Worst service I've experienced in a long time at Pep Boys. Arrived at 8:20 AM for a basic tire change. After waiting for HOURS, my car still wasn't ready. When I finally asked, they told me they had just done ONE tire. That's beyond unacceptable. This place has no organization, no urgency, and absolutely no respect for customers' time. If I could give them 0 stars, I would!!! On Saturday, July 20th, we started to go from Harrisburg, PA to Bath, Maine. The car needed a jump in Allentown, PA. And we stopped at an AutoZone in Jersey City and they tested the battery, starter and alternator and said the alternator was bad. The guy said make it to Maine but as we drove further we decided to stop and we were in Hartford, CT. We stopped at the Pep Boys and they said they would get us in and it would be 4-4.5 hours because they had to get the part to the facility. We ended up being there for 7 hours and told several times the job was over halfway done and then an hour later told it hadn't started. Getting very conflicted information. So at 6:15pm they said the car was done, and we went to get in and all the lights on the dash were lit up. We asked why and the mechanic swore that they were on when we pulled in, and we know they weren't but the mechanic also did not complete a CVI which is required according to the manager. The manager tested the car and said the lights would eventually go off once we drove a little but was incorrect, they remained on. This job cost $904 and some change. We trusted him and left with the lights on and drove to Maine. We didn't get to Maine until 11pm and Pep Boys and Honda were closed Sunday. On Monday we visited Pep Boys in Auburn, Maine because of all the lights and he ran the codes on my car and 2 were logging at permanent and he was unable to locate a CVI or any info about my car in the system. I went again on Wednesday morning to get a print out of the codes and they did a CVI and quick inspection to find out my alternator was not.plugged in. He plugged it in and the lights went off. I have been calling Pep Boys and have not received a call back from their field manager since July 29th and I have over 20 phone calls of me trying to ask for a call back logged on my case. On Sept 21st, I was driving and my car shut down again while at a gas station. Luckily, I have AAA and they jumped my car but didn't have the right supplies to test the alternator, just the battery. They said my battery was testing in the green which is great. I went to the closest AutoZone (considering I was over an hour from home) and they tested my battery, starter and alternator and they tested fine except the alternator. I went to two different ones after and they all said the same things. I have the printouts as well proving this. I do not have the light on in my car but it was running okay, but I did keep everything unplugged and lights off until it got dark. We tried to go to their headquarters down towards Philly, and found out it is a mailbox. Not even people in the building knew that it was the location of Pep Boys or how to get there. No one seemed willing or wanting to help. I called our local Pep Boys and they said they do not do alternator checks or changes and will not touch my vehicle. At this point I didn't know what to do. I have called Pep Boys Corporate several times and every time I would call, I would receive the same line "We are setting this as high priority and a supervisor will call you within 24-48 hours." I have never received a call till this day. The last call I received from them was July 29th. Fast forward to today, my car is now completely broken down in a Pep Boys parking lot in York, which is over 30 mins from my house. It is still under the warranty of the alternator getting done so I was hoping to at least get it looked at again and now my car won't even turn on. It is sitting dead in their parking lot and my battery isn't working either. They said that a remanufactured alternator was placed in my car, and that Honda's only take Honda alternators. So they have to order the part and I have to pay the difference and possibly pay for a new battery on top of everything else I have already paid for to your company that I CAN'T AFFORD!!!! I have been trying to simply just get a field manager to call me back and discuss the issue with me because I have paid almost $1,500 so far into this issue when it should have never cost me this much. I have also wasted over a week's worth of time at different Pep Boys locations having people look at my car, seeing if they can fix it, checking it, or it being shut down and waiting for someone to come jump or fix it. All because one mechanic wouldn't admit a job was too much for him to handle. If my car would have broken down on any major highway in Maine, with my son in the car we could have been seriously hurt. We had no service most of the time there so we would not have been able to contact anyone and all my lights were one. read more

