I rarely write bad review when I am unhappy with a service, as long as attempts to make amends are made. However, I chose to write this due to Carlos' complete and total lack of compassion or willingness to apologize for how devastated I am. First off, it is clear that Carlos is good at cutting curly hair, but he is TERRIBLE at listening to or taking feedback from his customers. If you don't know what you want, or you don't already know how to deal with your curls Carlos might be the guy for you. But if you have something specific in mind I suggest going to someone who will care to make sure you are happy (and spend more than ten seconds looking at the pictures you bring). I specifically asked him to look at previous pictures of my hair, and examples of what I wanted, so that I could get back to the shape I had earlier before an unfortunate haircut in January (was totally doable, and very simple). Rather than taking the time to look, he glanced at the picture and told me to 'move on from my old hair' and work with what we have, and dismissd the pictures of the '90210' girl (his words, not mine) that I was showing him as an example of SHAPE not STYLE. He seems more interested in telling you what you're doing "wrong" and teaching you how to style your hair the "right" way, than actually delivering the shape you ask for. He styled me with clips, which i would never do, as i really dislike that look and left me under the dryer. When I left i couldn't see the shape due to the massive amounts of gel and the weird height at the roots. I came back a couple hours later after it "settled" and it was clear that I did not get what I asked for. I asked for a nice, subtle angle and I ended up with square top and a rattail hanging in the back, sadly all that is left of my length. Once hair is cut there's no going back, but a simple "I'm sorry" is more than sufficient to make amends when a customer is in tears, there's absolutely no need for rudeness or egoism. He offered to cut more to achieve the shape I asked for, which is the last thing in the world I need to grow my hair out. He then became angry (took a moment to take deep breaths to calm himself) as I fought back tears of anger and humiliation. I wish I was not so naive to believe that paying 140 dollars for a haircut would mean that my stylist would care more about my feelings than his ego, in fact it was the opposite. Really sad and disappointed, mostly about the rude reaction to my tears. I'm sure once I get over it I'll be more upset about the haircut that will be with me for a good long while. For reference: I have been a curly girl since 2011, have gotten some great curly haircuts (and some really bad ones) so I'm definitely not a newbie to the dry cut game. Mario Diab was started and staffed by several ex-Devechan people a couple of years ago. While this place doesn't concentrate on only curly hair like Devechan, it does specialize in it. The salon itself is very nice, but small and located in a basement. All sense of time is lost when surrounded by all white walls and floors with no windows. This review is really about Carlos. Carlos, one of the Devechan defectors, has been cutting my hair for 6 years. He's always been able to tame my extremely curly hair, but I think he's been getting lazy for the last a couple of years. He used to spend 45 min to 1 hr meticulously cutting my long mane of curls. Now he spends 20 min, at most. And, yet, I'm always there for over 2 hours.... This is because they leave me under the hot dryer (with metal clips in my hair, scalding my scalp, natch). My cuts aren't bad, just blah. You know how when you get a hair cut, you have to go out, no matter how tired you are, to show it off? Well now I can't wait to wash my hair to get all product out. I don't know, maybe my expectations are too high, but for $130 + tip, I expect more. read more

