We enjoy taking a scenic afternoon drive on the North Fork. I have found it can be a challenge to find a simple place for lunch that's not too "fast food" or too fancy. We randomly selected The North Fork Shack. So glad we did and I'd go out of the way to visit again. Here's a quick opinion: the food was excellent! We had chicken sandwiches that were so good a simple lunch now makes one of the top lunch places we've been to. The chicken was deep fried perfectly, the slaw was home made as was the pickles on the sandwich. I also had a can of beer and the price was fair for our meal. The ambience was plain and I'm not critiquing some fancy anniversary dinner. I'm just saying this is a great place to eat and I had to give them a shout. read more

I really want to like this place- the staff is friendly and the outdoor seating area is lovely. I've attended events with food from their catering business in the past and thought it quite good, so I was surprised to find that the food here is mediocre. On a recent visit I had the pulled chicken Greek bowl and a side of corn. The produce in both cases seemed very fresh, but the preparations were- if I'm being honest- bland and uninteresting. The pulled chicken was on the dry side and under-seasoned to the point of being almost tasteless. The included sauce was not enough to offset this. This place is a hot mess - avoid it at all costs. Ordered online for pickup as a quick stop on our way to the ferry. Of the three cheeseburgers we ordered, only 2 were in the bag, and 1 was totally raw. Had we done what we originally planned and just grabbed it to go we would have been SOL. I have been going to this restaurant since it opened about 7 years now. Last couple years they have been offering themed dinners for 2 at very reasonable prices, currently at $60. The last one we had was the Mediterranean meal which included leg of lamb, zucchini and butternut squash, eggplant dip, fennel salad with grapefruit and bacon and cantaloupe with feta and mint. The lamb was cooked perfectly at medium/rare, the vegetables were seasoned just right. I liked the fennel salad but wasn't crazy for the bacon. But all in all it was amazing. This is the worst place I've eaten in a long time. I got 2 fried chicken sandwiches and a mahi sandwich the mahi sandwich was the size of a slider and almost 20$, barely any flavor. The chicken sandwiches were so ridiculously soggy that my finger literally went through it. This place is 2 hours away from where I live and I only stopped in because it was near a job, had I known I was going to spend 70$ on a kids size fish sandwich and 2 chicken sandwich soups I would've waited the 2 hours. The food is just unbearable mediocre and overpriced. The fish sandwich is $17, and is hardly edible - plain, white seeded bun, not even properly toasted, a slice of supermarket tomato, a piece of romaine, and dry, overcooked fish with some sauce. It's not even served with fries. The fact that they use mahi mahi rather than a local fish is a huge red flag. Yesterday I was out east with friends visiting the wineries. We had researched places for lunch . The North Fork Shack had received wonderful reviews so we decided to go there for lunch . To our great disappointment they were closed . On their website it clearly states they are open on Wednesday. There was a sign on the door saying they were closed for a family function . I understand things do happen but a family function is a planned event so maybe they could have posted something on their website . Five star!! Don't miss this gem. The food is excellent and staff super friendly. Once a month there is a theme take out meal. Last night was Jamaican themed. The chicken jerk thighs were absolutely delicious. There was the perfect heat to the spice which was easily cooled by the fresh mango salsa. I don't know how the fried plantains were so perfect. Lightly crispy on the outside and full of flavor. Then there was a side of sliced sweet potatoes and rice and black beans. If I lived here I would never miss the monthly surprise meal. I love the casual atmosphere of the shack and how they offer numerous local ingredients to please all sorts. The menu scribbled on the wall boasts lamb sandwiches, vegetarian wraps, healthy fare with a low key beachy and casual feel to the interior. There are large, welcoming tables waiting for your hungry bottoms to enjoy both inside and out. The North Fork shack is super cute, however, ya can't eat the decorations. There were a few misses with my last visit: The avocado in my SLT (shiitake mushroom, lettuce tomato!) was hard as a rock. Not ripe. I grunted and picked it out. Darn -- I was really craving some creamy fresh avo! Otherwise, it was a tasty, well rounded wrap. I've not eaten fried shiitake quite like that prior but wouldn't mind consuming my shrooms this way again. Buffalo chicken wrap was flavorful however the meat was on the dry side and probably overcooked. The coleslaw that came out with both was way too sour + vinegary for this gal. The person who took my order either did not want to be there, or wasn't quite fond of me. I certainly don't expect everyone to smile and hug me (especially after how sweaty I was that day, GA-rooooss) but at least extend some sort of pleasantries. We decided to visit The North Fork