This is a fun place to go. The owner (perhaps) hugs almost everyone who comes through the door. You feel very welcome here! It is noisy and usually crowded. They need more tables and chairs and a bigger place! You first are served a small bowl of soup. It tastes like chicken broth and rice. The best thing to eat is the bowl! I have been wanting to try this place for months, but never had the chance to until last week for Mis cumpleanos. A good friend actually recommended a specific plate called Molcajete to try as it was his favorite plate to get in authentic Mexican restaurants. I can say, I've never had a Molcajete in my life and it did NOT disappoint! Molcajete consists of grilled steak, Mexican sausage, shrimp, chicken, melted cheese, jalapeños, onions, avocado, cactus - served on a warm rock plate, and comes with rice and beans. It was mouth watering and I was just in HEAVEN putting the food in my mouth! I will order this over and over again, and you can't get more authentic than this dish! This place used to be fantastic, but I was really disappointed with my experience today. I ordered the beef quesadilla de masa. I wasn't told there would be an upcharge for beef, and there is only one price listed on the menu. Also, nowhere on the menu does it say there would be tomatoes. I hate tomatoes, and it was contaminated by a plethora of tomatoes. The rice was mushy and bland, and while the exterior of the quesadilla was good, it was sitting in a puddle of oil, and the meat, though tender, had no flavor. Where were the chiles, cumin, onions, oregano, cloves, garlic, and salt? Mexican food is supposed to be full of rich flavor. The salsa was a disappointment, too. It was straight tomato juice with random pieces of cilantro and onion, with no peppers or heat of any kind. Drinks are ridiculous. I ordered a Coke, knowing full well that it would cost me as much as a 6-pack, but the server refilled it when it was only half gone, and then charged me for two! I didn't even drink half of the refill. I probably drank 10 oz of Coke, and paid over $10 for it. The service wasn't exceptional either. I had three different servers coming at different times, none of whom told me their name, and all of whom ignored me when I was done. I waited 20 minutes for someone to bring me my bill, and my plates were never cleared from the small table. I've been telling people that this was the best Mexican food around, but now I'm not sure that I'll return. I'm super bummed. read more

I was looking for a place to meet a friend for lunch and Maria Bonita seemed like a hit! I am not going to lie, I literally passed this place THREE times before finally pulling in to the right place, thanks Apple Maps. Also, it's hard to pay attention to the road and find a new place you have never been to at the same time haha. There was plenty of parking upon my arrival. I was able to pull right into a spot and go inside. Once I went into the restaurant, I was seated immediately. One thing that definitely stood out was the prices of items. Even at high end steakhouses, I can't say I have seen a soft drink be ~$5 and have them limit the refills you get. In my experience, soft drinks for dine in are $2-3 and you can get as many refills as you would like. They did bring some chips and salsa for free (like all places do) but on the menu, the chips and salsa is almost $15 so I was glad I didn't receive a charge for chips and salsa that I technically didn't order haha...but I did think their chips and salsa was pretty good! The food menu prices also stood out. This place seemed a bit more high end but honestly, if the price matches the quality and taste, go for it! Me and my friend with me got the same thing; the ground beef enchilada and ground beef taco. At first, we thought it wasn't going to come with rice and beans because the menu didn't say it really would. To our surprise, the plate was huge and had rice and beans with it! Truthfully, I thought the food was quite bland. My friend and I both agreed that the taco was harder than most shells and the meat was just not seasoned very well. One of the best Mexican places in Utah county. Top notch Mexican food, lots of options, and even after coming several times, I still haven't had a dish that wasn't great. I'm a big mole fan and this place has one of the best around. Their Mole Pablano is fabulous. (Better than Red Iguana's who is quite good as well). The mocajete is another knockout. And big enough to share. They also have a lot of standard Mexican food fair like enchiladas and tacos. Chips and salsa is quite good. The chips are okay but the salsa is the real star. It has nice rich flavor (not just tomato sauce flavor) and isn't very spicy which is probably a plus for the typical local crowds. Get there early as they are popular and do get busy. Horrible service. Normally Maria Bonita is a family favorite (we were there to celebrate my son's 9th birthday) but the terrible service tonight really detracted from the entire experience. We were a party of 7 plus a highchair so 8 total. We were seated at a table that could comfortably seat 4. Couldn't use a highchair because there wasn't room. We were told that if we wanted a bigger table we'd have to wait an additional 25 minutes when we had already waited our originally quoted time of 30 minutes. The birthday boy didn't want to leave so we squeezed in and tried to make it work. We held the baby the whole time. When they brought dinner there wasn't enough room for everyone's food. Much like Jesus was able to feed 5000 people with five loaves of bread and two fishes, I imagine he could've done the same with the flautas plate at Maria Bonita's. I've had flautas before. A nice, smallish fried tortilla with some meat and cheese. Pretty standard Mexican flare. It felt like a flautas kind of night. After all, it was my cheat meal for the week. I speak very mediocre Spanish but that doesn't stop me from using it while ordering Mexican food. I asked for "flautas de pollo" which for all you non-speakers out there means chicken flautas. As I said my Spanish is mas o menos (so so) and the waiter thought I said pork not pollo. Easy mistake. It would not be my last. I've only been shocked three times at the arrival of a meal. Once in China when a full boiled duck head was placed before me, once in Chile when I was expected to eat dense grey mush (the kind that completely plugs up your entire body for five days), and finally tonight at Maria Bonita's. My plate arrived containing three fully grown pork flautas. Each ran the length of my elbow to the palm of my hand. I am not a small man and I do not have a small wingspan. I was dunking in 9th grade (true story). I estimate there was 45 inches of flautas on my plate. It is unclear to me why there is no warning on the menu. No normal, well adjusted human being with a fully functioning digestive system could eat three of these. It isn't possible. The small intestine isn't long enough. I immediately asked how such a thing could even exist. I took my first bite, then another, and still one more. There was no progress. Still enough food on my plate to feed the rest of my table and the three tables next to me. The taste was good, but mentally I couldn't process what was happening. I can't say for certain how the taste compares to other flautas. Imagine gazing into the depths of a black hole and trying to remember what light was like. I estimate I was able to complete 60% of one flautas before giving up. I ate no rice. The fact these massive fried snakelike tortillas come with rice, beans and guacamole is some kind of sick joke. Their mere presence made me question my manhood. The waiter acted calm and cool. She saw me struggling and simply asked if I wanted a box to go. I then realized the flautas would not fit in my microwave without significant modification. Plus it would take 2-3 weeks to eat them and I wasn't sure they would stay good that long. My dinner companions all enjoyed their meals and the futility of my own efforts. So I imagine it's worth visiting this restaurant. As I walked out I saw the kitchen attempting to squeeze another plate of flautas through the counter window. They did not fit. read more

