Not sure why so much hate; this Mariano's is far and away better than any Jewel I've been to, and the prices are comparable if not better. Pharmacy rocks in vibe and staff; just switched my scripts to come here; further from my house, but every Walgreens is a chaotic mess and s/thing like a 60 min wait standing in line. One star off b/c? 1. Alas, toiletries selection is limited; having to go elsewhere to source shampoo is a bummer. 2. Their membership card system doesn't work very well. 3. Now there's a pretty annoying Eectronic Coupon thing going on to get about half the items marked "sale." Honesty, who wants to stand in the dairy aisle and start searching a coupon online TBH the more I write about it, the more annoyed it makes. But the staff on-site is good and I always like them. Mariano's is weird. Like every location in the city used to be fun to visit now they all have a dystopian vibe like they're more interested in loss prevention than selling food. That being said, this one is not bad. I'm surprised at people complaining about the customer service when I've only had good customer service here. Unfortunately what makes it really hard is the prices which are not their fault but still often pretty unreasonable. But Jewel is just as bad and doesn't have anywhere near the selection. The lady that works on Wednesday morning at the self check out needs to be retrained or replaced. Her customer service skills and demeanor is unacceptable. She is very bothered when you need assistance. Her facial expression is atrocious. She is so negative. One look at her facial expression can ruin your day. I've tried Instacart for the first time for delivery at this location and I found that using this service is hit or miss with the local shopper that picks up the food you selected online. First off, the prices online does not reflect the sale prices so you pay full retail price for all items. Secondly, the shopper picks the items and don't care for the items, meaning I picked butter and when I received it. The butter was damaged ( a large dig into the butter and the wrapper was ripped). Looks like they threw it in the cart. I also ordered a gallon of milk and either that shopper does not know the selections in the store or they don't want to look for it. The website shows Springfield Grade A milk and I sent the shopper that 2% is fine and he just rejected the sale of that item. This system is nice to deliver but I would like better care of the items purchased. Would I use Instacart again? Probably not. I would just go in and do the shopping myself. Buying damaged goods at full price is not worth the effort. read more

This is my least favorite Mariano's in the city. Their hot bar is often not stocked or has super old food. They always seem to be short staffed and the lines are super long to check out. A quick trip ends up taking you twice as long because of how long you need to stand in line. read more

This is my personal favorite Mariano's and let me tell you why. Every Mariano's is different. For some reason, this Mariano's is perfectly organized. I had no trouble finding my way through the aisles, grabbing every item I needed. It is so clean. And one of the things I like most about this specific Mariano's? Its employees. Every one of them was helpful, friendly, and looked like they enjoyed their job. One thing I would add is Apple Pay or chip on those card readers. Looking forward to being back. read more

