We came at 5 pm and were seated immediately. The server took our drink and food order. The music is the right level. You can hum along but not so loud you can't talk. This is a family friendly place. We weren't overly hungry so ordered the Tri chips with Queso, salsa and Guac. Our drinks came in take out cups. Chips arrived at the same time. The trio of dips are delicious. I love queso and this is thick with seasoning on top. The quesadilla came with pico, lettuce and sour cream. It tasted just right. No complaints about the food except I was getting full. If I were here again, I would come here. Our server was the only drawback. We saw her to order and she came to refill our cup and I finally had to keep turning to find her before she'd come back. We dined here for lunch on a Saturday and were seated right away. The hostess was friendly, and our waiter was nice as well. The restaurant is described as Latin/Mexican, though we noticed the kitchen staff didn't appear to be Latin or Hispanic, which stood out to us. One thing that surprised us was that chips and salsa are not complimentary. The menu itself is huge--burgers, quesadillas, bowls, fried fish, wings, and more--so it felt more like a mix of different cuisines than a traditional Mexican spot. We did order the chips and salsa, and honestly, that ended up being the best thing we had. For our entrées, I ordered the fried fish and my husband got the BBQ shrimp quesadilla. His quesadilla was extremely runny and messy, and the only flavor that really came through was the BBQ sauce it was heavily covered in. My fried fish portion was generous, but the flavor was just okay. I ended up eating only about two pieces. I also tried the blood orange margarita, which was decent but tasted like it barely had any alcohol in it. I wanted to make you aware of an unfortunate experience our family had at your restaurant yesterday following a high school graduation celebration. We had a party of nine and arrived with five members of our group already present. Before coming, we had called ahead to ask about reservations and were told that reservations were not accepted for parties under 20 people. We also attempted to reserve online, but the system would only allow reservations for up to six guests. When we arrived, we explained this to the host/manager and mentioned that we had been told over the phone that we would likely be seated soon after arrival. Rather than listening to or acknowledging the confusion, he dismissed our explanation entirely and stated, "We don't even use that service," referring to the online reservation platform. The response came across as abrupt and unconcerned, despite the fact that we were simply trying to follow the options available to us. From the moment we arrived, the host appeared visibly irritated and informed us that although accommodations for nine were available, we would not be seated until every member of our party was present. While we understand restaurants have policies, the interaction quickly became unnecessarily hostile. What made the situation even more frustrating was that my 82-year-old mother-in-law was with us and needed to be seated comfortably while we waited for the remaining members of our family to arrive. Despite this, there seemed to be very little empathy or flexibility shown. When we respectfully questioned the conflicting information we had been given, the host responded rudely and at one point stated that they could refuse to seat or serve us simply because we were questioning the process. The interaction became uncomfortable enough that several other staff members appeared visibly embarrassed by how the situation was being handled. Rather than continue the confrontation, our entire party chose to leave. Unfortunately, this meant your restaurant lost business from a group of nine customers who had intended to celebrate an important family occasion there. I am not writing this simply to complain, but because I believe ownership should be aware of how this situation was handled. A calm explanation of policy would have been understandable; however, the dismissive and confrontational attitude from the host created an unnecessarily negative experience. We have heard many positive things about Maria's Cantina, which made this especially disappointing. I hope this feedback is helpful moving forward. read more

