The issue is that very few people actually take the time to write about their experiences living in a community, good or bad. (And no, I'm not referring to the reviews where the association committee members pay people to write them, which is quite obvious.) Unethical board members may disregard the rules, make decisions without consulting the community, or simply dismiss homeowner concerns. This is one of the most significant issues in this building. Apartments are close together, resulting in frequent noise complaints. We've encountered issues with neighbors, including excessive partying and disruptive behavior. This isn't limited to festive days; people get carried away and endanger themselves and others. We've had a diverse range of residents, with drugs and alcohol being particularly prevalent. Additionally, some long-time owners rent out apartments to individuals with aggravating police reports simply for their favoritism. Contractors have consistently delayed projects, often taking over six or more months to complete them, even if they're finished at all. They disregard any residents who live there. They work during weekends and after hours, causing excessive noise with drilling and hammering that has worsened over the years. Some of this is due to the building itself, which fails to inform anyone when it's going to make a lot of noise to fix pipes and other issues. They constantly use the service elevator. Elevators are perpetually malfunctioning, with jarring stops between floors and loud doors that give the impression of being on a roller coaster. Even during holidays like St. Patrick's Day, the rules seem to be disregarded, allowing an excessive number of people to fit inside. Laundry on the 20th floor is a major issue. People disregard the common areas and the machines with your clothes inside. They take your belongings, leave their clothes hanging for hours, and even steal valuables. To make matters worse, the machines are frequently broken. Marina City Valet Parking has significantly deteriorated. We pay $280 per month to endure a 30-minute wait to retrieve our car, only to be subjected to another 10-minute wait to exit the chaotic traffic that forms in the combined parking lot of the House of Blues and Marina City whenever there's an event, such as a Marathon, St. Patrick's Day, or any other event. Valet employees expect a tip, or they will retaliate against you. Balconies are a significant problem. They lack a proper drainage system, causing large puddles of dirty water to form after every snowfall and rainstorm. Every balcony requires maintenance every two years, and it's advisable to bring your belongings inside, even if it's not your floor, as maintenance workers may carelessly spread dirt and debris. Residents constantly have a mess on their balconies, despite the beautiful view some apartments have, which is ruined by their mess. The lobby, tiny gym, hallway, and low-level area all have unpleasant odors due to the lack of ventilation and any improvements to the old building. The front doors and garbage shutter also contribute to the foul smell. Security guards can become complacent in their duties, especially when things are quiet, which can lead to a lack of vigilance. Since they frequently use different companies, you never know what you'll get. Sometimes, you'll find very nice guards, but they'll be reassigned to a different location, meaning you'll always have someone different. On occasion, they've been seen watching indecent videos that can be heard from the lobby reception. The package room is an entertainment show. Overall, beautiful view, that it, nothing else can be good add, no amnesties, expensive grocery store, most of the people who owns there for more then 20 years are aggressive, impossible to talk, and they thing the own a castle. If you're considering investing, be prepared to manage all these issues. Good luck to you! However, remember that this is a low-income area with a vibrant nightlife, attracting young people who often use it for parties. read more

Marina is a poor excuse of a historic, "luxury" condo. Laziest staff I've ever encountered at any apartment complex or condo. One too many encounters with them over 3 years of living here. Not only does this speak of marina as a whole, but having a written complaint of the fire alarm going off when yes there was in deed a large fire was the last straw. Talk about a safety hazard. Moreover, on a separate occasion, I came home to a sign saying maintenance was there-with out my knowing. No call or anything. To me this is trespassing and inexcusable that I wasn't made aware. Additionally, I've had them update my phone number for when visitors arrive over 7 times. Not sure what phone they had on file but it certainly wasn't mine. I don't think it's that much to ask to have an update phone number on file. Why this was needing to be said nearly 10 times over is beyond me. Moreover, it took over 2 weeks of me calling multiple times for maintenance to fix my broken storage locker when I had just moved in. Again, as a resident paying at what's supposed to be a high quality condominium, this is unacceptable and poor management. For those looking for a high quality gym-this is not the place. The whole thing needs to be renovated, tiny tiny with a few machines, not open (yes, not) open 24 hours. Again, not sure why. For those on shift work hours this is inconsiderate. Any place I've lived where the rent is as high as it is, had always had the gym open 24 hours. Also whether or not the AC is on is honestly 50/50. What determines this is beyond me. Unfortunately, the only positive thing I have to say about marina is my beautiful view, but whether this pro weighs out the other cons is a different story. Save your money and time. Chicago is a beautiful city, and as someone living here for nearly 15 years, I can tell you-you can get a much more positive experience elsewhere. read more