I spent 4 hours on Saturday waiting for my car to get fixed. I drove away from Pep Boys with the same light on which I had when I came in. The Pep boys worker indicated that the car needed to be driven for 25 miles to re set. I drove the 25 miles and light remained on. I returned ba k to Pep boys as advised by Pep boys manager at a designated time and was told I have to wait 3 hours in order to get my car fixed. I paid over $600.00 for lowsy service and poor customer service. read more

Go somewhere else!!!I dropped my car off yesterday morning because the check engine light came on. I got the code from autozone and gave it to them. I dropped it off a little after 10am I never heard from them at all. I called at 5:30pm to see if they had figured out anything and they said all it needed was an oil change. Well oil changes don't take too long usually. I called again before they closed and they said they would call when it was done. Fast forward to the next day and we hear nothing. I called them at 10:30 as it had been a full day to have the car for an oil change. The car was done and just sitting there. Done last night but no one called to say anything. The check engine light was still on when I got in my car. The mechanics didn't clear it and we sat there for another 10 minutes for them to come get the check engine light off my car. 200 dollars to tell me I needed an oil change and possibly the world record for slowest oil change. Where do I start? Went in for an oil change and according to the manager one of the mechanics walked into my drivers side mirror and "popped" it off. He admitted they damaged my car and stated that they would fix it, even if they had to order a new part from Lexus, he put this in writing. It is almost a month later and I am still trying to have this fixed, not one of my calls to the store or corporate has been returned, ever. Took my Wrangler in to have brake work done, and while there, wanted them to run a diagnostic so they could do all the work to get it fixed. During the diagnostic, some idiot there decided my custom wiring to my HEADLIGHTS was a reason not to work on the ENGINE OVERHEATING, which is what I was concerned with. I replaced my radiator fan in a pinch last year because I was overheating, and the replacement was not OEM, but *ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ON THE BLOCK/RADIATOR SIDE WAS MODIFIED* and *I SPECIFICALLY TOLD THEM I WANTED TO REPLACE THE FAN AND SHROUD AS WELL* There is *ZERO* reason for them to refuse to work on my Jeep because of custom headlight wiring. This was a major inconvenience for me, and I'll be leaving 1 star reviews on Google, Facebook and the Better Business Bureau, as well. Anthony, the guy I've been in contact with, has been great. It's his assistant manager who needs replaced, and they should really look at Anthony to replace him. What is the purpose of the appointment confirmation? On Labor Day, We drove to Berlin to have the tires installed, waited in line to check-in, and returned home because the tires were not there. All total, one and a half hours wasted to not get tires installed on the vehicle. Clerk at register said he had no control over the tire shipment and they should be there if we come back tomorrow. What do you think are the chances of that happening if he does not know where the tires are today? I do not need another appointment confirmation if the tires I ordered are not going to be at the appointment. Costco notified me of receipt of tires and confirmed appointment twice. They are more about overcharging their customers. Which is what happened to me. I went in on March 23rd for support with my back light bulb. They said it was fixed and I paid the cost. I live seven blocks from their location and my light went out by the time I got home. I called to bring it back and they asked me to come on Monday. I shared that I had to work on Monday and they told me to come in on Sunday. I arrived at 9:00 am on Sunday and they told me they would have to order the part for my vehicle and it should be in on Tuesday. We took the vehicle back on Tuesday and they shared the part didn't come in and to check back on Wednesday. Needless to say, the part came Wednesday and I expected to pay for the part, but not the labor, AGAIN, after I had paid for it the first time and the work was not repaired. What is the point of being able to schedule an appointment online if when you arrive only to find out that it's not a real appointment, or at least that's what i was told. I walk in to the West Hartford location today at about 5:10 for a 5:30 appointment and immediately the person behind looked at the time as if me coming in was a disturbance, then it took almost 20 minutes to get called to the window. Once at the window I was asked what I was there for and again the time was looked at, when I told them I was there for an appointment I was told that they didn't have any appointments for 5:30 so I showed my confirmation, that's when I was told that the technician was gone for the day and that If i book an appointment online that I shouldn't book anything after 4:00 because there is no guarantee of arriving for my appointment and the technician still being there. Then proceeds to laugh about it like it's life and things happen. So disrespectful. I could understand if he said he apologized for the inconvenience and found something that worked but he didn't even attempt to keep me as a customer and schedule another appointment. Passenger headlight bulb was blown on a Mazda 6 11'. Called them up for cost. Was told because they would have to go under the wheel and that they would have to charge me $140. I had slow leaks in two tires and came to get them fixed. My own mechanic had already diagnosed them as bead leaks, and I said so. Pep Boys told me there was a nail in one tire and couldn't find the other (there was no nail), that the tread was too shallow to repair (false), and that I'd need new tires. Also tried to sell me a new suspension for several hundred dollars. I told them to drop the car, and I took it across the street where they found and repaired both bead leaks for free. read more

