The is active ongoing supervision of the school at critical times for drop off and pick up. Trained crossing guards to walk the kids across the lanes in front of the school to the staff and visitor parking lot. Sufficient disabled parking. Principal daily involved often crossing children and parents across the street. I had pretty high hopes for the school, but I am shocked at how rude and bitchy the people are in the office, especially this one lady I will not name, but I cannot wait to transfer my kid to another school. Title: I am not a Mark Twain fan, well the author I mean. The school? Well, I am totally a fan! At first I must address the title. I am really not a Mark Twain fan. It was really awkward in middle school where the teacher made us read pages out loud of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Seeing kids squirm as they are forced to read racial epitaphs. (I mean seriously, you couldn't just name the guy Jim!) If anything it should be something discussed in college. I heard they tried to clean up the book a bit. Even Mark Twain said that he wrote the book for adults. Whatever the reason, hopefully they don't have the kids read the book here. It would make since being the name sake and all. However, hopefully they send a letter saying they are reading a Mark Twain book. I will gladly excuse my children from having to read his works. Anyway... The school? Well, it is a great school. We were living in Loma Linda and was trying to buy a home there, but was coming up empty. We wanted to stay there because of the good schools. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a house in the school district. My wife set her sights to Riverside and I must admit I wasn't too happy about it. I didn't think we would be able to find a house near a school that had high rankings and standards. We were lucky to find new homes being built near this school. She need a little bit more assistance due to her easily being distracted. This can cause her to fall behind in her school work. She did start to struggle, but we were able to place her in the IEP. (Individualized Education Program) And once they realized that she may need more help she was moved to another school temporarily (Taft Elementary School) to help her even more. Her test scores improved and she was able to return to Mark Twain after one year. She is now attending 6th grade. I have a younger son who also attends the school (3rd grade) and he is having no problems. I don't understand the previous reviewers gripe about homework. It seems to be sufficient to me, especially for elementary school. At this stage your child will probably ask for assistance, and with 2 parents with careers it is a difficult task to ask them after a long day, to also have to deal with a large amount of homework. Not everyone can be a stay at home mom or dad. I will also add that the principal (Debra Ausman-Haskins) has always been nice to my kids. When I reenrolled my daughter here a few days ago, she stopped to say hi to my daughter and to welcome her back. She even walked my daughter to her new class, when we were waiting for someone else to do it. This is my daughters last year here, but we are lucky that her middle school (Frank Augustus Miller Middle School) has high state ranking as well. (API Score - State Rank 9 out of 10.) Mark Twain Elementary School may be named after a guy I don't care for, but as a school it is everything you could want in a school for your kids. read more

I love this school, I think everyone is great from the lunch staff and supervisors, to the teachers. Both my kids are attending this school and I think they are doing a great job. The campus is always clean, and the teachers are all so approachable. read more

I transferred my kids from another school district to Mark Twain because of all the wonderful things people had to say about this school. When my kids started school I noticed many negative things. First off all I notice parents walking in & out of the school without signing in the front office. The front office ladies are extremely rude (except for Rosa) they all have a bad attitude not friendly at all I can imagine how they treat the kids they have no people skills what so ever. Principal is also rude does not greet parents nor students (not sure why she hasn't retired), class is suppose to start @ 8:05 to me this means the students need to be in their seats ready to learn at 8:05 but I often saw teachers too busy talking to each other and didn't open the door until 5 min later and I am sure of that because I am one of the parents that don't go home until I see my kids walking inside their class. They don't give enough homework. kids are just not being challenge, teachers have very low expectations, need more training, and sometimes can be a bit discriminating as well as the principal. Principal walks around like she's the big boss or something not humble at all. Anyways will be taking my kids out as soon as the school year is over. FYI, there's two yelpers here that rated this school a 5 star but that's only because they work here. read more

i attend mark twain and I am a 6th grader. I have been since kindergarten. The office staff is sweet and the teachers her trained greatly the principal is the best she is very understanding. Mark twain is a bully free school I have to leave twain and I am greatly appreciated of all the kids and people there. We 6th graders attend many field trips like science camp.