It's a dream to live in such a distinct landmark. That's all you need for an intro. Really, it's actually a really fun place to live. Now, being a building of condo owners, if you're renting, each pod is different from the last. I'm lucky enough to be in an updated, large open floor plan, while others may have more walls than me. Instead of focusing then on the apartment itself, I'll go over the rest. The other residents for the most part seem very friendly, with plenty of hellos and conversation. The elevators only allow so much being that they are the fastest I've been in apartment wise. Seriously, your ears will pop going to the roof. Which by the way, is open to all residents and has the most amazing, heart of the city view. Both laundry rooms are clean and really updated (less than a year) and the West Tower's work out facility is top notch. Brand new machines and although a small gym smell creeps in, is clean clean clean. The management is extremely attentive and helpful, more so than any place I've seen. The door peeps are equally so, actually welcoming residents home. To top it all off, the location cannot be beat. You'll be living on the Chicago river, that's the heart of the city, 2 blocks from the L. If you need to go anywhere, or someone to you, there's every option available in transportation. Back to the river...go for a place with a view. Not only will it be one of the best residential views in the city, it'll be on one of the biggest balconies available downtown. That's the quick run down, and although low on the lows, there's really not too many. Well, I guess the garbage shoot...it stinks...really bad. Some days more than others, but if that's what I'm complaining about, its only a rare place to visit. Love the place and look forward to my time at Marina City. read more

I first came to Marina City as a renter in 1972, and bought my unit when the residential portion of the complex converted to condos in 1977. Since my job moved to California in 1987 I've alternated between being a part-time Marina resident and an absentee landlord. The building went through some hard times in the Eighties, when the commercial property was in bankruptcy, but it's now in the best physical shape I've seen in decades, and with a great mix of restaurants and services. (I do miss the Chase branch, though.) My experience in recent years with the Condo Association and its hired management company, DK Condo (as in Draper and Kramer), has been almost entirely positive. And of course you can't beat the location for convenience to everything in central Chicago. Views are now a mixed bag, with taller buildings put up in the last 50 years encroaching from several directions; I'm lucky enough to be looking straight down the River, where nobody is ever likely to build a view-killing higher-rise. read more

But when I came back to pick up my car the supervisor said he is agreed his worker has mistaken but it is my mistake as well. and the supervisor told me he is not responsible for his employee and I have to pay the full amount (42$) to get my car. read more

Today is our second to last day in this POS building. I'm writing this at 6:30 AM after just having called "security" about the overwhelming skunk weed smell that has taken over our entire apartment and the hallway. Eyes burning, sore throat - yes, that is exactly how my husband and I want to start EVERY DAMN DAY. I'm writing an update because since my last review, I was basically told by the awful condo association here that they've done everything "to fix our problem," but that we're the only ones to complain (essentially implying that we're making this up). So really what they're saying is that they've done everything they can to fix a problem that doesn't exist. That's the sort of attitude that you get here. Never mind the fact that the "security" guys have told us a ton of people are upset about it. Aside from this, the crazy drilling and hammering has gotten worse. Some of it is the building itself that can't be bothered to let anyone know when they're going to be making a ton of noise to fix pipes, etc. Ugh and the hassle of the valet company you have to use if you want monthly onsite parking. It's gotten worse. I love paying $250 a month to wait 40 minutes to get our car, only to have to wait another 20 minutes to get out of the circus that is the combined house of blues/marina city parking lot every time there's a concert. Which is just about every night. I could go on, but I'll end with the garbage chute which I didn't touch on last time. Whoa. When you open it, the smell that hits you will stay with you for the rest of your life. Yesterday the chute latch was broken (which naturally propped the garbage room door open as well) so the whole hallway smelled with what can only be described as a dual-sensory attack. Those that live here know what I'm talking about. What hits you are the bits of debris that come up with the smell. I sound nuts but it's like little pieces of filthy garbage-infused sand that come up and linger in the air. God is it GROSS. I've seriously had to change my contacts after taking out the garbage because whatever that particle mixture is has latched onto my eye. So if you're looking to get a daily contact high in a dingy, disgusting, outdated building that just so happens to offer Sim City-like views, then this is the place for you. If you believe no view could make up for living in a vertical dump, then look elsewhere. I wish we had. read more

