Went here with a friend to shoot a gun for the very first time. Pretty cool place, the charge is per the lane so if there's two of you renting a gun, getting ear & eye protection, and a couple targets each comes out to be about $50. Not cheap but certainly cheaper than buying all that stuff yourself. I am glad they require hearing protection because it is LOUD. Do yourself a favor and get some disposable ear plugs to double the protection. Next door you can purchase ammunition which is nice and convenient especially if you're trying out multiple guns of different calibers. Definitely will be back again for a Ladies Night! read more

This place got worse each and every time I went there sadly. I first went there 10 yrs ago and met the owner, who looks like an evil version of Santa Claus, and it was okay. On each subsequent visit over the years the atmosphere, quality and price gouging got worse each time. The last time I went, the employee who walks with a cane took an immediate dislike to me for some reason and attempted to "punk" me into paying for damages he or no one else could prove was me (It was not btw). I went today to Marks man on 29th. I reviewed basic firearm with Rich the assistant Manager. He is an excellent instructor, informative,kind and very patient. I had taken a previous CCW course and Rich gave more information, and technical instruction then I could imagine. Given in a very clear way not to overwhelm you! He was amazing with range instruction positive reinforcement and suggestions really worked. It was my 2nd time to a range & handle a weapon. I will go back for sure for practice shooting. At first glance this appears to be a decent range. Multiple employees present and a reasonably clean range. The posted range rules are only there to keep the insurance underwriters placated. Absolutely no engagement by employees to keep patrons safe. I was stuck multiple times by ricochets from shooters discharging rounds into the floor and ceiling to include an impact to the throat and legs. When I brought the unsafe condition to an employee he said "that's just what happens," and laughed with a smug look on his face. If you do your job and pay attention to what the shooters are doing, it does not happen. This place has potential but employee apathy will keep me from wasting my money here in the future. read more

Their business hours state that they close at 6pm. Perhaps naively, we showed up at 5pm ready for an hour of range time. We were turned away because my shooting partner's attire was not within their policy. 'No tank tops, no short shorts". Ok. So we told them we'll go get a change of clothes and come back. It's now a few minutes after 5pm. We return with the proper attire at approximately 5:30pm and the store is locked. I look inside and 2 employees are cleaning and ignoring me. Eventually a third employee appears, unlocks the door and tells me that they are closed. "I thought you close at 6pm?" I asked. "Well, we stop taking our last shooter at 5pm. If you shot now, you'd only have like 20 minutes anyway." "So why," I asked, "Didn't you tell us that when you turned us away, and we told you we'd be back with a change of clothes?" He looked dumbfounded and said, "That wasn't brought up at the counter, sir." No apology or anything. Just completely did not want our business. These people are clueless. On a prior occasion, a shooting partner I brought was turned away because her shorts were too short. On both occasions, the staff told us, "the lady that owns the place is really strict." No problem. Excellent staff. Nice range. Helpful in all ways possible. Aftger shooting s could hundred round out of my new S&W SD9VE, I asked advice about my groupings, and suggestions to help me get my groupings better. They went out of their way to help, and made suggestions that helped immensely. They always have "eyes on" the range and were very attentive! Very Courteous staff, helpful, and a nice range! I walk into the range about 11:45, pay my range fee and pay for a target ($19.02) per my receipt this transaction was complete at 11:50. Get my ears and eyes on and make my way to a lane. Load my mags, hang my target, etc... I get through 2 or 3 mags before I get a tap on my shoulder, "Hey, we're closing in 5 minutes for a class...but you can come back after 2:00." So I pack all my gear up and chat with a guy at the counter and ask, why would you not have told me you would be closing in a few minutes before taking my money? All I got was an apology and the same statement, you can come back in 2 hours...I explained that I lived near Ryan Airfield, almost 45 minutes away. I expressed that I wasn't going to stay in town for 2 hours nor did i want to drive home and come back out. He apologized again...that was it...nothing more. As i was walking out I told him, what you really should have done is offered me a refund...he was quick to state all sales are final. I reiterated, you should have told me before taking my money that the range was about to close, at which time I could have made the decision to stay or leave. I wish I could say this was my first bad experience at this range but sadly it is not. I can say, they will never get another dollar from me. Bad business practices with management that has no idea how to properly run a business. I cant wait for the Hub to open up their indoor range...once Tucson has options for indoor ranges I see the Marksman going under...they have a horrible reputation in the gun community and seem to be completely unaware of it. read more