Pretty solid experience at Pep Boys earlier today. My car needed some general maintenance and I needed to pick up a few items (new wipers, etc) so I dropped it off around 2 and ran some errands in the meantime. I was able to pick up my car about an hour later, which is a completely reasonable timeframe for some small repairs. While services aren't cheap here, they're not as expensive as I've seen elsewhere, and the staff do indeed try to upsell services and products that aren't entirely necessary (no thank you sir). Otherwise, the employees I encountered were friendly and helpful. In the event that my regular mechanic is too busy to have me stop in (like today), I'll definitely bring my car to Pep Boys again. read more

Aw dammit... I can smell it. I'm burning oil... Check the dipstick, it's bone dry... Throw a quart in, it's gone 18 hours later... I can feel it. This is the end of the line. 175,000 miles and no more. Images of a $500 car payment on top of my student loans and credit card debt... *Violent shaking* "Wake up dude, it's fine! You just had a bad oil filter and a busted drain plug gasket!" *gurgle* What? "It's all good, man. Oil was burning because it was leaking out of the filter and burning up on the exhaust... Don't worry, we're just gonna charge you for an oil change and a new gasket. It'll be like 35 bucks." The hallucinations and nausea stopped instantly. I was saved. My car was saved. My finances were saved. And these guys brought me back from the seventh circle of automotive hell... I know, it's Pep Boys. But a garage is as good as the people working there, and man was I impressed. Engelbert, the man who runs away with the "Best Name Ever For an Automotive Technician Award," was happy to take me under my car to show me the problematic oil filter and gasket. Chris, the man at the counter, went into incredible detail to explain an additional small issue with my car, even drawing a sketch to illustrate his point. I thought I was on the hook for 4 digits. I walked out for the price of an oil change, an air filter (which incidentally needed replacing), and a drain plug gasket. $56.56. The people are good here. That's what matters most. read more

I waited for almost two hours looking outside at my suv which had the hood open to stimulate someone was working on it but everytime i looked no one was doing anything to it. Ok, so I believe you know the true character of a store when the place is slammed. Although the service I received from the people I interacted was fine, I am completely disappointed in how long it takes for my car to actually get serviced. My car sat idly in the parking lot for 52 minutes before it was brought into the garage. Mind you this is with an appointment. I feel like I'm on that episode of Seinfeld where he had a reservation for a rental car, but there were no cars for him. As I waited, I made laps around the store. The employees looked uncomfortable as I did this, but I would be uncomfortable watching someone make THIRTY SEVEN laps around the store. I am currently in the Pep Boys' parking lot. I came in for a new car battery, easy, 15 minutes, they don't charge for installation, in and out. I was on a time budget today so I made sure to make an appointment. I am now here, 1 hour and 45 minutes later, having missed all my appointments this afternoon, getting my car returned to me. I asked for a battery w/ at least a 3 year warranty and the woman working the counter said she didn't know if she had one but if they did she would let me know. As I waited, I checked the store's website on my phone and there was a battery that fit my criteria for $105 that was in stock. I thought "great, she'll call me up and offer that one and I'll say yes." When she did call me back up, again, an hour and 45 minutes later, the battery was replaced with a battery that did not fit my criteria and was more expensive than the one I wanted. They also charged me about $8 for labor even though the installation was supposedly free. Very upset and disappointed. read more

