I scored Markel with 5 stars simply because they just makes sense. A while ago, over the course of 3 years, I got 2 speeding tickets, while commuting to my job 65 miles away, ..., using a car, not a motorcycle. I changed jobs and my commute became 10 miles. I saw a great opportunity on a motorcycle. The one I always wanted. It was practically brand new at half the price, so I bought it. I looked at several insurance companies. They all wanted $800-$2500/year because of my speeding tickets. ...in a car. ...for work. I'm an old guy, very stable, high income, retired military, family man, .... Very, very low risk for an insurance company. Annual miles on the motorcycle - about 500 miles, commuting to work on occasion. I spend most of my time polishing it. Value of the motorcycle - $8000, and depreciating. So, most insurance companies wanted me to pay a premium that I can use to buy another motorcycle every 4-8 months. Except Markel. Markel wanted about $120/year. All the insurance companies know the value of the bike is low. They know I ride the bike only occasionally. They know I have a very good credit history. They know I have medical insurance. They know the number of my motorcycle traffic tickets is 0. While the other insurance companies wanted an arm and a leg to insure a man's polishing toy, Markel, on the other hand, provided me with a reasonable insurance policy. Simple as that. This has got to be the worst company and insurer on the planet. I know; I worked for them for a while! There motto is to walk around with smiles with fake employee relations while they screw the customer all while remodeling with teak wood and elaborate in-house gyms! Whats more...promotions and hires are based on who you know and who does the least amount of work. If you know the HR Director from the Red Bank location and take long lunches, come in late, and snarl at everyone...you got the job and or the promotion; I could smile with that type of set up too, but unfortunately I was a worker(threat)...and couldn't see the ethics in slowing down, enjoying the ride and screwing the customers! Do as little as you can, deny claims and receives fat employee bonuses- the Markel way!. Not only that...everyone seemed so twitchy in this place with a sense of "Oh my god, i better keep kissing ass so I don't get fired". It was truly disgusting to witness. I can't say enough with how happy I am with the purchase I made with Markel Insurance for my wedding/reception. The one claim I had ultimately paid for the policy, and helped me recoup nearly $400 when the video company I had hired went out of business with no notification. The claim was approved in minutes and the claim paid, via check, in a few days! Wedding planning is stressful enough without having to worry about vendors failing to provide the service you paid for. Having the cancellation insurance not only reimbursed me the money, but made that experience a super small "blip" in the process, and a WIN for Markel because then now have a great referral in me! I have been working with Markel for over 25 years - and I have gone through many changes and worked with many Markel employees from underwriters to Management - and Markel made the changes easy, and the workflow just kept going. Markel hires excellent people with good work ethics and knowledgeable Insurance Professional. The also hire intelligent new graduates and teaches them insurance from the ground up. So I know if I have an insurance question - I can trust my Markel underwriters to know or know where to find the correct answer. Always provided a very competitive insurance rate premium for especially those who drive defensively and have an excellent track record of no accidents or claims which in this case is on my motorcycle for 3 decades now! Too often the most responsible are lumped into the throngs and end up paying a higher premium for the lack of others, which is unjust but far too many insurance companies do that! The adage "you get what you pay for" is true, but also in this type of situation "you pay what you deserve to pay;" so it is always "best to keep your act together to avoid trouble or cost!" The Markel Insurance Company helped us on our 50th high school reunion by providing insurance for the venue where the reunion was held. They were fast, friendly, and helpful to understand our needs and concerns. We held the reunion at the Studebaker National Museum where there are a lot of vintage cars, covered wagons and history of the Studebaker industry. The Markel company covered our reunion in case something was broken or damaged and the price was very reasonable. If we were to have another event like this one I would use them again. We shopped online for wedding insurance for our daughter's wedding. Markel's coverage choices & pricing were definitely the best we found. We were directed to Markel by the many reviews from wedding blogs we had read. And, we did end up purchasing our insurance at the last minute (wedding planning seems to continue all the way up to the last minute!) & Markel was the only insurance that covered everything at the late date. Some of the other insurances excluded certain things that you could insure, due to the late date. We would recommend Markel to anyone planning a wedding. read more

Not only was Markel the best price on the market for my motorcycle and trust me I know I've been a rider for over 50 years and I've owned lotta motorcycles. Unfortunately two weeks after purchasing the Markel policy I wrecked my motorcycle. Mark in claims was the best I have ever dealt with in any insurance claim that I've had in my life. Markel saved my horse Nacho's life. Markel Colic Insurance and Medical/Surgical/Morbidity insurance took the hard decision making out of the process for me when Nacho needed surgery. The vet hospital charged $2,000 before I even took him off the trailer and another $2,000 for emergency surgery; his final bill over $6,000. I didn't have to decide if it was worth the gamble of spending the money to try and save Nacho's life. In short order the policy was organized, paid for, and in my email within a few hours. Called back a few days later to make a small change. Again, a person answered, cheerful, competent, efficient. Done and in my email quickly. Best decision to purchase Wedding Insurance. We bought our package in January of 2020 for a July 2020 wedding. When Covid shut down California, our wedding events needed to be postponed. Markel's website was really easy to navigate and find exactly what I needed for our event policy for our wedding. They had plenty of coverage options and their pricing was very competitive. I signed up for motorcycle insurance because of excellent rates. I had an accident a few months back and the claims process went without a hitch. They were easy to contact, courteous, and extremely professional throughout the entire process. Great value for the premium. The company proves its quality in times when you need it most, when you have an accident. I have had one, totaled my bike, bought a new bike some time later and contacted Markel. I was surprised to see that my premium did not increase as a result of the accident (which was at my fault). When I disclosed I had an accident they said they could see it and that "this is why you have insurance". That is enough proof for me that this is a great company. read more

I looked at every insurance I could find to insure my Harley. After comparing every insurance I found the Markel. I live paycheck to paycheck and was only able to afford minimum legal Insurance with another company. With Markel I am now insured with every coverage possible AND roadside assistance for several hundred less. The roadside even covers vehicles that aren't on my policy. SERIOUSLY BEST DEAL EVER!!! Ask them to Cease and Desist from trying to collect a debt that we didn't owe because one of their insurance agents lied to us to sell us a product. They refused to Cease and Desist. They don't care about their customers and they are unprofessional. They sell their debts to Leviton who threatened my empolyees on the phone and also refuse to cease and desist.
