I have been a delivery customer of the TU for decades. I live on a main highway w a long driveway…read more Have I rec'd every paper, no. I have even seen a lady up the road taking my paper before I could get it! I settle for E edition when the delivery doesn't arrive or is late, which is seldom. These complaints re delivery, cancelation are valid and should be addressed. Newspapers all across America and the world are folding and according to surveys it has nothing to do with delivery or content. Primarily it is due more to the 24 hr news cycle on cable and the internet. A population that doesn't read and is only interested in agreeable news doesn't help. Several "fact checking" sites rate the most watched cable outlet as the least reliable for truth in reporting, scary. Your problem will eventually disappear along with the "Free Press". When we moved to Albany my wife and I began to take the Times Union digitally as we felt we should…read morehave a reliable source of local news. However, after a few years we both cancelled it as we found little actual local news -- as most of the articles are quasi advertisements. Overall, it's a collection of AP articles, cartoons, and many many many ads. If you want to the local high school sports results it's a decent resource. I did find the periodic opinion pieces by Churchill interesting even if I didn't agree with 2/3 of his opinions (read both conservative and often mean) If you occasionally find an article of interest popping up in your internet browser you will quickly learn it's behind a paywall -- the Times Union isn't giving anything away for free. Last week I was particularly irate when the TU had sources of information about the abrupt change in Albany County primary voting polling stations but with no sense of public service the TU wouldn't allow non-subscribers to access that information. I define that as a total lack of commitment to the community. We take the NYT and unfortunately the Times Union handles distribution for the NYT, WSJ, and NY Post as well. When our papers haven't arrived it has been impossible to get through to anyone at the Times Union -- though I have spent considerable time drilling through their website for contract information. After NYT reps were routing complaints to the TU for months with no resolution, I finally had to write the TU and indicate I was filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Once I did that magically my delivery issues then vanished. Periodically the driver delivers the paper edition of the Times Union instead of the NYT in error. The paper edition is simply without value. Glancing through it takes about three minutes -- tops. It's articles focus on the sensational: thefts, fires, shootings, gruesome murders. What would want would be something about referendums and civic issues but usually that's nada. I guess the TU stays afloat from ad revenue. Occasionally a rare good investigative article is written but rare is the operative word.

The Capital Region is a better place because All Over Albany is in it…read more The editorial direction of this local website is always looking for interesting stories to tell about people, places, and things in the area. And not only that, but it has attracted a community of creative and curious people who truly love living in the area. Some of my favorite features are Deanna Fox's food finds every other Tuesday, and the Neighborhood Roundups of the best local blogs every Wednesday. Of course, I'm always hoping to see my own blog appear on that list. But it's great to see what others are writing too. AOA isn't afraid to go deep, and share nitty gritty details. It's not uncommon for the editors to share spreadsheets so readers can dive into data. And the AOA audience will do just that. Plus the publication hosts its own events, which are a blast. I only wish I could attend more of them. I will confess that the inspiration to organize an Official Yelp Event aboard the Dutch Apple came from missing out on the AOA cruise back from Hudson aboard the boat. Anyhow, checking out what is being written on the site is part of my weekly media diet. And I encourage pretty much anyone who wants to develop a deeper love for this place we call home, to check it out.

My wife is more old school and took me by here on a friends recommendation and as I entered the space I was transported to my childhood when I didn't have an iPad and Amazon wasn't around. I remembered how my love of reading was nurtured in places like this where I discovered Zelazny and Tolkien and Moorcock for the first time. Where I discovered a love for all things science fiction in books like Lucifers Hammer and the Uplift Trilogy. Where I read about any subject I wanted from the history of the black death to the Occult writings of Crowley, Lavey, and Starhawk. The used book stores of my day were the fertilizers of my imagination as a kid and I had in many ways forgotten, or at least allowed them to slumber like Rip Van Winkle until awoken anew by the musty smell and creaking floor boards of this new reminder. I remembered how so many of these books have been taken and then returned to in turn be passed on to future generations. It warmed my heart to know there are still places like this around that manage to make the business model work. I had largely assumed that they were all gone to be honest. The owner, Dan, was knowledgeable and able to assist my wife with some recommendations for new reads. If you go here be sure to ask about the purple bucks which are basically a a paper rewards program in the form of purple paper money you can spend at the store. Also, be sure to call ahead before going to pay a visit. Dan is semi retired and so the store could be closed. Especially on a Monday.
