    Artisan strawberry ice cream
    David F.

Fine dining in Elk! This place was a real find. Looks a little divey from the outside, but looks are deceiving - inside it has a classy, understated air. All staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, answering menu questions and providing wonderful service. We had the cod and it was magnificent - amongst the best I've had, with a great sauce. For dessert we shared the homemade strawberry ice cream - sounds humdrum but it was tremendous. Obviously not your garden variety ice cream! No need to drive for an hour for high-end food - it's right in Elk.

**vegetarian review** Reservations recommended! This place is along highway 1 so gorgeous backdrop. There are many vegetarian options and pretty much everything was delicious. We sat outside which was a little cold. Good service overall and everything was really delicious- a little pricey but not bad. Recommend.

    Fried fish and falafel

This is a cute local eatery with a very vegetarian friendly menu. We got the Fried Fish and falafel entrees. They really excel at sauces, including the green sauce (Zhoug) and red sauce (harissa) that came with the falafel. The homemade tartar sauce with fresh herbs was also amazing. I really regret forgetting to take pictures of the daily special baked items (chicken mole hand pie and giant chocolate chip cookie), which were the best items we got. The cookie was truly one of the best I've had anywhere, which ample chocolate bits inside, a crispy texture on the rim and chewy texture inside, and just the right amount of sea salt sprinkled on top. We tried to get another hand pie to take with us, but they were all sold out (by 12:30)!

    Oysters - delicious!

The food is amazing! It's our first time in Elk and I am so happy we stopped here. The space was comfortable and nice. The staff were friendly and attentive. They had a great wine selection from local places and beyond. The food was out of the world. We had a few different items from the menu and you can tell how much care and thought were put into each one. Every element of the dish came together to create an amazing meal. Highly recommend.

The fireplace inside was burning and warmed the dining room. I liked that there was no strong smoke smell. Reservations are highly recommended. The space is small, so there will be a wait without a reservation. Reviews were good, but my experience was not the same. I was surprised that the service was stiff and not hospitable. Also the food was just ok. -Soup of the day: fish chowder $8 for a bowl. Shareable for four. Server should have brought out bowls without us asking. -Grilled artichoke: $17. Server refused/did not know how to explain how to eat it -Scallops: $23. Menu should say how many scallops are in one order. Server did offer to ask the chef to include one scallop per person. -Sable fish: $43. Fair - menu warned about bones and there were plenty. Black rice needed seasoning or salt. -Flat iron steak: $50. Prettiest dish. -Pork medallions: $45. Not memorable. Could pass on this. -Rock cod: $43. Smallest portion size of the four. The only thing our server could say about the dessert was, "it's made by a pastry chef". Giving pretentious. Anyway I liked the COCONUT ALMOND CAKE because of the banana ice cream and the toffee sauce. I thought this was a great way to end the meal. It will be the only thing memorable about Trillium Cafe for me. The roasted strawberry tart was the worst. Too much cream and not enough strawberry. I would rather go back to Cafe Beaujolais to see our sweet farmer server again.

The back room is very casual - it was "seat yourself" so get here early if you want to snag a table by the window(s). The food was mixed - started with one of the specials: "Red & Gold Beet Salad" @ $17 - it was beautiful, but the white truffle vinaigrette was flavorless so the salad was bland. Tried another special: "Steak Diane" @ $40 - ordered medium-rare and it was way undercooked. Couldn't bring myself to eat it. The Grilled Rib Eye was good - was also on the rare side but husband doesn't mind. It was a treat to have some live music (Kendall Dean) - she was super. Servers were friendly. Was nice, but wasn't impressed with the room, and just bummed the meat wasn't cooked to order.

From the very beginning of the meal, there was a clear sense of precision, elegance, and intention. The opening presentation was stunning, filled with an assortment of beautifully composed small bites featuring oyster, mushroom, sea bream, and a variety of other seasonal ingredients. Each bite felt delicate yet purposeful, showcasing both technical refinement and remarkable balance. One of the most memorable dishes of the evening was the bluefin tuna moriawase paired with strawberries. Normally, fruit in savory dishes tends to feel distracting or overly sweet to me, but the execution here was exceptional. The chefs managed to create a harmony between sweetness, tartness, acidity, and umami that elevated the tuna rather than overshadowing it. It was a dish that felt thoughtful, restrained, and incredibly well composed. The consistency throughout the progression of the menu was equally impressive. Course after course arrived with meticulous presentation and a strong sense of identity. Every dish felt polished and intentional, balancing visual artistry with flavors that were equally compelling. There was never a moment where the meal lost momentum, and the pacing allowed each course to feel distinct while still contributing to a cohesive experience. That said, there was one course that completely missed the mark for our group. The milk and honey dessert, which resembled a sponge cake topped with a whipped goat cheese foam, was overwhelmingly pungent and difficult to approach as a dessert course. The intensity of the goat cheese dominated every other component, to the point where it felt less like a composed dessert and more like being punched by a goat farm. Looking around the dining room, it seemed we were not alone in our reaction. Interestingly, when we mentioned that this was the only dish we did not enjoy, we were told, "if at least 1 out of 10 guests enjoy it, we consider it a win." It was certainly an unexpected response, especially given how polished and thoughtful the rest of the experience had been. Even with that misstep, the overall meal was exceptional. SingleThread succeeds in delivering a dining experience that feels elegant, immersive, and deeply personal. Between the artistry of the presentations, the balance of flavors, and the technical execution across the menu, it remains one of the most impressive three Michelin star experiences in California.

The Wait: We sat for over 20 minutes before receiving water or placing our order. It took at least another 30 minutes for our very first dish to arrive. The Food: The steamer clams were overly salty and full of sand. One of the oysters was also shockingly tiny. When we pointed this out, the waitress claimed extra oysters had been added to the shells, but we did not see any evidence of that. The Service: Basic service was missing. We never received water refills, and our empty shell plates were never cleared, leaving a massive pile of clutter on the table. The Bill & Gratuity: A 20% gratuity was automatically added because we were a party of 6 (5 adults and a baby). After we expressed our dissatisfaction, the waitress did remove the automatic charge and said sorry that we didn't like the food. However, her apology felt insincere and making it clear she was mostly upset about losing part of her tip. We still left a 12% tip out of courtesy, but given the combination of poorly prepared food and unattentive service, we will not be returning.

The kale and cabbage salad was innovative with a fermented garlic vinaigrette dressing with crispy kale (never had that before) and marcona almonds. It was a substantial salad for two and was delicious - not too much dressing, the dressing wasn't overpowering, the cabbage was crisp - it all worked really well. Because they didn't have gluten free pizza crusts, got the asparagus, green garlic and speck pizza toppings over polenta, which came out sizzling hot in a pan. It probably was great as a pizza, but not great over polenta. The pizza's looked large, so instead of getting a pizza that would only be half eaten, ordered the radiatorre pasta with pork ragu as the second entree. The pasta was fresh, substantial and delicious. The ragu was good, not too saucy, but a little bland. It could have benefited from some fresh basil and a little more... oomph. The local wines - barbera and granache - were not our favorites so we ordered a bottle of sangiovese. Fairly pricey - it all came out to over $200.
