You can access it from the sidewalk and sit behind the one sided marker on a nice shaded bench. It's a quiet town and that's just the way we like it.

FLOWAGE RIGHTS AND THE SACHEM…read more 1) This may be the only marker I've seen that talked about "flowage rights". 2) What is a sachem? I really didn't know so I just looked it up. It's a "great chief" of the Algonquin or other American Indian tribes of the Northeast. So the land on which this town stands can be traced to a sachem. This is a one-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission, with the familiar white lettering on a blue background. The marker dates to 1974 and is located on the front exterior wall of Town Hall. The blue paint and lettering are in excellent condition. The full marker reads: This area on the Shetucket River was part of the land deeded in 1659 by Uncas, the Mohegan Indian sachem, to form the town of Norwich. In 1786 it became parts of Franklin and Lisbon. Settlements were made at Hanover, established as an ecclesiastical society in 1761; at Elderskin's Bridge (Lords Bridge) and at Lovett's Bridge (Eagleville). In 1856 Governor William Sprague of Rhode Island purchased land and flowage rights on the river, laying the foundation of a large cotton mill which, completed after his death, become the center of a new town. In May, 1861 Hanover, Baltic, formerly Lord's Bridge and Eagleville, now Versailles, were incorporated to form the town Of Sprague Erected by the Town of Sprague and the Connecticut Historical Commission 1974

This is a one-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a…read moreblue background, It's located in front of the First Church of Christ on Main Street (between Gold and Pearl) in downtown Hartford. The plaque looks at the early history of our capital city. It tells us about the Hartford's first colonial settlement (1633), the 1636 arrival of Reverend Thomas Hooker and his congregation, how the city was named after the English city of Hertford in 1637, and how the Fundamental Orders (1639) is considered to be America's first written constitution. One interesting piece of trivia I learned was that from 1701 through 1875, Connecticut had two capitals - Hartford and New Haven. This was a very interesting plaque that had a lot of great information on it. It was dedicated in 1971 and still looks great.

It also tells us via a gigantic list what was manufactured here over the years. How about lumber, snuff, black powder, knives, pistols, cotton products, grist, buttons, nails, iron wire, paper, and clothes wringers. That's quite an eclectic list! Now be honest, did you know what grist is? I didn't so I looked it up. It's a processed grain that is ground into meal or flour. The Old Stone Schoolhouse, at Red Oak Hill and Coppermine roads, was a schoolhouse from 1790 to…read more1872. From 1875 to 1956, it was used as a chapel. The building is now owned by the Farmington Historical Society. Exhibits feature the history of Farmington and the surrounding area. It is open for tours each summer on Sundays during July and August. It is also the site of the annual Scarecrow Contest held in October.

Over 30 of it's sons rushed to Boston to fight the British during the infancy of the Revolution It's Meriden, CT- more or less half way between Hartford and New Haven where I-91 and I-691 and the Merritt Parkway all conveniently collide in the center of the state. This is a two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It can be found on a grassy area between both halves of Broad Street in downtown Meriden. It has different inscriptions on each side. It dates to 1976 and is in pretty good shape. The front side lists a time line of important dates in Meriden history. The back side describes how Captain John Couch of the Meriden militia led a squadron of three dozen patriots to Boston when hostilities broke out with the British at Lexington in 1775. The full two-sided inscription reads: 1661 - Meriden area first settled when Jonathan Gilbert is granted land by Connecticut Colony and employs Edward Higbee to operate an inn. 1670 - Greater part of present-day Meriden lands placed under jurisdiction of Wallingford. 1728 - Separate church parish, named after Gilbert's farm Merridan, is established by the General Assembly. 1806 - Meriden separated from Wallingford and organized as a town. 1867 - Meriden incorporated as a city. 1922 - Town and City of Meriden consolidated. Since the 19th Century Meriden has demonstrated itself to be a versatile manufacturing community. Its silver industry has grown to such proportions that Meriden is nicknamed the "Silver City of the World." You'll see it on the town green where Route 97 (Devotion Road) hits Route 14 (Palmer Road). The green also features a gazebo, monuments, and a memorial bench. The sign dates to 1979, and its in very good condition, with just some minor peeling at the top of the front side. The full inscription reads: In 1700 Isaac Magune purchased several hundred acres of hilly terrain in the town of Windham and soon named it after his native land. By 1726 about eighty families of English Puritan, Scotch, and Huguenot descent had settled in the area. Society, or parish privileges were granted by the General Assembly in 1732. The first Society meeting was held at the home of Nathaniel Huntington. In the preceding year Samuel Huntington had been born. This native son devoted his entire life to our state and to the young and emerging nation. He was a member of the Continental Congress, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a judge, and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Connecticut and third Governor of the state. In 1733 the first meetinghouse was erected. The parish secured a minister, the Reverend Ebenezer Devotion of Suffield. In 1735, the Revolutionary era was well supported by the Scotland Parish. Nearly every able-bodies man from sixteen to sixty volunteered and went to war. Many became leaders in the struggle for freedom. After a thirty-seven year effort to free the parish from Windham, Scotland became incorporated and held its first town meeting on July 4th, 1857. Small industries once flourished along Merrick's Brook, which provided the necessary water power. Agriculture has always been the predominant occupation since early settlement. An attitude of rugged individualism, personal industry, and independence has pervaded the hills and valleys of Scotland from the time of Isaac Magune to the present day. The Connecticut River - New England's longest is soo beautiful especially in the fall. Blue waters…read morewith the sun bouncing off at places like sparkles from a fire cracker, and the sides lined up trees with all possible colors of leaves except green ! But....We were a week early so missed the fall color enchantment....the river was beautiful nevertheless. Another interesting historical piece, all those railroad bridges along. Some of them are rusty and defunct but make a great location for a pic. We stopped at one such bridge to capture some frame worthy memories. The Connecticut River is called a " Blueway" and is known for connecting Canada all the way to Long Island. Also known for its biodiversity, scenic beauty, and historic importance for indigenous trade. There was a little local store with Native Indian artifacts like pots and stuff. The colorful shop just popped up out of nowhere, that is, until I read that Native Indians played a very important role in New Hampshire history and still, very much live in these parts. Bought a few trinkets to carry home and left on our way. The River and its blue stayed with me

The Connecticut River was my route to Shangri-La as a boy. My dad and I would take our 18-foot…read moreoutboard motor boat across Long Island Sound at its widest part from Mattituck Inlet and follow the river north. There were lovely little side tributaries we'd explore, including Hamburg Cove and a really intriguing unnamed jungle-like stream which somehow left the river and then came back to it, so turning back wasn't necessary. Gillette Castle, high on a bluff, was always a great landmark to look forward to. And every few miles an automobile bridge or railroad bridge would cross over our heads. The construction of these bridges was always fascinating, as you'd view them from afar before eventually motoring underneath them. The trip always required an overnight stay on land somewhere, usually with a docking at Wethersfield Marina in Wethersfied Cove. We never would quite make it to Hartford, because my dad said the river wasn't navigable beyond there and our nautical chart ended prior to the capital city. Now I'm a resident of a small city in Massachusetts which brushes up against the banks of the mighty Connecticut. Mostly a coincidence, except I know that I wanted to live in this region based, in part, on those wonderful youthful excursions. To this day I get a thrill whenever I cross the river on any of the bridges above Hartford. You see, I can look out the car window and examine what I never got to enjoy while cruising its waters on our boat! If it were only navigable beyond Hartford, it would be a cinch for that extra star!
