Wow!! This was our first time here. It will not be our last. My wife ordered enchiladas, her favorite Mexican meal, I ordered Maria's Fajitas. Plus guacamole and chips. The guacamole was absolutely excellent!! Avocado with onion, a little jalapeno, was amazing. The chips generic. The enchiladas were so good, my wife couldn't stop eating them. The fajitas were so good, I had to move the plate away just to stop eating. Portions were huge. I have a couple of issues:. No tortillas for the fajitas and no salsa for seasoning. Really busy lunch. That would explain the few times we saw our waitress and the reason she refilled my sweet tea with unsweetened tea. She was working pretty hard and she earned her tip. The food was good. I would say it was better than the average Mexican restaurants in the area. The complimentary salsa came in a mild and hot version. That would have been good to know before I tried it. Man, that stuff was hot! Listen, I don't want to gloss over this so I'll say it again; that stuff was hot! When I looked at the menu, I saw a list of daily specials. Today's special didn't seem great but the next day's sounded tasty. I asked the waitress about getting the next day's special (I figured I would simply have to pay full price for it) but she said it wasn't possible. What? That's weird. It's not like it was lobster flown in once a year from the coast of Kansas (you've never had Kansas lobster? You're really missing out.). I took what was offered today and it was good. Went there Sunday afternoon. Bigger menu than expected, but the waitress' English wasn't great and service was just okay. I'd ordered a mixed enchilada plate, but instead of avoiding just a sour cream sauce, they'd covered it in white cheese sauce. It wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. A rather large group of us ate our evening meal at Maria's. I heard no complaints from anyone. Speaking for myself, I was quite satisfied. The menu is very large. Prices are very reasonable, and considering the portions, that might be an understatement. Service was excellent. That's sometimes a problem with large groups of people. No concerns there. I had a combo plate that had two enchiladas, a tostada, rice and beans. All of it was very good. The plate was huge, and filled from edge to edge. I'm no light eater and I still had to bring about 1/3 of the meal home. All that for 8 bucks. Like most Mexican cuisine restaurants, Maria's keep the chip and salsa coming. Really good quality chips. They had two versions of salsa. I only ate the hotter one because that's my preference. Excellent. I've had hotter, but this is not for the faint of heart. The flavor was terrific. Habanero based, I believe. I also added it to everything on my plate. I like hot and spicy. Maria's delivered. Ft. Smith has quite a few Mexican restaurants. Many have the same menu and serve the same dishes. Close your eyes and try to guess where you're eating. You can't. Maria's is different. They tend to stay busy, the service can be a bit slow and the quality of food varies from okay to meh. The other day I went to Maria's for lunch and got a chicken burrito. When they brought it to my table i noticed a piece of the chicken was a little pink, i thought maybe it could be the sauce but after i took a bite i noticed all the chicken in the burrito was pink and immediately asked for a to go box. i didn't want to be rude and say anything so i just threw it away once i left the restaurant. Days later, i suffered from stomach cramping, vommitting, diharrea, high fever, chills, and loss of appetite. I had food poisoning so i will not be going back and i recommend you always check the meat before you take a bite, because it might not even be cooked. read more

We went there for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Service was okay. There were about 12 tables with one waitress and one busboy. They were slow to seat other people, slow to take the orders, and slow to bus the tables. The food was good and generous portions. Other diners plates looked good also. The flautas were very oily. Let me start off saying that I am a regular patron of this restaurant and typically the service is excellent and the food delicious... but after tonight's dinner I will never be taking my family there again. First, there was a white curly hair in one of the salsas. Hairs happen so after being mildly grossed out, we sat the salsa aside. Not a huge deal. Second, my daughters taco was SWIMMING in grease. The tortilla was soggy and completely inedible. Grosss. Alright this is annoying...I give her some of my rice. I don't need to eat that much anyway... Third, and the last straw... I take a bite of my sopapilla expecting cinnamon and sugary sweetness, instead it's SALT, everyone's sopapillas are covered in SALT!!! Everyone gags and starts spitting onto their plates. Time to leave before I start yelling. I inform the waitress, who does apologize and says I won't have to pay for the sopapilla. Thanks, thanks a lot. We've had Mexican food almost every Friday night of our marriage which is pushing 34 years. I know, it's a rut, but we like it. We moved 4 years ago to Fort Smith and immediately began our quest for Mexican food so we hit several restaurants in Fort Smith. We finally decided that Maria's was what we were looking for. It's menu is varied enough to keep us interested in trying new things but it also has consistency so that you know when you order something you are getting what you want. I really like the Mexicano Burrito. It's huge with three different sauces on it to resemble the Mexican flag. Their prices are very inexpensive and the service is almost always friendly and swift. But they can get very busy and there is almost no waiting area. The decor leaves a lot to be desired, but if you want atmosphere with dinner you can go someplace else. Many Hispanic families eat here and the service people are all Hispanic so it seems fairly authentic. read more
