I typically grow out my hair and then donate it so I have done this several times in my life but since I have moved so much (Seattle to Hawaii to SF to NY) I have tried several places and this was one of the best hair donation experiences. First I love that they created their own non-profit when Pantene Beautiful Lengths was not accepting anymore hair donations. The wigs are created locally as well. I really respect that the salon has gone out of its way to provide this service. If you plan on donating, you will need to send an email with photos of your current length and a photo of what kind of haircut you are looking to get. They will not be able to use the ends of your hair so you will need to cut off about 10 inches in order to donate. Danielle did an amazing job. She took the time to put my hair into about 8 little ponytails (I have thicker hair) and I have never experienced that before. The shampoo and scalp massage was incredible and felt I was put into a dream state. I love the cut she did; it is fun and the length was perfect for me. I let her know that I usually just grow it all out and then chop it off to donate so she took the time to make sure the cut would grow out nicely. The hair donation price is $75 plus tax. You can get great hair color or a hair cut although it is expensive. I haven't gone there in many years, but they tended to get my hair right and do a good Bob haircut. I learned about the salon from the magazine "Allure." I don't have any photos to share or I would. They take major credit cards and do a good blow dry. Entered the salon in emergency mode after having a traumatic hair color incident expecting to feel a nervous wreck. The professionalism of the front desk and the fact that my colorist was literally waiting in reception for me put me immediately at ease. I had been lucky enough to have recently followed Dina (@hairhasdina) on Instagram after she transformed a good friend's look. After my hair was destroyed earlier this week by a formerly trusted colorist of many years, I sent her a dm and crossed my fingers. Not only did she respond nearly immediately, she corresponded with care and reassurance and booked me for the very next day. The disaster that was my hair walking in had taken over 5 hours. Dina looked at the wreckage, prescribed what sounded like a reasonable and simple treatment and went to work. One and a half hours later, I looked nearly exactly like the goal picture I had presented before any of this happened. Dina is kind and easygoing, but she is also a genius/magician. The results exceeded ALL expectation. I am booked for my follow up, my mother is going in two weeks, two friends are calling for appointments tomorrow and you should too. *On a side note, the owner Mark happened by our station at the end of my blowout and was incredibly warm and complimentary. I have to say that people literally stopped me in the streets and ask me who does my hair. For over twenty years I have flown to New York City to get my hair cut by Mark. Originally with long and very thick highlighted hair I arrived to my appointment once asking Mark to give me a 'monk's' cut. I received the best service I've experienced in a while at Mark Garrison Salon. A day before my vacation I was hitting up a bunch of salons looking for a quality color (root cover up) at a cost that wouldn't break my bank. One salon argued with me for a 1/2 hr, another didn't have any shampoo without wheat germ (allergy) and all others were wayyyyy out of my price range (clearly hair is quite the racket--Im in the wrong business ;)) but at Mark Garrison no one argued with me or sent me packing cause they couldn't do what I needed done for my price range. Instead, both Dina (colorist) and Mckensie (stylist) were called to the front to help me figure out what I needed and what services within my budget would be optimal. It worked out that what I needed wasn't in the Groupon deal but it ended up being the best/most cost effective option for me. Dina was super friendly and accommodating. To me there is nothing worse than radio silence in the salon chair so we just "shot the shit" about the neighborhood we have both lived in, our careers and of course...hair! It was easy and effortless. While I was waiting for my color to set Dina reminded me that refreshments were complimentary and offered again to grab something to drink. After I ordered my water, the nice front desk (maybe manager) lady came to me just to ask how I was doing and if everything I needed worked out (she was the one who called on the girls to help me figure it out when I came in.) I know it seems that Im focused more on service than performance but thats because, lately (especially today having visited so many salons) I find customer service, across industries in NYC to be deplorable. Having worked in the service industry for many years, I can't tolerate how little effort people put in to provide customer service and/or apply problem solving skills. So I was just super delighted that EVERYONE was so attentive and helpful at Mark Garrison. Lastly and of course most importantly, I LOVED how my color turned out!!! My first priority was to get rid of these greys before I headed off to Florida and I got EXACTLY what I wanted! It looks amazing!! I called Mark Garrison Salon when I wanted to donate my hair for the Pantene lengths program. They continue to give a discounted cut ($49) if you donate and allow you to make an appointment whenever, not just Wednesdays. My hair was definitely longer than 8 inches but it would be tight for the main layers so I wanted to go to a slightly nicer salon than usual. I decided to be a little bold and go for an undercut (chopping off the bottom layer close to the scalp) because I have pretty thick hair and it would enable me to give the most hair while retaining the top layers to look "professional." The bottom layer ended up being 12 inches, while I gave 8 inches from the middle layers! Addison was my stylist and he was very laid back and excited to do something a little more fun than the typical upper east side regulars. He was friendly without being too chatty, was super nice about getting me water, and made sure I was comfortable through the two hour session. (I have a LOT of hair). He also gave a great head massage with my shampoo. He was super patient and paid a lot of attention to the details. The front desk ladies were responsive, answered questions, handled water and jackets and payments, and we're very friendly. I did not have to wait long for my Friday 5:30 pm appointment (five minutes maybe?) You can tell they have a loyal following of regulars who make frequent appointments and they remember their names and preferences. Overall, I'm really happy with my shiny new cut, the whole salon team, and that I could do something nice and support a business that also cares about being nice! An amazing salon