What every hardware store should be. I have never been disappointed. The staff is insanely knowledgeable and very courteous. They somehow have any weird part or tool you need. Just ask. It's REALLY impressive. Seriously, do not waste your time going anywhere else!! They aren't overpriced like you get at a lot of stores. You definitely will not save any money by going on-line or to huge warehouse store, so don't bother. Come here first and get in on the secret! Shout out: Kent had helped my on my last visit. I had arrived shortly before closing Sunday, because I thought they were slightly open later. Very thorough and cheerfully made me a couple keys despite the time crunch. I felt very appreciated. public service announcement. Do not under any circumstances get your keys made or your car keys here made. I would recommend you don't come here at all because the people are very unhelpful and unkind and do not apologize. No matter what they do. I've had a very awful experience with the key made that didn't work for my car after spending $100 . I was locked out of my car because my key did not work and I was stranded for quite a while until someone could pick me up. Apparently, only Brian can deal with these keys . I returned immediately to Markus supply, but I kept catch him on a day off. One time he was sick. One time it was his regular day off and this time it was a Jewish holiday. I no longer live here so trying to get here has been a great hardship for me. I'm going to try to call him tomorrow and hope that this pain can be rectified. The manager that stands in for him and another employee were most unkind and unapologetic and unsympathetic to my plight, though I remained calm and kind and did not raise my voice. If I am pleased, I will amend my review. But I stand firm that you should not get your car keys made under any circumstance.!!!! read more

I don't live near this hardware store. It's a bit of a grind to drive to here. And there are other hardware stores closer to me. But no matter what I need, I aways take the time and make the effort to patronize this place. Brian is the man who has impressed me with his down home demeanor and helpful approach to treating customers. But, everyone I've met at this store are helpful and knowledgeable. And if you have some time on your hands even the customers can be fun to engage with. I've had some customers ask me if I worked there! I go to Ace Hardware when I need expert advice and buy hard to find items! Quality/Quantity - Thanks for carrying a product that your competitors do NOT have!! Went to 3 hardware stores before coming here. Also gives me an excuse to go to Rosenblum winery, LOL. Atmosphere - Huge location. Open 7 days a week, see Yelp or website for specific hours. Plenty of private parking and street parking. Service - Best. Sadly they did not have the part in stock, but the manager, Jody, ordered it for me. Unfortunately I will be traveling the next two weeks, but he made sure it was not a problem and will hold it until then. Called me Wednesday and went out of their way to pull the part for me as they knew I was traveling starting on Thursday. I picked up the part Thursday morning with no problem. Thank you again! The store was pretty busy, I found Lisa in the back and she was so nice and helpful with finding the tape and giving me gardening tips. This is my neighborhood hardware store. It's really nice to have the convenience of being able to pick up supplies a couple blocks from my place. The customer service is always good. Prices are reasonable. Sometimes I wish they would stay open longer hours but can understand why they close at 5pm. This has been one of my favorite hardware stores, going back to the days when it was known as C. Markus Hardware decades ago. So when I read Matt W's review I went back to reread mine and to my surprise I couldn't find one. I had been back to Markus after it became an Ace affiliated store, but it's quite possible all my visits were before Yelp. I can't think of why/how my review would have disappeared otherwise. It's an amazing store w/ many rooms, one leading to the next, the staff unfailingly helpful. I can see it in my mind's eye, particularly the bathroom section, so it's possible we were there looking at cabinets and toilets when we remodeled our master bathroom in 2006. Our Toto toilet may very well have come from Markus. I love hardware stores like this and could spend hours if not days there! These days I go to Pastime in El Cerrito, Arlington Hardware in Kensington or, more rarely, Berkeley Hardware, all also affiliated w/ Ace. read more

Fantastic location, great customer service, and they had what I needed. came in for a replacement key for my Honda CRV. They could have charged me up to $180, but offered a much lower price alternative that met my needs. That is a sign of a trustworthy company. I've been in West Oakland for years, and somehow never stumbled onto this place. It's not a place that you would accidentally drive by, because it's slightly off the beaten path. I've been a home DIY customer for years, but decided to write this review after an exceptional service experience. The store is well organized and has all of the hardware essentials. Service is friendly. I prefer Markus Ace to Home Depot because I can park in front of the store, find what I am looking for, and be on my way faster than it takes to find a parking spot in the Home Depot lot. Today I was looking for very tiny machine screws to mount a computer hard drive. I had previously purchased a "screw kit" at a computer supply store in SF, but it turns out that none of the screws fit. I brought my hard drive in. Mario helped me find the right size screws. To call Mario a "people person" is an understatement. Here's the kicker: the screws were a tad too long. Mario offered to grind them down to the proper length while I waited! All this for a total purchase of less than $5. Customer for life! read more

If you've ever checked online to see if your item was in stock at the store and then found that when you got there they were out of stock or have never even heard of the product you're looking for... that's just a normal experience at Marcus Supply. Came here trying to help my friend make a copy of his key. The staff were so funny and entertained me while I waited. They were able to make multiple copies of the key in less than 5 minutes and costed only $10. Also told me that I can always get a refund/return if the keys didn't work out. read more

Not the most convenient Ace store for me, but on the Saturday I decided to start on a DIY drip irrigation project they were the closest one that had the kit in stock. There was only one kit when I got there, and I noticed that the box was open, but on a cursory glance inside it looked as if everything was there and wrapped, so I bought it. Only when I got home and started unpacking did it turn out that one packet of crucial parts was missing. I called back, described the parts that were missing, and they said they could get a new one here next Wednesday, but I really wanted to get started on the project, so Brian went looking and reported back that they had the individual parts or equivalents on hand. I went back, and we figured out exactly what I needed, and so they made good on the original purchase the same day. I could have saved 20 bucks on a $100 purchase by ordering the kit online from the place named after a big river, but I like supporting local retailers, and this kind of service is part of the reason. read more

Had not been to Markus Supply Ace Hardware in decades since I don't live nearby. However after fighting the congestion and impossible parking in downtown Oakland, it was wonderful to drive a few blocks to Markus Hardware and find abundant free parking right next to the front door. No need to walk a hundred yards like the Big Box stores, and no need to feed a meter like downtown Oakland. Instead I was able to walk right in, find what I wanted in a good selection of goods and get excellent and immediate help from a more than ample staff. Prices were also good. Next time I'm in downtown Oakland, and need some hardware item, I'll definitely go over to Markus again. Its like a "oasis" compared to the bustle and confusion not that many blocks away. read more
