Pleasantly surprised! We came in on a Friday night and were seated right away. The restaurant was clean and our server was friendly and attentive the entire time. You know El Jimador #3 is legit, because it has a number in its name. Partial joke aside, this place used to be a bank. They even kept the safe door in the restaurant! So is the food good? Yes. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The fish torta was filled with avocado, fish, lettuce, and tomato on something close to a telera bread. Had to have a horchata, which helped keep the heat down from the salsa and chips. Service was super friendly and accommodated our two families very nicely. I wanted to like this place. We like the location in Winfield. The service was inattentive, we saw our waitress when we ordered, when she dropped off the food, and finally to get the check. Drinks sat empty. The queso fundido was like soup and had almost no chorizo or anything else. No plates were brought for the appetizer. The steak in the tacos was barely seasoned. This place is a joke. Don't bother ordering takeout- it won't be right and it will be charged wrong. We paid $100 for about enough food for three small children and it was a group of 8 people. Either they don't know their menu or they don't care. We called to speak to someone about the error and we were told that we made the mistake in our order, not them. Let me begin by stating, as a Latina I'm extremely picky about Mexican cuisine however, El Jimador has passed the test and is a new local favorite. My family goes through multiple bowls of chips/salsa. My children enjoy their chicken and steak tacos/toastadas and their Horchata. Very good food, service and ambiance at El Jimador in Cedar Lake. I had the burrito cuates and my wife had the chicken enchiladas with a strawberry margarita. First time trying this new place on a Tuesday about 5:30. Got right in and seated ourselves. Kind of an odd setup with the dining area partitioned with a glass window/wall, bar area partitioned off with rope. Must be an old bank building with a huge bank vault door in the back of the place. Quite a bit of seating and had space for outdoor seating but was not set up or was not yet staffed to support that area. Very small number of staff with no dedicated bartender, waitresses serving and bussing tables. They busted their ass working hard though. Food came out slow and the room was quite warm. Food was very tasty, and portion size was good as we had chicken tacos, margarita, cheese appetizer with chorizo and fajitas-steak chicken shrimp (very tasty). Salsa tasted fresh and was very cold (good). Biggest dissatisfaction was the tortilla chips (stale) (both baskets). Hope this place makes it and improves as the staff seemed hard working and doing their best even though kitchen may have been a busy and overwhelmed as the place was full and later on in the evening folks were waiting for a table. Like the homemade chips and atmosphere/inside much better at LaDilla (across the parking lot) but would try this place again if atmosphere (and chips) improve. read more

Based on the reviews on Yelp, I expected to love this place. We were visiting a friend in St. John and wanted to take her out for a good dining experience. While the employees were all cordial and the ambiance acceptable, we were really disappointed with the overall service and quality of the food. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated promptly and given a few minutes to order with chips and salsa brought to the table. We each ordered a regular meal (tamales, flautas, and a torta). After that point, we waited approximately one hour before our food was brought to us. Our server commented a couple times that "oh you're still waiting for your food?" I commented that the food is supposed to be really good so this wait may be worth it. Unfortunately, that was not the case. When we finally got our food, across the board it was just ok, what you'd expect from any Mexican restaurant. We left and all agreed that next time we'd dine elsewhere.
