I saw Dr. Zeme on the recommendation of my PCP, who spoke highly of him. He stated "This is who I would send my sister to". I had read the negative reviews and I had prepared myself for what I thought would be a very short and dismissive visit. I have worked in healthcare for over 26 years and I am very familiar with these types of providers. I am honestly confused at the other reviews. Dr. Zeme and his staff were very friendly. Other than the intake questions, blood pressure, and temp check, Dr. Zeme handled the entire visit himself. He was personable and even cracked a few jokes during the visit. He checked the problem area and sent a prescription to my pharmacy. The problem is completely resolved. I did bring up another side issue. He did redirect me to the main issue that I was there for after letting me know the side issue is a non concern and the treatment would be more harmful than letting it be. Being in healthcare I understand refocusing on the main issue due to appointment time and insurance reimbursement. If you have more than 1 issue, let them know when you make the appointment so they can schedule the appropriate amount of time. Sometimes you need to come in for another appointment if you have a laundry list of problems. It is standard to address the top 2-3 problems in 1 visit and reschedule for the rest. Bottom line, I thought the whole office was great. Dr. Zeme knew what my diagnosis was immediately and all it took was a prescription to fix it up (I was worried it needed a biopsy). read more

If you're expecting a callback or an email response, prepare for disappointment. It's like shouting into a canyon and hearing nothing but your own echo. They might as well communicate via carrier pigeons. Emails? Voicemails? Smoke signals? Nah, let's stick to parchment scroll. I womder if Dr. Zeme is aware of how his staff handles his patients. the worst of any doctor that I have ever had and I have seen many doctors for myself and my special needs son at M.D. Anderson in Texas, UCLS, Stanford, Johns Hopkins etc.- great for initial visit - then all hell breaks loose.. Non responsive. Sends you to UCSF and they have an issue so he refuses to refer back to Eden. Uncooperative and very non supportive. Just lets you flow in the wind even after being a patient. Once he refers you out that is it . . . no follow up even if you ask for it. DO NOT GO TO HIM. Went for an anosmia assessment and I had a positive overall experience with this doctor and office. Parking was a breeze and the facility is nice. Dr Zeme is definitely chatty, but I didn't mind and he offered a multi-step plan to address my situation and suggested a follow-up with another doctor as part of my plan. Recently took my mom for an audio and the lady doing the audios Is very professional and kind. Making an appointment can be difficult because they schedule far out. The doctor assistant is super helpful and very caring she explained the appointment to us and also was kind to help me put my mother into the exam chair. Dr. Zeme's office staff is NOT doing their job! I am a patient who cannot schedule an annual appointment. I received a reminder card and have called the office 3X and actually went to the office in-person today and still don't have an appointment. There always seems to be a reason why they cannot schedule. Today I spoke with a woman at the desk who said it wasn't her job to schedule but she would speak with scheduler and get back to me herself. NOTHING! I was scheduled to have surgery on my sinuses and I wanted to find out if I was in good hands so I went thru and read every single review that Dr Zeme had on here. As far as the negative points go, I don't get it. I liked Dr Zeme and his staff from the very start. I found him very personable and his nurse Julianna was super sweet too. I always felt totally comfortable in his care. He explained everything to me and I was in the OR for maybe an hour. I had to have septoplasty and another procedure (the medical terminology escapes me) to clear out a really bad sinus infection that antibiotics could not clear up. From start to finish the whole process was under 6 hours. I was home by noon. Everything went off without a hitch and I healed up nice and quick. I have had several aftercare appointments which are always super fast. I've never had to do any kind of waiting when I go to his office. So I would definitely recommend Dr Zeme if your looking for an ENT specialist. I would like to say Thank you so very much Dr Zeme and Julianna for your exceptional care!! read more

