My traveling lover and I stayed a total of four nights from Monday to Friday. Upon arrival, the valet was extremely friendly, willing to assist, and answered several questions about the area's offerings. Walking up the stairs to the main lobby, we were stunned by the roaring 20's era décor along with the concert grand piano and several ornate chandeliers. There were multiple sitting rooms, ballrooms and two attached restaurants for dining. Upon reaching the fourth floor we admired the period photography spread throughout the hallways showing construction, renovations and historic living. The ornate doors, brought up to modern standards were a welcome touch and maintained the upscale look of the original hotel accommodations. Upon reaching our room the initial magic of the hotel quickly started to fade. We were given Room 414, a corner room overlooking the local art university. The lighting in the entryway was vastly inadequate, especially when trying to use the coffee maker during early morning, not wanting to use the main light and wake up my still asleep lover. There was no refrigerator in the room, and after speaking with co-workers staying in the hotel our room seemed to be one of the few without one. The ice bucket which we had to use to keep our White Claws cold was of poor quality, with the ice melting very quickly. There were holes in the sheets, from thumb sized to tears at the corners larger than a grapefruit. We mentioned this to the management right after checking in and were told the issue would be fixed, however the issue was never fixed. The amount of effort to restore the room was not the same effort which was put into the common areas around the lobby. The crown molding around the windows was detaching from the roof, leaving several obvious gaps. There were remnants of previous water damage repairs which looked as if they had simply been painted over with poorly matched paint. The bathroom provided the biggest disappointment. The sliding barn-style door was a nice touch, but seemed to be the lone bright spot. For starters, there was no fan, and even though there was a window, the locking mechanisms were broken, and we couldn't crack the window for ventilation. The toilet paper dispenser was either broken, not installed correctly, or was simply a very poor design. This led both of us to simply remove the roll and place it on the windowsill. The shower has a fixed sliding glass door, so when you go to turn on the water, you have no choice but to get immediately blasted by cold water. There were remnants of shampoo and conditioner dispensers in the shower. They did not completely finish removing them, which highlights the half efforts made to maintain the entire room. During day four, the housekeepers came through the room to replace towels and take out the trash. The staff of course ignored the early sheet issue I brought to attention on the first day. They appeared to clean the room next to ours. The reason I know this is they left sheets and towels outside their room in the hallway which was right next to ours for over 24 hours. The final disappointment came when I checked out. They did not properly account for the room on my receipt, and I now have to contact them again to fix their error in order to submit the receipt for work. While the room itself was disappointing, there were a couple things I liked about the hotel. The gym on the 11th floor had state of the art equipment, and was always well stocked with water and towels. The location of the hotel was perfect for our needs. We were able to enjoy several trips across the street to the Salt City Market to try a host of local flavors from several international restaurants. We also enjoyed being able to take a short walk to see multiple buildings with classic architecture while stopping at incredible restaurants along the way. Overall, we had mixed feelings about the hotel, for while beautiful, historic and well placed, the room itself was a disappointment, especially given the price point. From the lack of maintenance and poor customer service, it appears staff do not take pride in their work or care much about the customer experience. read more

I traveled up to Syracuse this past weekend for one of my college friends' wedding, and a block of rooms were reserved here at Marriott Syracuse Downtown. Being a fan of cities in general, I was excited to be staying in the middle of it all, and all my experiences at Marriotts before were good so it seemed like a win-win. What I found when I got to the hotel really exceeded my expectations. It was unbeknownst to me beforehand that this Marriott branch is a completely restored, historic hotel formerly known as Hotel Syracuse. A book in my room told of how the hotel used to be one of the vibrant spots of the city, but over the years it fell into disarray - being passed on from developer to developer until Marriott bought, restored, and reopened it late last year. Because of that deep history, the hotel is exploding with character; the details in the lobby, elevators, and hallways were so intricate and full of character that I couldn't stop looking - truly stunning and a feast for the eyes. Marriott did a good job updating the facilities while still keeping the character of the hotel. A good example of this was my room door which still had some of the old "service please" and ventilator buttons from the hotel's previous life. The hotel also has three (?) ballrooms as well as two bars and a restaurant on the first floor. There were only a couple of details that left something to be desired for me. While my room was great, there was no full-length mirror (I know, nit-picky), also I would like to see a bigger variety of food options in the hotel (which they seem to be working on). Also, something worth noting is that the hotel doesn't have a parking lot - just valet and a garage. They charge you for garage parking every time you leave the lot - I believe the most I paid for a single parking interval was $18 (when I kept my car parked overnight). Overall, I'm a fan of this hotel - lots of character and a growing number of accommodations right in the heart of Syracuse. If I ever found myself in the Cuse again I would definitely look into staying here again. read more

Having been to cuse a handful of times I personally only come when I HAVE to. This was one of those times...BUT luckily I stayed at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. Being that I have my own views and opinions of the city I really wasn't expecting much at all, but upon arrival I had to pinch myself when I walked through the doors. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. The lobby was very impressive and before I even walked up the stairs to check in I was in awe. The whole vibe/decor is very historic feeling but it's paired very well with a "new" feel as well. Many of the other reviews have mentioned this and have posted pictures as well. -Service: 5/5, every single staff member I encountered was kind, courteous, and eager to help. -Food: 3/5, I ordered room service when I arrived and the food was pretty good. Nothing great, but good. Fast delivery to the room as well. The breakfast was your standard continental (eggs, bacon, hash browns, muffins, etc.) -Room: 4/5, I was actually very impressed with the room, it was a nice size, big TV, comfortable bed, nice bathroom/shower, the only reason I can't give it a 5 is because I had no fridge. Not a big deal though. -Location: 5/5, walking distance to Dinosaur BBQ, and tons of other restaurants & bars. Overall, I have to say that I've been pretty well traveled and stayed at many hotels...and it pains me to say this, BUT this was hands down one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in. Well it was a really comfortable room, but it better be, considering all the money that she paid for it in my humble opinion. I usually get cheaper hotel rooms in this and honestly there isn't that much difference between a $50 room and this one when it comes down to it. But don't tell any of the people staying here that because it will sound to them either facetious or like they wasted a ton of money, and in either case that can't be good. read more

