), but the deli is top notch! Prices are just a tad higher than what you see at grocers in the valley. The staff is all very friendly, which makes up for the shortcomings. The young, heavy set girl with the dark hair in produce is extremely helpful! Mr. Z is always so fun to have ring you up, I'll stand in line for him and let other people go to the other lines, even if it means a wait. They have BBQ some days, right outside the door. Look on You Tube for a video about it. The sign says "NO Smoking within 50 feet of doors", but there just 6 feet away is a BBQ belching smoke from dozens of tri-tips all day. Come on, that's funny!! Only in Valley Springs.... I give them an extra star because they don't kick anyone out (or seem to care) if they're not wearing a shirt or shoes. Helpful for the people hanging out at Hogan all day, and need to run to the store for something real quick. You could complain... But just where are you gonna go? They're the only game in town. If Valley Springs ever got a Safeway or Smart Foods, Mar Val would be gone. read more
