Tremendous fresh Mexican food, open from breakfast through dinner. The location is now a small lot next to the VFW on Mt Rushmore Rd, Custer's main street, roughly between 6th and 7th Streets. There is dining at picnic tables, under a tent, behind the food truck. We found it at dinnertime on a rainy night when visiting Custer and the food was so good we immediately made plans to stop by for breakfast the next morning. The generously-filled and tender tamales and the green chile burritos are standouts and they do great sausage or chorizo breakfast burritos as well. My fiancé tried a breakfast burrito and although he was not impressed, he and I decided to give them another chance for dinner, mostly because the food truck is directly by us. We were quickly filled with disappointment. I had a bean and cheese burrito. The refried beans were runny, like a sauce almost, and an abnormal off brown color. The cheese was not melted. We ordered two pork tamales with red roasted salsa, a pork chimichanga with guacamole salsa and a pork burrito. We've traveled in Mexico a lot as well as all over the Southwest, lived in Colorado and have dined in Mexican restaurants, dives, food trucks extensively. As Rapid City residents who like going for morning family hikes in Custer State Park, we pass through Custer regularly, and so I'm always looking for the perfect spot to stop for a post-hike lunch (covered in mud, sweaty, kids half-asleep). With Maria's Mexican, I think I've finally found the perfect solution. My wife and I had the green chile pork burritos and our daughter had the kid's cheese quesadilla. The burritos were excellent; just the right level of heat for a very good burrito. The quesadilla had too much cheese for the two-year old's taste (!), but she's used to our questionable practice at home of quesadillas being mostly filled with refried black beans, not cheese. But anyway, she did eat some, she liked the juice and the apple sauce it came with, and it was only four dollars. Frankly, anytime a two year who just went on a two mile hike eats anything, its a miracle. As noted by many of the reviews, Yelp has the address wrong: the food truck is located next to the VFW (721 Mt Rushmore Rd). I also asked while ordering my burrito what the hours were yesterday (07-03-2016) and she said 7 AM - 8 PM, Monday-Saturday (Closed Sunday). Maria's success over the years is due entirely to the consistently good food and outstanding service that clearly comes from the heart. We've seen her business grow from a charming catering trailer beside the VFW to expansion into the VFW basement level (lots of seating and cute decor, with fresh flowers at every table!). My mother has ordered dozens of handmade tamales and tortillas over the years, all made with love and ready to pickup by appointment. Her menu features "greatest hits" common to Mexican restaurants, but with authentic flavors and a Oaxacan twist (I'm guessing, my husband's family is from Chihuahua). Her posole recipe is so good, a green posole that you can get with chicken or pork. I also love her chile rellenos; the egg batter is so fluffy and light, like a cloud! If burritos or fajitas are more your speed, get ready for HUGE portions! They've got takeout containers; your lunch tomorrow is covered. The chips and salsa come with a gently spicy bean dip that is to die for. And everything at reasonable prices. Two tips: if you want a beer or margarita with your meal, order it upstairs at the VFW and you are free to bring it down to Maria's to enjoy. Also, during peak season, you can also often find Maria's original trailer open for quick food to go! Ordered 3 steak tacos on corn tortillas with rice and beans. Opened the box and there's 2 steak tacos on flour tortillas. When we went back to ask about it the girl said they didn't have any corn tortillas that weren't frozen and only 2 flour tortillas not frozen. So she gave us "the meat for 3 tacos on 2 flour tortillas." Didn't even ask if it was alright to change it, or offer a discount. Rice tasted like plain rice with taco seasoning. Hands down best place in Custer!! I really can't believe that this exists in the black hills where the palette tends to be more American than anything else. We have been staying in Custer State park and have been here twice in two days! The tamales are incredible and so are the burritos!! Everything is home made and really good. There really are two restaurants here, the food trailer and in the basement of the Vets Club witch is a sit down restaurant. The atmosphere is nothing incredible but it really is amazing food!! The lady seemed impatient with me when I want to know the different fillings in different types of food, coz I'm not very familiar with Mexican food. Wow! Absolutely the best Mexican food in a 200 mile radius! So good, we ate here 2 days in a row. Everything is homemade and delicious- it has a Tex-Mex flavor to it. I was skeptical when I saw a taco truck in Custer. Its not the place I would look for such a thing, but being the taco hound I am I had to give it a try. Each taco was made to order, so it took a little while, but it was worth the wait. We got a mixture of beef and chicken tacos that were "spicy". My wife and I like spicy and usually the hottest level is pretty low for us so we always try....boy were we wrong. These were thermonuclear. You win some you lose some....but they were still tasty.
