You know I really want to like Mark's Feed Store I just really can't. It is just adequate that is about the best way I can describe the food at Mark's Feed Store they do have decent barbecue the prices or just not worth it for a barbecue place that I can go out to somewhere much better like Famous Dave's or places like that I do not recommend Mark's Feed Store. Great lunch experience! The server was incredibly friendly and attentive, one of the best I've had in a long time. The reviews are pretty good, though, so had I researched it on my own I may still have chosen it. It is big place with a good amount of seating downstairs and upstairs. There is a big room upstairs ideal for big groups. There is also a decent amount of parking in the adjacent lot. The food is a good value.You get a good amount for your money. It is ok. I did not dislike it but it was not good either. Just ok. I ordered the brisket meal. It comes with your choice of two sides and country toast. I opted for the Sweet Fried Corn on the Cob and the Loaded Baked Potato. Both sides were good. The corn was a little dry but the flavor was still good. The toast was good, quite buttery, but good. The brisket was ok. As I noted above, not bad, but not good either. It was tender, but lacked flavor. Of course there is sauce for that, but I would have liked more flavor before adding sauce. They have a red and gold sauces. I tried both. Both were fine. I opted for the gold as it is a flavor I do not get as often. Evidently the Buttermilk Pie is something special. My best friend from West Virginia told me to try Mark's Feed Store, so I had to try. Tony and I chose the one on Bardstown Rd because I wanted to see the old building architecture. Very lovely old building. We were seated in the middle of the floor at a table, but I was very uncomfortable so I asked if they would clean a dirty booth and let us move. We moved over and I was more comfortable. We ordered a platter with Brisket, Ribs, Pulled Pork and chicken wings, with 2 sides, Tony chose a baked potato and Mac n cheese, then I ordered 2 additional sides green beans and baked beans, with a basket of corn muffins. We split everything and it was good. NOT THE BEST EVER, BUT it was good especially the Green Beans and Brisket. They give you choice of sauces, not to crazy about the mustard base sauce. I've been eating at Mark's Feed Store since I was a little kid with my parents, and I'm pretty sure I've never been to this location. I'm about 96% sure that this is the coolest location I've ever been to. It had all of the rustic flair of any of the locations I've been to, just kicked up a notch. They seated our party in their upper seating area in their banquet area. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, as I hadn't made the arrangements and I was with a rather larger party (maybe 30 people?). For such a large group, service was blindingly fast and almost all at once (rather than a little at a time). My favorite standards, the pork bbq, honeywings, burgoo, and spicy fries were all spot on. I even saw a few things I've never seen ordered by a few folks that looked AMAZING. I'm definitely going to have to try their fried fish and pasta salad at some point down the road. One of my favorite places just got better. This is a must stop for me whenever I'm Louisville. Service is fantastic, food is delicious. Seated quickly on a Saturday afternoon. Restaurant is located amongst cute mom and pop shops you can casually stroll through after dining. Mark's Feed Store always has a welcoming environment that reminds me of a local eatery on a Hallmark Christmas Movie. Wood floors, cute decor and a pleasurable atmosphere. So what is one of the things which urges you to hit Mark's Feed Store out of the blue? You check and realize that the gift card you received as part of a Yelp trivia contest is expiring the next day, and you don't want to lose it. Although it was lunchtime and busy, I was quickly and politely served. I presented the gift card upfront so they would know in advance it was being used, and was assured there wouldn't be a problem. Since I had $20 to spare, I decided to splurge a tiny bit, figuring I would end up with leftovers. I started with fried pickles, which were lightly fried in a nice batter, not overly thick but just enough to give them the necessary crispness. They aren't for everyone, and I don't eat them all the time, but it was a nice treat for a change. The entree consisted of one of their lunch sandwiches - I went with the brisket, the meat smoked to give it the proper flavor while maintaining its' moistness and tenderness. Although I usually prefer the vinegar-based slaw, their creamy version wasn't soaked in mayo or salad dressing, which is often the problem with some you find. I want to taste the crispness of the cabbage and carrots, as well as the seasoning, and on this occasion, I was able to. The baked beans were also flavorful, the sweetness playing off the smokiness. This is when my server advised me that I still had a decent balance left, leaving me enough to take home a small order of the honeyed wings and a slice of their popular buttermilk pie. (All of which I had for dinner with my leftover beans, fried pickles, and coleslaw). One final thing. Since my balance was $0 by the time everything was added up, I asked my server to advise me of the total charge before the gift card was used. I then had her scan my credit card in order for me to give her a 20% gratuity for a job well-done. She looked surprised and thanked me for doing that. It wasn't a problem. After all, she did an excellent job and I wasn't going to leave without giving her something, regardless of whether my order was paid in its' entirety by a gift card or not. Cyrena (our server) was the highlight of our two hour detour to try out this BBQ restaurant for dinner. The poor girl was beyond apologetic for the atrocities committed by the kitchen, and it was nowhere near her fault. This place can thank her for the two painful stars I'm donating to this review. I sent my food back three times: - The first time, it looked okay, but it was cold. Not just it-cooled-down-cold; more like refrigerator-cold beyond the surface of the meat. - The second time, I immediately sent it back before it hit the table. The meat was so over-fried and charred, you couldn't tell what it once was. Jerky would be considered juicy compare to what they tried to serve me (someone other than Cyrena attempted this and they were met with my "you've got to be kidding" laugh). I could only surmise that was a massive and blatant "eff-you" by the kitchen because it didn't even LOOK edible at that point! - The third time, My food arrived, new meat, but cold once again. I was too hungry to not take a few bites; I experienced lackluster, cold, unseasoned fried corn; delicious corn bread muffins, but no butter - only margarine; and cloyingly sweet buttermilk pie that tasted like sugar pudding on sugar, topped with sugar syrup. Yesterday, we decided