The good: - Fantastic views of the river - Close to the river walk, shopping, public transit - Security staff are very friendly and learn the residents - Small market downstairs with a super friendly staff (a bit pricey, but worth it for the convenience). The bad: - The building's ventilation system is dated and not very functional. Meaning that the chain smoking couple down will make the hallway and your apartment smell like a bar from the 1950s. Not to mention the pot smoking couple next door who's "clam baking" will leak into your closet, bedroom, and bathroom. Just the thing to make you feel clean after you shower. - Don't expect the Association to help. As a renter, you are treated as a third class resident with virtually no help in dealing with any issues you have. In fact, expect them to tell you that you are lying, or crazy, or both. - Do you like to workout? Well you can, in the state of the art fitness facility with equipment that is only slightly newer than the buildings. - Balconies are wonderful, but then we got notice that some of the railings were dangerous..... well we didn't get notice, but the units to either side of us did..... someone trying to tell us something? - The smells. Beyond the cigarettes stink and the reek of skunk pot, you should expect the malodorous trash shoot emanations and funky residents working out in sweats that haven't been cleaned in years. read more

Stayed with a friend last weekend in these condos and +2 stars for the view and balconies. They cannot be beat. - 2 stars for the mail room. The hours on the mail room are RIDICULOUS! We ordered some Amazon packages to be delivered on Friday and ended up not being able to pick them up at all due to the horrible hours! 11AM on a Monday? - 1 star for the state of the building: it's clearly from the 60s, do a little bit of updating. read more

The two towers are both architectual landmarks in our fine town. Some of the apts./condos are huge and of course very expensive. I think there was more fuss made about these buildings in the 60's, but I think they should be seen and visited to be appreciated. read more

I moved into this building when I was 27 years old and nine years later, I'm still here. Hell, I've even purchased a two bedroom condo here, but as great as my new condo is, Marina still has somethings to be desired. PROS: We live on the one of the higher floors, and the views are priceless. I walk across the street to work so if you have a job in the loop, your walk will never be longer than 20 minutes. The management office/rental office people are very nice, helpful and trying their best to update and care for this historical landmark. Most of the staff are friendly and kind. Half the residents are 55 years old, and many of them way older. The staff make it possible for them to keep living here like an assisted living facility. Marina should be the face of Chicago, as the diversity in age, race, culture and even socio-economic levels are all represented here. Because of the cement walls, it's actually sound proof from the neighbors on each side and below, with the exception of the bedroom where the wall doesn't quite fit against the glass window adequately enough so sound can get through. Unfortunately, when renovation is done on some floors above, they don't always take care to install insulation between the cement floors and hardwood/granite newly laid down so you hear every footstep, chair scraping back, thing dropped on the floor and vacuum cleaner running. The management will be nice enough to send a sound engineer to check it out, and then, tell you they can't do anything about it. If you like eavesdropping, the vent in the bathroom is like an intercom to your neighbor, if he/she is near his/hers. CONS: Compared to other new highrise buildings within a mile of here with lots of amenities, Marina Towers has very little and thus, can be overpriced to rent. It's still trading on its historical landmark coolness and location. You will get a bigger one bedroom apartment with huge balconies than most places but pay around the same $1,800.00 for a lot less amenities, like a swimming pool, outdoor grills and patio furniture, remote office, etc. The elderly tenants, who own, can be not so nice to younger tenants who rent. The upper floors from 53 to 60 house the elderly tenants, so you will hear no sex going on up, down or all around. The middle floors are young professionals. The lower floors are where the parties and all things loud enough to get through the walls and floors are happening. There is a newly remodeled laundry room with stack washers and dryers. If you're short, the washers are too high up, and if you're old or have bad knees, the dryers are too low to the ground. There is a new but very tiny fitness room with the standard machines but limited weight equipment (no free weights or bands). The machines are also middle of the road at best. WARNING: Every valet company we have had here sucks! It changes hands a lot, they won't tell you so you send payments to the wrong company for months. Parking is $239/month. Your car will get lots of dings, especially on the passenger side. It can take 45 minutes to get your car. One of the valets slammed the backside of my car into the building crumpling the side panel and leaving cream paint from the building on the grey car. The valet company said it wasn't their fault and would not pay for the damages. The insurance company won't fight with them, so you pay your deductible and call it a day every time the damage your car severely enough to need a new paint/body job. read more

