I'll start by saying that we were looking for a bakery with pastries, but this was the second "bakery" that we visited that I would classify as a cafe. We decided to stay because the food looked pretty good. Lady who took our order was not only unfriendly, but also seemed annoyed with our presence. Ordered 2 sandwiches and a large lemonade. By the time the sandwiches came out, we still didn't get the lemonade, so I asked about it. The lady at the counter did go and get a lemonade, but it was definitely not the 16 oz one that we paid for. Both of the sandwiches came without the listed sauces and were pretty bland. This is a cute, convenient local bakery/cafe in Central. It has a chill and creative ambiance, and is a good place to sit down and do some work in off-peak hours. I am really glad it is there, and recommend patronage. I also recommend giving them friendly, constructive feedback on their service and quality assurance, as it does have its ups and downs and as a fan of the establishment, I want them to be the best they can be. The good: Excellent baked goods & coffee, poached eggs, breakfast items (except the lox sandwich, which is a bit minimal), avocado & hummus sandwiches, veggie burger, relaxed atmosphere to sit down for a while or catch up with a friend. So-so: Some lunch items are awesome and some are so-so, salads are a bit minimal, and when you leave your clothes may have absorbed a smell of food from the unventilated air. Hit or miss: Made-to-order service. You may be greeted with smile or with indifference; sometimes your order from the menu (vs baked goods) will come out in 5 minutes and sometimes 20 minutes; sometimes what you get won't be what you ordered. The last time I ordered something to go, the order was totally botched (no egg in the egg sandwich!), I called and left a complaint. The owner was very responsive and nice, called me back, offered me a free meal replacement next time I was, and let me know she had talked to employees and figured out what had happened. Went in for breakfast this morning. There were maybe 3 people in line ahead of me. Fine. The girl at the register took my order and was very pleasant. I asked for a glass of orange juice and she said they were in the process of making it and they only had a half glass currently available since it was getting busy. Okay. I asked if they could make me one and I would wait. 10 minutes go by and my breakfast sandwich comes out. 15 minutes goes by and still no sign of any orange juice. So I asked if I had one coming and she said, "we are still in the process of making it." No apology or anything. So I waited. In the meantime, I watch as they are designing signs and no one is at the juicer in plain sight. There was also NO ONE in line. As someone who has worked in the food industry for many years at both local and chain shops, it seems to me that you would have things ready BEFORE the store opens aka time management. Bakeries and shops do this ALL the time. They HAVE to or nothing would be available for purchase. This was not the case. I get that it's a small local shop with a flair for made from scratch specialties, but a little sense of urgency would be nice. Finally, she brought the juice over and she motioned for me over to the register to say we still have to charge you for it. Still no, "sorry for keeping you waiting." If I were in her shoes, I would have apologized profusely for the inconvenience and given the customer the orange juice for free or some sort of voucher. Needless to say, I was not happy and apparently the $12 was JUST for the sandwich. I felt bad storming off and being THAT person, but management needs to train the employees in customer service, not just food prep. Not a good way to start the day. In short: Shockingly bad service, good food, okay coffee I've been back to this place several times, trying to give them a fair chance, but I think it's time to stop going there until they fix the service. The food here is pretty decent, which is why I have returned a few times. The breakfast sandwich with eggs, tomato, and avocado on a bagel is delicious, and so are the pastries I've tried. The lunch sandwiches aren't bad, but all of them seem to need a little more salt, even for someone who hardly salts any food. The sandwich bread has a great taste and texture. I also really like that all the food from the bakery seems to be very fresh. The coffee drinks have been great about 50% of the time, but I've received a latte that was made with spoiled milk, and also burnt espresso on another occasion. I may have slight preference for the coffee at 1369 or the Clear Conscience Cafe, but this is pretty good when they get it right. The service is absolutely atrocious. I've been there on quiet mornings where only one or two other people are there, and it still takes at least 20 minutes to get my sandwich. When the cafe is busy, forget about it. I've tried calling in my order ahead of time, and still had to wait forever after getting there 15 min. later. You can imagine my disappointment when I found out they messed up the order (ordered two of my favorite breakfast sandwiches, but received one sandwich with sausage, eggs and cheese instead). Mariposa is not a fast-service joint. If they're understaffed or overwhelmed, you can wait a long time for your order (this happens particularly during the lunch rush, which is unfortunate). Also, if you come late in the day they are likely to be out of some things -- for instance, individual salad-ingredients and by God, you cannot get a pretzel roll after 1:30. HOWEVER. Why are they out of stock? Because their salads and pretzel rolls are bloody, bloody good and, also, because they're a modest local business that can't (and shouldn't) compete with the ingredient-reserves of chain stores. I mean, when's the last time they ran out of arugula at Panera. On the other hand, when did you last truly hanker for a Panera salad? Aha. Mariposa is delightful if you have the time to adjust to its slightly erratic, funky rhythm and it's a great place for coffee meetings, work sessions, and family outings because of the generous sizing of the tables and the generous spacing between them. They have good, serviceable highchairs for very young children. You will be disappointed by some of their baked goods -- I had a mediocre slice of tea-cake a few mornings ago, for instance, and they don't seem to be at their best with pastry-experimentation in general. But if you learn their repertoire you will learn what to order, and then you will be addicted to it. (The vegan banana-walnut muffins are fantastic, for instance, as also most of their lunch sandwiches and all of their bagel breakfast-sandwiches.) The coffee is _fine_. Don't expect perfection; be surprised and pleased instead by serendipity, the good humor of the place, and significant intervals of deliciousness. read more