I have been Dr mark zemes patient for two years and up until recently he had been okay for the most part. I usually go to him for my throat issues, but two weeks ago he had briefly mentioned I had a deviated septum (I already knew this just didn't know why he waited two years to tell me) and then quickly rushed me out the door. fast forward to day, I told him I wanted to do the surgery to fix my septum bc it has been giving me chronic nosebleed, migraines and congestion for years and it is affecting my sining(i am a performer) when I brought these concerns to his attention, he went so far as to mock me by saying "ok doctor" in a super sarcastic tone. he told me to go to an allergist and to another ent in oakland. that is not the part that bothers me, what bothers me is he barely looked at me and had me breathe through my nose and decided I wasn't a good candidate for surgery. I came to his office with severe ear infections in both ears, he didn't even look at my ears before telling I didn't have good hygiene, he had me reclined in the chair and was screaming in my face. I suffered for years with constant sinus infections, and he was the dr that finally listened to me, and cured my ailment after literally dozens of previous drs, and copious amounts of antibiotics. Dr.Z is very knowledgeable and seems to have a fun personality but when discussing potential surgery I need a Doctor who is carful and extremely professional. He starting cursing during my session while telling me a personal story and for me that just wasn't okay. If you don't show me professionalism while having a conversation why would I trust you to do surgery on my face?! Right after the appointment receptionist said they will call to schedule for an MRI, they just needed to charge insurance and it will take a week to get confirmation, three weeks later they leave me a voicemail saying they need me to call them as soon as possible because they can't schedule me if they can't find my insurance. What??! Ive been waiting for a call for three weeks! I've had the same insurance for over 2years and I gave them my insurance card during my first appointment and nothing has changed. My other doctors have no problem finding my insurance info so what should they when I have it to them and they said everything was fine, but for me that second time was strike three and I'm out! read more

I'm not going to say anything about the doctor himself because I couldn't even go see him in person. I got a referral from my doctor to see him and I kept trying to call the place but they either didn't pick up, or they go back and forth between telling me that they don't have the referral, or they do have the referral, but I have to wait a week for them to review it, then I wait a week and then call again but they don't answer. They even told me that they'd call me once they have it but I never once got a call back from this place, so you have to go out of your way to call and ask if they got it yet, that is if they even pick up. I even checked their office hours and what time they went on break and called at a perfectly reasonable time and even then they still wouldn't pick up, I don't know if they literally have no one there, or the staff just purposely lets the phone go to voicemail. I called the office of my doctor and just asked if I could see another ear doctor and luckily I'm seeing someone else now, but this office has completely wasted 3 weeks of me calling every single day to no one answering and the hope to finally schedule an appointment. I'm lucky that my ear problem isn't painful and that I'm not really in a rush to see an ear doctor, because I'd be even more frustrated if I was having pain and the office of the doctor I'm supposed to be seeing straight up ignores my calls and voicemails. To anyone reading this that got a referral to see this doctor, I highly recommend to find another one unless you like calling the same place over and over again to schedule an appointment. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about the doctor himself, I see some people say he's the nicest doctor ever, and I hear that he's the rudest doctor ever, but unfortunately I'll never know because I'm not trying to wait months to go see him. read more

I've seen him a number of times now. He's a likeable person, and I'm sure he's often great at what he does. However, he talks way more than he listens. Incredibly more. Women will probably get this: this is the kind of male doctor that invalidates your concerns and experiences and mansplains. I don't have a nicer way to say it. He's not a bad person, and his personality is gregarious and fun. But he has ignored me, talked over me, laughed at my (reasonable) conclusions (which I had also discussed with other health professionals, BTW), and brushed aside my lived experience as irrelevant to his diagnosis, even going so far as to try to talk me out of conclusions I had come to about my own body through my own experience in it as if I were hysterical/overemotional/irrational. These are really classic issues that women have in health care I've learned. Would not recommend until he addresses these issues. read more

