They usually have everything we need. Today's quest was a door stopper, the kick stand kind. We found it by going up and down a couple of isles. Usually we see an employee soon as we arrive and are able to as them for directions, but sadly not this time. That is something I appreciate coming here is there is usually someone to greet you and point you in the right place. There was one gentleman that made a comment on my taking pictures, but he didn't have a vest on or asked if he could help me find something. They have added new signage in their parking lots telling you to move all the way forward so can pass you as the parking lot is tight. Parking is an issue at times as it's a small lot. We've had to park on the street before near their garden center. Overall this is a solid hardware store with usually easy to spot employees, that are happy to help you. read more

I wanted to share another positive experience with this helpful Ace : yesterday, I brought in my 20 year old chainsaw which I had never changed the blade on. While the guy in the tool section wasn't very helpful he did page Jeffrey from paint who came over and assisted me. Jeff from hardware came over to to give him a hand and the two of them went above and beyond -- Jeff even stayed past his shift to see it to the end. Jeffrey answered my questions on how to better care for my chain saw and got me the right oil too. They not only found me the chain put put it in for me and tested it before I went up to the register. There is no other hardware store for me! read more

They carry many types of plants that you won't see at your big box garden centers from annuals, perennials, vegetables and herbs, succulents, cactuses and more. Though I shop here for plants, they have soil, bark, pots, decorative items and more. I recently bought a Black cherry tomato plant and a Split Rock succulent. A truly horrible experience! On Saturday morning we went to Ace to check out buying a new barbecue. We parked on the side next to the store. Upon exiting car I moved toward the sidewalk leading to the store. Unfortunately the curb that usually prevents cars from going too far somehow was turned vertically and I took a major fall. I literally fell on my face...luckily I was wearing sunglasses (or not) so my eye was not injured. However I did get a major black eye and my teeth caused my upper lip to be majorly cut up. Also sprained wrist from fall. So yes, a really traumatic experienice. The guys who work in the back area were helpful and brought a chair and some paper towels as I was bleeding profusely. They finally brought an ice pack. The manager of the store came around and said he could inform the owner what had happened. I never heard from him so assume he did not know what happened. Now it is almost one week later and I did call the manager again and he said the owner called. I show no such call. I am very frustrated and hurting every day. and hope they have repaired this major trip and fall. Please know these trip and fall issues are especially important to seniors so consider going elsewhere. We now use Coles Hardware on College Avenue. We do have choices and we will certainly support them. read more

I have just been called "another sucker who bought Xmas lights" by an employee who said it loud enough so I would turn around and he could smirk at me, in front of another employee. I chose to go to ACE instead of Target or Home Depot to support a local business, knowing it would cost me more. I did not expect to be insulted while spending $90 this evening. I stayed polite, paid and left but they won't ever see me again. I am sure it was not his first time insulting customers, and other employees have witnessed it. read more

I try to go to this Ace because it's only neighborhood. Been here for almost 14 years. They often have the hardware I need. I like going there cause I'm "shopping local" which is good, and the staff are generally knowledgeable and kind. And... I walk into the store, pause for a moment to look at gloves, when I come to the main isle I'm asked if I need help as these women are walking between me and the guy asking. The 3 young ladies passing this guy in front of me assume he's talking to them and respond yes. It's like he didn't even see them. He points them in a direction and asks me again but when I realized what happened I decided to just walk around myself. I said no thanks, just shopping - which I was! On the other side of the store, a clerk appears, asks me if I need help first be peers at me from around the corner, then stays in the isle unpacking things and moving closer to me. I try to ignore him and actually find 3 things I was reminded I needed. A white guy comes into the isle, he's looking for something. He walks down the center looking, walks out the isle, comes back looking and he was not offered help. This is exactly what makes online shopping so much easier. It's not like this only happens here. It was much worse at another local "small biz" hardware store. Over the years I've watched white folks walk out with items while I'm being watched. What can I say? They will watch me every time, they are trained to do so. It's likely in a few days someone will respond with an apology and promise to correct their policy. Happens anytime I report on these instances. I don't like to disparage anyone so I often take it down rather quickly and just carry the wound until... I'm not sure how I'll handle the next plea. this ace (whether it's the garden or hardware section) has the magical ability to make me feel like a ghost. same for piedmont grocery. employees have a sucky, selective/cliquish customer service that reminds me of growing up in a small town. as in, if you're a long time customer, elderly or a WASP, you're going to have the better customer experience. as usual on my visit today, no one greeted me or asked if i need help. i did hear others being greeted though. i'd intended to buy plants for my office and only bought the tape i was looking for because i needed it. i hope to not need a reason to shop here again. the parking lot is always a costco sort of shit show and enough to avoid this place, even if the employees were nice. walking safely to the entrance shouldn't feel like a real life video game. read more

