Today is my first and last time being here. I was hoping this place would be as "authentic" as the hyped reviews on Yelp say it was. I went here with a friend and we are shocked. The feeling of the shock is like getting hit by lightning. What are the odds of that? I am no scientist but I would guess 0.000000001%? Pretty rare huh? Well this place totally left us zapped. We ordered 2 large cold HK style milked teas and it came down to exactly $9.50. The taste was decent, so we decided to try out their food..... it was a disaster. Ordered 2 Haw-Fun noodle soups, one with pork, and the other with beef. We had 2 bites, and we were done. The soup based tasted like dish soap. My #1 for Hong Kong milk tea. I have been a regular for years and have never been disappointed. Theirs is the BEST in the area. It is strong flavored and creamy. Just look at the color. To savor the experience I always buy the largest size. Moody like the weather? Try it hot or iced! I usually pair mine with a pineapple bun on the go. If you have the time to sit in, you must try to french toast! It is deep-fried in egg and sopping with butter, douse it in syrup and you will cry of tears joy. Only a 4/5 because on multiple occasions I've had to ask them to re-make my order as the wrong size/drink is given to me even though they key it into the register correctly, and the bathrooms... well, try not to have to use them. As much as I love the milk tea, I don't think it can justify handing Marathon a 5-star rating. The name of the business is a bit of a misnomer in the sense that their coffee and their donuts aren't the star of the show. If you're outside the store, you'll see signs of Marathon winning awards for milk tea. They even beat out competitors in Hong Kong which is very impressive! Their milk tea is as strongly brewed as it is silky which makes it a winning combo. I've been coming to Marathon since I was a teen (before their green branded cups and all those Pop! toys plastered their walls) and the quality of their milk tea has been consistent throughout the years. Unfortunately, I cannot quite say the same for their food. It tends to lean on the oily side and it's not the best. If I had to eat here I usually go for the satay beef with instant noodles. Their meal combos aren't that cheap either. I think it's marked up because they're leveraging the fact that you get award winning milk tea with your food. The food isn't the fastest either which boggles my mind because how long does it take to cook instant noodles and stir fry a few slices of beef? My friend loves their pineapple buns toasted with butter, but let's be real here-you can also do this at home if you pick up a pineapple bun at a Chinese bakery. I'm not saying that this is not worth visiting because if you want to try some good HK milk tea, this is one of the best in town. Don't let the name of this place fool you, as this place is not a pit stop for coffee or donuts. Swap it with pineapple buns and Hong Kong Style milk tea and you've captured the heart of Marathon. This "cha chan teng" definitely captures the vibes of its HK roots, with bonus of toys lining the walls. I ordered the bo Lo Yao or pineapple bun with a slab of butter inside, with a couple of hot milk teas considering how cold the weather is lately. The pineapple bun has a crispy flaky golden top, while without the classic crosshatch top might be one of the best i've had in the GTA. The bun is slightly warmed up, perfect for the butter to just melt slightly. Nothing is worst that eating a cold chuck of butter so I am really happy about that. The milk tea on the other hand is disappointing. Being famous for their tea, I was the most excited for that! But I found it diluted and needed a much larger punch that I was used too in HK milk teas. Would I come back? Definitely for one of those buns, and to try some of the other HK cafe classics. Marathon cafe is definitely well known for its outstanding creamy HK style tea. However, when you need a break from caffeine (I know, don't roll your eyes), they have some good options. One of my favorite non caffeinated drinks is the ginger lemon honey tea (no actual tea inside). Whenever I feel sick, this drink soothes my throat. The food is nothing to rave about. It fills you up for a relatively cheap price. There are other cafes around the area that have inexpensive tea time/lunch/breakfast options, but without the delicious HK style tea. Personally though, I prefer the drinks at the Richmond Hill location. It tastes less diluted. Overall, this is a great place to grab a hot drink and gaze at the endless collection of Pop funko collectibles. 3.5 stars! read more