I give up. They just don't care about food safety. I shouldn't have to scrutinize every item to make sure it won't make my family sick. Every department should be doing daily temperature and date checks. I don't understand how this is such an ongoing issue. They never cared when I personally brought these items and issues to their attention. Not even a thank you. Things improved momentarily when I first posted the moldy cheese case review. But I'm constantly finding very expired products again which only goes to show they are only concerned with keeping upper management off their backs, not with actually caring about their customers. I try my darndest to go to Jewel, Aldi or Cermack. Which is ironic, because the whole Marianos schtick is that it's a more premium and upscale experience. It's a shame we ever lost Dominick's and an even bigger shame we got this s**thole store. The staff is rude and untrained. Don't ever let them bag your stuff if you should find yourself here!! I hope the health department shuts it down or that they go OUT OF BUSINESS!! I don't know who "manages" this place but he/she should quit. I spend $500-600 monthly here and that stops today!! Sadly, I just had the worst customer service experience at the bakery in this store at the hands of Destiny! I asked if perhaps they had a specific dessert that wasn't in the case that they normally carry. Maybe there was one in the freezer. She couldn't have been more bothered by my request. She said "No, I don't work in cakes". But you're in the bakery???? So I asked can you find out. " No! There's no one here!,?? But you're here??? So I asked why the attitude?? Aren't you a customer service representative?? Her response was " Sweetie I don't have an attitude! My response was "I'm not your "Sweetie" I decided it was time to get the store manager involved. And I did. Typically my experience at this store and its employees is positive. They've always been helpful and courteous. This was one bad, rotten apple that got through. So I went here to get some ice cream, didnt see the flavor I was looking for so I noticed a man stocking the shelves so I decided to ask him if they had it in stock. Big mistake this guy stared at me then he was making bird noises and he said something about sleeping in alleys and eating pork and beans with queens or something. I went here two times already, really hoping that my shopping experience will get better, bur NOT!! First time I went here when they just opened. TOTALLY SHOCKED! Same decor as the previous store (dominicks). Went to look for the juice bar and there's none (Why?!). The meat quality was poor. The packaging was unattractive. If you go to other marianos (like the ones on south loop or greektown), you can see that they package the meat nicely. When I checked out, the cashier was nice. BUT (yes there's a but!), when I got home, I looked at my receipt. It seemed that she charged my sugar TWICE. I called them to let them know about this. They said I could come back and get money back for it. But hey, the gas cost more if I have to go back there just for $1. So I let them know, please make sure none of this happen to other customers. Second time I went here (after two months), i went to the pharmacy to ask some help. I was asking about benadryl for my son, but she basically just pointed where to get them without having the effort to explain it to me which one is safe for my 2 year old son. Last but not least, I noticed that the cashier and bagger attitude were not friendly at all. I gave them my grocery bags, the cashier didn't say anything. And the bagger, oh sheesh, she put my bread under heavy items. So the bread basically turned into flat bread. After being disappointed for the horrible shopping experience, I decided to never go to this store anymore. I rather go the extra miles to go to the south loop or greektown. Given my not so well experienced, I still give you guys at marianos a THREE stars. Just because I love marianos (not this location though!). Came here yesterday to buy grape leaves and when I got home I realized one jar was a year old expired and the other was 2 years expired. I went the next day but didn't have a receipt and wanted to return the two Items for unexpired ones. I was able to but not without one of the ladies telling her coworker not to do the return because she didn't believe that we bought the items the day before. When I went to try to get one that wasn't expired the rest on their shelves THAT ARE UP FOR SALE were also still expired. Proof below. Update: I returned to buy something quick and went back to the grape leaves section and low and behold, they put the expired jars I had returned back up on their shelves. This place is not cared for. The carts are all over the parking lot. You have to ask an employee to get the carts from the parking lot. There are no napkins near the soup bar or hot food bar. The shelves aren't stocked very well. I like the Clark street Mariano's better. read more

I usually run in here for flowers and fruit bowls during their midday hours. I'm always pleased with the service I receive and the layout of the store. This store gets a TON of traffic, so things aren't always as tidy as it should be, and their hot bar and salad bar tends to be a little trashed after the lunch rush, so I just frequent this location for the floral arrangements. read more

This is by far THE worst Mariano's I've ever been to thus far. I grew up in the Bridgeport area, and now reside in the Northside of Chicago, so I have shopped at quite a few that blows this one out of the water. Where do I begin? Well, I went there with my mom last night to do my weekly grocery shopping. First of all, this store does not live up to the Mariano's name. Still looks AND feels like the old school Dominick's. Very unfortunate since practically the entire Bridgeport community was ecstatic when word first got out that a new Mariano's was about to open up. I have only been here a handful of times, but not once have I had a satisfactory experience. Produce section is bare, practically nothing left to pick from... fruit all ripened & bruised. I bought a cauliflower and literally had 4 of them to choose from! My mom has been on the hunt for their salad in a bag for the past week now. Manager promised her that it would be back in stock by the time she came back. Guess what? NADA. Not one single bag on the shelf. To top it all off, I purchased 2 packs of Dole fruit cups for my kids. Was about to put one in their snack bags for tomorrow, but they are all expired! Not one but BOTH packs... one dated January 6, 2019... and the other December 13, 2018!! Are you serious?! I mean, this proves that employees here are not rotating their inventory and stocking the shelves properly. Props to me for noticing on time before my 6 & 7 year old end up eating it unknowingly. Makes me wonder though, what else in your store is old & expired? Yes, these were only fruit cups, but what about your dairy? Meats? Lol speaking of meat, they also have a small section of "discounted" steaks. Off to a corner, away from the fresh meat. It was quite obvious too why they were marked down, since they were covered in dark spots. I'm all for not wasting food, but are you seriously still trying to profit off meat that is visibly old?! I DO NOT reccomend this Mariano's to anyone who is looking to stock their fridge. For emergencies, convenience, or a quick run, then maybe. But I'd rather go the other direction to Cermak Produce if that's the case. #DISAPPOINTED read more