I went to see Dr. Mark Zeme after waiting for 4 months due to my vertigo dizziness problem. They did a hearing test and the doctor came in and told me my problem is not my ear it comes from migraine headaches. He didn't even looked inside my ears or anything.he only talked to me for not more than one minute. I never complained about hearing problem . With that they just rushed me out. The front desk girls are so amazing and helpful. I called so many times and each time they were so patient with me and my referral process. Thank you. They were able to get me in quick. When I came in for my appointment again the front desk girl was nice and so was the nurse. I read a lot of negative reviews about Dr. Zeme so I wasn't sure what to expect. He came in introduced himself and will tell u he's straight forward and immediately got to the process. Is he gonna listen to ur sob story?!Nooo. First, I would say that his treatment did improve things for my sinuses. I'll get that out of the way. It was not a unique approach in any way. Rather standard. But it got the job done. Now on to what makes me want to avoid going back to see this guy. 20-40 minute delays in getting seen. And that's with an appointment. People have lives. Other appointments. Planes to catch. This is extremely unprofessional. The excuses given by staff added insult to injury. On a Saturday morning, first appointment of the day, a patient should not be kept waiting 30 minutes while the good doctor finishes a staff meeting. Pushing procedures you might not need, like balloon sinuplasty, advertised prominently in the waiting area and pushed upon me at every appointment so far. Just because my insurance covers it, does not mean I want it or that it is necessary. A lot of salesman in this doctor. Those BMWs don't buy themselves, I guess. A bad personality. Unctious, smug, insincerely earnest. He will speak to you like you are a very young child or a very, very old person. I appreciate that he has a medical degree but that does not automatically make him cleverer than I am. Especially given how he runs his office. Speak to me like another adult, Dr Zeme. Explain things clearly without the bizarre chumminess. I don't want a friend. I want my sinuses seen to. My children thought he was awful and they are generally well-disposed towards doctors. My GP reluctantly recommended Dr Zeme because the 'good ENT' is not covered on my insurance. What a world we live in. I don't think I will go back. read more

First off, let me start by saying Dr. Zeme performed my first surgery and cleared up my sinuses for about 1 year. Even though the surgery was a success, there was very little follow up and suggestions on how to maintain my sinuses for the long term. I know this because my current Dr. has performed 1 surgery and I have not had to go back for 4 years. So why a 2 star rating? After not seeing Dr. Zeme for about a year, I decided to get a check up. First thing he asks when I go into his office is "Hello, I see you still owe us an outstanding invoice". "Well, great to see you too Dr Zeme, Im great!, thanks for asking" I understand collections is something that doctors have to deal with, but isn't this what your staff is supposed to be doing? Aren't you just supposed to diagnose? Anyway, before I leave I pay my invoice and assume that I'm paying for my old visit as well as my current visit. Next thing I know, I get a collections call 2 months later saying I owe Dr. Zeme $120 dollars. I would gladly pay, but I dont even get a call?? This was in 2007 and has negatively affected my credit report until this day... 2 stars for performing a successful surgery -1 for bad bedside manner and cocky attitude -1 for not having a follow up plan for patients on our to control sinus issues. -1 for bad collection policy. read more

I was referred to Dr. Zeme by my daughter's orthodontist. She was diagnosed with a large adnoid. He took a great deal of time with her (a good 30 minutes) and was amazingly gentle. While he was checking her adnoid, he allowed me to look through the scope to see what he was talking about. If you have kids, send them to Dr. Zeme. My 8 year old absolutely loves him. I read the other reviews regarding his office. They are totally correct. While his staff is very polite, they are not really all that 'friendly'. Almost distant. The office is in a portable, but it is clean and the examination rooms are spacious enough. The glass window is shut and I didn't see a bell outside. With that being said... I am not paying the big bucks for Dr. Zeme's office staff. I am paying him for HIS services. I definitely got what I paid for and more. P.S. If your tonsils are inflamed for 6 months, duh... you need to get them out! read more