The store is mostly Cafe but almost as if someone took the most interesting parts of a convenience store and gift shop and mixed it in to the place there's a desk for you to play lotto tickets and they also have a huge wall dedicated to Funko figures for purchase. It's an interesting place! There is food available to go with the milk tea as well but I've only ever come for drinks. I think I found my go to place 30+ years from now as this Donut & Coffee shop opens 6 am where it's popular for the Chinese retirement villagers nearby to sip MILK TEA or Coffee while reading Chinese Newspaper and watching HK Morning News on the corner CRT Tv. This place is now PROUDLY carrying banners and the award of the 2010 3rd Best HK-style Milk Tea within Toronto region. A competition held by the Association of Coffee & Tea. I had the Yuan Yang(Milk Tea/Coffee) and it was quite good. The Yuan Yang came with my breakfast order from the All Day Breakfast, Macaroni in Soup with Ham($3.75) so it's quite a deal. The setting is actually reminiscent of a North American Donut shop as the owner probably took it over and didn't bother changing the decor but don't come here looking for Donuts or you get your select of 4 or 5 of them in the display. This place is all about getting inexpensive HK-style Breakfast and Tea Break Specials while getting you daily Cantonese Newspaper at the same time getting your daily LOTTERY ticket from the same counter. I will complain about their service below, but before I do that I also want to share my thoughts about their food. First of all, their well known award winning milk tea is well overpriced compare to any other Hong-Kong style milk tea you can find in Toronto area. Taste: very average, nothing special, its the kind you can easily get from any HK cafe in Toronto. They seriously need to pay more attention to the poor standards of food hygiene over there. I saw a fly in the display where they put all the pineapple buns and the fly was just flying all over the buns and landed on some of them. I'm pretty sure the staff are aware of it but just no one took action. OKAY! Finally onto the horrible service part!!! Servers have NO manner nor patience. They just want to rush through everything and literally said "when can I finish my shift ah". If you want to be eye-rolled the entire time, this is the place for ya! This the original location for Marathon Cafe (other one in Richmond Hill). The owner won several awards for the best Hong Kong Style milk tea in the past which was a huge deal as that is when they got noticed in media and word of mouth. The store is quite funny in that it seems more like a mish mash variety store selling lottery tickets, store bought donuts and even action figurines! However they are best known for their Hong Kong style milk tea. The milk tea is actually quite good. Smooth, almost creamy in texture and goes down nicely. I don't know if I would call it the best tea in GTA as tea is such a individual preference, but definitely not bad at all and unique. They also sell some basic HK style meals such as noodles, HK toast, chicken wings etc... Food taste however is not the best to be honest but it is pretty cheap ($5-$10) so you get what you pay for. Take two... the last time I went here the HK Tea I got seemed like it came from the bottom of the jug ,which is actually true because I saw them pouring the last bits of the jug into my cup giving it the left out for a while after taste. This time I ordered one cold and one hot. I noticed it wasn't from the bottom of the jug this time and the taste was noticeably better than the last time. The hot one does not add sugar but it wasn't bitter to begin with and it went down better once it had cooled off a bit from scalding hot. If it was just that then I would give this place a 4-star just for the HK Tea with rushed service and 25c extra for debit card. However, I ordered some food from them. We had the wonton with rice noodle. According to my wife, the wontons didn't have the fishy odor which is a plus (unfortunately I didn't get to taste it). I on the other hand got the satay beef with macaroni. The beef has a slight kick and very pleasant taste. A little strong but buffered well with the macaroni. Even drank the soup down. Then a short while later on the drive home... BAM. MSG effects kicked in again. At least drinking that much tea kept me awake on the drive home, but it was uncomfortable having a numb tongue 4 hours into the day. I need to drink more water to flush this thing off. From this point on any place that uses MSG in their dishes AND *I can notice it* will get no more than 3-star rating from me. Love love love marathon! This small joint and everything they offer reminds me of a shop straight out of the streets of HK. I always come here when I have a craving for a lemon tea, HK iced milk tea, or pineapple buns. You definitely know they've perfected their ratios when there's a lineup in the store on the weekends! It's located in the plaza near midland and finch, behind the flaming kitchen, golden bubbles, coco, chatime, etc. (Made the mistake of turning into the wrong plaza multiple times). To be fair, I had cheung fun (rice noodle rolls) with peanut sauce and sweet sauce ($5), and not their milk tea. At $5, I expected more from them. The portion wasn't very big and the sauces were kinda just dumped into a corner. We ate in. It was rather confusing that my food was brought to the table but the utensils one has to get from a storage unit on the side, and I don't know what the procedure is for cleaning up, but I didn't see a garbage can and I couldn't find a place to put the dirty dishes. They also serve a spaghetti bolognese with three cheeses for $11. That's the most expensive spaghetti bolognese I've ever seen in a Chinese restaurant. A few places opt for a mix of Indian and Chinese teas, some just uses Indian tea, as there is a proliferation of "fake" Chinese teas in the market. Typically, evaporated milk and condense milk is used to give is the rich smooth frothy texture. Some places will introduce air into the drink by "pulling" the tea, pouring