Stopped here on a Thursday night after visiting some of the local monuments. We didn't know what to expect but were certainly surprised by the excellent reception and tour from one of the hostesses. She showed us around the place and explained how it all works. The self-serve beers and wine are charged by the ounce, which is different. But, it allows you to try them all for a little investment and then you get what you like. We weren't hungry so we didn't order food. We enjoyed the beautiful weather and sat outside by the creek. Very enjoyable! We decided to return a couple days later and get the pizza. It was Sunday night so it wasn't crowded at all. The two staff members were great to chat with and hear about their lives, friends and how they ended up in South Dakota. It was a great conversation, and I wish those ladies the best. Such a fun experience! They have a system set up where you can serve yourself beer and it charges you by the oz so we got to try a bunch of different beers while we were there. Nightmare. Worst dinning experience. Ever. Some tech geek got all excited about guests serving them selves. This place has to lose so much money in food cost. We literally were told to grab our own drinks and just keep track of it.?? in order to order food. We had to do it on our phone so as they could text us when our food was ready. We had my son's wedding rehearsal tonight at the prairie dog taproom and it was wonderful. We worked with Mike via email and phone to get everything setup as we are from wyoming. This went really smooth. Got there this afternoon a little early to finalize the rehearsal, dinner and social gathering. We met with Haley (spelling, sorry if wrong). She was such a pleasure to work with. She kept us informed several times as to where our tab was and questioned if there were some people that tried to add to our tab if she didn't believe they were with our party. We had about 50-60 people that had shown up for this event through the night and Haley and her staff was wonderful. The food was amazing, pizza, meatball sliders, hot dogs, brats, chips and quesso, beans and salad. Cookies and brownies for dessert. Everything was fantastic. The atmosphere was such a pleasure, with as many people that were in our party we were comfortable and were able to communicate with each other. The kids were able to go out in the back to play games and use sidewalk chalk on the patio. I highly recommend the Prairie Dog Taproom for your large parties or just go to have a pleasant dinner and drinks. Thanks for everything to the staff, you all were amazing. read more

Nice big place with huge bar and lots of smaller seating nooks. Great backyard. It's fun to taste different beers and create your own tasting. They do have limited wine and you can buy a bottle there in the attached market. I didn't try the food but the pizza looked great. read more

This is the best place to dine and drink in Hill City. When you are tired of burgers and subpar service. Come here. Great concept. They have several beers and wines that you pay by the ounce. Owner essentially yelled at one of our friends about how to pour the beer, which is essentially the premise for the place, and instead of dealing with this discretion by itself involved our entire table. The pizza and the tots were delicious! However, the hot dog was cold and very underwhelming. For a place called Prairie Dog, I expected some creative and impressive hot dogs. This food truck was our amazing find after doing the Black Elk trailhead hike. We had two delicious Bison hot dogs to fuel us back up. Tried the Settler's claim and Tatanka Dog. Both were amazing. I would say the Tatanka dog is a little more refreshing because of the fresh coleslaw and the Settler's claim is heavy on the sauerkraut if you are a fan. The sauerkraut is so tasty- they add a nice garlicky touch to it. The service is outstanding and I appreciated how kind the staff was with making sure we enjoyed out food and the texting order delivery system.