The reputable car washes, garages, and overall auto enthusiast venues are few and far in between. Thus, when you go to a run-of-the-mill place and get extraordinary service, it speaks volumes of the business. That is Pep Boys in West Hartford in a nutshell. They may not be the biggest, but they certainly have a lot of the essentials at a reasonable price. They also rotate and switch out winter/summer tires for free. Albeit, I drive one of those finicky European GTs so I do not buy parts or get more extensive service here, but I would suspect that if you call for that, the service and quality would be excellent. read more

I'm not a car guy, and in the past when I have needed parts or maintenance on my car done I have asked friends or family for the most reliable place around. I had just moved to this area however and to be honest I only went to this Pep Boys because they were the first place on the street. I needed a head light replaced and didn't really know where to find the bulb and how to install it. The car dealership seemed like they were quoting me a way higher price than was reasonable so I figured I would check out a place like Pep Boys to see what they offered. They were crazy busy there, but after a few minutes in line I was able to talk to one of the service managers, Edward Serafin. I could talk about how professional he was despite how busy they were, or go on about how he was able to get me the best price of anywhere I checked, but I will keep it brief and say simply this. I will be going back to this Pep Boys specifically because of Mr. Serafin. He took the time to explain to me my options, and actually walked out to my car with me from behind his desk to make sure the make and model were correct for the type of bulb I needed. It was quicker and more painless trip than I had ever anticipated and I could not be more grateful for it. I would recommend this Pep Boys, and specifically Edward Serafin, to anyone with auto questions or repair needs. read more

Made a reservation at 7am on-line this morning for 10:00am. At 9am, I got an email asking if I'd like to reschedule because I missed my appt, which makes no sense. I called them and they said that they had the appt at 10:00, no one cancelled it. I got there at 10:00 for a leaking tire which I thought needed to be replaced. After waiting ONE HOUR AND A HALF, the guy asks me which tire it is!! With an appointment, it took 2 hours to get out of there. Totally a joke. The guy at the desk was very polite and apologetic and he explained that the reservation system loads up 6 people per time slot, regardless of the staffing at that time. He did end up not charging me for applying sealant to the leaking tire, and writing on the receipt that I could have a free oil change. Like I would ever go there again. Summary: TWO HOURS wait when I made an appointment in advance. Follow Up: After leaving, I noticed the inflation warning light was still on. They never even checked the tire pressure after replacing the tire. I went to a local gas station, added air, and the light went off. read more

DANGEROUS place to fix your car especially for brakes!! AVOID at all cost! IRRESPONSIBLE jobs ! Complaints about bad jobs get ignored by management, & complaint department after they asked me to file the complaint. No reliability at this place of business. those who has good ratings on yelp for this business were few lucky ones who did not had to endure danger to their cars. This place is a hit or miss ! After brakes got done at this location, next day our car started to make loudest noise and brakes seemed shaky while on Highway 84E. After returning home from half way on highways found out lug nuts on wheels were absent, If we had kept going on highways Wheels would had been fallen off. My kid was in car so turned around. Returned to shop found out all lug nuts were forgotten to put by mechanic. So they put it up, We paid $460 and we had rebate. Asked for labor we were charged for damages and irresponsible, unreliable, dangerous job done and had probable rotors damages caused due to grinding since all lugs were not put by pep boys. Manager refused by saying they put back the lug nuts, when we returned next day and took no responsibility for putting our lives in danger! Email to pep boys were not returned after they asked me to file complaint report. Very dangerous!!! if I did not know about car. I will never returned to this shop for any of my family or friends cars. Complaint to manager and company were not taken seriously. I live close by but will go to MIDAS, Good year, Meineke on New Britain Ave, but do not recommend this place to anyone.