I've lived here now for almost a year, and it was my first downtown apartment after university. For your information I'm 23, no children, living by myself, a designer. I rent an updated studio unit on the 30th floor with a view that overlooks River North. I really, really like living here. Call it bias, maybe I haven't seen much else, but it's one of the best decisions I've made. It took me a day to sign the lease because that's how strongly I felt for this one. My unit has wooden, updated floors, a HUGE private balcony and patio furniture that came with, updated kitchen and bathroom (a space heater in the bathroom included), plenty of storage space, a mailroom and mailman, laundry room, and a gym an elevator ride away. STRONG PROS: - Location. I am not a morning person and do need the convenience of getting up and going straight to work within 10 minutes. It takes 8 minutes for me to walk to work. It takes 10 minutes to walk to my nearest Red Line (Grand) and the same time to walk to the Blue Line (Clark / Lake) to go to the airport. - Amenities. While there's no fancy pool or a 24 hour gym, there is a gym, there's a roof deck where the condo association will host movie nights in the summer, there's a meeting room on the 20th floor, there's a 24hr laundry room, a mail room that sorts all your stuff. Laundry services and valet. And now we have a grocery store! - The balcony. I have been so spoiled with this balcony I cannot imagine ever living without one. - Management is kind! I've always had a good experience with the doormen/women, the condo association folks, the mailman, AJ. - Diversity. Marina has a little bit of everything -- old and young, white, black, hispanic, east asian, south asian, condo owners who are older and richer, renters who are younger and less well-off. - Thick walls. The entire building is cement, so you can't hear anyone aside from an occasional high-heel-wearer from the floor above you. CONS: - The garbage chute is disgusting. I try to avoid it at all costs, especially in the winter, because you'll open it to throw something out and gross air will shoot up hitting your face. I'm underplaying this; it's truly unpleasant. - It would be nice if the gym were open 24 hours. - You will encounter some eccentric personalities on your elevator rides, particularly within the older demographic. read more

I've lived here now for almost 2 years, and while I'm ready to move on to a more updated apartment there are more pros than cons in this building. As far as the building itself goes it is very cool to live in one of Chicago's architectural landmarks and the view from the roof top is second to none. I often have friends calling me asking to bring their friends and parents over who are visiting just to get an awesome birds-eye view of the city. The security in the building is good, although i do find the hand scanner at the plaza level annoying when my hands are full with groceries or what have you. The security staff are generally friendly, the maintenance is quick to respond (usually within an hour but always that day), and the condo association is very helpful with any questions and problems, even for renters. I also like the discounts Marica City dwellers receive at the surrounding businesses, added perk. The apartment pros are the HUGE balconies!!! In summer it's nice to have a gathering of friends over to grill and everyone can fit outside and enjoy the view. The building also allows tenants to use charcoal grills unlike every other residence in the city which is great for grilling purists but every now and then someone assumes the trash chute leads to an incinerator *which it doesn't) and starts a fire in the garbage. This seems to happen more often in the West Tower than the East though. Decorating the apartment can be an initial challenge as there isn't a 90 degree angle in the whole place being as each unit is shaped like a slice of pie but it is interesting and let's you get a bit creative. As far as cons go, I live in an apartment that hasn't been updated since it was built for the exception of the appliances. This means my electrical bills are through the roof since the a/c and heating unit has never been replaced. You also have to clean the filter by hand, you can't just replace it, which is disgusting. The kitchen is always dark, especially as night since a wall blocks it from the windows and the light fixtures themselves seem to block more light than they should. Some people have remedied this by breaking through the wall and creating a breakfast bar and updating the kitchen entirely (as there is next to no counter space) but since I am a renter, and my landlord hasn't done this, I just have to live with the darkness. However, for the location and price I find this a small inconvenience that I have no problem living with. I can also clearly hear the person living to the right of me as he takes calls and works from home when I'm in my bedroom. When I'm in my living room I can hear the woman upstairs walking around on her hardwood floors in heels and every it night it sounds like she plays a rousing game of bocce ball which is SUPER annoying. All in all though this has been a great place to live, I'm just ready to be in an apartment that is a little more updated. read more

This post is for the mail room!!! The building and amenities are okay.. I have lost three packages in that mail receiving room. They always sign for my package even I insist otherwise, and then they told me that I have too many packages and how does he know if I already got the package and just trying to blame him for being suck at his job. After I insisted, he looked through the package room and gave me a package that he claimed I already took from six months ago. I really have nothing to say about that mail receiving room. Please just hire someone who can at least keep track of the packages and be nice to your tenants. If you are living on online shopping like I do, I am sure there are other buildings in the city that has a responsible staff. read more

