Lemon bars are the best!! Actually, everything I've gotten here has been really good. And I've tried many things - Very Berry Pie, veggie and broccoli/cheese pasties, toffee, various cookies and cookie bars... I also love the Mandarin Orange Cake despite not being a big cake person. I cannot stress enough how much I love Marilyn's, and Marilyn herself. She has a great story of starting her own business when her husband became ill and she had to support the family. Now retired, her daughter runs the business but Marilyn still is involved. She knows more about pie crust than anyone I know. And it shows. Her pies are the best ever. I have eaten much pie in my life, so I know. My fave is the mixed berry. I was at an event recently where they served this as dessert, and instead of pieces they gave you individual mini-pies about the size of a pot pie, with a dollop or real whipped creme. Never in my life have I so wanted to finish a piece of food and been unable to. It was just too big. And too wonderful. But if they're out of that, try anything else. It's all good. Real ingredients, grown on the family farm behind the store (which is part of a garden center, too). The taste comes through so much better than the crap at grocery stores. They also have quiches and sandwiches during the warmer months of the years, plus other pastries and cakes that are also very, very good. But be warned, this is not a place to count calories, unless you plan on counting very high. Their food is not low fat, but once in a while, it doesn't matter. Delicious pies and treats. But I mainly go for the pie. Usually I'll hit Johnsons for some strawberries and rhubard then grab a sandwich at Marilyn's. Whenever my uncle is in the area I always ask him to pick up a pie so I can indulge in the deliciousness. read more

My neighbor gave my family a huge apple pie she purchased, the same day, from this place. As a person who bakes everything homemade (from scratch using fresh, pure ingredients) ranging from breads to cakes to pies to cheesecakes to cookies, for my family, Marilyn's Bakery's apple pie was ok; nothing to really brag about. My 6- and 8-year-old sons were NOT impressed with their pie. After one slice, they didn't want any more. And, my husband, who loves eating sweets, didn't care for the pie. He thought I purchased it from a store. I threw our the pie, which had a nice looking lattice on the top. Marilyn's Bakery has the best pies I've ever eaten in my life. They're all really good. Since the actual location of this place is so far away from downtown Chicago, I usually go to the Lincoln Square Farmers Market to get a pie from here. Their pies are sold there on Tuesdays in the summer and fall. read more

Such a great bakery! I discovered them at a local farmers market and have made the drive to Hobart several times to visit since then and it's worth it every time. The bakery is nice and has a small lunch selection and great assortment of drinks (tea, coffee, etc) and tables for you to sit and eat inside. Their blueberry donuts and scones are amazing!! OK, dudes. I live in Chicago and happened upon this place while coming back from apple picking. We wanted to find some apple donuts, but alas, there were none to be had. What they did have were cupcakes. Dear, holy goodness, they were flawless. Living in Chicago, I've paid through the nose for designer cupcakes from places like Magnolia, and I can say, with impunity, that Magnolia can suck it. THIS PLACE has the best cupcakes in the Midwest, no lie. I would honestly be OK driving 45 minutes just for these cupcakes. My waistline would suffer, but my heart would be made whole. We randomly stopped in here after berry picking and I was pleasantly surprised. My kids and I ate lunch and had dessert (included with our meals!). Everything was fresh and tasty. The restaurant is environmentally friendly and uses fresh ingredients. I talked with the man that works there and his daughter and they were very welcoming and friendly! It's nice to have a bakery with an assortment of pies and other sweet temptations. It is true that the prices are quite high for just regular pies and other items. I was a bit disappointed though that they don't specialize in fresh baked breads. I have a menu from them and it stated that they had sourdough bread. When i went in to buy it, the staff stated that they didn't make it. I have been purchasing it at the Farmer's Markets either in Hobart or Chesterton made by other bakeries during the summer. Unfortunately they aren't local bakeries. Why is it so hard to find special items in Northwest Indiana?? read more

OMG...if it is available, you have to get the very berry cake. It is layers of yellow cake, whipped cream frosting, and a berry filling with fresh blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, and raspberry. I'm not a big cake fan, but I actually took a second piece because it was so good! I plan on having the leftovers with coffee tomorrow! Love this place! The location is adorable and they have great food and baked goods! We ordered our wedding cake from here and had an excellent experience! Laura was very helpful, accommodating to any changes and requests we had, professional, and friendly. The cake was DELICIOUS! When my husband and I first cut the cake and took a bite, we were both surprised at how incredibly good it was even though we knew how tasty the cakes are. The fondant was actually delicious too. The only negative part of our whole experience is that parts of the fondant dried a little before serving (that may have been our fault from how we stored it though) so it cracked in a few spots but it wasn't significant and is the only negative thing I can think of at all. I was so impressed with how intricate the details were and how similar the cake looked to the example we gave. We may have to drive the 2 hours from home to come here for our one year anniversary to have some more cake! read more

Very cute, clean, with a nice array of baked good: croissants, scones, pies, cupcakes and - what I got - a french silk cup (very good). Also sweet breads (apple, zucchini etc). The kolaches are terrific. The kolaches and apple bread appealed to my non-sweet toothed husband. Nice produce and nursery next door with large pots, pumpkins, and garden decor, some gardening supplies. I will be going back! read more
