I recently moved and needed a new blonde color stylist so my bestie recommended Mara Hair and Mode Studio. She has been seeing the owner Jana for 10 years and always has flawless hair. I needed to squeeze an appointment in between two long work trips so I booked with a junior stylist, Schuyler. The appointment process was a breeze and parking was too, directly behind the building. I had my small dog with me and everyone fawned over him the minute we walked in the door. The vibe at the salon is cheery, warm, and inviting. The eclectic decor and rich colors had a nice flow. My pup is a good boy and sat in his bed while Schuyler did a thorough consultation with me. I was in for partial highlights/babylights. Jana was at the next chair and periodically offered advice. Schuyler really took her time and was precise with her foil placement. What talent! Plus she's a sweetheart and we had great conversation about music and our various travels. I added a sunscreen/conditioning K18 treatment as I go pretty light blonde. I knew going into the appointment i needed to leave with wet hair due to my own time constraints but I was VERY pleased later that day when i got to see the true color and feel the smooth texture. Not only no, but really just don't do it. I do believe their master stylists and owner are talented, but there are a lot of junior stylists here and this is my worst hair experience. I'm not one to write bad reviews, but when I do, I'm pretty scathing pissed. This was my third time going here. The first time, things went really well -- I was happy with my hair, and they told me come back for a gloss in 5 weeks (went fine because it was just a gloss) and a highlight refresh in 10 weeks (disaster!). For my highlight appointment, I said, 1.) we could have used more coverage on my roots, maybe do a low light? 2.) I really only care about my roots -- the rest is fine. I got there at 9am, and for a partial highlight. We started the service at around 9:15am. It was 12:30pm by the time I left - and I was processing in bleach for 2+ hours. The lady rinsing me out was combing my hair and it just felt like something wasn't right as she was ripping the brush through my hair (root to end, not the other was around). I could feel that it was a tangly mess and it really hurt. When I got home is when the shock set it. My hair was so overprocessed and fried at the ends. It's full-on damaged. It's going to take a lot of time and effort (and chopping off dead ends) to get it back to baseline. My scalp is hot to the touch days later from chemical burns from the bleach. I don't know what the strategy was for a simple maintenance visit, but this is just totally ridiculous and I don't wish it on anyone. read more

Oh My God. My visit was today....I spent 370 for hair cut and "full balayage " and I am left with this....I just can see it now because of their COVID policy and I just can see fully my hair dry. I have seen 3 different stylists here for colour as well as cuts, and I have never walked away any less then feeling so fresh and beautiful. They are ALL extremely talented and great at what they do. My friend had recommended them to me and at first I was hesitant because it's a 45 drive for me and they are quite expensive, BUT they are both worth the drive and cost! I will not go anywhere else as I know without a doubt I will get EXACTLY what I want. Even if you go in unsure of what to get, you will walk out just glowing. This was my first visit here- referred to see stylist Yeny by a girl friend who praised her professionalism. I arrived on time and was not greeted. It was a cold welcoming. I was given attitude by Yeny that she couldn't complete the full highlight I was scheduled for because her assistant told her an incorrect appointment time. When I showed her my email with the correct appointment time, she left to check their system and came back to apologize. This should have been verified before making me feel uncomfortable and awkward. Yeny proceeded with my highlight, only to say, "we itemize our services" without providing price points. Also, the salon is so small. They only have two shampoo bowls. Instead of relaxing and enjoying my conditioning treatment- I was asked to move twice from the bowl. I'm not high maintenance, but after a long work day and paying what we do for hair care, I wanted to sit back and relax. I wasn't afforded this experience. I wasn't even offered a beverage until my "highlights" were complete. This is a customary offered when you enter a salon now. Even though Yeny was rude in her welcoming, she did give me a good hair cut. However a full highlight should have covered my roots. read more

