I've been to this tiny sliver of a restaurant several times for breakfast and I've never been disappointed. Generous and delicious plates that are as pretty as some food porn photo shoot. There are sprinkles of greens and dollops of sour cream that aren't needed, but show a bit of love and care. It's not Super Chain general Mexican food. The last time I was there, on a busy Saturday morning, my friend and I started with mimosas. They kept us company while our waitress hustled around a packed restaurant because somebody was late. She kept things rolling, but if I had had just coffee, I might not have been so mellow. She kept checking on our mimosas, we ordered more, and asked about our meals without making us feel hustled. There was a quick turn over of tables and ours was being readied for the next dinners soon after we paid. Go. Enjoy. Maria's is a hidden gem. read more

Noooo not again.. another local business just isn't the same anymore. I understood the tough times through covid and still supported since this is when it all started. Higher prices and smaller proportions but the portions specially the tacos as so small, hardly any meat and most of all the flavor isn't happening. Had no problem paying a little more if the flavor is on point. I would have thought a total different place or owners if the same customer services wasn't there. Sadly that is about it. Thanks to yelp for always helping in the search for the infamous question with family after church "where do you want to go eat"? I found this restaurant on yelp and came out from Porter Ranch area. I love to view all the pics and skim through some reviews. I am so glad we made it here today as we were all ready to EAT! You would miss it with a drive by and we're out in Simi a lot so can't believe it's our first time here. Cute and cozy restaurant and very clean. They do have a bar available, micheladas looked yummy! I love breakfast and would have ordered up some pancakes, but the variety of omelettes had me under their rapture. I went for the green chile verde omelette with side of beans and rice. It was fluffy like a quiche and huge portion, for me at least! It was amazing! I'm a huge rice fanatic and very picky, rice is really flavorful as are the beans (possibly Peruvian)? My mom enjoyed a small menudo and gave it a 2 thumbs up. You know Mamas are picky about their menudo! My Husband had the chorizo burger and devoured it. It was huge! My daughter loved her rice & beans and tamale plate, she's a picky eater too! Guac was fresh and the chips and salsa are too, very good all around. Took home some chicken enchiladas for my son and he said they were "bomb enchiladas"! Thank you to the amazing young woman who served us and offered up her suggestions and very attentive. We are ill most definitely come back and enjoy more menu items. For those people who think place is pricey, you should check out Don Cucos or chains like El Torito pricing and compare the authenticity and quality! You always get what you pay for and in this case with amount of food and items we received, it was well worth it! I went here for lunch today with my husband around 1pm and it was quite busy. It's pretty small inside but we got a table quickly. I got the enchilada combo and it was really good. I have to say the food came quickly but after we got our food the service was lacking. We had trouble getting refills on our drinks and then we were done for 10ish minutes waiting for our check and a box for my food. Another downside is that they didn't serve any chips and salsa. I'm not sure if they never do or just at lunch but I was kind of bummed. Prices are fair for the amount of food. I would try again but I hope the service is better next time. read more

Disclaimer: the following review applies only to their Sunday brunch. We have not had any of their meals on their own, and I'm sure (or at least I hope) the food from their regular menu is exceptional. I would go back some time to see for myself. What I wouldn't go back for is said brunch. First of all I have to warn you, because nobody warned me, that it will cost you 30 dollars each, plus extra for whatever drinks you get. That's a lot for such small a place. El torito had a much bigger and more diverse brunch spread and it cost much less. If you want to spend that much on a brunch buffet, go to a country club or something. To the food itself, my wife got an omelette and hated it. She said the eggs tasted raw. I got a slice of beef and it wasnt bad. It wasnt good either, but it wasnt bad. Chewy and moreover tasteless. They had some Mexican dishes to try, like tortilla soup and enchiladas. I tried the latter and they were disgusting. It wasnt all bad. The pancakes were infused with some kind of lemon creme and tasted delicious. The sausage links were also quite good. Bacon tasted like it had been sitting out a long time, and we got there literally when it started. The dessert treats were good too. Very limited, but good. The brownies melt in your mouth which is perfect. The fountain coke was excellent. My wife got coffee and couldn't finish a cup because it tasted so bad. The wait staff is exemplary. No complaints there. Just, for the price, the selection and the quality of the buffet is not good enough. Disappointing. Hope their regular items are better. read more

