My first time dining in Mari Luna. It's a cute restaurant that used to be a Carvel. They had recently expanded so there are more tables. They brought us chips with salsa and guacamole which was great. I ordered tilapia and shrimp tacos. I wasn't expecting the tilapia to be fried but they are generous with the protein inside my tacos that I was full with the two tacos. Our waitress was nice and attentive but I didn't catch her name. I was in the mood for guacamole and something Mexican so I stopped by. I ordered nachos with shrimp and guacamole. I called my order in and when I arrived I waited almost 15 minutes just to check out and pay. I didn't have a problem with this because I could see that it was a homely intimate atmosphere and they were short on help. One lady was working the register, taking orders and working the to go orders. I watched her do it all so I was patient. I normally don't eat out on a daily basis but I wanted Mexican and didn't want to cook. I finally got my food and tipped her 2 bucks and I was on my way. I give this 7 out of 10 because I was hungry and it could have had more lettuce and tomatoes and beans as well as a few more shrimp. I remember this place as the old Carvel. My mom and friends of mine have been here a lot of times but for some reason this was my first time. It definitely won't be my last because the food was outstanding and everyone's dishes from appetizers through entrees through dessert look delicious. Everything that I tasted was amazing. This restaurant doesn't disappoint when it comes to food and our service was also excellent. Being that I used to know this place as Carvel ice cream, the front of the building sort of looked similar but then it looked like they had built on out to the side because it was different than I remembered in the past. We came here to celebrate three birthdays and we started with some chips with guacamole, queso, and salsa. We also had some yucca and fried plantains which were delicious. Because it was such a cold day outside I ordered the seafood soup which I had forgotten was a cream based but it was okay it wasn't too creamy and it was chocked full of seafood. It had so much seafood that I had to take about a third of it home for lunch the next day. Everyone else had fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and one person had the stuffed salmon. For dessert we shared several desserts, the chocolate lava cake which looked amazing, the fried ice cream, the churros and another dessert that I can't remember the name of but it was delicious. The restraunt has a parking spot and was not overly crowded when we went around 2 on a Saturday. I got the standard margarita and it was perfect. I also ordered two birria tacos for $5 each and Mexican rice. They stuffed the tacos with meat, so it was very very filling. The flavor was also really delicious and the meet tender. The consome that came with it was not as flavorful as I expected considering how flavorful the birria was. The tacos came with guacamole and sour cream and it was some of the gucamole I ever had. We also got shrimp tacos and Peruvian chicken to go. The shrimp tacos were really good. The Peruvian chicken was lacking in flavor and the texture was a bit dry for me. The customer service was good. This is the perfect Mexican restaurant and I am so lucky to live close by. The first time my partner and I went here, it was shortly after we moved to Pikesville and wanted to have a date night after two weeks of unpacking/takeout and whatnot. They did not disappoint! It's quaint, but it's always busy. They have real, authentic Mexican food that can't be beat. Since our first dining experience, we've done takeout 3-4 times from them. The papa taco--- a potato taco-- is to die for. I feel like I crave one every other week! The pupusas are perfectly made everytime. This is THE spot to take your friends if you want to show them an amazing restaurant. Found this cute little Mexican place near me. I have to say, I went in expecting the worst. Having come from Texas recently (where you can only find Tex Mex ), I didn't have high hopes for Maryland Mexican food. I have to admit, I was very pleasantly surprised! I started with ceviche mixto and a Modelo Especial. The ceviche was really good. Fresh fish and seafood, perfectly tender, with a lot of lime flavor. It wasn't that red sauce stuff they made in Texas, not sweet, just wonderfully citrusy! A perfect start. The chip and salsa were also really good. Light, crispy and not greasy chips with an excellent red salsa. I then moved on the three enchiladas (one crab, one ground beef, and one cheese) all served entomatada with a green tomatillo sauce. They were all super tasty. They came with pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole on the side. The guacamole was actually pretty darn good all on its own. I added rice and refried beans as well. The rice was the best I have had, but not bad either. The refried beans were really good. The last thing I dove into was the barbacoa taco. It was also quite tasty. Not the most amazing barbacoa I have ever had but tasty with no complaints, other than that I was super full at this point. The restaurant itself was really cute inside, and very clean. Oh my god this food is so good. High-end food in a quaint little place. I've never had such good Mexican food. The refried beans are homemade. The salmon fillet was cooked perfectly to the point where it was just barely done, and it was a thick cut so I was very impressed! Whatever the sauce, for the salmon was is to die for, and I am dipping literally everything in it. The veggies are cooked through. Perhaps it is because they do not have enough staffing, because there was always such a long wait for takeout on Saturday nights when we ordered from there. This is a small Mexican restaurant in Pikesville, the decor was festive and bright. The waiter was warm and welcoming. We had nachos which came out in about 7-10 mins. The nachos was really crispy, the cheese pull was amazing, there was beans, pico, guacamole and sour cream witch in the nachos. The meat wasn't seasoned to my liking. The queso was okay.. However, it's important that my fellow yelpers understand what they are dealing with when they order from this establishment -- good food but poor service. I called them around 8 to order Chimichanga. I was placed on hold for 3 minutes before I hung up. I called right back and when I said hello the girl hung up. Called back -- she said hello --I said "I was just hung up on" Called back again - No answer. Called back again --voicemail. Called again -- she said hello --I said hello and she hung up. Called back again I asked if she could hear me. She said yes I can hear you. I told her that I was just hung up on 3 times. She said they hang up if they don't hear anything. I think she lied because the second call I was able to say "I was just hung up on" before she hung up so I know that I could be heard every time I called. I don't think they wanted anymore business because when I got to the restaurant the door was locked--- 30 minutes before closing. I could see ppl eating inside but they had a sign on the door. I called and told them I was at the door. The chic had just called me to tell me my food was ready as I was driving there (all of 5 minutes before I got there) She could've told me that the door would be locked . I ordered a Chicken and Shrimp Chimichanga. It had good flavor and was huge. It had large pieces of chicken in it but the shrimp were cut in small pieces(please see photos). It was mostly rice and a few pinto beans. This was only my second experience with Mari Luna. I don't believe I will return. The woman answering the phones is rude (as stated by others in their reviews). I think she is the same woman that was rude to me on my first visit when I stumbled upon the restaurant. To Management- Not all patrons that look like me will put up with mediocre service. Do better. Fire that woman and if she's family or an owner put her butt in the back. read more

I had dinner there last night. Although the food was good, my friend found a piece of plastic from a container in his food. When he mentioned it to the server, he said they keep the lamb in plastic. He apologized, but that's it's. He didn't offer to remake the food, take it off the check, or anything. I didn't like how the situation was handled. It had been a few years since I dined at Mari Luna, some things have changed and some things haven't. The food flavor, quality and quantity are still excellent but they are longer BYOB. It is a small restaurant and can be noisy and the wait for a table can be long. Service can also suffer when they are busy, as they were on the night we were there. We waited over 45 minutes for our entrees after ordering but we enjoyed the chips and fresh house made salsa while we waited. My lamb shank in cooked in banana leaves was unique and richly flavored. My wife's puck three included a Chile Relleno, Shrimp enchilada and a fish taco. Overall dinner was tasty and filling at a fair price. read more