I too went to Carlos and I feel that I must defend him. While, at the time I did feel like he cut my hair a little on the short side, he did exactly what I wanted. He gave me a cut that would grow out nicely and that is exactly what it did. I have had shitty curly cuts for the past decade because no one can cut curly hair well enough so that it can grow without looking like a christmas tree. I love Mario Diab Salon and its entire staff! Professional, attentive, and overall great at what they do. This review is specifically for Matthew. As an African-American woman with thick, course hair, I knew it would be a challenge to find someone who understood my hair needs in Manhattan. Luckily, a friend referred Matthew and here I am, a year later, with the healthiest and strongest hair I've ever had. I wanted to grow out my relaxer in hopes to go natural and Matthew has made this my easiest transition, ever (believe me, I've attempted this twice before). Not only do I appreciate someone who knows what they're doing with my hair, I also appreciate someone who values my time. Matthew gives me a one-on-one experience (sans the client juggling act like in some salons) and gets me in and out in no time. I came here after a train wreck of an experience with a full weave at Harold Melvin's Salon in the UWS. The weave was a horrible sew-in piled on the top of my head, and on top of that, the stylist could not cut any better than a preschooler. I stopped her right at the beginning when she started to hack away and told her that I would get it cut somewhere else. I called Mario Diab's the next morning and was soooo pleased that I could get in that afternoon for a cut and style (the weave restructure would have to wait, but at least I could get a good cut in the meantime). I was instantly amazed by the creative decor and atmosphere. The antique style light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and the rustic wood accents were very visually appealing. The receptionist was very warm and professional. I was immediately escorted to the chair, given a robe and offered a drink. Shortly after, I met Matthew - a tall black male who is very easy on the eyes I might add. I told him my hair horror story and he tried his best to look positive and optimistic, but I told him to give it to me completely and unabashedly straight. He said what I feared, that the previous stylist did a horrible job and while usually he can work with just about anything, he would simply try his best. Le sigh, this I already knew. What he did in the next 30 minutes though was pure magic. He whipped those shears around my mane like a pro and gave me a great style with a combination of the flat iron, blow dryer and round bristle brushes fashioned in my hair like curlers. Although my weave (which I will be getting redone asap) is still piled in the center of my head like a mini bird's nest, I can walk around proud with a great cut. Matthew gave me that confidence. Verrrrryyyyy pricey for my taste btw ($151 for the cut and style), but I was desperate and I do love the cut. I would recommend to anyone that can afford it. I will definitely go back... when I have a salary paying job :) read more

I made an appointment with Jazzee, i used to see her when she was at Hairrules and the service was great. The experience i had at Mario Diab salon was not half as good. Waited almost one hour before getting shampooed, no conditioner was used ( imagine that on african natural hair). Granted my hair was somewhat tangled, but it is easily manageable with conditioner use. The styling was painful and was not as well done as it was at hair rules. and the bill was $141 for a blow dry and a trim. At hair rules, the deep conditioner was included and the total as $95. She wanted to sell me pins when i asked if she could wrap my hair. Too bad since her services were perfect at Hair rules. read more

Completely obsessed with Mario Diab!! I moved here recently from Los Angeles, a land filled with great stylists and colorists on every corner for great prices. Went to Mario Diab for the first time one year ago, based on reviews, location, and price. The interior is nice and cozy, everyone is super nice and welcoming. I've had both Matthew and Elliot color my hair (dark blonde to something with more life aka more blonde) and cut it. Each of the three times I have walked away with amazing color with so much life and body, and a cut/style that looks great and is easy to manage. They're both so nice and friendly and really make the experience all the more fantastic! Obviously this is SoHo in NYC so it's not cheap. For cut, color, style I usually walk away for a shy under $500 including tip. But I've come to realize you won't find much cheaper for the quality in this city. Plus, I have found that their cuts are so great that I don't even need touch up trims in between visits (every 2.5-3 months) so it actually kind of works out. Mariangela rocked my world. definitely a different experience from the japanese hair salons i frequent - usually more concerned with precision, thoroughness, symmetry, and architecural-shaping of the head. she knows how to make a sexy, salty, bronzed, wind-swept cut. that's her thing - sexification. one of the best haircuts i've had (but i usually don't pay over $100 for one). got a deal off bloomspot. may come back here again with another deal but $135 is a jagged little pill when i can crawl back to Hair Kuwayama with some specific Do's and Don'ts and backseat hair-driving instructions. read more

