This past year I've had a thing for purchasing copper jewelry- most bracelets from South Korea, Mexico City, Tijuana and Mt. Charleston. Wondered if anyone ever made copper necklaces. I saw a few vendors that had thick linked chains. I bought the medium $45 length- tax is high in New Orleans. Far cry from dainty but copper is supposed to be good for arthritis and health. Ok let's see.

Congested with wandering tourists, most of the vendors sell items that could be found at any flea market in the country. A lot of the souvenirs and clothing fell way short in reflecting authentic New Orleans craftsmanship. I was hoping for a market more along the lines of Barcelona's La Boqueria with bounties of fresh produce and appetizing edibles, but there was just a row of fast food kiosks beyond the beignets at Cafe du Monde. Without a doubt, the highlight of the market was the strolling groups of musicians randomly playing jazz to enraptured tourists. RELATED - Exploring New Orleans? There really is a great selection of stores to choose from in the shopping mall. Situated right on the Mississippi river, at the end of Canal Street, this shopping mall is really easy to find. Once inside, the main thing you're gonna enjoy is being removed from the climate. Whether it's scorching hot outside, a day of full on humidity, or lost in rainy weather, you're gonna be out of the elements if you come shopping at this mall. That, in of itself, is a great feature of this New Orleans shopping establishment. You can pretty much find anything you need here. I like to shop stores like Johnston and Murphy, Tommy Bahamas, and explore Nordstrom Rack for deals. Parking is plenty and discounted, so don't forget to validate your parking ticket. There is a Cafe du Monde but there is usually a line so be patient. There is a somewhat hidden entrance in the Outlets that gets you to the neighboring Hilton without stepping outdoors which is convenient if you are staying there. The reason for 3 stars is that stores will randomly close leaving the mall seem empty. Some of the stores will solicit you to come get free samples of whatever they selling which could be annoying.

We thought maybe google was wrong but it was trying to get us to the open location. Midday and the first location we found was closed. My wife had heard of this place and as she doesn't really request many things to do or go too we made it a point to check it out. It is small but full of stuff, dresses, jewelry, purses, Halloween costumes! They had some great earrings and she got quite a few as well as a purse that looks like a tape deck radio/Boombox. She tried on a few dresses but couldn't quite find one she liked, but was excited they had dresses in all shapes, styles, and sizes! This close to Halloween and with the Halloween parade either that day or the next the Halloween costumes left were few but still some good ones. They had two dressing rooms, but there was storage in one of them so if the store needed something while you were in that dressing room you had to get dressed fast and let them through as soon as you could. It was fun and full of character, some earrings she found look like goldfish in a bag of water, Some cool skeleton hands to go with her Pharmacy Museum shirt, as well as some skulls and a few others. There was a sale of buy one get half off second. She finally told me I had to make her leave or she would spend all the money. To quote her: Shana: "My thoughts? I LOVED IT!"

What an incredible find. Whether you're a practitioner, a collector, naturally curious, or simply someone who enjoys the unusual and macabre, this shop has something for everyone. The diversity of items available is impressive. From cards and books to ethically sourced bones, handcrafted artwork, curiosities, and so much more, it's impossible to list everything they offer. Every corner of the shop holds something fascinating. While photos and videos aren't permitted inside, I can say that the space itself is thoughtfully curated and filled with amazing handcrafted pieces created by talented artists and makers. I was fortunate enough to speak with one of the owners, who graciously allowed me to take a single overall photo. I didn't want to spotlight just one artist and risk overlooking the incredible work of others who have poured their hearts and souls into their creations. When we visited, Shelby and Port were working, and they truly made the experience memorable. I was having a rough day after getting overheated, but Shelby patiently answered every question I had with both knowledge and kindness. They even took the time to explain concepts in ways that newcomers and non-practitioners could easily understand. Port was equally wonderful. We spent time swapping stories about oddities we'd encountered and discussing items on our wish lists. They were incredibly knowledgeable, even educating us on regulations regarding which oddities can and cannot legally be shipped in and out of Louisiana. What impressed me most was how welcoming the atmosphere was. I walked in as a customer and left feeling like I had made new friends. I'm currently waiting on my purchases to arrive and honestly feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. If you're skeptical, curious, morbidly inclined, a collector, a practitioner, or simply looking for an unforgettable experience in the Quarter, do yourself a favor and stop by Dark Matter Oddities. Come for the curiosities, stay for the conversations, and be prepared to leave with a story or two of your own.

None of my friends are boring and they all love this shop because it has something for just about anyone that loves art and unique items that you will not find in your typical souvenir shop. All of it comes from actual makers, not a factory (like your typical tourist trap on Decatur). I also shop here for gifts. For myself... and those I love. For Christmas, my husband bought me two tiny paintings, one of my favorite bird, a raven and one of a skull holding up a glass of wine. I cherish them! I have a thing for tiny framed items and these came in elaborate mini frames that look so gorgeous on my mantle. There is a lot packed into this beautifully arranged shop. They have jewelry, taxidermy, bones, sculpture, paintings and so much more. Definitely for all your goth and witchy amici!