My wife decided to celebrate her birthday at Maria Bonita. This was the first visit in quite a while, and there has been a marked change and NOT for the positive. In the past, when seated, you were greeted with a bowl of delicious soup. Rather than a delicious bowl of soup, our server seemed more annoyed by our presence. She was in such a rush to take our drink order that she didn't hear when my wife asked for the poblano cheese dip. The drinks came quickly, and the server took our order and disappeared just as fast. Within just a few minutes, both the appetizer and meals came out almost at the same time. The dip had a burnt taste and not the delicious charred chilie kind. It was like it hadn't been stirred at all prior to it being served. We were a group of five, and 2 tables of unequal height and differing stability were shoved together to accommodate us, so there wasn't a lot of real estate for the chips and salsa, dip, drinks, and entrees. The food was largely flavorless. With how much food was ordered and how quickly it came out, it seems very suggestive that most of the food was prepared and not fresh, almost like it was put together in an assembly line. How the meals tasted, it reflected that idea of a poorly constructed assembly line. My wife ordered the barbacoa. The portion was very small compared to the $20 price tag. She ordered black beans, and she said they tasted like they came from a can. I ordered the Don Antonio combo with 2 burrito types, a flauta, and 2 tacos types. I only ate the carne asada burrito and a portion of the flauta and part of each taco. The only flavor I could taste was the chipotle crema style sauce on the fish taco. My son had the mole enchiladas and wasn't impressed. My daughter had the kids enchilada and only ate part of the enchilada and commented on how awful the beans and rice tasted. My stepdaughter ordered the giant quesadilla, had a few bites, and said there was something wrong with the chicken. We live in Salt Lake and made the treacherous trek to Orem on a Friday afternoon for a bad meal, bad service, and a bad experience overall. For over $140, we expected better. My wife used to love coming to Maria Bonita, but we won't be back again. read more

Best Mexican restaurant in Orem! I have been searching for some great Mexican in Utah county and I finally found a place. I went for lunch on a Thursday, and let me tell you, this place was packed, but the wait staff was still relatively attentive. This place has lots of interesting art work and is a great casual place to dine for a lunch break or after work. We had a group of 6. We ordered two entreés -chicken enchiladas and chicken fajitas. We also ordered their melted cheese that comes with chorizo, cilantro, tomato, and onion. Their portions are huge!! Definitely a place you can come to that is budget friendly since you can definitely share an entreé with one or two people. That being said, the food is still incredible. The chicken was tender in both of our entreés and the veggies in the fajitas were SO FRESH and yummy. The melted cheese was not something I had tried before but ended up being so tasty. We sat down at 8:40 and left feeling completely full and satisfied at 9:05. Friendliest crew I've ever encountered. It's always spotless in there. The wait times are always shorter than they say. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants out there. Their food portions are huge and the food is always amazing. The Smothered burrito and enchiladas are my favorites, along with their house made horchata. My only beef with this place is that they sometimes are passive aggressive about getting you to leave the restaurant once they see you finished your meal.
