If I could, I'd review the pretzels this place makes and only the pretzels, and I'd give them 10 stars. Pretzels are so often boring and dry, but the Mariposa Pretzels RULE! Best I've had in a long, long time. As for the rest of the place... I can only comment on the BLT I had and the service. The BLT is pretty underwhelming. Okay so you use turkey bacon... but the aioli is flavorless, the tomatoes were scant, and while mesculin greens are a great idea, if you're bacon's not gonna be crisp, at least have something crispy on the lettuce front. BLT's are so easy to make that a bad BLT inexcusable... especially if you're charging 8 bucks for it. Then there's the service. SLOW. Look people, i know you're cool. I know you like obscure indie bands because your shirts tell me so. I know you've travelled to some obscure nation once because you're wearing an ugly necklace hand-made there. But settle that with your friends AFTER you finish making my sandwich. I watched as it took the guy making my sandwich 5 minutes just to wrap it up in 2 (why the extra?) layers of paper because he was in the middle of an important convo with a co-non-worker. And thats another beef... when the employees outnumber the customers, and shit STILL takes a long time... you suck. Get a job as a tree somewhere, will ya? read more

Oh mariposa, how you have fallen. I really used to love this place and have been coming here for years, but today was the last offense. Over the years I have seen the size and quality of everything shrink and the prices grow and grow... and grow. This morning I was lucky enough to get breakfast (many times I see that there is more than 1 person in line and just walk out... I don't have 20 min to get a scone). I got a bagel and cream cheese. Final price $3.50. When I looked in the bag and saw the tiny container half full of cream cheese I asked for more, and was told I would have to pay extra. It was literally not even enough to cover my bagel with a thin layer. Previous disappointments include fruit flies inside my fruit cup, a razor thin layer of curry chicken salad between my two giant pieces of bread, and the slowest service I have experienced in a place like this. I want to like this place, because I like to support the local bakeries. And I feel bad for it now that Flour has moved in down the block. But they're super stingy! I stopped in to grab some lunch the other day and I decided on the soup. I was in a rush, so I got it to go. When I finally sat down to eat, I saw they had only filled the container half way! It would've cost them next to nothing to just fill up the cup, but because they were so stingy, they've now lost a customer. Ok , so I was clearly in a good mood when I visited - my first visit to the local bakery in my new neighbourhood - but I thought it was pretty nice. Had a decent coffee and a mini ginger cookie, and took about an hour over it whilst I waited for the rain to stop... Nice decor, relaxed atmosphere, and mo sign of the strange staff - obviously I had a lucky day. read more

This place has a really cool vibe. It seems like a nice place to do some work, the atmosphere seemed a bit low key and it has free wifi. I found the wifi to be a bit spotty though. I didn't try their coffee or treats which seems to be what this place is known for. Instead I had a chipotle chicken sandwich that was alright, the chipotle sauce was really good but there wasn't enough of it and I felt like the chicken was a bit dry. I also had one of the black cherry sodas (I forgot the brand); that I would recommend, very tasty soda. read more

I would have given them 2.5 stars if you could. The food is pretty good but it ends there. The place feels dirty; as if they've never washed a table top or the floor, the staff seems indifferent about customers at best, and they don't seem to have any rhyme or reason to how you're served (for instance we got the same things, Waffles, bagels, as the people who came in after us yet they were served first. The worst part has to be how dirty the place feels - it's hard to want to go back for the food when the tables seemed like they hadn't been washed since the day they opened and the staff seemed so indifferent to customers. read more

I would have given Mariposa 1 star but I feel like 1 star reviews are usually not taken seriously. It's a good place to hang out if you have time to kill, but the service is unbearably slow. I went when there was no line and ordered a toasted bagel and it took over 10 mins to prepare. The bagel was overdone, which I could understand if it was busy, but it was literally just me and 3-4 other people in there. The waitstaff is kind but it always feels like they just have no idea what's going on. Unless you plan on posting up for a long period of time, I'd recommend literally any other place in Central for your bakery/coffee needs. read more

My husband and I are visiting the Boston area and happened upon Mariposa. We decided to stop for a cup of coffee and a late morning breakfast. Overall the restaurant felt dirty and the food and service was mediocre at best. It took 5-7 minutes to get our coffee and another 10 to get our breakfast. My husband's breakfast was fine...mine was not. My egg sandwich only had egg on half of it and the bread was burned on the edges. We would not go back to this restaurant again. read more

i can't give it zero stars so one it is. i've seen the espresso area looking really dirty and i think i saw them resteam milk for drinks on more than one occasion. the baked goods sound great in theory but are poorly executed. the strawberry oat scones, for example, have maybe at best ONE strawberry for a scone the size of my fist. i understand that you have to keep the business in the black but seriously, cutting corners isn't the way to do it. furthermore, the counter staff at mariposa is probably the unhappiest and surliest bunch i have ever encounted. read more

The sandwiches here are really interesting, as you get to choose the type of bread you want. The best ones are Italian Chicken, Chipotle Chicken and Egg Sandwich. Their baked goods are really tasty, with my favorite being the Pistachio n Cherry Biscoti! read more

Disgusting. I waited 15 minutes for my sandwich to be made, despite being the only person waiting. Reason for the delay: the sandwich-maker took a bathroom break, appeared not to have washed his hands in the bathroom, and instead rinsed his hands in the kitchen sink WITHOUT SOAP, and preceded to make my sandwich without wearing gloves. Nice coffee shop! Their tea latte (autumn harvest) is delicious (and unsweetened!) and so are their cakes. Moreover they have fresh squeezed orange juice. Great coffee, good food, good layout. The music here is always comically lame and unpleasant and holds the place back from having the best atmosphere of the central square coffee shops. I don't want to linger in a place where Three Doors Down is playing at 7:30 in the morning (or anytime). Start playing decent background music or at least contemporary music, for the sake of your otherwise nice atmosphere. read more

Love their baked goods, especially the chocolate chip scone. Unfortunately they seem to run out of white bread often on the weekends, but when they do have them it tastes quite good and freshly baked. French toast and sandwich are just "ok." The arugula salad was very fresh and crispy, and piled high on the plate! When it's busy service can be notably slow - I feel like there's a new staff every time I go there (fairly often). I had been wanting to go to Mariposa for some time. It seems a little out of the core of Central Square, pleasant not fancy décor, I liked the name, and I always like restaurants with "bakery" in their names. A friend and I lunch together periodically in Central Square and decided finally to try Mariposa. Well, I was rather disappointed. It was a week day lunch time, but the place was not busy. The service was fine, nothing spectacular. Not especially congenial, but quite efficient. I ordered a veggie burger and a lemonade drink. The burger was definitely homemade, no hockey puck here, and would have tasted great if the temperature had been right. The burger was not hot, not warm, somewhere between warm and cold, maybe cool. Then, as my friend and I were walking down the street afterward, I realized that I had never gotten the drink I ordered. Yes, I know I have some responsibility for making sure I get what I order and pay for. However, as a general matter, once I have placed and paid for my order, I believe the primary burden is on the restaurant to get it to me. read more