Four staff members were behind the counter when I walked in to an empty range at 10:00 on a Sunday morning. No conversation or good morning, just awkward stares from behind the counter. The woman working the front was unnecessarily unpleasant to customers as if their attempt at being pleasant pissed her off. She was more than just curt and blunt, but disrespectful and acting like we were not welcome. Really weird to be that antagonistic at a gun range that costs about $20 to reserve a lane. It made me very uncomfortable and made me question why I'm paying so much money to be there. I guess having the whole range to myself made it worth it anyway, and I'm guessing the customer service has something to do with it since the Regional Range off Harrison is always packed. read more

I had the same experience as several other reviewers here. I had been shooting here since the mid 2000's (I even did my CCW here when it was required) and I have purchased multiple firearms from them in the past. I finally decided to get a membership to support the cause and purchased a yearly membership in November for $285.62. I occasionally bring in my wife and pay separately for her and figured the membership would save me some money. I recently went in with her and was told I needed to pay an additional $5 per session to "keep up with inflation." I noted to them that I had signed up BEFORE that change was made, foolishly thinking that they would perhaps honor something retroactive for their valued, loyal members and waive the fee for individuals who enrolled before that change went into effect: no such luck. I was given an indifferent shrug and told to pay the additional charge. I would have went somewhere else that day but I really needed to test out the Glock 42 I had just purchased for my wife before she started carrying it to make sure it was reliable. I'm pretty annoyed. Not fair to change policy like that and enforce it on individuals who didn't agree to it when they signed on. So basically, I'm out almost $300 bucks that I should have put towards another firearm or membership to another place because I'm not returning and giving them any more money. It's the principle of how it was handled and not really good business practice IMO. It's times like this is when you truly figure out people and how they treat their customers. It's a shame, because with this current political atmosphere towards firearms, we really all need to be on the same team. FWIW, Pima pistol is a great range with membership fees of $165 per year ($75 one time application fee... still only $240 for the first year) and they offer IDPA, USPSA and other match shooting with very nice staff with US Veterans working there. Also, consider Southeast Regional Park Shooting Range which is $8 a day. That's where I'll be heading. read more