the mixture back and forth repeatedly between two vessels from a height. Others may use something that resembles a silk stocking to remove impurities from the drink. Marathon just sticks to the basics - tea, sugar, evaporated milk. I always appreciate the poems on the wall of the store. It provides insights on living a tranquil way of life. I try to sit at the cafe from time to time as a reminder to live modestly and to appreciate small things in life. I would suggest avoid visiting Marathon after 6:00 PM. The tea tends to be slightly more bitter and acidic. If you must, request for the drink to be sweetened to mask the flavour. Before heading out on our road trip to Montreal, my cousin recommended us to come to Marathon for milk tea and HK style breakfast. We ordered combo A: instant noodle with beef satay and combo D: verm. noodles with pork cutlet. Both combo was under $7! and includes HK style milk tea. We asked for no sugar for the milk tea (like to add my own), the milk tea was very silky and smooth, LOVED IT! Food came out quick and for the price the portion was generous and full of flavour. We went specifically for the tea so that's what we tried. We got a cold HK style milk tea and a cold lemon tea with a pineapple bun. I thought the milk tea was good but if you asked me what made this tea an award-winner in my books, I wouldn't be able to tell you. It was good but not too different from other HK style milk teas I've had in the past. Lemon tea was refreshing with the addition of real lemon juice. I'm not the biggest fan of HK style cafes but this one seems to strike a chord with me. I was just super impressed with my first visit here and can see myself coming here regularly. So you come in, and it there's a counter and there's some Funko pops. You're like 'okay..' The interior is plain, there's elderly people reading papers, but that's all part of the charm. Everything here screams traditional and homey, and I like that! I went with their Satay beef noodles which was really tasty! There's a good amount of beef and it wasn't chewy at all. There's napa cabbage here which I really appreciate. The portion size was good, probably less than other places but that's something you'd rather have. Also included with their $6.50 is one drink. So obviously I went with their 'famous' milk tea and it was really good. Super creamy, and smooth. The drink was probably a large. I couldn't even finish it at the restaurant. Prices are a bit higher than other places? But we're talking like a couple of dollars at most, so it's not a big deal. Even though the RH location has won a more recent HK milk tea competition (i.e. 2013) than the Scarborough one (in 2012 and prior years), I much prefer the flagship store in Scarborough. Make sure you order from the all-day breakfast and/or chef's special menus as rice/noodles outside of these do not come with milk tea, and you would find yourselves spending easily more than $10/person. Definitely agree with all the other reviews here, their milk tea is to die for but their food is lacking. Otherwise, I would have given this place 5 stars. This place is a staple and been around for many years. Their milk tea has won numerous awards and remains consistent today. Marathon does have a second location in Markham but this original location is the go-to. I had their satay beef vermicelli as part of their chefs special. You can't find a menu readily available, you have to go up and ask for it (silly if you asked me). They call out your order in Cantonese as well so it can be super confusing as you're not sure if your milk tea is actually yours or another customer. Asides from that, the place is a good place to hang out with friends or just grab a quick place to eat. Wifey had ordered some unique Funko Vinyl Pop toys online with the owner of the place. Went in person to pick them up. Tight parking lot. Driving in and out of the place requires attention. The shop is small but they do have quite the unique assortment of Funko Vinyl Pop toys. While we were there, we ordered two of these HK-style teas for take-out. For a "whitey" like myself, the tea was not too bad. Surprisingly most of the patrons there were younger "whiteys". Must be a popular joint to hang out in. This coffee shop isn't where you get coffee. If you come here for coffee (or pretty much anything else), you are totally missing the whole point of this food establishment. This is where you get Hong Kong style milk tea and maybe a greasy pork chop bun to wash it down with. For me, it's been a consistent touchstone for scalding hot creamy calorie-laden milk tea without the harsh tongue-drying aftertaste that is common for many other places. The choices for the milk tea is to either have it scalding hot or freezing cold. Anything in between doesn't give the same experience. Also, prepare for a caffeine rush to if you aren't use to drinking coffee. The restaurant itself is a stripped down no-frills place typical of Hong Kong neighborhood cafes. Quick, efficient and gets the job done. Are you looking for the flavour of a "Cha Chan Teng" in the Toronto area? Well, if you are, this place may have your answer. A "Cha Chan Teng" is a small place that serves not only tea, but small dishes at cheap prices. They are commonly found in Hong Kong. You can order a small dish, or you can have a decent morning or afternoon meal. It's a little