It's been a while since I've had this type of shopping experience, and I must say, it still leaves a sick tingling feeling. I wanted to spend my Saturday doing some car repairs and needed a 10 mm wrench to complete my task. I hit up Grand Lake Ace Hardware, approximately 7 minutes from my place, as I've done several times in the past whenever I needed a particular set of tools. Unfortunately, this time was unpleasantly different. I walked into the shop and looked directly at the aisle labels as I usually do when it comes to simple needs. Two men in the main aisle asked if I needed help as I walked past, and I answered, "No, I think I'll be fine". I found the sections where the 10 mm wrenches were and looked for the best deal. The wrenches needed to be unlocked, which, ironically, there was already a guy standing nearby who could unlock them and take them to the front for purchase. As I was waiting, an older guy came by and asked for the third time if I needed anything else, and "If I already had what I needed, in my pockets or anything". I replied to this man, "Yes, I've already been helped," a bit unsure about what he might have been suggesting, also just wanting to be on my way. The gentleman already assisting me got the $16 10 mm wrench unlocked and walked it up to the front for purchasing with the older guy following behind. Once we got to the front, the older guy took the wrench from the man and told him, "he's got it from here". I walked to the register, keys and wallet in hand, ready to pay and leave. The older guy asked me to empty my pockets. Confused and offended, I respond "what for?", to which he says "do you have anything, lugs or screws in your pockets? One of my employees told me he had seen you put something in your pocket, we have cameras so I can check those as well". This was really upsetting to have to respond to such absurd accusations being that eyes were on me the moment I walked into the store. As I'm emptying my pockets proving that I have nothing on me besides my wallet, keys, and phone, I'm asking for the names of those who suggested this. He refused to tell me, of course. He stands there after I show him all my empty pockets to watch me finish the purchase. In shock and anger, I watch the young lady ring up the wrench. I come to my senses and let her know, "I don't need it, thank you". I stormed out of the store and uttered the words ridiculous. It was a pretty quick encounter, but the unpleasantness lasted much longer. Long story to say, this place had no right to profile their paying customers in this manner. I won't ever spend money there again because of this sour experience, and I hope anybody who has a similar experience here would think twice before going back. read more

What a great store! I've been going here for years (and it's my dog's favorite store.. he literally pulls me inside to get a dog treat as we're passing by). My experience this week was so exceptional, that I finally have to leave a review: I showed up with 6 paint chips taken from my walls, hoping to match the colors to repaint after a recent whole-house electrical rewire and subsequent drywall patching. Jeffrey and one other gentleman (I unfortunately didn't catch his name!) in the paint department carefully scanned each chip, tested each color, and labeled each can. They were friendly, patient, and knowledgable. One of the colors just didn't match, so I returned to the store the next day with a new (bigger) paint chip from that area of the house, and they tried again. This time, they got it just about perfect. They even let me trade out my original color for the new one at no additional cost. There's no way I would have gotten this level of service at one of the other national hardware stores. Whenever possible, I'll be shopping at Ace from now on! read more