I have been going to Mario Diab Salon for about 2 years now. The place is very chic and the experience is great. Love the cappuccinos while they take care of you. And the massage is wonderful. Carlos is amazing. However, accordingly, he is booked a lot. I took a chance and used Mario because I had heard that he is very good with curly hair too. The first time he did a very good job and I was happy. This last time. Well let's just say that I look like a poodle with a tail and all. I have given it a month hoping that it would grow out a bit. But it's really, really bad. So, I have to go back to Carlos to have him fix it. Even though I had a bad cut with Mario I still love the place... I will just stick with Carlos. Not only will he give you a masterful cut, but he teaches you how to take care of your curls and keep them looking as great as they do after your appt.. He even has his own product line which is the best I've used thus far for curly hair. When ever I get compliments or questions about my hair, I make sure to recommend NYC Curls. I'd also highly recommend seeing Waltaya for eyebrows or makeup. I book an eyebrow appt every time I'm in soho. The ambiance of this salon is perfect: upscale, spotless, and as relaxing as a day spa. Both times that I've gone every staff member has gone out of his/her way to make sure that I'm comfortable - they always offer a beverage and an iPad. I'm a black female with natural hair that I admittedly don't take care of like I should. That being the case I went to Matthew needing a "trim" and ton of moisturize. He gave me a moisturizing treatment and then very diligently wrestled my hair into submission (he definitely earned his tip that day, haha) and I left with a fabulous blow-out (a healthy super-perm-looking blow-out). By the time of my second visit (a month later) my hair was much softer and more manageable and I got an equally beautiful finished product. The only thing that keeps me from going every month is the cost - it's pricey here ($150 first visit - cut and moisturizing treatment; $85 second visit - treatment). As an owner of natural curls, I very rarely leave a salon satisfied. Not so with Mario Diab. I just went in for a simple trim and reshape with Elliot and I honestly have not had a better hair cut. I was worried while watching him because it seemed like he was taking quite a bit off, but he's a magician! My length stayed roughly the same, and he completely reshaped my style, transforming it from a frizzy halo to a clean cascade of curls. He, and the rest of the staff, also have great "chairside manner." Even though the salon has an upscale vibe, I did not feel out of place or judged. As good as it gets! Throwing five stars this salon deserves. I decided to chop off my long straight hair to a super short cut for some self-empowerment (and for a girl who had long hair for YEARS this was not a casual decision), and I am thankful that I picked Mario Diab salon to get it perfectly right! The experience was superb, where everyone in the salon is so down and chill but professional, totally put me at ease. Especially because I never had a go-to salon, I found the nice environment and friendliness in the air really relaxing and putting some confidence in my decision. Speaking of the environment, check out the awesome paintings and book display in the back. They even have an upscale drink cart ;) Apparently the art they get is from an art gallery next door... styled but cozy decor! My stylist Frankie does some serious vidal sassoon class magic. He not only cut my hair short, but SCULPT my hair with utmost care and meticulousness. (Also he knows Asian hair really well, only mentioning this because I had a horror story worthy experience at a salon that didn't understand Asian hair texture at all) I washed my hair after the haircut and to my happiest surprise the styled look was STILL THERE because he literally cut my hair to shape. Amazing experience. Been going there ever since (has been like 7 months by now) every 6 weeks, and at this point I just kinda let Frankie does what he thinks is good. I highly recommend Carlos Flores if you have curly hair. I used to get my hair cut by Lorraine Massey at Devachan years ago. When she left, I tried a couple other stylist there and was never as satisfied. I remembered Carlos way back when he was Lorraine's assistant (many many years ago now) and I'm so happy I found him. He gave me a beautiful cut and the shape has lasted over 6 months now. The salon is very low key and private which I like. My bill was less than the usual at Devachan which I also like! Everyone was very friendly and Carlos has a fun chairside manner. I'm a fan of his NYC Curls Conditioner too. My only complaint was that I was kept under the dryer a little too long but I'll speak up about that next time. Definitely planning to come back. read more

It is hell to find a curly stylist that understands your hair, and while Mario gave me a great haircut (to fix what Carlos had done), unfortunately curly customers are no longer welcome in his chair. As of 2016, Mario is "no longer cutting curly hair" specifically--whether our money isn't as good as straight-haired people's, or Mario only likes straight hair, is unclear. I will not be returning for another unsatisfactory cut with Carlos, and I'd recommend all curly-haired people steer clear. I've never encountered a straight-only stylist before, and I hope never to again. read more