You never know what/who you'll get. Been long time members for years, but they pick and choose what rules they want to follow. Wife finally said no more (the female owner trained my wife too without problems). Pick a policy. Plus, the coming in to give your 2cents on shooting accuracy --not necessary, Just weird. The female staff member comes in sweeping behind me. Her pants were ripped and black thong hanging out begging for some hot brass-- thus, it hard to take these guys seriously. Furthermore, don't talk trash about shooters in front of other customers. Their mask policy violates all "exceptions" per governor's written policy. Being very concerned with the state of society and the increasing boldness of home invaders, I decided to finally do something about securing the safety of my family and take an introduction to firearms course here at Marksman Pistol Institute. I've never held a handgun before, let alone fire one. This course was perfect for me as it was geared entirely for newbies. I highly recommend taking an introduction to revolver class as you will learn not only gun safety, but that guns are really not scary. The facility is great and the staff is great. I followed up my course by using their coupon for free range fees and half off of gun rentals. I've been there three times, now, and this has been a perfect way to figure out which gun is right for me. I was really a greenie (still am), but the staff never was condescending and always helpful. They have clear rules to follow to insure a safe environment. I really like the huge variety of handguns they have available to rent. This really helps in the decision process. They have all the major brands and their various models. You will not have any trouble finding the right defensive weapon for you. They also have classes for various levels available and they have a separate classroom. This review is for both locations, one on Prince and the other on 29th Street. I've been to both and the quality of service is equally good at both locations. The axiom is true: When seconds count, the police are minutes away. My experience began with calling this place in the beginning of 2020 asking if they had the Sig p365 to rent, they told me that they didn't have it but they're working on getting it with the store owner. Fast forward to now I call again and ask if they have the p365, they still don't, okay it's whatever.. my family is in town and we want to try out some guns anyway. My family isn't the most experienced with firearms, two of which are from California but the intent and purpose of this trip to the range was to help them find a firearm they're comfortable with for home defense. Currently, I'm active duty Air Force, with 6 years of my time in as security forces. I'm no expert, never claimed to be, but I do have some experience firing through the military and firing with different ranges. That being said, this is a pretty standard treat everyone like children range. We arrive and right off the bat, two of my family members are told they have to change their shirts because their shoulders are exposed (they also turn you around for open toed shoes). I understand why, and maybe I overlooked something on their website or door sign, but I think it would have benefitted Marksman to disclose that on the home page of their website and if they have callers inquiring about shooting at their range, rules like that need to be disclosed to avoid inconveniences. I mean I get it, they don't know everyone's experience and they don't want to be held liable for any mishaps, but man.. I've had chiller experiences at the range in my time as active duty. My family wasn't out there doing anything wild on the line, but some employees were acting a little over the top here and there with anyone and everyone it seemed like. Most of the staff from my experience that day were alright, but there are a couple hard asses and the attitude there wasn't necessary. Then again maybe it wasn't someone's day. Regardless this place was fairly priced for the most part, the staff was okay, their selection for rentals is alright.. not very up to date, and you should expect to be treated like a child at the range (however that's pretty common amongst most ranges anyway but hey it's still annoying). With all the eh feeling towards this place I want to do a 3/5, but it was my first experience and I'll probably give them some more chances/business. I would like to thank Rich at Marksman Pistol Institute for being patient and just an all around awesome teacher... A few weeks ago my roommates (Who are all young women) almost got robbed and we had no weapons of self defense if he followed through. The next day we decided I would purchase a gun but I had little to no training. Murphy's gun store directed us to Marksman for a private class (ONLY $90 DOLLARS!!!) After several hours (that went by very quickly) of Rich informing us of gun safety rules and all the basics we needed to know, we went to the range. Two of my roommates never even shot a gun before but Rich was so patient with us and made us feel very comfortable. If you are looking for a teacher Rich is definitely the man to go to. This range is fairly nice, I was hesitant cause of the other bad reviews but after seeing it myself they couldn't be more wrong. The two individuals at the front were extremely nice and welcoming and explained the rules like a normal range you'd walk into. The lanes were in good shape, they also let me pick up my own brass, it's slightly humid in there but who cares it's not that big of a deal. Terrible, Has been for years, and never gets any better. They clearly know they're the only indoor game in town and they act like it. Air conditioning barely works, and doesn't work great when it does. Ventilation of fumes is practically non-existent. Staff is inattentive at best and pays almost no attention to what goes on at the firing line, sometimes to the point of compromising safety. I've personally seen people doing things stupid enough to cause me to take my kids and leave, even after pointing the offender out to the staff. 15 years in Tucson. Member for years, but finally let it lapse. I'm done with 'em. Rather drive to Tempe and visit C2 Tactical or just shoot outside. read more

My first time visiting this range was on a Friday about 2 hours before close at 8pm with a couple friends. One of my friends had been here before and recommended we try it out. The staff in the front office were very helpful, greeting us and helping us buy the items we needed (targets, range fees, checking that we had ear protection and eye protection). Pricing is very reasonable, at time of writing the price for a lane is 10 dollars, and 8 for another person in the same lane. We got targets that were 1.50 a piece, but they had a lot of other options. The guy helping us waited until we were all together then ran through the range rules and answered any questions we had and next thing we were out shooting. Actual range is not air conditioned, but the big fans definitely help a lot. We each ran through about 100 rounds, and time sure passes when you're having fun. The structured experience, rules and friendly staff definitely helped my other friend, who was nervous about shooting from a past experience. He started out nervous but after seeing that this was a very safe place to shoot he relaxed and had a great time. If you have somebody who is nervous about their first time shooting this is a great place to bring them. Lots of reviews stating the staff isn't helpful but they were very helpful and friendly in my experience. Their ammo prices are very reasonable for 9mm, (15.99 for 50 rounds) yes its a bit more expensive than some other places but they could be gouging you much worse if they wanted. If I return I'll be sure to buy a box or two every time just to support the place for giving me and my friends such an enjoyable safe shooting experience. read more