to order from here and we both got pulled chicken. The chicken was tender, and the spicy BBQ sauce was delicious. I also got burgoo, and I was impressed with their version as it was loaded with vegetables. However, I noticed that Mark's didn't serve alcohol which I thought was odd considering they're located in the main drag of Bardstown Road. I honestly can't believe I waited so long to try this place. It had been sitting on Bardstown road for years with me passing it up. After a long day at school and bombing a test, I decided I needed some comfort food and I found it. My boyfriend and I dined here I believe about a month back. I had a burger, fries, and buttermilk pie. The food was phenomenal, everything was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend had what was boasted as "the world's largest pulled pork sandwich." He really enjoyed it, I thought the pulled pork was just ok, but I don't care much for pork. I didn't like the original sauce because it was mustard based, but the other sauces were pretty good. The dishes are served in a really cute little pan and the theme of the restaurant is consistent, which was enjoyable for me. We tried Marks( fc location) after a very long hiatus during burger week. It was phenomenal. Today was the last day of BackPack League with JCPS. The cheese on top was not even melted. And the mayo was in a packet. The fries were plain - I guess my fault I asked for not spicy. She enjoyed her wings - said they had a kick to them. First time here. Our server greeted us promptly and when we told him it was our first time he went through the menu with us giving us suggestions about what most people like as well as telling us about the sauces they feature. We both went with combo number 1 for all the flavors. It comes with pulled pork, brisket, ribs and their special spicy honey wings. Let me tell you usually I don't like sweet Bar-B-Q but those wings are something, maybe something out of a diabetic nightmare but they were great. The pulled lurk was tender and juicy, the ribs were very tender and flavorful, the brisket was just a tiny bit on the tough side but still really good. For sides I got the corn on the cob, which was a little over cooked, and the French fries that I got plain because I like my fries and they were worth it. The red barbecue sauce was our favorite so they gave us a bottle to take home as well as a free slice of buttermilk pie for free. That pie......so much sugar. I use to come here when I visited my friends in college at UofL. We stopped in for a late lunch driving through Louisville and we were served quickly and had two nice servers. Our table ordered sliders, sandwiches, and a lot of sides. The cornbread basket was sweet and warm and crumbly - so good. I got the brisket and burgoo plate and the burgoo had a ton of meat and great flavor with lots of fun veggies. The brisket was a bit tough for me but still had a great rub on it. They have 3 different sauces on the table and I honestly enjoyed all three. The original is a brown, caramel-ish sauce. The red has a mild kick but more of your traditional red/brown bbq sauce. The hot had a good kick to it and a bit thick. Fries are crispy and had good seasoning. Mac and cheese is so creamy and cheesy. I did order the red potato salad and although I reminded twice that I had not received it, I still did not receive it at the end of the meal so they took it off the bill. I really want to give a higher rating just because it probably isn't fair that I came to a bbq joint and didn't get anything bbq but I don't ever recall being terribly impressed with this location. I've been to the one in Indiana where I've written a glowing review on their service and food while handing a large group of people but this location leaves a lot to be desired in comparison. We arrived and told the hostess that we were a party of four and she said 5 minutes. Then she apologized and said the wait would actually be 30-45 because she had mistaken a group as just leaving when they in fact has just arrived. We asked for a menu instead as we were going to just order take out and she gave us one menu. After I asked her for another menu she was very hesitant in handing it over and I couldn't for the world understand why. I literally had to tell her to give me the menu. It was extremely odd. I liked the system of one person inside ordering at a time. It was nice that they had those precautions in place and the gentleman taking orders was kind, professional and efficient. Unfortunately the food was awful. I ordered the lemon pepper fist sandwich which the guy assured me it would be big as I originally wanted two pieces and just one order of the spicy fries. I also recalled the pieces being large from being at the location over the bridge. It wasn't very big at all, over cooked and not that warm considering that it should have been made to order. I asked for hot sauce and received bbq sauce instead, but it was a spicy bbq sauce. Maybe that's all they offer, but it would have been nice to know. The "spicy" fries were both a bad joke and an insult to any literate person. I asked for well done and they weren't. They were advertised as "spicy" but there wasn't any seasoning in sight! Remember the efficient guy from earlier? He asked how everything was and I couldn't even try to be coy, I just told him the fries were awful. Even he couldn't believe it and I requested the macaroni instead as I wouldn't eat the fries. All three of the others with me also weren't impressed and we ultimately threw them away (we aren't wasteful so it definitely hurt). The macaroni was a lovely stove top mixture. My friend ordered the chicken salad which portion size didn't even cover the surface of the bun smh. She also was very disappointed to see that her sweet potato fries were dusted in additional sugar. It was a bit embarrassing as she was visiting from Oregon and now questions my judgement on all suggestions from now on. I was visiting Kentucky for work and just had to get some BBQ. I heard that Mark's was good and of course confirmed on Yelp. Mark's is located in a cute, trendy neighborhood. The building is an adorable little brick building that used to be a gun shop, with an apartment upstairs. I came here after a long day of work with 8 of my co-workers. They were able to seat us immediately upstairs, no questions asked. We started with the fried pickles and the onion straws. Both appetizers were OK, nothing amazing. For my entree I had a pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries and fried corn on the cob. I was super curious about the fried corn on the cob, but it was a disappointment. The corn on the cob was soggy and didn't have that snap when you bit into it. My guess is that it was either over cooked or it soaked up the oil from the fryer. The flavor was not bad, but nobody wants to bite into soggy corn! The pulled pork was good, not the best I have ever had, but I definitely liked that they offered 3 very distinctly different sauces.
