Cute shop but the staff hovers so much so that I was THIS close to not buying the sweater I had picked out - and genuinely wanted. Like most people (from what I've found from informal surveys of my friends and family), I appreciate a "hello," upon walking in and then - leave me alone until I ask for something. Jesus. It was hello, welcome in, then - can I start a room for you? are you specifically looking for black sweaters (did the fact that I've picked up three different ones tip you off?!)? Can I find you anything? How are you doing in there (check up number two as I was trying something on)? It is beyond annoying and off putting when you want to browse and/or don't need to be hand held while perusing a tiny shop. It's not a giant department store where anyone would truly need assistance. Also, take a social cue - if someone is being short and not making eye contact (every time you try and say something), leave them alone. read more

If I could give a zero I would. The staff is extremely rude. I won't go into details. I think they are racist. I have never been treated so terribly. They would not let me exchange an item in perfect condition. They insulted me in front of my daughter and other customers. Before this, I was a frequent ML buyer. So were my sisters. I have been shopping at Margaret O'Leary since the beginning. I love her sweaters. They are unique in design made with gorgeous yarns in beautiful colors. The shops are beautiful and welcoming. I have been working with Margaret's sister , Teresa, for years beginning at the Claude Alley store. Since Covid I have been shopping mostly on line as I now live out of the area. Teresa has been helpful and responsive, suggesting styles, fit and color which are always perfect. Zero stars for incredibly snooty salesgirl who emphasizes certain words with utter disdain (see capitalized words...) There are some cute things in here, at Pac Height prices, which is to be expected. But, I once walked in and looked at a handbag and the salesgirl comes over and says to me in the snootiest possible tone, "Can I *HELP* you?" to which I replied, "no, just browsing". So she asks another question, "Are you looking for the *PRICE TAG*?" and she continues to stare at me. What? Ugh, so condescending, I tell everyone to stay away from this store. I was just in your store, and while shopping, I heard the owner berating one of her employees. I am simply appalled by what I witnessed! Certainly everyone has a bad day, but I hope this is not something that happens often, as it would be hard to keep employees willing to be belittled. I stopped into Margeret O'Leary during my trip to San Francisco last week... I was just window shopping, when I was drawn into this cute boutique. As soon as I entered I was greeted by two smiling faces (who later introduced themselves as Monica and Sarah). They let me do my browsing, but let me know that if I needed anything, to just ask. I was scared to touch anything, because all the apparel was folded sooo incredibly neatly, but Monica assured me it was OK to move things around. I found so many cute things, I could have done some serious damage to my bank account, but I somehow managed to hold myself back! The next time I'm in SF, I'll definitely save some room in my shopping budget to return to this adorable boutique. read more

This boutique is cute. I didn't face any snooty people. I walked in with a friend and we were browsing. I did talk to a sales girl who mentioned the purple partial cashmere fingerless gloves that I was super coveting were really cute. She almost sold me on saying they were cute just then, but I wouldn't say that was aggressive service like some of the other people mentioned. I guess it just validated my want for them. And they weren't too pricey at 50 bucks. But then I turned to the bench o shoes that they have near the fitting room... and I saw... the shoes. The shoes that no girl needs, because she already has 50 pairs of shoes. Not only that. I turn the shoes over to find... they actually have treads! So not only are they cute, they won't have me landing flat on my ass after slipping on some street trying to look cute. So now I'm faced with functional and fabulous. With those two conditions met, the purchase is now reasonable even if the price is hefty. But for One of 2 shoes, it's not a bad idea. So I ask the lady for my size and she finds it and I prance around the fitting room like a princess and stare at my friend, who gives me downward shaking head that speaks to, "I have seen your shoe shelves, yes that's right plural, shelves, you so don't need these." But instead she mutters, "Get them if you really want them. They are cuter than the other shoes that you wanted down the street." Yay with that half-hearted affirmation I skip over to the register and buy them. Lovely experience. Now if only I had gotten the gloves too, but seriously I didn't need them. Well, I never will shop at this store again, ran in because I was going to a shop nextdoor, tried on a sale sweater, which I bought. Got home and decided I did not like it. Found out it is not returnable,because it was on sale. I am standing in the store, look all around for a sign saying that, and there is none. I ask the sales person, how I was supposed to know that, and she says its on my receipt. Ok, so if its on my receipt, than I already bought it. You have to tell a customer before they buy, its not returnable!. read more

