Just a block from the popular Jean-Talon Market, Marché Hưng Phát is a Vietnamese grocery that also serves bánh mì sandwiches for only $7 CAD--easily one of the best food deals I found in Montreal. For $2 CAD more, you can add extra meat, which I highly recommend. Inside, there's a large shared table with 6-8 seats and a counter with another 5-6 spots. It's casual but convenient for a quick bite. On my first visit, I tried the grilled pork and found the meat portion very thin, so the second time I ordered extra meat, which made a big difference. The sandwiches are served in classic style with house-made mayo, pickled carrots and daikon, jalapeños, and cucumber. I also tried the BBQ pork option, but it turned out to be more like deli-style sandwich meat, not the char siu BBQ pork I was hoping for--so I wouldn't order that again. Other options include beef, meatball, and shredded chicken. The menu is written in Vietnamese, French, and English. The staff preparing the sandwiches may not be fluent in English, but they understand enough that you can point, and the staff at the register do speak English. Pro tip: if you're dining in and want your sandwich toasted, ask while they're making it--before it's wrapped--and they'll toast it for free. Apparently this area is considered the unofficial Little Saigon next to the Jean-Talon Market, and we'd read good reviews about their bánh mì. Since I'm a big bánh mì fan, we had to give it a try even in Montreal! I ordered the siu mai bánh mì, which I believe was about $7. Service was quick, but the protein portion was really lacking. I had also asked for no cilantro, but it was added anyway, so I ended up picking it out myself. The sandwich came with the usual marinated carrots, daikon, and cucumber. Instead of soy sauce, they used hoisin sauce. Bread was crispy and be sure to ask them to toast it. Overall, it was okay for the price. Next time, I'd probably pay a couple of extra dollars for more meat. There are also some pre-made Vietnamese food and drinks. Crazy busy viet market serving yummy viet food. We tried out their Banh Mi, bread was a bit hard for us but it was very tasty. Also got the Bun Rieu (husband approved) and the Banh Canh which was thick rice vermicelli noodles instead of Banh canh but the broth and everything was delicious. Iced Vietnamese coffee was also on point. There's only one large table (fits 8) and some counter seating (probably 4-5 seats). And the rest is the market and where people line up to order. Opened in 2006, this small market on Rue St Denis, just before it meets rue Jean Talon has had excellent reviews on their food, especially their Bahn Mi sandwich. I went for lunch and ordered a Bacon Bahn Mi, which I asked to be warmed up. The sandwich was a good size, so I please asked them to cut in half. There's no place to eat inside, you have to take your food somewhere..so I went to Marche Jean Talon and had my sandwich there. I could taste all the fresh ingredients that the sandwich had, especially the cilantro and the tiny pepper pieces. The sandwich was very bready, but that is the way they are supposed to be. Best bahn mi ever! We ordered the tofu version and took them back to the Ritz for dinner. Asked for extra cilantro and light on the peppers- no problem. So glad to be in Montreal , really a foodie Mecca center. I grew up in Montreal so every time I visit any of these familiar places, it bring back fond memories of my childhood. I now live in the United States, and going back and eating some of my favorite foods bring back such good memories. There are many Banh mi shops all over the city and this is one that we tried near our Airbnb. I thought the bread baguette was a little stale and it would have been much better if put in the oven to warm it up. I always get the regular cold cut and thought the taste was fine but nothing stands out. Their regular cold cuts was priced at $7 . Their pate chaud ( meat filled small pie) was tasty especially after warming it up in an oven . The crust was flaky and the whole pie was a decent couple of bites. The shrimp spring roll was ok ; I thought the the rice paper was a little thick and the accompanied sauce was watery and not like the usual consistency. Everyone was ordering Banh Mi to go and so did we! For $4 a nice Vietnamese sandwich is a good deal. The thing I enjoyed the most was the bun with crusty exterior and soft and moist interior.Love the pickled carrot and daikon toppings. Extra Thai chili please! On the quest for the best banh mi in montreal. This place was pretty good. Bread was better and Much fresher than other places I've been to but I still find they can add more stuffing in the sandwich- why are they always so skimpy ?They definitely have better sauces and their house mayo is great. That means most pizza's should be enjoyed at the shop, take out Chinese should be the exception rather than the rule, and restaurant meals should be completed at the table whenever possible. Banh mi actually travel quite well, especially when packed properly. This place separates the vegetables from the meat, so that when you reheat the sandwich in the oven (350 F - for 10 to 15 minutes) they don't wilt. The thing is that I live hundreds of miles away, so when my delivery of sandwiches came, they needed a bit of TLC to be brought back to life. If the decision is between fresh banh mi from upstate New York, or a slightly aged sandwich from Marche Hung Phat, I'm going with the imported sandwich every time. What a delicious treat. I had the number one with ham, cha lua, and pate. But this has everything going on. Let me see if I can capture it. Crispy crust, tender crumb, meaty ham, funky pate, creamy dressing, crunchy cucumber, sweet pickles, hot pepper, warm bread, cool veggies, and all of it was in a gloriously harmonious balance. To really get a true sense of the place, I have to get up to Montreal and try several of their freshly made sandwiches. My family and I were looking for asian food for lunch after shopping around in Marche Jean-Talon. It is a vietnamese supermarket/fast food place. Lines can get long but the servers are quick. Seating is limited - probably only seats 10. This place has great bahn mi. It was the probably the best i've ever had. After strolling around Jean Talon market, I came here for lunch. More than ten people came in and out and got bahn mi sandwiches, but I got the crab seafood soup. The sandwiches looked legit from the bread to the interior design. So many happy looking people came and went with their bags of sandwiches. The soup takes a while to come out, but it's worth the wait. The crab seafood soup was spicy and they give you the adding aka sprouts, mint, lime. You can ask for Thai basil if you want. By far the best place to come for Banh mi that I've found in Montreal. $4 for a delicious flavourful sandwich of crunchy fresh baguette and contrasting yet crazy delicious flavour. If you haven't had a Vietnamese sandwich you need to get your butt down here to try one. Stop eating subway or smoked meat.... Vietnamese subs are 10X better. I've come here twice in the last few weeks and my mouth is seriously salivating for more. Both my orders were for a B2. Get one....it's loaded with meat, veggies spicy small green peppers win mayo and Vietnamese pate and bacon. It's like an explosion of flavour in your mouth that is crunchy and delicious. This is now my new all-time favourite banh mi place. I got the classic meat banh mi, the shredded pork banh mi, the nem banh mi and the meatball banh mi. It was all excellent!!! The best 16$ invested this week lol! It is so good that I would gladly take on traffic and parking problems! This place also offers other vietnamese dishes, desserts and drinks along with the infamous vietnamese iced coffee. Only 4$ for a 10" sandwich and if you buy 10 at once, you get the 11th free. The Vietnamese tofu bành mì is a vegetarian's dream sandwich and will only set you back 4$!! The bun is perfection, it requires some work but you're not going to break your teeth. The tofu is done just right and the veggies are perfection. I can barely finish one, but I always give it my best effort as it's so damn good. Their Vietnamese coffee is also delicious with the sweet condensed milk, just be very clear with them if you want the hot version as they tend to just give you the iced one automatically.