It's Friday night...I need cookies for an event. They are on sale! I notice the nice cart carriers outside, carts inside too. Well lighted lot, two entry points to store. Store clean and organized. I step over to the deli packed with hot ready food in warmers across from deli, fresh shushi is on sale, hot delicious chickens and soups, fresh rolls, all the fixings to take home a hot meal. The deli waited on me right away was pleasant and fast! I had forgotten how wonderful these stores are with quality food and produce, bakery, etc. Pleasant cashier, efficient, smiling..what a nice experience. read more

They sure know how to turn loyal customers off. When I asked about the charge at service desk, the attendant mentioned "yeah, we've had a lot of complaints about it" Two points on this: 1 they know about the customers dissatisfaction 2 they do nothing about it And what was their big announcement? Without fail anytime we stop in for one or two items (only go for convenience not for all groceries bc the service is horrid and so is the selection) the cashiers are beyond rude. I wanted to be a hater, I even had a boycott going because they were supposed to open up in my neighborhood and ended up opening in the sloop. Well after they announced the location coming to 39th and MLK I decided to end my protest. This location used to be Dominick's so it still has that feel, however I'd call it a Dominick's on steroids. The salad/hot bars are clean and have more items. I'm generally not a fan of anything buffet style that the public can get their hands into. But in a pinch I'll give some of it a try. I did try their 6$ Chicken Pot pie, a completely packaged item, and found it to be very good. Lots of chicken and veggies and not swimming in gravy, I like it to be moist, but not looking like you need to throw it a life preserver. We used to buy the one at Costco, not only does everything float around in it, it's too salty and too big, (but that's Costco it has to be big) this one is right for one person, or better yet eat a salad with it and split it for two or into a second meal. The produce looks good, and can save you an extra trip to the produce market, it may be a few shekels more but what is your time, gas money or pedal power worth? I can't wait for the one to open up by my house so I can walk or ride my bike to it, can't wait to see what they do building a store from ground up. We do have a Jewel nearby, yet they still call this a food desert, it's because the Jewel isn't really good and people here end up shopping outside of the neighborhood. My hope is that this doesn't put Jewel out, but it gets them to clean up there act and compete. There are enough residents in the area to support both. I'm glad Bridgeport/McKinley got there store and didn't end up without options, and if I'm coming home from that direction even after ours is built I'll support it because they did a good job with it read more