Awesome experience, to my surprise my daughter requested to go shooting for birthday. We reserved a private session for her and her 2 friends (13 years old). We did a safety course with Dave, who is extremely professional and not to mention very patient. After we went into the range and he continued to help the girls shoot and feel comfortable. All equipment was clean and well maintained. The staff is also extremely professional and helpful. Providing extra ear protection for the girls, along with handling a customer who was being unreasonable without disturbing everyone's great time. Can't wait to go back!!!! read more

Marksman is a good place to go to learn about gun safety or shooting training. A huge bonus to the courses they teach is the indoor shooting range, where you can practice what you've been taught. I had always wanted to learn how to use a handgun for self defense purposes. I had no experience on how to use a hand gun or about firearm safety, so I took a Basic Handgun Course for Women at Marksman. The four-hour course gave me basic knowledge of handguns and the responsibilities of firearm ownership. Our instructor, Barbara, was very knowledgeable, and she gave us many tips that were particularly helpful for women's self-defense. After I received the training, Marksman gave me a one-month free pass to use their range. I've been back a couple of times to improve my shooting skills. One good thing at Marksman is that they allow you to rent different handguns from them while you are at their range. I purchased a box of ammunition, and I was able to try out five different guns in one visit. This is important because many people end up with the wrong first gun because they don't take the time to do this hands-on research. A gun that's right for my husband is not necessarily the right gun for me. Marksman is different from other gun shops because most of them do not have the facilities to allow testing before purchase. The staff at Marksman was very friendly and helpful. They were invaluable in helping me select my first gun. On Wednesdays, the ladies' range fee is only $6.00, including eye and ear protection, a target, and personal instruction (if needed). They also offer daily range discounts to senior citizens, security and military personnel. read more

If you are inexperienced with guns like myself and my GF because we're from the SF Bay area where gun ranges like this just don't exist, period -- I suggest you ask for Rich and only deal directly with him. Rich is is a big guy with a gun on his hip but he's non-threatening, patient and actually has customer service skills. We came in on my birthday to experience what it's like to shoot a gun and was greeted by a totally underwhelming guy (don't know his name but he's younger and had short blond hair). Gave our ID and proceeded to ask some questions (having practically zero experience with guns) but all we got back was some serious machismo attitude and testosterone. OK so we got a revolver and we wanted some tips on how to use the gun we now have in our hands. Your basic "okay, what do we do now questions?" All he told us was "put the bullets in and start shooting" -- Wow, no shit Einstein. This dumb ass tip is like telling a 12 year old who wants to drive a car for the first time, "here are the keys, just start the car and drive. Bye." So we nervously walked towards the enclosed range.... Meanwhile, Rich was watching our complete inexperience go down from afar and told us to put our earmuffs on before entering the range as we were walking away. -- Once again, great tip for anyone who has never done this in their life. Because for those unfamiliar, inside the shooting range it's fucking loud. It occurred to me once inside the range that if they let people like me who don't know what the fuck they're doing in their shooting range unsupervised, then everyone else inside with fully loaded weapons could be in the same boat -- A recipe for disaster waiting to happen. Rich eventually came into the range to give us a session on how to hold, aim, fire, load the gun etc. (he was probably watching us through the glass and realized we were not kidding when we said we knew nothing about guns) So, if it wasn't for Rich, this place is lame because of the people that's on the frontline dealing with customers. Just too much "machoness" and lacking grey matter to understand and recognize that the novelty and inexperienced customer is the ideal target market to upsell your services and products. Plus the fact that it was my birthday that day! (One look at our IDs would have told you that.) We left without even finishing the box of ammo we bought from them. The saddest part is they actually have ladies day with big discounts for those born with double X chromosomes but lack the skill to know how to extract the money from people ready to spend it. read more