Best Burger Ever This place is super popular with my friends. It's close to the school we all used to work at together so we ended up here a lot. They have great food and magical margaritas that come in a cute little mason jar. One is always enough for me. The habanero chicken isn't spicy to me but the flavors were good enough it didn't matter. The rice bowl surprised me at first since that's usually an Asian thing but every one I've tried has been fabulous. Bring on the cultural mixing! They have burgers here that taste like what angels eat. I mean, seriously, I don't even like burgers and I would get another burger from here. They're legitimately juicy and tasy and goodness have mercy I am craving their burgers and that's pretty much never happened before. My favorite of all time is the Loco Moco, which is such an off-putting name (crazy booger) but it tastes so good I just ignore the gross name. Their Chipotle Burger also comes with really good sauce. The Jalapeno Burger was surprisingly my least favorite of them all. I didn't like the Seafood Fajita Dinner but I know I've had Mahi Mahi and liked it before. I guess I like it better with some kind of sauce or something. It was seasoned and grilled but didn't have much flavor. One was chewy and when I mentioned it (TMJ makes it difficult to eat chewy stuff) the manager was super cool about it and brought me some extra shrimp to fix it. I liked the shrimp a lot but the rest of the Shrimp Fajitas just didn't do it for me. I would get more things with shrimp in them but I think I am done with the fajitas. The Chimichurri Shrimp is amazing with dirty rice and pinto beans. I loved mixing those together. Their guac is ok (not chunky enough for me). I think I prefer the El Diablo chicken in enchiladas and the grilled chicken in quesadillas. I also really liked the tequila lime chicken in the rice bowl moreso than in the nachos but hubby liked it in his build your own burrito done Maria's Way. The cilantro-lime rice is not surprisingly pretty boring by itself. Overall it's been an enjoyable experience every visit. Maria's was very good about 6 years ago. Today, the food was not so good. The egg rolls were fried extremely hard. The side lettuce, sour cream and pico de mayo were little to none. The service staff were excellent. There needs to be an update on the taste of food and maybe update on the menu. read more

Great visit over the past weekend at Maria's. As I said in my last visit it looked like it was going to be a lot more crowded (Sunday afternoon during NFL and Memphis Tigers hoops on tv as well) but nope, not crowded and no wait at all to be seated. Our server took our orders, a couple of which were kind of complicated. And didn't write a single thing down. Everything did come correctly so okay nice impressive memory however it really only serves to make me nervous and worry things won't be correct. Our chips and salsa appetizer came just a couple minutes before the main courses did, so timing out of the kitchen was a tad off. This could have made for a crazy crowded table except that Maria's booths have really nice big tables with plenty of room. Very good food, both the chips and salsa and the main courses. I got a side salad with my Cuban, the side salad was YUGE. I ordered the salad with spicy ranch and that was a good salad dressing. My Cuban came with no panini lines so that means they must be using a plancha, ya tu sabes!. But my Cuban also came with no pickles. Dios mio de pinga! Drinks were never allowed to get empty, our server stopped by and got us all refills. All in all a good visit I do enjoy this place. read more

Seems that everyone decided to stop in Saturday before the R&B super Jam concert. Parking: large pot hole that definitely causes issues in the dark. Wait time: quickly seated before the rush of patrons came about 20mins afterwards Service: waitress kept missing up items ordered or forget them altogether. Had to repeatedly remind her of things when she returned. Cocktails: the online menu prices are outdated so if you look at cocktails beforehand there you will notice the difference on the restaurant menu. Despite this, I still chose the prickly pear margarita with sugar rim. The prickly pear flavor was noticable yet the alcohol was none existent. Same with all the other drinks ordered at the table ( 4/5 drinks were not prickly pear were also very weak. Another in the party also had same issue with their prickly pear). Food:guac definitely had no seasoning which did impact taste. We ended up requesting salt and limes to alter it. My latin grilled shrimp dirty rice bowl with added mushrooms was perfect. No complaints there. I would for sure order this again Ambiance: I appreciated the music wasn't so loud you couldn't hear. Well lit inside. Televisions present as well. Overall 3/5 read more

It is a bit loud so if you aren't into the sports bar sort of thing this might not be for you. I didn't mind it though. We had so much fun eating here! The margaritas were delicious! I really like their chips, cheese dip and salsa. The chips have some kind of yummy seasoning on them that sets them above the standard salsa chip. I had the shredded chicken quesadilla with mushrooms. Whoever the little host was Sunday 5/24/26 had the worst attitude. He was short-tempered and obviously in over his head attempting to manage the areas post-graduation groups. He seemed more focused on making sure the gathering crowd was aware he was in charge and not welcoming the business. He made no effort to offer those waiting a seat in the waiting area which world have cleared the door - no effort to offer those waiting for the rest of their party to arrive to perhaps have a drink in the bar area that was not crowded - nothing. Just hostile announcements that they do not use the online reservation system (where their website directs you to make reservations), he would not be seating anyone without their entire party present (despite some customers having been told otherwise when phoning the restaurant) and he didn't have to serve anyone who gave him a "hard time" - even threatening to throw out a group who dared to suggest they update their website and train those answering the phone what the policies are. Very unfortunate for those trying to celebrate on a day where large groups should have been prepared for and welcomed. read more