I have had inflamed tonsils for over six months. I had a bad bout with mono and had strep in December but had since had many strep tests that were negative. I saw Dr. Zeme in May 2010 via referral of my doctor since I didn't want to go to Dr. Kahn. First of all, his office is currently in a portable, so it's cramped and hot. The people at the front desk were nice enough but didn't really seem to know what they were doing. I asked them to make sure they had gotten my refferal so I wouldn't have problems with my insurance and they didn't know what I was talking about. They claimed they did not get my referral, so I had to give them a filled out copy I had, which they did not give back. Anyway, they called me in after maybe 15 minutes and in comes the doctor. I tell him my story, give him all the dates of my previous mono, strep tests and doctors exams since I got sick. He didn't write any of it down. Then he takes maybe a one second look at my tonsils, exclaims they are huge and says I have strep and my tonsils need to come out. Then I ask him what he's talking about since I have had MANY negative strep tests. He says the strep could be so deep in my tonsils it cannot be detected and that they definity need to come out. I ask him about the surgery and he answers my questions but really seems rushed and like he doesn't want to be bothered with all my concerns. He starts explaining that my tonsils have become "double agents" and are working against me rather than for me. I ask him if it could be some other bacteria or virus besides strep, like MRSA. he says it could but that since te infection is in the tonsils everything will be cleared up after he does the surgery. I'm no doctor but shouldn't you KNOW for sure what you have before you get surgery? The Dr. offered to have me go in for surgery in a week, explained that his assistant would come in and answer the rest of my questions an tell me more about the surgery, and left. I don't think he is a "bad" doctor, but he skips necessary steps that should be happening. About a month later I went back to see my regular doctor because my tonsils were hurting again (they has been swollen but not painful for awhile) she did a strep test on me and it came back positive. So yes, maybe Dr. Zeme was right about that. When my doctor was leaving, she asked me which ENT I went to and I told her Mark Zeme and he took one look at me and said he needs to do surgery. She sort of made this weird sly smile like that happens alot, and told me Dr. Zeme is extremely surgery happy, and she doesn't know many people he has NOT said he needed to do surgery on. I urge you to go somewhere else rather than Kahn or Zeme. Or at least get a second opinion before letting this guy cut you open. read more

Carol the receptions would NOT allow me to make an appointment until the doctor reviews the notes from my PCP office who wrote the referral. She claimed she would call me back which SHE FAILED to call me back. She confirmed the paperwork was received. When calling her back after waiting for her call three days later. I attempted to me a appointment she was ready to allow me to make an appointment without questions. But she gave me a lame excuses why the doctor wants review a referral. Which shows NO medical notes nor history. Which leads me to believe this office has a gate keeper which needs better supervision. read more

I regret the day I ever walked into his office 16 yrs ago! I've been off work for 11 yrs now dealing with health issues related to toxic mold exposure. I didn't realize until just a couple years, when I started having brain scans done, that he took out my mid turbinates! I thought he was just correcting my deviated septum. I didn't need that surgery back then, I needed to get the toxic mold spore laden furniture out of my life! Exposure to water damaged furniture or buildings cause the mid turbinates to swell. When I had to go back to him last year to investigate a cloudy area in my right maxillary sinus, I took him a paper trail of evidence showing toxic mold exposure and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). He literally threw the stack of papers on the chair and refused to look at them or believe anything that I told him. He proceeded to tear something out of my sinus which he called "debris" and refused to send it to a lab that focuses on toxic mold. He wanted to send it to "his" lab. When I went back 2 wks later, I told him he set off a hellstorm of terrible symptoms in my body and could barely function. The test showed a probiotic that I was using in my sinus rinse bottle and staph. Later I read a PubMed article that stated when Aspergillus and Bacillus come together on the same hyphae, they mutually alter their metabolism. Of course he doesn't want to read anyone's research. Aspergillus being torn from my sinus would elicit a hellstorm of symptoms in a person's body. On another test, from the mold lab he refused to utilize, they did find Aspergillus Niger in my sinuses. The results were in the stack of papers that I gave him and he refused to read. The next month when my Immunologist wanted a tissue culture, he first quoted me the Hypocrite Oath to do no harm to patients. Then proceeded to snooker me into thinking that sinus scraping was the same as a tissue culture. After that he was fired and I went on to another ENT, who found I had a recirculation issue from his initial surgery where he took out my mid turbinates! She took a rope like "thing" out of my sinuses that never showed on a CT scan. I had yet another hellstorm set off in my body. I wonder what Hypocrites has to say about not properly listening to or treating patients who have well documented problems?! It was really sad being in his office and hear him say to almost every patient as he exited the room, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. :-( Thankfully I have a caring physician who has me on an appropriate treatment of antifungals and my health is improving. read more