They kicked my fiend and I out after 10 min because my friend was putting his gun away, and the one guy said my friend pointed it the wrong way. He gave him no warnings nothing. And secondly the same guy said I'm lucky because he was about to come YELL at me for doing something wrong as well. When I told him that is horrible customer service to be yelling at people he told me I am not allowed back there ever again. So here is the deal with Marksman in general. You have to realize this is not a range where you go to learn, this is meant to be a basic range for people who know what they are doing and thats what they expect. There are no signs that say, "first time shooter? No problem come on in!". When I go to a range I come in, get my target and ammo, pay and walk in. Thats what this range is! If you have basic questions they will help you out, but if you want your hand held and taken step by step, don't come here. The staff does have a bit of an ego, I will admit, but nothing that is over the top. I come here, or the one on prince once a month or so just to make sure my daily carry is good to go, and keep the skills in check. Bottom line, if you know what you are doing, and want to just come and shoot this or prince is your place. If you want to be cuddled and walked thru your experience then dont come here. I decided to spend the day out of the record breaking heat here in Tucson doing something indoors and to the Marksman. I always enjoy a day at the range (especially indoors) and was looking forward to sighting in my new pistol. I guess everyone else in the State of Arizona had the same idea because the range was packed when I arrived. The staff quickly let me know that I was first on the list to get a shooting lane the as soon as one was available. Signing in was quick and painless as I've been there many times before and know the range rules that you have to review. Prices aren't bad and they do offer a military discount. The customer service area and the range could definitely use a refresh. The range itself is a tad out dated could use new furnishings, carpet etc but everything on the range functions very well and serves its purpose. I was very disappointed on this particular day because the temperature in the range was 92°and extremely humid! Several patrons and myself took turns standing in front of the large fans in the gun range in between shooting sessions because we were all dripping with sweat. As I said I've been here several times over the years in both the summer and winter and never experienced such a temperature extreme like this while shooting. Despite the hot temperature my range session went well, although I did cut it short because of the extreme heat. Hopefully it was an anomaly and not the norm in the summer months. read more

I was harassed by staff for my last name. I was told it wasn't real and when signing in I have to put my real name. Upon producing my AZ ID, Tribal ID and CCW they backed off. The staff member who told me my last name "wasn't real" then proceeded to tell me I miss understood him. I get that some people don't understand Native American culture and names, but don't try and make me the liar. I won't be going back. It's not the first time I've experienced rude staff. Went to the shooting range today and the guy asked if any of us were police, firefighters, emt (usually they stop here, but he went on...) nurses or *doctors. I said I was, and he asked for verification. I showed him my license and he started laughing, saying "Veterinarian? Do we give discounts to veterinarians?" I said, "Well I've worked with police K9 units if that helps." They looked to the manager who shrugged and said, "Sure." I'm pretty sure you'd get farther when you need me than a podiatrist, optometrist, psychiatrist, pediatrician, dermatologist, etc. Why would you thank them for their work and not veterinarians? Marksman on 29th, and the second location on Prince, are the only indoor public shooting ranges in Tucson. Other than the occasional wait because the lanes are full, I've never had any trouble showing up and shooting for a while. Compared to other ranges I've been to, and heard about from friends elsewhere in the country, Marksman is great because they've got affordable prices, I have yet to notice any gross unsafe behavior on the part of staff or customers, a VERY reasonable rental policy (must buy range ammo, can switch out guns within a given caliber for free). I've noticed some of the staff can sometimes be a little unfriendly in the store area, but ultimately I'm there to shoot, not necessarily to chat. This, combined with more complex FFL transfer requirements compared to other FFLs in the city, (must some in, pay half the $35 fee and fill out a form before they'll send their FFL out, though I believe you get a free month's membership when doing a transfer), as well as a small and relatively expensive selection of firearms for sale means the loss of one star for me. read more