I was super excited to come here based on the reviews. However. My experience here was subpar. The restaurant was pretty empty with the exception of a bridal party in the back. We were arrived, we weren't greeted so we didn't know if we should wait to be seated or seat ourselves. My fiancé walked over to a server to asked about seating in a booth. Our server was pretty polite and friendly. I ordered a spicy margarita but asked for top shelf liquor- which I didn't get. (Not a big deal). We placed our order. Two catfish platters and a steak quesadilla. The food came quickly. JMO- both orders of the catfish platter looked burnt and smelled a little scorched. I taste a piece of the catfish which tasted too salty for my liking. They didn't like their meals but didn't want to complain. The tartar sauce taste was different.... The quesadilla was plentiful but super bland. The steak wasn't seasoned. Maybe we chose to come at a bad time of day (late afternoon) but it didn't live up to the hype that I was expecting. read more

Update (2021): I was looking for a cool patio on a warm Mississippi day, and decided to give Maria's Cantina another shot, knowing that they have a misted patio. I was much more pleased than in previous visits. While the service was slow, I attributed this to Covid because the waitress was still very friendly and attentive. It was a little difficult to get a drink at the bar, but our server, Jessica, was very attentive. They were out of the regular cheese dip, but luckily Jessica gave us the heads up, and we ordered the salsa and guacamole app. The chips are thin and crispy, but beware if you have picky eaters with you, as they are dusted in "seasonings." The salsa is good but had a strong cinnamon flavor. I love cinnamon in certain Mexican food: Chile poblaño/ relleno is my favorite. Guacamole needed more lime juice, some cilantro, and salt in my honest opinion. My kids had grilled cheese with fries and chicken fingers with fries. I had to send one order of fries back, as they had the same aforementioned "seasoning." Both kids enjoyed their meal and I tried a bite of the chicken fingers, which were obviously breaded with Captain Crunch cereal crumbs and therefore amazing and delicious!! Husband and I had the tuna ceviche and it was okay, but needed more flavor. I would recommend some heat, and I'm not much for spicy food, but I can recognize a missing flavor component. I perfer the corn chips served with the ceviche over the thin and crispy ones that came with the salsa and guac. Husband ordered the fried Mahi Mahi tacos with rice and beans. The beans were loaded with oregano and pretty good, the cilantro lime rice was a little bland. I did not try the taco, as my husband said it was "okay." I had the ground sirloin quesadillia. It was good, but different for sure. Very saucy, which we love, but really reminded me of sloppy Joe meat. Still good. Would I recommend this place to a friend? Sure, but only if you make educated decisions before ordering. I was too tired to read the lengthy menu, as I drove five hours to get to Southaven (my own fault). The drinks were strong and very affordable! Everyone around me was eating the chicken, so I probably should have studied the menu more thoroughly, but like I said, a five hour road trip with two kids really wears one out! read more

Definitely would not recommend. I've gone multiple times before and the food was edible, the service was good, and the drinks were great. However this last encounter was awful. Our party never got the chance to order food; we only ordered drinks because our server had so many issues. She complained that management wouldn't allow her to leave and she was sick. She went into graphic details about her illness and just say I had to stop drinking my top shelf BLOOD orange margarita because of the things she was talking about. Miraculously she was granted the opportunity to leave as we were waiting to order food. Another server came over and we just wanted our checks at this point. There were people in our party that didn't even drink their alcohol drinks because they required food to do so but we were still expected to pay full price for everything. The owner came over and gave a half apology but nothing was done to remedy the situation. Never Again?
