Extremely Disappointing Experience - Ignored and Forgotten My son and I visited Mario's Deli today, May 17, 2025, around 12:45 PM, and it was hands down the worst deli experience I've ever had. We walked in and were completely ignored by the staff for a full 15 minutes. It wasn't until another customer came in and looked ready to order that I had to speak up and point out that we hadn't been served. I placed a simple order for two sandwiches: one plain turkey sandwich and one half pastrami with American cheese and mustard. After another 15 minutes passed, during which at least four other customers who came in after us received their orders, our sandwiches were still nowhere in sight. When I inquired, the staff claimed they "might've fell somewhere" and they couldn't find our order ticket. By this point, my son had been waiting patiently for 45 minutes just to get a simple sandwich. I had to specifically ask them to please, quickly make my son's sandwich as he was very hungry. I always try to be understanding and avoid confrontation, but this level of disregard and inefficiency is unacceptable. Waiting 45 minutes for two basic sandwiches, being ignored, and then told our order was lost is beyond frustrating. This experience has unfortunately pushed me to share this negative review. I have patronized this deli for years. There's a new person doing the cooking on the grill, I guess, I stopped in this week and ordered a Taylor Ham and cheese on a hard roll, and specified the Taylor Ham to be well done, very crispy. The kid taking the order seemed to have a hard time writing it down. I got the sandwich, looked at it in the car and found it wasn't well done at all, so I took it back and asked them to remake it, which they did, and it was fine this time. I don't know why it's so hard for people to cook Taylor Ham well done, It's not rocket science or brain surgery. I used to have the same problem at Place By The Tracks deli in Vernon. They got it right maybe 50% of the time. Of course, they went out of business, which didn't surprise me. I think people today simply don't do a very good job of listening. read more

I live next door to Mario's and frequently eat the experienced kitchen help carefully separated using top fresh food and have experience twenty four years in the same business selling pure and top choice food available. Quality Looking to grab some breakfast on the go, we stopped into Mario's Deli. Unfortunately our original plan to get bagels was quickly derailed, since they had already run out of bagels. Honestly, I was surprised since we were there at 10:00, which seemed too early to be out, but we decided to continue with our order anyway. I went with a Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich on a Round Roll. It was a solid sandwich, with a good ratio of cheese, meat, egg, and bun. The roll was very fresh and I thought the sausage patty was delicious. I also ordered a cup of Coffee, which was perfectly fine. Overall, a good experience. Quantity The Breakfast Sandwich was larger than I expected. It also was very fair in terms of the meat and cheese thrown on. Value My Breakfast Sandwich with Sausage, Egg, and Cheese came to $4.50, which was very reasonable. Just make sure to have cash on hand. Ambiance Mario's Deli is located in northern New Jersey, close to the border with New York. It sits in a small strip mall near a busy intersection. The space is very long with a seating area near the front, a long counter along the left wall, and then some fridges towards the back. Above the seating area in the front they had a television that was showing the news while Christmas music played in the background. A simple space, primarily made for to-go orders. Crowd When we arrived around 10am there were about a half dozen people in line. By that time they had already run out of bagels. I don't know if there is a mad rush on Sunday morning, or if it was just a strange day because of the upcoming holiday, but almost every guest inquired about the bagels and was disappointed by the answer. Service The staff was friendly enough, but you could tell they were a little annoyed by the questions about the bagels. The food came out quickly and the coffee station and tables were all kept spotless. Parking They have a small private parking lot directly in front of the store. Extra Mario's Deli served up a solid breakfast sandwich, and looked like they would also be reliable for other deli sandwiches as well. However, I can't help but be disappointed that their bagels didn't even last until 10:00. I go to Mario's Deli to get fat and get a real taste of extremely good and nourishing bread, meats and cheeses. Mornings and lunchtime are the busiest but it says a lot about the taste of Mario's skilled cooking and authentic components. His bread is crusty and tastes like home-baked, the breakfast sandwich is great concoction and will definitely hold you until lunchtime. After she placed her order the owner rang her up and said, in front of other customers, that she is "a real pain in the ass." I've gone here for bagels, and on that front, they're pretty good. Call in your order if you don't want to wait, as they can get quite busy. The reason for my lower review was I went in yesterday looking for a catering menu for a quite large party (150+) that I'm planning. The first young girl, annoyed in general I wasn't simply ordering a sandwich, threw her hands in the air and said "we don't have anymore" and then turned her back to me. An older (early 40s) woman was much more helpful, and eventually the owner got an old menu out of the back, but quite rudely said "prices have probably changed". I get it. They get busy. But there's better ways to handle clients that take the same amount of time. Take my number and offer to call me directly when you're not so busy to talk about catering. Always friendly service. Always great food. Generous portions. Reasonable prices. My boyfriend took a breakfast sandwich to his school in Mahwah, everyone saw it and wanted one. The guys in his class started paying him to bring them sandwiches. There's plenty of deli's between West Milford and Mahwah. The quality is top notch. The BEST deli in town ! We go probably once or twice a week, Mario and the girls make you feel like family. Some of my favorites include the eggplant wrap, Britney's best and the Italian delight. Rude staff. Burnt food Didn't get what I ordered Door open ceiling fans on in 47 degree rainy weather I ordered a chicken cutlet sandwich with cheese lettuce tomato and light mayo. I watched the girl write it down. When I saw the other girl making the sandwich and putting too much mayo I asked her politely to go easy on the mayo and she threw the spoon back in the mayo thing. This girl was not a happy camper and was rude to the other girls. What I got was a burnt chicken cutlet no lettuce no tomato. This was not a good experience. We were going to eat in the deli but the staff had the door propped open with all the ceiling fans on. It was cold and depressing. It's 48 degrees and raining. It's like they didn't want anyone to stay cause they wanted to go home. And by the way there was not one person sitting down to eat. Not a good experience overall. I won't be going back. Mario's Deli. What a find! I wandered in here one day when the other local deli screwed up my breakfast sandwich for the umpteenth time. So, I thought let me try out Mario's. I walked in and had one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. I have been a loyal customer ever since. I would not shop anywhere else for me breakfast or lunch sandwich needs in West Milford! This is the best place in town for Bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and heroes. Mario's is a family business. Mario is on site every day making sure everything is perfect. Mario, his wife or his son are usually working the grill. His ingredients are always fresh, and he uses boar's head products, which I prefer to Thumans. You can get breakfast sandwiches anytime of day. And the breakfast sandwiches are LOADED with bacon and eggs. I may be wrong on this, but I think he uses three eggs on each sandwich and more bacon than should reasonably be on a sandwich (and I mean that in a great way, because let's be honest, there's no such thing as TOO MUCH BACON!!!). And the sandwiches are huge and are a great value. Breakfast or lunch, the sandwiches are loaded. One hero is usually enough for my wife and I for lunch. And I eat a lot. The only drawback is that they are so great, that it can get busy in there during the weekend breakfast and lunch rush. So I would advise placing your order by phone so you don't have to wait out the rush. The customer service is great and Mario knows every customer by name.