I have been a client here for about five years- I have seen both Bre and Austin multiple times and have always had perfect cut and color. I've referred two friends here as well and they continue to be really happy. During the first year of the pandemic I was picking up hair color to go, which I am still so grateful for- it kept me from looking haggard on daily Zoom calls. I made a horrible mistake trying another salon this summer after my spouse *suggested* I should cut back on expensive hair services. You know how they say you get what you pay for? Well, I went to a very well known area salon that was a bit less expensive, and I was butchered. Hair color like tiger stripes, and a cut like Maria in the abbey in Sound of Music. I return to work next week and feel horrible. I cried for two days when I looked in the mirror - now I'm just avoiding mirrors totally until I go back to Mara this week to have them fix the hellacious cut and color I got. There isn't much hair left to cut, but I trust they will make it right until it grows out. Every time I went to Mara, I never had to think twice and I always felt confident about my hair. Jana is so kind and welcoming and Bre and Austin are both attentive, kind, and highly skilled. Their salon is better than the fancy DC salons I went to when I lived near the city. Their boutique and customer service are equally amazing. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Mara Hair & Mode Studio. I've been coming here for hair cuts & balayage for close to three years now, and have seen two different stylists. I continue to be blown away with the quality of each & every interaction I have with anyone here. I see Vivian and she is incredible, thoughtful, and so great at what she does! (Prior to Vivian, I saw Danielle who is equally amazing, but books up FAST due to her color expertise). I have been to PLENTY of high-priced salons in the area, and none even come close to comparing to Mara. It truly feels like you're walking into a family when you come through the door -- everyone is friendly and the place is warm and inviting (no glaring 'modern' salon with bright white lights here!). Folks, I have found my new salon. I have been to so many in NOVA with varying levels of success. I wanted to do something more colorful and fun with my hair so I really researched salons capable of doing this. And I found Mara Hair Studio! I booked a consultation with Kylie to talk about goals and then came back for my appointment a couple weeks later. Kylie was so great, talking me through each step and why it was important. And let's also talk about how precious the actual salon is. It's in an old townhouse so it's got such character and charm. All the stylists help each other out and jump in for extra hands, which is so nice to see. It makes it really feel like a friendly and supportive atmosphere. And I LOVED the end result of my hair!!! Gorgeous chocolate rose. A month or so later, I got it touched up but with more violet and I've been loving that too. This is 100% the salon I'm going to continue going to for all my cuts and color services. read more

TLDR: If you want the customer service to match the price tag, look elsewhere From the minute I scheduled my first appointment, the barrage of texts and emails started. I haven't been to your salon yet & you're asking me to spend money at a random event I have zero interest in? No. And you sent the same email twice, plus sent a text about checking my email for "important info" (that wasn't actually important), because some clients supposedly didn't receive it? Also no. I don't mind appointment reminders, that's why you have my info, but this is excessive. Even after unsubscribing, they kept coming. The final straw was when I received an email, text and phone call to confirm my appt within an hour of one another -- after I'd already confirmed my appointment twice. When I mentioned this to the woman on the phone, she told me they always do that. And I'm done. Cancelled my appt (which I'd confirmed four times prior to the call, seeing as I'd also replied to their text and clicked the email link the same day as this call) and the woman hung up on me mid-sentence. This review is for the boutique, not the salon. I've never had my hair done at the salon, although it does look really nice. This place fills an empty space for me in downtown Fairfax, which is a place to go buy gifts. If you are shopping for anybody who likes accessories, this is your place. They pulled in a variety of artists, some of which are local, and they create thoughtfully-crafted jewelry. A lot of the designs are very simplistic and sleek while others are more modern looking. They have some cute hair accessories (hello headbands! Plus, I got my eyes on you, Vacation clip) as well and also a few racks of fun clothes and shoes. Most of the boutique is upstairs, although there are also a few jewelry items for sale in the area downstairs while you check out. They also carry an extensive collection of Bumble and Bumble hair products for purchase. As far as Covid precautions go out, this is actually the business I've been to that is taking things the most seriously, which really helped me feel safe. Everyone is wearing masks, of course. When I first walked in, they took my temperature. Then they had me wash my hands. This might seem like a bit much to someone else, but I was very appreciative. The reason for this is probably that most people coming in right now are coming in for hair services which is quite a long interaction. I love this place and I am happy to see that they've been doing well during a challenging time for businesses. Before they were able to operate as a salon again, they were even using robots to deliver DIY hair dying kids to people. How cool is that? read more

I have seen Maria for a while now and ALWAYS love my hair. I am always flip-flopping on what to do with my hair, and she has been super supportive of long-hair goals, dramatic cuts, fashion colors, and "natural" colors. The most important thing about Maria is she LISTENS. She works to understand what you want and makes sure you understand how your vision will translate to your head of hair. She's also easy to talk to, but it's not awkward if you're silent either. read more