This building does look cooler than it lives. Mainly, the ceilings are too low for current standards. But on the plus side, the balconies are way larger than current standards. If you are committed to modernism, you can almost certainly get around the ceiling height. read more

Like polar bears, the towers are best appreciated from a distance. I've lived in the West Tower for more than four years simply because I'm too lazy to move. There are no "huge" condos, unless you count the units that some owners have combined - but those are few and rarely on the market. My unit, which I rent, still has the original 40-year-old everything - kitchen, bathroom, even the floors. Most units are in need of renovation. The entire complex's electrical, water, phone, and cable systems are old and flakey. The current condo board likes to keep the place cheap so there's a huge turnover in rentals - because the condo board is controlled by real estate agents who make a commission on each rental they sign. There's also a lot of bickering going on these days, with no one able to agree on what needs to be done to bring the building up to current standards while remaining true to the architects original intent. My advice is to avoid buying here for at least the next five years. read more

I LOVE LIVING HERE. This building is amazing and right in the center of everything. There are 1000 great restaurants right in the area, as well as the convenience of a fairly-priced grocery store and cleaners INSIDE the building. The apartments are all different, but my studio on the 23 floor has been renovated and is perfect for one person. In regard to balconies, you really can't get much better than this. The balconies are HUGE and most of them have great river or city views. The rooftop is perfect for laying out on in the summer because you're practically IN the sun, and although there is no pool, its windy enough up there that you aren't overheating. I would reccomend living here to anyone. The only downfall of this building is that its expensive (if you're in a renovated apartment) and that the entrance to the west tower always seems to smell like sewage. Other than that, no complaints! read more

Agreeably, this place really is as fantastic as it sounds and is deserving of 5 stars. Although I would love to give them the 5, I have reached my boiling point with a certain part of high-rise/condominium living which I find crucial enough to Yelp about. Marina Towers has 1 package room in it's West tower that accommodates all residents. This includes all mail too big to fit in the tiny mailbox and all packages from anywhere else. I have had several issues with the same gentleman signing for my packages and me never receiving them, receiving them weeks later, and wasting tons of my time. I have spent hours cumulatively calling on companies I have placed orders with and orders I have paid the premium on to have shipped sooner. Typically, your package has been in the package room for 2-3 days before you are notified it's there. I understand there are days when there might be more coming in than others, but when the guy who fills in for the usual attendant can get the job done as it should be, you wonder why the Association doesn't put it's foot down amongst all the complaints it receives. The response you will get from the attendant: "They mis-delivered it and just signed my name because they know I work here." I doubt that flies with the older residents (who make up the majority of the population in the Towers) who routinely receive medication and other supplies through the mail. Chicago mail is unreliable enough already, this is unacceptable. read more

Be sure to hold your nose as you exit the elevator to the apartments as the poignant smell embeds the antiquated building. The lower level common area is generic and utilitarian, the kinda of place that gives relief when you exit to the outsite. The management, although polite, their polices are grossly aggressive. Certainly ideals such as common decency are lost here. read more

They lost my key in the office, so I had to pay a locksmith $165 to get back in. When I asked if I could be refunded that money, they said the key thing (keeping them in the office) was a "courtesy" and that they wouldn't reimburse. I know they had a key as I'd given them one; and on at least one occasion, I'd been let in, so I know they had the key then. I do like living here. It's a great place. But having to eat $165 because they lost my key sorta steams my clams. read more

Moving in or out of Marina Towers is fairly miserable. I'm posting this review to save people some grief. It is a mess in the Marina level area of Marina City so it's a must for you to go down and see for yourself how to drive the truck in, where to park it(no designated place) and how far it is to move your stuff. Neither condo management or Alto realty took me downstairs and showed me where to park the truck or other tips. Plan on being interrupted at least twice for workmen to use the elevator. They are rude and think they should have priority over your move. If you want to be nice then empty the elevator load into the hallway so they can move their tools and materials. It's a 50 year old building and seems to have work going on all day. They could at least limit work around month end when people are moving in and out. You will probably have to move the truck a couple of times to let other trucks get by. They have hotel cart available but you have to know to ask for it and also leave an ID. They could have it ready and provide more carts. Be aware of the clearance height downstairs. I hired 2 Men and a Truck and they brought this massive truck for 4 bedroom house and it didn't fit under the clearance so they had to park far away and lug my stuff farther which cost me more money because it took longer. read more
