I used to frequent some of the top high-end salons on the UES; that was until I discovered MK Salon.... This wonderful, unassuming salon, well-located near Bloomindale's, is my go-to for styling, blow dries and hair color. Marshall Kim, a master colorist, watches over all of his employees and makes sure everyone adheres to his high standards. Liza has long been my stylist and, she knows exactly how to smooth out my long, frizz-prone hair. She is talented and experienced, and pays attention to her clients. She is always up to date on all the newest products and techniques. Whenever I need a pick-me-up (sometimes several times a week), I head straight to Liza for a shampoo and blow dry! She never disappoints, and knows exactly what I want... Clients also swear by her Keratin treatments and eye for color and highlights. (And, the prices are extremely reasonable, particularly for the UES.) read more

Do not go to Liza. I was nervous walking in because I've had horrible experiences at salons in nyc but I thought I'd give this salon a shot for a single process dye. How hard could it be? You can't mess up a simple 1B -off black/brown color. I told Liza that I was getting married and needed my hair to match extensions I was getting done at another salon. She then proceeded to ask me if she could work at the other salon to do color.. weird comment to say? Then said that the owner charges cheap prices. Another weird comment by an employee? I explicitly told her I did NOT want BLACK hair. I wanted it to match my roots off black. Again telling her it NEEDS to match my extensions. I don't know if she was hard of hearing or she was just trying to give me what I didn't want. I would say "off black" and she would say "BLACK." It was as if she didn't understand me but there was no language barrier. She then doesn't ask me if I want permanent or semi permanent and just starts putting the permanent hair dye aggressively. I DID NOT WANT PERMANENT. I asked her AGAIN what color she was applying and she said 2B. I said NO 1B after half my head was filled with dye. She then asks me why I don't go lighter?! And if my fiancé likes blondes?! Her behavior was incredibly strange with no self awareness and just inappropriate! She then adds what I think is 1 - JET BLACK hair product to my hair and leaves it on for 40 minutes to get exactly the color I specifically said I did NOT want -- jet black. To top it off she doesn't blow dry my hair and changes the topic when I say this is BLACK not off black. Not to mention her colleague told me one price on the phone then she said another price $50 more. I'd rather pay more money and get the job done properly than go back here. The owner however, seemed very nice -- he should get rid of Liza since she's scooping out other salons anyway. Do yourself a favor, she's bad for your business. Whatever you do don't go to Liza unless you want to feel like you're talking to a wall. No acknowledge or apology for messing up my hair and now having permanent jet black hair that won't match my extensions, THANKS LIZA. read more

I do NOT enjoy getting my haircut. It ranks high up there with the dentist Today I Yelped haircuts near me because I didn't want to return to my last stylist. Because of the reviews I read about MK Salon I decided to walk over there and be a walk in before I freaked out and canceled any appt I would've made. Deciding to let faith take over. So glad I did. I was blessed to get a fantastic haircut by File! She cut 4 inches off and styled my hair exactly like the picture I showed her. She checked in with me several times to make sure I was happy with what was taking place willing to fix anything before I left. I didn't need it fixed she has made a fan out of me and I will return. Should I mention that in the heart of midtown Manhattan my shampoo and cut was $47.00??? Fantastic. Thank You File read more

It had 5 star reviews so I called and got a same day appointment. I was quoted $55 for cut and blow dry and it was on a price list when I walked in. File did my hair. I showed her a picture of what I wanted, but she asked me if I wanted an angle cut or layers in the back. I seem to have had some communication problems as I was not sure if she understood English very well. The picture had bangs and I had to ask for that after she told me she was finished. I also asked her to blend the bangs in and layer the side and she told me because I had a big head I should not get that done. It would make my head look bigger. She accommodated and trimmed a bit but it wasn't what I wanted. After I came home I also noticed that one side is slightly longer than the other. When I checked out she charged me $76. She said it was because my hair was long. I had about 1.5 inches cut from the bottom and my hair falls just below my shoulders, I think I was bamboozled a bit. I was going to bring my 2 daughters but their hair is alot longer than mine. I can't imagine what they would charge for them. I'm a nice person and I always tip service, I gave her $20 as tip which is my normal for a haircut. I wanted to add the owner MK contacted me and was apologetic. He refunded me the money and offered to fix my hair. I will try this salon again and see what the next experience will be like and will post a second review. read more

I found MK on yelp and the photos looked great. I thought the layers they did were gorg and i called to get a trim. I decided i would try them out for a keratin treatment. They did an amazing job. The short version: Their actual pricing didn't remotely match what was listed on their website. The details: I was in town for a black-tie wedding and wanted to get an updo. Based on their website, they had competitive pricing for salons in the area ($50 for an updo) AND good reviews, so I made an appointment. It took about 45 minutes; the hairdo itself was fine and held up all night, but when I went to pay, I was told it would be $130, despite not getting any add-ons (the stylist added product, curled my hair, used a bun shaper, a few plain plastic hair-ties, and plain bobby-pins, but that was it--no fancy bling or decorative pieces). In the end I paid $110 plus tax, but that was still more than double the price listed on their website (I checked a few weeks before when I made the appointment, again the day of, and tripled checked afterward). If they're going to charge $130, fine (it's Manhattan), but their quoted prices need to match what they actually charge. (As a side note, I said that I wanted a chignon and showed a few photos, but ended up with something not remotely resembling a chignon--it was a high bun. In the stylist's defense, though, I said I was not set on recreating exactly what was in the pictures, so I'm not significantly factoring this into my 2-star rating.) read more

I came in on a red eye Friday AM from the West Coast and needed a blowout for a weekend wedding. When MK told me the price over the phone I wondered if they were going to charge separately for the shampoo, but nope, it was "all inclusive." Alex has been cutting and coloring my mother's hair for many years. He does an excellent job in every way. On top of that he is so kind. My mother is elderly now and needs special attention. Hair stylist that did an amazing job at rescuing my hair is Kelly! Kelly, thank you for taking all of the disgusting damaged brittle straw like hair and somehow making me look amazing in a bob. I have had a bob done before and it's hard to not get the ugly bump at the center back of the head but you don't have to worry about any of that if your hair is in Kelly's hand. She really took her time with thinning out the back since I have thick Ecuadorian hair :) she's phenomenal. I sent my niece to her recently and my niece is super picky on how hair is cut and styled and she called me in love seconds after leaving Kelly. I noticed the review and chose to go there because it was close to my college. I only had a haircut because I didn't have enough time, therefore no shampoo or wash. According to the website, the haircut costs only $35. However, they overcharged me, claiming it was $45 (I did not wash my hair), and I unknowingly provided additional tips totaling $60. It was my fault for not conducting a deeper inquiry because I was in a hurry, so make sure to ask ahead of time. Never going back there! I'm disappointed because the haircut went well and since the salon is so close, it was very convenient for me. They should have been specific about what they charge. read more

I read about this salon on Yelp and was passing by and decided to stop in. The place was very welcoming and I decided to give it a try. I had read about File and she was available. I have long hair and was way overdue for a trim but I was so afraid of someone taking too much off. File was wonderful. She listened to what I wanted and suggested how much she should cut and I totally trusted her. I didn't want a blowout because it was pouring outside, but she dried a few pieces to make sure it was ok. I will definitely be going back. And the price was more than reasonable.