I've been holding off on writing my review till I've had my hair for two months. Furthermore, I'm confident that it doesn't appear to be the $600 I paid. I requested highlights in addition to dyeing my grey roots. Well, it turns out that the only color I got in my hair was black, with a variety of other colors on the bottom. I'm a little upset since I don't really understand what I paid $600 for. Not pleased with the stylist's demeanor or the overall experience, either. felt hurried. If you are unable to offer top-notch service, you may NOT charge that amount. Also, I've had my hair done at upscale salons for far less money, so trust me on that! What is the 600 charge for? It has been over 3 years since my first review and my opinion has not changed. I am blown away every time by the Mara team. They are incredibly kind, welcoming and knowledgeable. Danielle nailed my hair and gave me exactly what I was asking for. She took the time to ask questions and showed me what products she used to achieve the end result. I love that no one is there forcing products down your throat but really educating their hair clients about their products letting them make a decision about their purchases. I also took a look around the boutique which is absolutely gorgeous. I got these butterfly earrings (pictured) that make one butterfly when you put them together. I would follow Yeny anywhere she goes to (and I have! I first met her at D-Rock and followed her over to this salon). I never understood how important a great bond with your hairstylist was until I found her. My natural hair is coarse, really dark brown, almost black and my ideal color is an ashy blonde. I've been to other places before that weren't able to lift my hair bright enough or else they'd lift it quickly but the integrity of my hair was completely compromised. With Yeny, I've come in for partial highlights, full highlights, balayage, haircut and I have always been happy with how it turns out. She really cares about the condition of my hair and she is extremely meticulous with her work. She also doesn't pass her clients around to different stylists to finish up her job. I've been to places where my initial consult is with my hairstylist, then they call another stylist over to apply the bleach, then they hand me off to someone else for toner, then another person blow dries my hair. In the end, I'm left confused with who gets tipped since 4 people have touched my hair. But what I love about Yeny is that she is the sole person working on me and I don't feel like I'm being passed around or forgotten about. Went in to trim 3-4 inches off of my waist length curly hair, homegirl cut off like a foot. To be fair, it's because she blew it out and finished the cut with it straight. I should have told her it won't work with my shrinkage, but I trusted her expertise. 1 star off because it's not what I wanted. 4 stars because it's actually a really good haircut and the staff was super friendly. Don't go here if you have curly/textured hair, I don't think they fully understand how to work with it. Do go here if you have naturally straight hair and want a great, technically executed cut in fabulous atmosphere. read more

I had the worst experience with Yeny! Missing my appointment with my stylist back home I was desperate to find someone available before the holidays in the NOVA area. Yeny's Instagram looked like she knew what she was doing so I chose to come to see her at Mara hair salon(cutest salon ever). I let Yeny know I've been getting highlights for the past few years and I grew tired of the maintenance and was looking for something with a more natural grow out. At the time I had about 2 inches of roots on the top half of my head and 6 inches on the bottom half. We agreed that a dimensional bayalage would achieve the look I wanted. I left the salon 4 hours later with the top half basically untouched! The next day I contacted Yeny expressing that I was not satisfied with the results, she agreed to redo it. When I came in for the redo she stated that a bayalage would not be able to lighten my hair enough to match the rest of my hair. (Well why didn't you say that the first time?) We agreed that putting some foils in my hair would be a quick fix to the issue... or so I thought.. afterward asked totals of 7 hours behind the chair and $350dollars(including tip) this is what I'm left with! Thank you for your response. I am aware that fashion colors fade quickly.I am also aware that they wash out from dark virgin hair within one wash, that is why I came to your salon, to touch up my roots so the color will stay long and blend with the existing bleached purple hair, whether it was bayalage, highlights lowlights, did not matter. Yeny did a wonderful job painting my existing bleached purple hair but that is not why I came to the salon. I did not receive the service I asked or payed for. I was really hoping that when I came in for the redo Yeny would add enough highlights or babylights to bring the color up to make my roots less of an eyesore. I hate writing this review I've worked in the hospitality for over 10 years and I understand that there are misunderstandings and miscomunications but, the hair I am left with is unacceptable.