Great place to go if you actually need help finding items or have questions. They have an excellent friendly staff that always directs me quickly to all of my items. I have made at least 5 trips to the store and have always gotten everything I needed. The parking lot is small so often have to wait for a spot during prime hours. The hardware store is fabulous and well worth a visit, but this review is for the adjacent Garden Center just down the block. This nursery is not the largest around, yet the selection is quite good. It's enjoyable to walk around the outdoor area and see the array of plants they have in stock. I ended up getting a variety of tomato and pepper plants for my home "still in pandemic" garden, plus some flowering plants to fill in other garden spots around the yard. It's nice that they have clear explanations of each plant variety and generally the cost too. I also picked out some potting soil and grass seed. They are adhering to good COVID protocols and everyone, including patrons, wore masks properly. I like that I can use my no contact tap credit card for additional safety. Parking is tight as the lot is small but try the side street if all else fails. I generally find a spot open there. I enjoy the shopping experience at both the hardware store and garden center as the staff is very helpful and friendly. read more

This hardware store is between Oakland/Piedmont. This place is decently sized with knowledgeable staff members. Every section has a staff member who is able to provide suggestions to your issues. They also provide good recommendations and that is why I always come back. On weekends it can get a bit busier and hard to finding parking in the parking lot. The options/selections is not as much compared to other hardware store but most of the time it can allow you to get the job done for a bit higher price. read more

I thought I was just previewing to see what they had in stock. And within a few hours, a young man delivered the assembled grill to our house, and my husband and I are delighted. I come to this store with my elderly uncle who is a Vietnam Vet suffers from PTSD And is ailing and uses a walker/chair to get around. We usually go in about once a month and to be honest hanging out in a hardware store is a hoot for me. But the people at this Ace do things greatly different! This time a fella, James, greeted my uncle by name asked him if there was something he could help him with and shucks he became a personal shopper! Dishonorable businessman refuses to take responsibility for a $20 mistake and loses local client forever. I've been going to this Ace for 10 years and today will be the last time. After a junior key cutter mistakenly cut my car key blank to be unusable, he said I would need to come back on a weekday to speak with the Locksmith. So I lost a week of time trying to get back to see the Locksmith, hoping he would either be able to fix the situation or replace the key blank. This is not a $75 fancy modern key, it's just a $20 key with nothing modern about it. Frankly that shouldn't make a difference, but either way, the locksmith refused to take any responsibility for it and said it's their policing that it's not their fault if they ruin your provided key blank. I can understand there being such a policy, but if that's your policy then you should train your people to make VERY sure they tell customers that BEFORE they try to cut someone's key. I called back 30 minutes later to ask for the manager, hoping he was interested in being an honorable businessman. Turns out Eric the Locksmith is also the manager. So now I have not only lost a car key blank for $20, but because I can no longer trust this man to run an honorable business, I've also lost my only non-Home Depot hardware store. I've spent thousands of dollars over a decade of coming to this store to support small business but it ends today. I can't do business with someone who takes no sense of personal responsibility to make a customer whole after they've made a mistake. It's a small mistake but it's an enormous lack of character and failure of judgement. read more

I live in the area. This store has helped me sooo many times. The staff are always friendly, and knowledgeable. One example. My outdoor faucet burst and sprayed water non stop. It was welded to the pipe so I couldn't replace it. I had to shut my water off. The plumbing specialist suggested I replace the rubber washer. Took apart one of the faucets in the store to show me. And got me the right size. Problem solved! I have probably a dozen such examples listed above in the 16 years I have been here. read more

This is my regular hardware store, and generally I find the staff friendly and helpful, with the exception of some of the men who work in the back section with "serious" materials. This subset of workers acts as if you are wasting their time by asking them a question and they can be quite rude (or they have low social skills - hard to say). After today, I don't plan to shop at this store any longer. read more

Helpful staff! Everyone's friendly and checks up on you. I needed help w/ a particular home issue, and the staff member offered helpful insight for me. I also had to later make a return, and that transaction was smooth and hassle-free. I've only come here to buy specific items, but I did notice large, varied inventory and great prices. I felt tempted to buy a lot of things I didn't need. I like that there's a small parking lot! It can be pretty full and a little cramped, fyi. But it's there!
