Stop buying all of those straightening products! I have a secret for you and her name is Marni. If you knew me a year ago you would not even know that I had curly hair. I was a serial straightener. Everyday I would fry my hair by blowdrying and then flat ironing. I spent tons of money on all sorts of hair product to hide my curlyness and spent close to an hour everyday on my hair. Then I had a baby...and I did not have that extra 60 minutes every morning to spend straightening. I decided, after all these years, that I would try to embrace my curls and I am SO happy I did! Marni is a curl master. She is trained on how to properly cut a head of curls and she is an expert at it (not only that but she is a curly girl herself!). Instead of a "normal" haircut your hair is cut curl by curl dry. But before she even starts cutting she analyzes your hair to figure out what cut/products/wash will work best with your hair. She is like a curly hair scientist! Not only does Marni cut your hair perfectly but she shows you how to properly do your hair at home. Marni also does color. My hair was so washed out but I really didn't even know where to go with it. Marni applied the PERFECT color for my skintone and it looks a million times better. Marni has her own little shop in the Salon Sola complex. It is super cute with a curly hair specific dryer and filled with curly hair products. She was so knowledgeable and we chatted about my challenges with my curls, having been CG for about ten weeks. She gave me some amazing tips which I've already put to good use. My husband rolls his eyes because he knows the long explanation ahead. It's not just about the product, it's a whole philosophy of managing your curls. I've been fortunate enough to figure out how to best care for my big hair and what products to use. The one thing I knew I needed was a better haircut. My friend swears by getting a dry cut for her curls so I decided to give this a try. Many people with curly hair have had traumatic haircuts in their lifetime. I hoped this would allow me to wear my hair naturally and look its best. This is without question the best haircut I have ever received. She gave me exactly the haircut I wanted and talked me through what she planned before she did it - no surprises. Her space was clean and well maintained, and I genuinely enjoyed chatting with her while she did my hair. This is a bit expensive, but she has a lower priced "express" option which is without sink service. I might try that next time. Even at the higher price, this was worth it. read more

Takes awhile to get an appointment, and expensive, but worth the wait and the price. When she asked what I wanted to do with my hair, I had nothing in mind but vaguely told her I was willing to part with an inch and I thought my hair "could be better." My hair is wavy in some spots and straight in others. I have previously been told that I might not be a good candidate for a curly-specific haircut, but I think anybody with non-straight hair can benefit from working with their texture. I also have thin hair around my part, which has been in the same spot for 19 years. My hair is over-bleached as well. Given what she had to work with, she did an excellent job. My texture looks a lot more fun, and the overall shape is MUCH improved. She switched the side I part on, which was scary, but looks a lot better with growing out my hella damaged hair. She taught me how to style daily without shampooing daily. Given that you don't need to get your hair cut that often when you see her, and given that she does it right the first time, it really isn't overly pricy to go to Marni. I will be making my next appointment a month in advance. read more

I love Marni and her curl philosophy. You'll never see a brush or a flat iron in her salon. Curly hair isn't genetic as much as it is coaxed and nurtured. Marni does a great job explaining why your curly hair won't do the same thing as another curly girl. She understands that each head of hair is unique and that you have to respond to what you have instead of what you want (and Marni never thinks I actually listen to her!!). While it takes to learn how to handle your hair and how to get good results, the work is worth it. She's very good about explaining how to apply product and what products to use. She's very personable and is always happy to discuss goals for hair and ways to get there. I couldn't possibly let anyone else cut my hair!! read more

I visited Marni at Cuvana in West Bloomfield for the first time this week. And I am SO glad I did!!!! I was somewhat anxious because if curly hair is cut badly, it can be a disaster for months. Also I have had some hair loss due to medical issues this past year and my curl has changed since a lot. Marin knew just what to do to keep the overall length while reshaping. She also gave me the confidence to go curly all over including the bangs and to use different products that are much better for my hair type. She is very sweet and a great listener.