This boutique has some beautiful clothing by some great designers - Rozae Nichols, John Varvatos and Velvet, to name a few. And while the prices aren't low, they are what one should expect for these brands. I suggest hitting the sales, where it's not unheard of to save 50%. That said...I agree with several of the other reviewers who note that the sales staff leaves something to be desired. I'm happy to say that I've never felt unattended to, or that the women were too snobby to take care of me. On the contrary, I've felt overwhelmed by aggressive service. I was completely taken aback by the owner's sister when I was in last. When I shop, I like to do my own thing - I want to know there's help if I need it, but know what I like and what I don't, and generally don't like feeling pressured into trying things. At the same time, I appreciate a salesperson working for her commission, so I feel compelled to give her a fair shot. That fair shot took a nosedive when, after bringing me nothing but full-priced items to try alongside my selcted sale items, the eager sales associate added in a $1200 necklace. I'm in the store in my yoga gear, complete with mat, and have said, "I'm just browsing." Where from that did she get that I was in the market for such a thing? That move erased all of the warm fuzzies I got from her repeatedly complimenting my figure and guessing only the smallest sizes for me. Oh...you just want my money. I'll certainly shop here again for the unique finds...but that's because I shop a lot and like to mix up my store visits. There are better boutique experiences nearby - try Bettina on Sacramento Street or Heidi Says just a couple doors down for similarly great fashions with a more easygoing atmosphere. read more

Whenever I shop at Margaret O'Leary's I feel like a true girly girl. It's a nice feeling, especially when inspired by sweet as pie clothes and not catty gossip and shrieking hellos. The clothes are ridiculously cute and typically well-made ( I had one sweater unravel after one wearing, which they graciously replaced). The salespeople are nice and attentive--though not overly so...Just right. In fact, one of the girls designs some of the jewelry they sell--beautiful stuff--and she's so modest you'd never guess she was the designer. For what you're getting, their prices are perfect...This is a boutique for God's sake! Cough it up girls (and boyfriends): great service and unique items are worth the price. read more

I happened into the Pac Heights store Saturday afternoon 9/22 and was thrilled to see all the jewel toned sweaters, waffle Henley's, and AG jeans. It's a treat to shop in a "real store" when I travel, and this trip did not disappoint. Teresa was friendly and fun and when sizes weren't in stock she found them online and shipped them for me no charge - they arrived the day after I returned home, which was great. I should note that Margaret happened to be in the store and it was fun to have her help choosing and deciding. M suggested the AG Isabelle cords (high rise, crop), which I never would tried on due to the button front (80's flashback), but they fit great and we're very flattering...even my 15 yr old daughter is impressed w/Mom! What an incredible place. I somehow had associated "Margaret O'Leary" with old-lady clothing... big, boxy sweaters, chunky, old-lady sweaters. Not that there's anything wrong with them! But boy was I wrong. I wandered into this store on a whim Sunday afternoon -- on the prowl for some fitted sweaters. I'd crawled all of Fillmore -- Ella Moss, sando, Elizabeth Charles, Helen Says, Alice and Olivia, etc. All without finding a single fitted sweater that I liked (though loads of loose-fitting, ill-shapen numbers). Well... boy did I hit the jackpot here. I wandered in and within minutes spotted some gorgeous options -- eons better than anything I'd seen all day. The gals behind the desk were great -- Robin, Emma (departing), and Danielle were so helpful -- grabbing me sweaters I hadn't seen and helping especially with jeans. It was a truly magical and incredible shopping experience, and I'm super grateful for their sharp eyes, supportive feedback, and incredible know-how. I'll be back, MOL! Great stuff! read more