experience! Came with a Gilt voucher. Booking was easy and I got an appointment with Dina. She is very talented! I came in with mostly dark brown hair, interspersed with some fried blond ends and grays. I purchased a Groupon for a haircut, blowout, and style and on a whim, added a color service. They were very accommodating about my last minute request. My haircut was with Gregory, who was super friendly and listened to what I wanted. I had a horrible haircut before this one and Gregory was able to correct it and it came out looking awesome. I still wanted to keep the length, but needed a trim and some long layers. After my haircut and blow dry, I went upstairs to the second floor for my color. I was scheduled with Lyuba, who also is amazing at what she does. I had a bright blonde look going on, but it was beginning to fade and I wasn't a fan of such a light color with my skin tone anymore. I wanted to go darker, and Lyuba absolutely delivered. The entire process took about five hours since Lyuba was so meticulous. She did my hair in three separate sections: the sides and the back. She did one side first to see how the color would turn out and then continued with the other sections after. I am very happy with the service I received all throughout. From the moment I walk in to the moment I leave, I'm attended to with respect, diligence, and smiles left and right. No cut or color is out of bounds here. Come here for balayage with Edita - she will make you a beautiful blonde! Edita took her time during the consultation to really understand what I wanted. She did the hair painting in a few stages to get the perfect result. Then, she not only perfected the light blonde highlights, but also put in lowlights to create a multi-dimensional and voluminous look. To top it off she and her assistant were both very friendly and easy to get along with! The only downside of this appointment was the blowout, which was flat, boring and not even close to what I described. What was more annoying was the fact that the stylist (Ravit) kept mentioning how many curls there were, when there were absolutely none. Most of the Colorists and Stylists here have been with Mark for at least 5 years, so that indicates to me that I'm in the best salon for me because they like working with Mark and their clients. I buy my brushes, Babyliss blow dryer, Kerastase, Shu Uemura, Kerasilk and Fabuloso Pro here because I know these products are legitimate and priced at manufacturers suggested retail. I bought a 20/20 card for $20-this entitles me and my immediate family to 20 % off any retail products for a year. I really like the salon's Points program because it rewards clients for Pre booking appointments, for trying a new service, of it's your birthday month. It's a good idea and it's helped me to be loyal. I am really fussy about where I get my hair colored - it's always been one of the NYC premier salons - they did a fabulous job but I was tired of the "assembly line" vibe and the blase/aloof staff attitude.........so I tried a NYC small salon and that did NOT work out well!! I recently had the pleasure of crossing paths with Ravit, an apprentice at this salon and we instantly hit it off talking about hair color and styling. For a little bit of backstory I am a natural dark ashy blonde who has hilighted my hair for a good portion of my life. Now I also battle some (or a lot, whatever) grays on the sides of my head as well. A few months ago I had gone to my usual stylist (at another salon) and unfortunately wound up with some super brassiness that needed help desperately. The brassiness made the grays that were coming in look worse and I was literally miserable with how my hair was. So Ravit and I got to talking and she told me that I needed to go and see LUBA at Mark Garrison. If anyone could fix it, it would be her. Fast forward and here I am beyond happy with the results! Luba was amazing. She had insane attention to detail, I mean the most intricate hilights I have ever gotten in my life. So thin and precise. And after she was done, she dried my hair and then went back in to place some more in areas she felt necessary. I mean come on! Maybe I've just been cheating myself my whole life going where I was before, but I felt so pampered and I knew I was getting an A+ job with her. I wish I had a before pic to post to show the difference in the tone of the blonde compared to what I had before, but I filtered the crap out of them trying to hide my color. I came here after buying a Groupon for a Cezanne Keratin treatment and I am beyond happy with the results. I'm always wary of buying Groupons after reading enough stories about people having to jump through hoops in order to redeem their vouchers, or being given attitude when they arrive. Neither was the case at Mark Garrison Salon - I was able to get an appointment within a few days and was greeted warmly by staff. Danielle performed my Cezanne and she was fantastic! She really took her time with me, and was extremely knowledgeable when it came to fielding all of my questions. The treatment did exactly what I had hoped - I washed my hair the next day and blowing it out was a breeze, and it didn't turn into a frizzy mess when I walked out into the rain and humidity. Ask and you shall receive. I've never found the perfect colorist...until today. Walked into MG with a horrible "balayage" that I paid good money for at a well known salon in the area. I expressed my concerns to Dina and she delivered! Finally, a colorist that didn't fight me on getting highlights and even suggested highlights on trying to balance out the horrible colors in my hair. I don't know how she managed to make my highlights so beautiful keeping my natural root color but she did! Dina did not dissuade me on what I wanted to do unlike most stylists do or persuade me to do anything additional. She was so patient coloring and wrapping my hair with foil. There were a lot! She was so calm, cool and collected. She handled my hair with such confidence and that put me at ease. I walked out of the salon with heads turning and now I can walk around feeling confident and not embarrassed by my hair anymore. Shout out to Andrew for my beautiful blowout also! went to the salon today to be a blow dry model for a styling assistant, kyriakos (he does great blow outs and gives great massages). the salon was easy to find, right off 59th St & Lex via the 4/5/6 train. the receptionist was very friendly, and even though the phones were ringing off the hook, she made time to greet me and ask me if i wanted a drink while waiting for the stylist assistant. the instructors seemed very supportive and hands on, making sure to have their clients leaving looking beautifully. this salon definitely deserves 5 stars for friendliness, ambiance, clean salon, and very helpful and cheery staff. p.s the lightening there was perfect for selfies read more