Shack again after seeing them featured on the news. So glad we gave it another try! Very friendly and mindful of the COVID environment. Only 6 customers are allowed inside at a time, and there is only outdoor dining. The plantain chips and eggplant hummus were a wonderful pairing that we had tried before and wanted again. I also had the SLT wrap: shiitake mushroom version of the BLT, except with mushrooms instead of bacon, and the addition of avocado with lemon-garlic aioli! Spouse got the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich which was also enjoyed. Perhaps the most memorable part of the meal--and which will keep us coming back, even just for this--was the Hawaiian Shave Ice! For $5 you get a huge snow-cone-type dessert for fluffy/flaky shaved ice and your choice of up to 3 flavors! We got Cherry Coke, Tiger's Blood (strawberry colada w/ coconut flavor), and Yuzu (a sort of mandarin orange flavor, which was natural with no colored dyes). Nothing impressive on the outside but full of good stuff inside. So what's good inside the shack ? Everything I tried ! And it's vegan friendly. Since it's Long Island, I tried the local fried fish sandwich. It was perfection in my mouth. Slightly blackened, perfectly seasoned, served hot & fresh. The Old Bay Tartar sauce was good too. I really enjoyed this sandwich. I bet the fish tacos are good too. For dessert, I snagged the last vanilla cupcake. On the outside, it looked plain & uninspiring. But upin the first bite, I knew, this was no ordinary cupcake. It was delicious. And I loooove cupcakes. And buttercream. I have to have great buttercream. I brought my son here after a day at Kenney's Beach. I ordered the SLT with coleslaw, my son had the spring rolls and clam chowder. We forgot to order the shallot dusted fries. I really wanted to like this place but the food was really disappointing, especially for the price. We got two fried chicken sandwiches and it was all dark meat with tendons, no white meat, and really oily. I've had fast food chicken sandwiches that were a hundred times better. The fish tacos were blank and flavorless. The thai coconut curry bowl had so much potential but it was also flavorless. We had to add salt to it. It seemed as though it was too much coconut milk and not enough other spices. The bill for 6 people was over $200 dollars which I would expect to pay for good food, but we all left feeling really disappointed. Truthfully, just OK. The last few times we've ordered the wait time to pick up is horrendous. This past week we ordered 2 taco specials. 45 minute wait time. And then when we finally receive our order it is cold. Cold Tacos or hamburgers are not my thing. Having to warm my order up in the microwave is just disgusting. I live less than a mile away. I drive there. I shouldn't get cold food. Also, I don't think they make the regular French Fries on premises. They taste like the frozen kind that are just warmed up. They are a waste of $4.60. On my last take out this Saturday night I found out the reason behind the always out of my favorite dish the grilled calamari. I was lucky enough to speak with Samy the co-owner and find out why this happens. According to Samy they only use fresh calamari from Southold fish market. They tried the frozen version and it's just not up to par. Nice to hear that they only use fresh ingredients and won't settle for less. I did learn the secret to catching the elusive calamari dish but I will take that secret to my grave:). The other dishes that we ordered, fish and pulled pork tacos and local fish sandwich were very good. Shallot dusted fries as always were excellent and addictive. Literally a shack but once you see the menu and talk to the owner, you realize that this place is more than a simple snack shack. This ids simple food, expertly prepared. We had the House special Reuben and a marinated skirt steak sandwich. Neither of these merely sandwiches. The flavors and textures were extraordinary! Small but quality beer selection. We took the time to talk to the owner(?) who was charming and took the time to explain herassa aioli dressing on our steak sandwich was very common in his native Morocco. Literally looked like it was thrown in the wrapper - ordered two chicken tenders. One was good and as per our 11 year "best chicken tenders ever" but the other order was more breading and had more yellow (which im assuming was fat) than meat. Our 13 didn't touch it once she saw that yellow part. - the other fried chicken sandwich was overly fried and more breading than chicken * burgers don't come with fries. Stopped by the shack with my fam on the way out to shelter island. I liked the quick and friendly service and rustic feel. They offer a variety of food options, cocktails, beer, and wine. We ordered the calamari salad, clam chowder, fried fish sandwich, SLT wrap, and a gin cocktail. The two standout dishes were the SLT and fried fish Sammy. The shiitake mushrooms were crunchy and flavorful, and the sauce in the wrap was the perfect tangy accompaniment. The fried fish sandwich (cod today) was crispy and cooked to perfection. I didn't love the calamari, I felt that it was a little oily and I like my squid without the purple "skin". I wish the Sandwiches/wraps came with fries instead of just coleslaw, but that's just me.