It's brand new! It's nice! I really like our new neighborhood Mariano's! I visited early in the morning, just after 7am. There were only a few other shoppers in the store beside myself, but chipper & friendly employees were everywhere. I was greeted by security as I walked up to the front door, then handed a flier with specials as soon as I stepped inside. I had walked maybe 5 feet (almost zombie-like towards that BEAUTIFUL display of gelato purposefully placed right there by the front door...) when another bright & cheerful employee offered me a sample of fresh orange juice. I quickly grabbed a decaf iced Americano at the Vero Coffee & Gelato cafe (delicious!) then proceeded to mill about & shop. It was so nice shopping so early in the morning; no crowds & fresh fresh fresh items that have not been picked over. I eyed the salad bar & everything looked great. I was happy to see a large organic produce display, & I even found the organic baby food I was looking for. No need to drive further out of the neighborhood for quality organic products! Our new Mariano's replaced the Dominick's store that used to fill this space, so this Mariano's is definitely smaller than other ones I've visited around the city. I definitely noticed the absence of cute places to sit & eat fresh items, & I wondered about their beer & booze selection as I didn't make it over to that side of the store. When I do, I will certainly report back! Momma wants a tasty brew while she shops, & at other Mariano's around the city, I have enjoyed a cold, freshly poured beer with my shopping. I welcome Mariano's to our neighborhood, & I think it'll be a very nice addition to our selection of grocery stores. I was impressed by all the friendly employees, how clean everything looked, how nicely everything was displayed, & also the visible presence of security guards at the doors. I had a wonderful experience at Mariano's. As soon as I walked in I was hit with tons of fresh produce (ummmm not literally) and the fact that I came in in the evening and yet it was still stocked up with hot foods at their salad bar was really nice to see. As I walked around I did notice that someone was always stocking up their aisles with even more items, as soon as it was taken by a customer. That to me says a lot of any establishment because it shows a real dedication to the consumer on so many levels. Big clap of hands to the workers who are dedicated. Many of their isles are packed with items that are hard to find in other places so of course that will bring me to come back over and over. Nice displays, vibrant colors all over and great customer service will always make me come back. And the fact that the girl bagging, offered to help me register for a points plus Mariano's card was nice. As busy as she was she still helped out. read more

I had an Emergency , I had chills and couldn't wait no more and had to go in their. As i walk in there im thinking .. wow CLEAN PLACE. Well i Ran to the restroom which is to your left.. Now I know when Ya'll need to use the restroom you are expecting "Cleaniness" "Peace and Quiet" so you can concentrate.. Now i was sooo DISGUSTED with what i seen in their..."Sewer Flies" !!!! As i covered the toilet seat with toilet paper these sewer flies were attacking me.. like flying close to me on my clothes and by my backside if you All know what i'm talking about. I tried to wiped as i am flickering these insects Away from me.. there was at least 10 or more big ones baby ones i tried stepping on them as much as i can after i got in there. Yeah , you may think it is Not a Huge deal... to me it is when they carry diseases on them. They like fecal matter so after my Bad Experience happened i flushed the toilet washed my hands and ran the Hell out of there! I told a few employees but then complained to David the 5th store Leader! He apologized numerous times but i was Scared for My life because they were All Attacking me!! I know a lot of people in the area was excited to have a Mariano's in the neighborhood and kept wondering when it would open. Once it opened, a lot of people were disappointed since it took so long and it felt like a Dominick's still. Everything like the gelato, grill station are smaller than the other Mariano's. I don't recall seeing sushi available. They just sell the fresh juice on the shelves. I was a bit disappointed too, but still glad to have this in the neighborhood. Workers are friendly. read more

When I got to the checkout, I was informed I had to bag my own items since I brought my own bags. This would be okay if I only had a few items, but I bought over $200 worth of food. There is a long line behind me, the bagger is just staring at me while I bag, and the person at the register continues to check out the next person while I'm still bagging. Essentially, I felt I was being punished for bringing my own bags. Mariano's charges people for their bags under the guise of encouraging people to bring their own bags to promote recycling and reusing bags. But basically, if you want them to bag, you have to buy their bags and create more waste. I was told they don't bag if you bring your own bags because they want to keep their workers "safe". I'm not quite sure how this is keeping them safe since they are still touching items that have been touched by other people. I commend them for caring about the safety of their employees; however, wouldn't buying your employees gloves help to keep them safe while still providing good customer service? Don't be so cheap. Also, pull the blueberries with mold. Yes, you have them on sale, but does that make it okay? Please don't go downhill. read more

It's my local Mariano's grocery store I love shopping at this location. The butcher, named John, is great he knows his stuff. I was able to order a bone-in-beef- standing rib roast with no problems. The beef roast was nicely trimmed and tied to perfection. It made my life a lot easier when I got home to cook it the oven. I say come check out your local Mariano's if you have not done it. They have great customer service comparable pricing on their products and delicious ready made food. read more