similar to the "American diner", but significantly better in terms of tastiness. I came here on a very rainy afternoon with some interesting people and got some "Gong Sik Nai Cha", also known as the Hong Kong style milk tea that is fairly popular. You can get a small cup for less than $2 here. I took some sips, and I really enjoyed the warm richness of the tea. The creaminess was almost perfect, and the flavour was almost the ideal flavour on how I wanted my warm milk tea to be. It is an excellent choice if you are feeling a little chilly and the temperature outside is starting to be less than 20 degrees Celsius. I have not had the food here, but if I come back here again, it will definitely be for the food. The menu is similar to a "Cha Chan Teng" (they offer macaroni soup) but they also serve doughnuts. Atmosphere is very casual, this is a place to just sit for a brief while to drink some tea or get a quick bite to eat Overall, I really enjoyed the tea here, and I really hope to get a taste of the food that this place can serve. This place is a pretty good choice if you need your morning or afternoon milk tea. So just stopped by to get a small hot tea & coffee blend, along with a HK Style Egg Omelette Sandwich for breakfast. Like the other reviewers, I heard about this place through the TO Star article, re: award winning HK milk tea. So while I was leaving Pac Mall, I decided to swing by to see what the hype was all about. It's about a 5min drive, south. Anyway, despite winning an award, I was surprised that the place was rundown and outdated as it was. And contrary to their name, I didn't see any donuts, just a line almost out the door for people who I'm assuming were doing take out of their milk tea. All the tables were occupied by people who were just socialising, taking advantage of the free wifi, reading the newspaper, etc. (There were some Chinese buns, but I'm guessing that they don't make them on-site or anything as it doesn't smell like a bakery.) As soon as I walked in, aside from the line, I noticed the prominent HK milk tea smell. It's difficult to explain to anyone who hasn't had it, but it definitely heightened the anticipation! A small size cup of hot milk tea was $1.67 and it's a fair size, cold was a bit more expensive. I was glad to see that it wasn't overpriced or anything. The tea itself was good, comparable to a place in Pac Mall, but not as fragrant as the smell that was in the coffee shop itself. I would stop by if I was in the area, but I wouldn't drive out of the way or anything. Never had the food so I can't comment on that. Don't know if he put sugar in it, but it was exactly the correct ratio of cream to sugar to tea, in my opinion. I don't know what authentic milk tea tastes like, but this was pretty good. It wasn't too creamy or thick. It was sweetened, but not over powering (I drink my coffee black). And you can actually taste the tea. They also serve food. 3-4 large panels full of HK style Cafe snacks. If I lived anywhere near here, I would try them all. Got $1.50 5 curry fish balls. so excellent. It was good, but I was expecting way more from all the hype it gets. I've had tons of tea and it didn't feel like it stood out from the crowd at all. Came here for their Donuts and supposedly their best HK-Style Milk Tea. Nothing special really but was intriqued by the endless lines at the cashier...what are they ordering, any special food that they have and don't know about...IO gazed around the room and noticed a whole array of menu...people having All kinds of Noodles with different toppings...Gee .It's a restaurant!! I looked up the walls behind the cashier and the Menu was listed there broken down into Tables A, B, C D & E.... Chef's Special Table A...Choose your noodles, Instant, Vermicelli, Egg Noodle, Rice Noodle, Macaroni, Udon & Table B , choose one of the Topping, Beef, Ball, BBQ Sausage, Corn Beef, C, Ham & Egg, Bacon, Preserved Veg w/ Pork. Lettuce...Table D, choice of Pork Chop, Fried Chicken Wings, Curry Fish, Fish & Beef Balls,Table E, everything listed above but with oyster sauce!!! Interesting...All for $5.40 and the All Day Breakfast for $3.71. They also sell all kinds of scratch cards for different prices...I happen to win $12 .isn't that great....Got back the money spent on the Donut & the Milk Tea.... read more

Like many others, I came here after reading about their glorious HK milk tea winning the International Milk Tea competition. I am absolutely no expert at this kind of drink, having drank it maybe two other times in my life. Nevertheless, I love tea and often do drink it with milk. HK milk tea has a distinct taste because rather than just regular milk or cream, they use canned evaporated milk, LOTS and LOTS of it. Felt like I just drank a meal after finishing a whole cup... to be honest it was a little hard to take the last couple gulps. I do admit it was pretty tasty, I just don't think I could handle drinking this more than once a month. I had come w friends at 8:30 and it was only at 9:30 when they turned the lights off and locked up right after we left that we realized that they had been waiting for us to leave. They just let us hang out while they cleaned and didn't hurry us out so we thought that was pretty sweet of them. Note: Came back on a Saturday afternoon a week later and it was a zoo with lineups inside and coming outside the door. read more
