I love to support privately owned small businesses in my community and this one is no exception. I stopped to get a sandwich yesterday on my way home. Black forest ham, Swiss cheese on rye with German mustard. 2 slices of ham, 1 slice of Swiss and no mustard. I go to a deli with the expectation that I will get what I am paying for. Not so here. Most disappointed. Don't think I will return even though they carry foods direct from Germany. Oh and on that note, while there, I priced the stolen - $18.00 and it was a commonplace mass produced stolen. Much too expensive and too little in return for my taste buds. read more

Although I would probably go back for the hard roll alone, not impressive. The roll was one you just don't find anymore so I fully appreciated that. But two turkey and swiss with about 2 pieces of turkey on each? $15.00 eh. Also when my husband was there he said that someone was turned away that asked for a taylor ham and cheese because they don't serve that after 11.. I have come here for quite a while now, I would love to be here more often, but it's a little far from my home. This is a phenomenal delicatessen, which boasts some of the finest quality offerings. This establishment......is stuck in the......70s? And that's how I like it. Charming wood paneling. German grocery section - grab some great chocolate at Christmas time. Also there is herring. I'm a big herring guy so it's nice to buy something home made every once and again. The standout is the sandwich. Freikadellan, Sausage and peppers. You name it, the special is what I order. This German deli has a feel of authenticity with it's country quaintness and mom & pop staff you can't help but feel at home. The gregarious husband/wife team have been at this location for ever and offer up German specialties and American favorites to go or you can eat in the small seating area housing several booths near the large front windows. Breakfast and lunch are the the mainstays here with a hot cup of coffee a delightful German sausage (or try Black Forest ham) & egg sandwich for breakfast or for lunch the ever popular and wonderfully seasoned Frikadellen, authentic German meat patties with melted Münster cheese on a roll and some potato salad. The fresh pork with gravy is also out of this world good with a side of spaetzel. They are many imported pantry items for sale here amongst the gnomes, porcelain beer steins and cuckoo clocks with the owners often speaking German or English in thick accents you may feel like your in a Bavarian Village in the Ramapo Mountains of New Jersey. Probably the only real deal authentic German/Austrian place you're going to find anywhere in the area for thirty miles. They offer a wide selection of German food, treats, and trinkets. Very cool little store. Definitely recommended for those looking for some old school German breakfast or lunches. Authentic German deliciousness. Besides having tasty lunch specials of Brats, wursts, and Fricadellen (like a German meatloaf) they also have an array of freshly made slaws, salads, and baked goods. The store is like a fantastical little alpine adventure. Little gnomes are hanging all over and the shelves are packed with more chocolate, hazelnut creme-filled cookies, and canned fishes than I've ever seen in one place. They are eat in or take out - very small seating section - I usually take out. One morning I got there early enough to order their signature breakfast sandwich - Bratwurst, egg, cheese and mustard on Rye toast - on point. Definitely worth a drive. read more

My wife and I ate at the Alpine Deli this weekend and had bratwurst and bockwurst sausage, with a side of sauerkraut and mustard. Our meals also came with potato salad. It was simple and delicious, and just the right size portions. I'd like to address the Yelp reviews that express disappointment with the portion size and the service. When I stepped into the Deli I felt transported to Germany. The quaint restaurant has a few comfortable booths, and the rest is open with a German cold cuts deli and various German food products on shelves throughout the store. We found our hosts to be very friendly, and happy to discuss their home country and the food they serve. To those that feel the portions are too small, it may be that you assumed that most countries serve the portions we are used to in America. In Germany and other European countries, there is an emphasis on avoiding food waste. Therefore the amount served is smaller. When my grandmother visited this country she was shocked and concerned by the large amount of food provided when she went out to eat. Like her, as Americans we need to be more understanding and open when we step into someone else's culture. In response to the comments about the owners of the Deli, I would say you have to give people a chance and get to know them. While I can't speak to your specific experience, I've found that in other parts of the world, people may be less outwardly expressive at first. However, someone who is more reserved in the beginning may turn out to be more sincerely friendly and engaged. Either way, come back and engage the owners in a conversation. You may be surprised at the result. Irrespective of the concerns brought up above, I can't recommend the Alpine Deli enough. If you want authentic German food at a reasonable price, this is the place! read more

I like the breakfast sandwiches and I am always interested in their wide array of German specialty goods, whether they're behind the deli counter or on the shelves. I tried curry ketchup for the first time when I went to Germany and the only place I've seen it since in America is at Alpine. I will always support this mom & pop spot. read more

Went to lunch here after a beautiful hike around the Reservoir. Very disappointed in the service with an attitude. I ordered a sandwich with lettuce and tomato, and it came out with very little cheese, and just a bit of lettuce on the side, and on small pieces of bread like you'd buy at Shoprite. I asked for more lettuce and the tomato which she left off, but was told tomatoes are extra, and the owner was grumbling with the staff about putting too much on the sandwich. Suggest driving a mile south to the Lakeside Diner where the new owners have transformed the place, the food is excellent, and the service with a smile. Ask for the waitress with red hair. read more

Aside from sandwiches made from real food, the Teutonic specialties are straight from the Fatherland. Only issue is the lack of a friendly smile from the woman (not the owner) who works there. Most of the time she is rude. If you can get past that, then this is the place for reasonably priced, genuine home cooked food. read more