Great place. Best baked goods in Central, all made on site daily. Coffee and tea are high quality. The bagels are the best I've ever had in my (New England) life. Dense, chewy, crusty, complex. Good enough to eat out of hand, without butter, cream cheese, etc. I've lightly sampled the lunch menu, and it's creative and fresh. The space is airy, peaceful, and welcoming. The cherry walnut scone was pretty great, though, so my impression is that they know their baked goods. Man, the service here is TERRIBLE. I mean, really really terrible. I usually don't complain about bad service, but this was really atrocious. Plus for the high-ish prices and the so-so quality of the food, AND the fact that there are a handful of places with coffee and baked goods within a five-minute walk of this one, I don't know why anyone would go here. How do they stay in business? I walked in today with a friend, and there were three or four people standing around behind the counter. No line. Maybe three or four other people sitting at tables. I ordered a cafe au lait, and the guy at the cash register nodded. So I thought I was going to get a cafe au lait, but then he doesn't even ask me for money and instead asks my friend what he wants (maybe he thought I was joking??). Then he takes forever to MAKE the sandwich (he asked my friend what kind of bread he wanted at least twice...), people switch places behind the counter several times, people come in and out of the kitchen area, the cows came home, blah blah blah. How many people are working here? And where's my f-ing coffee??? We stood at the counter for at least 15 minutes. My friend finally gets his sandwich, but then the cashier asks the woman behind me what she wants. After she orders, he notices that I'm still standing there and finally asks me again what I want. Didn't I already say it twenty minutes ago? It wasn't a joke.... Maybe I look like I don't have any money. Maybe I'm so small that I'm completely invisible. I just asked for a regular coffee at this point, because I figured that pouring coffee would take, oh, five seconds? We ordered 2 egg sandwiches and waited 40 MINUTES for our food. They kept losing people's orders and bringing out food that people ordered after us. They also brought us our sandwiches on plates and when we reminded the server that we asked for our food "to-go", he replied "well, that's how your getting your food now". I really wanted to like this coffeeshop, especially since it's so close to my house and frequently much less crowded than nearby Flour. But, after 3 visits, the same issues keep coming up: 1) Slow, slow service. It's slow getting to the counter because the baristas ring up the customers with exactly 0 haste, and then it's slow getting your food or prepared drink, mostly because it doesn't seem like there's ever enough people on staff. I waited 20+ minutes for a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a morning when the place was in no way filled. 2) Relatively snarky/unfriendly cashiers. The first time I visited, I asked for a medium coffee, and when the barista reached for a 12 oz cup, I stopped him and said that I wanted to order a 16 oz coffee, which is the standard "medium" just about anywhere else you go. He smirked at me, reminded me that they aren't Starbucks, and said that if I want 16 oz of coffee, I'll need to order a large. Sorry, sir -- Starbucks may attach stupid names to their sizes (I refuse to say "grande"), but their ounces are on par with everywhere else. 12 oz is a small, 16 oz is a medium. Don't try to make me feel like an idiot for reacting to your store's sizes. This kind of attitude prevailed on future visits as well, in which the cashier seemed annoyed with me that I was at the counter waiting to order while she was busy talking to a friend and another seemed annoyed that I asked if they sell croissants (they don't). 3) Prices are way too high. They sell a PB & banana sandwich for somewhere in the $7.75 range. What?! Every single sandwich on their menu is overpriced. Overall, I'll get my 16 oz medium coffee and 5-minutes-to-prepare egg sandwich somewhere else. The vibe is nice, the food was fine, and the coffee is, if not memorable, certainly not terrible, but I don't need to be treated to crappy service and poor customer service just to pay for an $8 sandwich. read more

More than half the time I stopped by I waited over 15 min for a sandwich and they aren't crowded. Mariposa is one of those places which caters to people sucking up free wifi, rather than actual customers. It's a shame as I work in the neighborhood, but they are off the list. I've been to this place a few times, and agree with most of the other reviews: fantastic baked goods, so-so coffee and sandwiches. The scones are amazing, and they have some unusual items (bagels and pretzels) as well, which are delicious. BUT now on Thursday nights Mariposa is holding a chocolate lounge, partnering with a local chocolate company, Taza. I checked it out two weeks ago. There's a menu of chocolate treats and table service: two types of hot chocolate drinks, fondue, ice cream, and tasting plates of single-origin chocolates. The place was packed at 7:30 and the servers were a bit overwhelmed but friendly. You can also buy hot chocolate mix or solid chocolate to take home. I had the Mexican-style hot chocolate, served in a small cup but it was enough to send me into a chocolate haze. Good times. Except for the lady who is now rarely there and the new young guy with glasses, others are often in a bad mood and impolite.