She helped me with sizing of a beautiful duster that I saw on the website, and I ordered directly from her at the Mill Valley store. Elly was even able to get my order out the door to FedX that same afternoon. That's amazing service from a "real" store, and I didn't have to leave my home. My favorite wardrobe piece is the herringbone poncho! It goes with absolutely everything and once i put it on I don't want to take it off. When I first got it, it took me a month to finally take it to the wash, since I didn't want to be without it. :D I wear it around the house, out on errands and out with friends. Everytime I come into this boutique, it is basically empty except for the stupid salesgirls who are full of attitude. I recently went in after getting my haircut on Fillmore Street. I found a cute scarf, but decided to think about it before buying. I went back a few days later and asked about it, but it had been sold. What do you think the ever-so-sweet-on-commission salesgirl said? "That's what you happens when you wait." What a b(*&$. I then asked her to do what any other normal salesperson should have offered to do - look for it in another store. She "pretended" to look and then said they didn't have anymore. I probably might have bought a similar scarf is she didn't have such an attitude. Oh and FYI, I found the scarf somewhere else and I am SO GLAD I spent my $$$ elsewhere. read more

Passed by many times thinking, "Gosh, everything looks so soft and comfortable in there...". I knew the prices average $150-$300 and up for tops and sweaters from what I viewed on their website (out of my budget), so I never went into the store. Fast forward to today...had some extra tax refund cash to spare and decided I could finally come in to try stuff on and not feel like I'd be completely wasting the sales associates' time. It's a boutique so shopping experience is very personal. I have to say that the ladies here are good about not hovering excessively. I was checked on periodically while in the fitting room, but was never forced to come out and parade what I tried and I didn't feel any aggressive upselling. I was given suggestions, but it was always my call and my decision. Thank you to my personal shopper Nikki - she made it easy and pleasant and pretty comfortable - especially since it was my first time coming in. She greeted me immediately and helped me from start to finish. I ended up purchasing not one, but two very versatile and super soft cardigans that can easily transition from work to play. They were pricey as expected, but I plan on taking good care of them and using them often. At checkout I was added into their client base and told that they do repairs on their merchandise in the city in case I ever snag the material...hopefully I'll never have to use the service, but it's nice to know its available. I wish I could shop here more often - everything is classic and so soft to the touch. I'll be back whenever I'm able to splurge! read more

I love the quality, styles, and exquisite materials of Margaret O'Leary's lines and designs. Unfortunately, I only buy here when there's a big sale because the clothes, mostly designer, European, or hers, are simply too expensive for my budget. The workers here, unlike what others have written, are very helpful and not at all condescending. They also don't hover. I like the fact that the Pac Heights store is close to many other women's clothing stores, so I can consolidate my shopping, compare and return if I can't find anything lower priced. I mostly shop here for Christmas gifts, special occasions, sweaters (MO'L's are VERY FINE) or jeans. I like the fact that MO'L always has some lovely dresses cut in a classic style. Usually I can't afford them, but still, I like to see creativity and quality are still obtainable. read more

As I was walking around Fillmore, I went into this store and found all these designers that i absolutely LOVE. How excited could I be!!? What bothered me: the SALES associates. All I wanted to do in this quiet atmosphered store is to quietly shop and find something sweet - then this sales associate comes disturbing into my mood and starts bringing all these things Idont care to look at. My reaction was "Do you seriously think I look good in this fat sweater?" "Will you stop bringing me things Im not looking for?" "Will you stop telling me that everything looks good ON?" No. Not once. but non-stop!............ I felt like I was in pressure - I could hardly breathe in there. I only got the feeling that she only want my wallet; my money! I have purchased many items from this store; sadly to say the quality of their cashmere sweaters is awful!! Lots and lots of pills that don't come out from cleaning and holes everywhere in the thin cashmere ones. And I have had 3 sweaters fall apart!! They have fixed one of them but the other 2 are ready for the garbage and at $300+?? I will never buy another sweater from this store. They are made in China and extremely inferior with huge price tags. Plus the attitude of the sales clerks, especially Monica is horrendous! Always making a snide comment and I live in the neighborhood. They are getting a bad reputation in PacHeights; none of my neighbors will shop there. Very sad for a store in the neighborhood.