We love this place! Probably the best restaurant in Simi. You can actually taste the love in everything they make and serve. Even when you walk in, you feel...love! Family-owned and operated, and everyone is always so kind and helpful! Everything they serve is amazing. Breakfast, lunch AND dinner. Our favorite is breakfast, and they always accommodate when we have family in town; we call ahead but regularly bring large groups of 10-15 people. The restaurant is small, even after their expansion several years ago, but it is brightly decorated with Mexican (and/or Central American) folk art, and the floors/tables/chairs are always very clean and comfortable. I've never had a bad experience, and we've been dining at Maria's for YEARS. Don't go if you're in a hurry. My heart goes out to the staff when they're busy and they come over to take our drink order, and they start apologizing for the wait. I'm always so happy to see when they have a full house, and that this family is able to operate a successful restaurant (even though COVID closures, then offering takeout, then reopening...always in compliance with various County safety measures). Unbelievable! Great restaurant. Family-owned. Everything made from scratch and they use fresh ingredients (they freeze some of the blueberries). Best tamale I ever had in my life. Just meh. You let us down, Yelp. I had a Caesar and albondigas soup for $14. My husband had machaca eggs, and my son had the taquitos with rice and beans. The prices were kind of on the high side. Our server was great and was the only good thing I really have to say about the place. The seating is kind of crowded and uncomfortable- no booths. We all agreed that the food was maybe three stars, but definitely not the four and a half stars they are currently rated by over 300 people. What the heck? Did we all order the wrong thing or do people in this area not know what good Mexican food tastes like??? Hmmm. The breakfasts here are very similar to what they were when this was Harolds. Huge portions and delicious. The variety of omelettes is great, the carne asada chilaquiles is my favorite. Kids meals are the right size and their pancakes are fluffy and enjoyable. They make their own pink lemonade and the coffee is strong. Not a very big place but definitely worth the wait for breakfast. Haven't had the chance to try dinner...but that is next on the list. read more

We went for dinner and were not impressed. The guacamole is excellent but there must have been a timing issue in the kitchen the beans and rice on both my wife and my dish were very cold while the entree was hot. My 7 year old daughter ordered chicken fingers and fries. The chicken was fuzzy, in that it looked like someone had wiped them with a cotton towel and fibers were all over them. The fries were absolutely terrible and looked and tasted like they were on their second round of heating. The manager comped us a couple things and said our next meal was on the house, but I don't think we will be back. The food was simply not great. Maybe their breakfast is better but I don't recommend them for dinner. read more

The margueritas were wonderful but the sangria was just OK. I loved my entree of fish tacos and the beans and rice were scrumptious. Unfortunately, the rest of our party was not too pleased with their dishes. The signature seafood stew was watery and did not have even one scallop. The lime chicken had no lime whatsoever! I've been to Maria's twice now. The ambiance is nice and the place is clean. First, the good: Chips & salsa Guacamole Albondigas soup Carne asada Rice & beans My first visit here, I ordered one of my staples: the nachos. They use the wrong cheese. When the cheese starts to cool, everything is hardened and it's not really nachos anymore. My second visit I ordered the enchiladas. They have no enchilada sauce. Which kind of ruins the whole thing. Both times I had the albondegas soup and it was phenomenal. Seriously the best I have ever had the broth itself was bursting with flavor. I would 100% recommend it. The nachos and enchiladas were super disappointing. However, one thought I had was "is this a different region of Mexican food that we aren't used to?" read more

This was some seriously good corn beef hash. I like to get my eggs over medium. Most places do not get them right, but Maria's got the eggs just right. I was very pleased. The portion size was very large and I had to get a box for half of it. Since the main theme of this restaurant is Mexican, I was able to get some homemade quality corn tortillas with my meal instead of toast. I would say though if you are looking for good coffee this is not it. The coffee is just standard diner quality; good but not great. Overall, I hope to come back and try the dinner or lunch. A girlfriend and I ate lunch here last week and it was fantastic. The salsa was fresh with a bit of a kick. The chips were fresh and crispy. She has a burrito that was huge! I had beef tacos and they were spot on. My only complaint was there were several flies around our table (could have been because it was 101 degrees and we were sitting by the door. ) but otherwise it was a fantastic lunch. Okay so I usually do not complain but this place is horrible we did a pickup order and it was one of the worst breakfast my husband myself and my son ever had. It was kind of funny we ask for refried beans and it was like watery chunky poopy beans. We ordered a chorizo and meat omelette and the cheese was very poor quality. I just wasn't happy with the whole experience of the meal. Also we ordered the biscuits and gravy very oily poor quality. And this is just my experience with the food. I don't want to talk bad about customer service because I really did not experience customer service since I picked up my order. read more