I took advanced pistol defense courses here, and frequented the range while I lived in Tucson. My best guess is that I've been to the Marksman approximately 300 times. The staff is extremely approachable, and they seem to enjoy educating others about firearms. They have a wide range of pistols for rent, so it's a great place to go if you're contemplating a new purchase. The range was pretty clear the morning I came in. Our target fell and the staff came out with another on in a jiff. They were still the friendly professional staff i have come to expect from the Marksman Institute. I was shooting around with a friend trying to get them comfortable with the gun but with no real expertise. A man came and gave my friend some pointers which I'm sure they appreciated and got better groupings there on in. The classes are still good for anyone who wants to own a gun, they come with a one month range pass and that's good because the gun you practice with is the only gun you should defend with. Otherwise your likely to hurt yourself or someone else other than your attacker. Even at 10 feet I have seen people miss their target. In a real life scenario that is terrible. Practice, Practice, Practice and do it here for that comfy controlled environment with good help. read more

I have never been so disrespected at a place of business. "Chuck" is an employee that apparently likes to speak to woman like they are children. The entire staff was rude and made the entire experience unpleasant and uncomfortable. This establishment is extremely sexist. I'm the wife of an American Service Member and the daughter of a Law Enforcent Officer (both of whom were present.) When I stepped outside (to tie my hair up,) Chuck assumed that I had left the range because it was "loud" and "scary." He made condescending comments to me about my "inability" to handle the noise, comments I doubt he would have made if it were my husband stepping outside. I started coming here with a handful of my military gal pals. It is an excellent place and every time I go I have an awesome experience. It is good for those who have never shot a gun in their life, to professional pistol shooters who want a good indoor place to maintain their skill. If you don't own a gun, you can come in and check out a good selection of pistols for a flat fee, where all you need is a photo ID with date of birth. You will have to purchase ammo, which they sell as well. If you don't come with hearing or eye protection, you can rent some. If you don't feel comfortable with any aspect of shooting, the staff is friendly and fully qualified to help you anywhere from loading the gun, to aiming, to helping with difficult jams. They also have buying options if you want to purchase a pistol, holster or safes. Selection varies based on whatever is on hand. But you can purchase a gun online and have it sent to them. The staff is highly knowledgeable and can help you if you need advice on what to buy. Wednesday night is Ladies Night, where you get a lane, target, hearing and eye protection for only $6. It's the perfect opportunity to bring your girlfriend, wife, or just your girl friends to try something new in an environment perfect for learning. As stated in other reviews this is a no nonsense place. You get your lane as quickly as others are done. I happen to go when it was busy but by the talk of the gents who worked there it was similar to when a gun show is going on that day. Still, the staff was helpful. In fact I was having an issue with my Glock P19gen4 and a guy behind the counter stepped right up and helped me. He seemed rough around rough around the edges upon approach but was very helpful and kind. Good place to shoot. read more

I decided to go to Marksman Pistol and get a couple of rounds in since I haven't been to the shooting range in a long time. The guys that were working were really great in helping me select a pistol to rent and get spun up on the procedures and processes of shooting a weapon. The only downfall is that it was about $40 to rent a pistol, ear protection, bullets, and a target. I was not expecting it to be that much. It was a good time and I will probably go back with my own pistol next time and shoot some rounds. read more

I recently saw where Marksman Pistol Institute was openly opposed to AZ Legislation on Constitutional Carry (more than likely because it will take away from their training profit.) I plan on taking several training courses on Concealed Pistol carry as well as other Pistol proficiency and safety courses. Sadly, I will now be looking at other instructors and training facilities. Not sure what all the complaints are about unless the staff changed their attitude after reading all the complaints lol. All the guys and gals who work here are courteous, professional and very welcoming. Even when I accidentally popped one of their ceiling tiles I wasn't given too much of a hard time. We laughed about it and I paid the fee. Go in, shoot your brass, leave. $16/lane beats driving all the way out to Vail or Oro Valley. read more
