Maria insists upon fresh, never frozen ingredients for her food. Does that mean she can run out of items? Yes, it does. Is the food quality excellent because of the fresh ingredients? Yes it is. The refried beans are excellent, the chicken fajitas are a favorite of mine. If you happen to be there in the summer, ask if she has Bruschetta. It is easily the best Bruschetta I have ever had. I went to Maria's Buena Cocina for lunch today and got some of the freshest, hottest, best fajitas I've ever had in my life. Not only were they amazing but I was greeted with nothing but kindness by my server. Upon enterance I was immediately treated like a daughter and a part of the family. Stopped in for late lunch today. I ordered the chicken tamale dinner and my husband had the chicken taco dinner. We were provided with chips and salsa while waiting. I thought the tamales and rice and beans were very good. My husband didn't really like the chicken tacos. I wasn't a fan of the odd placemats or that no knife was provided in the place setting. The place we were sat by the door was also a bit dirty from people tracking mud and leaves inside and the pothos leaves were dusty. Minor things but together makes me remove a star. read more

It is an understatement for me to say I LOVE Maria's Buena Cocina! Maria's restaurant is tucked into a tiny building in downtown Highland. It give guests a feeling like they are visiting her home and she is feeding you the most delicious, flavorful food! She interacts with her guests between cooking and serving the food. The last time we visited, Maria shared a bowl of a new salsa she made for us to try. Steak taco dinner is my regular choice. The steak is tender and juicy. What a gift Maria's Buena Cocina was to us. We were traveling looking for a non-fast food place to eat and turned off at Highland IN and found Maria's. We were warmly greeted by our waitress and Maria. It wasn't a shallow 'Welcome to ..." but it felt like we we're coming into their home. The food is so good. Several times Maria, and the waitress, came over to make sure we were enjoying everything. I'm repeating myself but again, I felt like Maria had invited us over for dinner. NEW LOCATION BUT SAME GREAT TASTING FOOD. Anything on the menu here is delicious. I stopped for a quick lunch with my fiancé and we got the chicken soup and guacamole. The soup is flavorful and full of veggies and chicken meat. And the guacamole is made fresh by Maria right as you order it. The portions are very generous and we ended up grabbing a doggy bag. This place is not very big but they do a great job accommodating everyone. It has a semi open kitchen concept so you can watch the staff getting stuff done as you are sitting at the bar area. The place was busy when we got there but food doesn't take long to come out of the kitchen. This restaurant do accept credit cards now at this new location. So excited to try this small restaurant. It was such awesome fresh food. We ordered some lemonade and teas. They were great. Refills are free. Quest Fundido with chorizo is excellent. So hot and melty goodness. You also receive a small side of chips and salsa (so fresh and with a bite). I ordered the tostadas and you receive two. You can choose your meat. It comes with rice and beans. Also awesome and fresh. Just enough. The entire meal and service was just great. I really can't wait to go back. I would have given five stars but you can't get a side of guacamole, you must place a complete order for an appetizer portion. It's expensive but also tasty. read more

Walked in and the restaurant smelled amazing!! First great sign. I'm immediately excited to eat here. I came to town to visit some family and a few locals recommended this restaurant. I ordered the caldo de pollo for myself because it was snowing outside and let me say the flavors in that caldo made it one of the best chicken soups I have ever had! I also tried the sampler botana platter and omg was I mind blown. My friend told me to try the mole and one word- authentic! The owner Maria was such a sweet lady. I decided to order 2 of the taco dinners and wow is all I have to say When I first walked in here the vibes I got here were amazing, well lit up, clean and organized...a lot of places in this area really lack of this and makes this place pop out even more! When I sat down at work and opened the box of food I was surprised, I didn't expect it to look, taste, and be so fresh. The carne asada was not old and you can definitely tell it's marinated and cooked freshly and not that cheap steak meat you will find all over, the lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro onion and cheese was also fresh and not that nasty cheap shredded lettuce you would find elsewhere. I live 20 mins away from this place and definitely will be back this week for more! Food is authentic and fresh and with Maria, it's like visiting mom when you haven't seen her in a while.... you ain't leavin hungry. Ever since then I loved Spanish rice! -- Today my boyfriend & I finally got to pop into her cute little spot in downtown highland. I am not exaggerating by saying this ... this was the best Mexican food I've ever had. Everything is home made. the tortillas are just perfect. The meat is so delicious... the ride & beans are so good. It's the best around. The queso fondito is different but it is very good. you can tell they put their heart & souls into this business & It's amazing that we still have places like this. Was told that they have no seafood due to the fact that seafood Hass to be kept in a separate cooler. My wife ordered a steak taco and some Spanish rice and the steak was cold an therice had a little flavor. Ordered the taco dinner and asked for beef on hard shell. They put the meat on the tortilla and deep-fried the whole thing burning the ends of the beef to a crisp giving the first and last bites a burnt flavor which pretty much was the only flavor. This is where I go when I don't want to cook. Honestly the best Mexican place in the area. Very authentic flavors and everything is not just spicy hot , it has actual flavor. From her Crispy Tacos to her Guacamole to her Pozole, it's all good. I don't like eating out much but we go here at least once a week. It is worth the drive if you are not nearby ,it's not too far off the expressway. It is a family run restaurant, so glad we have a restaurant in the area that can truly compare to anything in Chicago.