I read about Carlos on NaturallyCurly.com (uh, if you have curly hair and aren't on NCC, get on there now!) and he was absolutely amazing. Because my hair had recently been cut (i.e. butchered) he didn't want to give me a whole new cut, since curly hair grows really slowly in the summertime. Instead he fixed a few problem spots and gave me a mini tutorial on how to care for my hair. He didn't want to charge me at all, but I insisted on getting something done- after all I wanted to pay for his great advice. I was on the hunt for someone who could cut/shape natural curly (type 3c/4a), African-American hair and do it well. After doing some serious online research, I decided to try Carlos at Mario Diab because he got consistently rave reviews on www.naturallycurly.com. I'd been to other salons that specialized in curly hair but was never fully satisfied. After deciding it was time for a change, I went to Carlos. I am SO, SO, SO glad I did. Carlos is the truth! He's a curl expert and is not intimidated by Type 3/4 curls. In fact, he loves working with big hair and it shows! Best of all, he did exactly what I asked for, didn't cut too much but re-shaped my hair so that I no longer looked like a sad dandelion. He also took a LOT of time talking me through my hair routine, and gave me some game-changing tips. He even makes his own line of products for curly hair (called NYC Curls) that's reasonably priced and available through Amazon. He also travels to Europe several times a year to cut his curly clients there, so looks like I'll be making the annual pilgramage to London for yearly cuts once I move abroad this fall. His services aren't cheap (and you have to book a couple of weeks in advance), but considering that I only have to do this once a year and this was the only time I have EVER, EVER walked out of a salon curly actually liking how it was cut, the money was wellllllllll worth it! read more

I am very late for my review, but after seeing both reviews before me, I had to. I went to see Carlos last year on Halloween (that is how I remember it), and Carlos was fabulous! He spent a lot of time with me teaching me that it doesn't need to cost a fortune to do your hair, and gave me tips to style it differently, for work, etc. I enjoyed my cut, and now I know that I don't need that much to make my hair gorgeous. The salon is great, and my oh my the washing experience alone was worth at least $70 (it was pure heaven). I have NEVER spent that much on hair when you can go to a Dominican lady to cut your hair for less than $40, but it was worth it for the education and style alone. I would love to see what they will come up with when it comes to their products. read more

I went to Marco Diab Salon after purchasing a deal on Rue La La. Mariangela was assigned to cut my hair. It was pretty apparent that my past cut was horrible and my hair needed to be corrected. Mariangela not only corrected the past stylist's mistakes but revived it! I am very happy with my hair after going to Marco Diab. Highly recommend! Oh and the dog is so cute! read more

Carlos Flores is a gem! Got set and style for $60. He spent time teaching me about how to care for my curls ( I have been using the Deva method for over 12 years). He actually makes his own hair products, NYC Curls (which can be purchased at the salon and on Amazon) and I was so amazed, I purchased the conditioner and styling gel. I take my 11 year old curly haired daughter to get haircuts by Carlos. Carlos is fantastic! He spends time with her each time teaching her how to take care of her hair on her own and makes her laugh throughout the two hours she's at the salon. It's incredible that although she pays such a reduced price, the time, care and service she receives is never diminished or cut short. She feels like a star because of Carlos. I made an appointment for my mom here on her visit Into the city. She has very very full coarse hair and has never had it shaped or cut but professionals with specific focus on curly hair. I thought this place would be fantastic, but I must say We were not too pleased. The place was lovely and everyone was friendly. But the person who cut her hair didn't seem to have much experience with curly hair. He charged double what my mom was used to paying (which granted was still not terribly expensive for nyc standards-- about 90$) but snipped off maybe a quarter of an inch not even all over. She specifically asked to have it really completely reshaped and thinned down, and when we both looked down and realized there was maybe a teaspoon amount of hair on the ground, we spoke up and asked for more of a cut. He told us he would after he washed it. But didn't really take any more off afterwards. She also asked for bangs and he said no because her hair was too full. Which wasn't true. When she left she just brushed it over and basically did it herself and it looked great. Not sure why he refused. All in all we were disappointed in out experience here so if you're still willing to take a chance I suggest making sure you have one of the expert stylists and maybe they'll provide a better experience. read more

He is the first stylist I've met who can handle it both with confidence and the way that I ask for it. I also love the salon itself.