If your traveling alone and afraid of being in a place with a high crime rate definitely find another hotel outside of the Downtown Syracuse area because this area is super sketchy! Even valet parking was confusing. As that entrance is in the back alley and you have to take an elevator up the stairs to the lobby area. The lobby area has registers like an old bank. Anyways.... super questionable area nearby and they charge for valet parking with in and out but if you self park it's in a bad garage you have to walk across the street and you can't go in and out. Definitely valet the car and don't leave the hotel! The room itself is fine. That's why they get 3 star because it's a Marriott but if you could avoid this location please do so ! I certainly will when traveling next time. read more

Terrible. Worst decision was booking with this place for my wedding. Prejudiced and dishonest staff, specifically Kayla Sawyer. Her incompetence with numbers is either extremely questionable or outright embarrassing. Every so often, random expenses were accrued. She could not calculate 2+2. Was on vacation almost every week, never picked up the phone, dodged my questions unless she was chasing me for money. After I signed the contract, the cracks began to show. Staff made color decisions without confirming first, and I received zero guidance whatsoever on the menu prior to closing everything, only after was it mentioned that I could've ordered more expensive options to save on my contract total overall. The staff even refused to provide my family with the $9k + of food and canned bevs we paid for, that they kept, we tried to reschedule but they wanted another $12,500+. To keep the food, is truly diabolical. What a waste of humanity this place is. read more

Beautiful historic hotel. I love the way it has been restored and maintained to keep the details and beauty of the original hotel yet still feels very clean and up-to-date with amenities. Little things like the beautiful elevators and and hallways that lead to the rooms add to the ambience. Another feature that I've never seen before are the beautiful historic wood doors to each room. These are awesome in their form and function. Tak be e a little time and look how they were built and designed. And they are all in beautiful condition! I've never written the word "beautiful" so many times in a review, but it fits here. Oh, also the staff was great. Pro tip: if you'd rather self park, that's an option. Just park across the street in a lot that you can pay by the day. I really appreciated the valet giving me that option, and being super nice about it. read more

We were booked to stay at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, unfortunately we were bumped from our flight. This threw off our schedule and we were unable to make our reservation for our hotel stay. After contacting Bonvoy customer support they submitted a ticket to have our cancellation looked at by a, Mr. Don Shilling, the director of operations at this hotel, unfortunately he refused to reimburse us for our missed reservation. I called and left a polite message to return my message and discuss his refusal to refund our reservation. He never responded. BEWARE of this hotel, I recommend staying at several of the other hotels in the area. The staff is rude and dismissive. read more

Husband and I had an over night get away this past week and were both pleased and unpleased! We checked into a room on the second floor only to find that the two windows over looked a black roof and that was all you could see from from the windows making the room very dark! We went back to the front desk to ask for a room that you could see out of!! The front desk was very understanding and gave us keys to a larger room on the same floor that you could see out of the windows and had a view of the down town! Our only other problem was the shower. It is a large modern shower but the floor needs a non slip mat or perhaps some non-slip strips put on the floor. It was a step back in time for me as I grow up in Syracuse and loved seeing how they have saved the hotel! read more

I would give zero star if that was an option. I had the absolute worse experience in my life with this hotel. My coworker and I booked two nights in Marriott between 6/25 & 6/27. There was a thunderstorm this past weekend and messed up all the NYC area airports and travelers. It is all around the news. Hundreds of delayed and cancelled flights. Me and my co-worker's flight was a late night 11pm flight. Due to the storm, it was delayed 6 hours. As soon as I know that there was a delay, I called the hotel and told them about delay and make sure that I can still check in even if I may arrive after 3am. I called them multiple time as my flight was keep delaying to a later time. They told me no worry. They will check me in. However, my flight got cancelled at the end. After the 6 hours wait in the airport, I left the airport and drove 5 hours from NYC to Syracuse and arrived the hotel. I was super exhausted after I arrive the hotel the other day and just wanted to take a rest. When i check in, the front desk told me that because I arrived late, they cancelled my entire reservation for two nights, regardless I already paid for the two nights of hotel and called them regarding my delayed flight. They told me that the hotel was fully booked and there is no room for me and no refund because I book it through expedia. The funny thing is, she said that if we reserved through their official website, she can give one room to us and I have to share the room with my co-worker. In other words, there was available room!!! but she just didn't give it to us!!! We had to move our luggages out and move to another hotel very last minute during a thunderstorm. Please! I told you that I may arrive after 3am. If you are going to cancel my reservation if I can't arrive by a certain time, let say 6am the next day, would you notify me? Be honest, I didn't even know that a hotel could do that to a customer. I have never experience this before. They took my money and let someone book my room again to make twice the profit out of the same room? This is absolutely ridiculous and furious. I didn't book a cheap hotel, I booked a Marriott. I have expedia agent contacted the hotel, and they still said no refund... PLEASE help me to understand under your policy, what should a traveler/customer do if they have delayed flight? Nothing, but we should just agree to give you our money and lose our rooms. Do you think that fair to your customers? I would report this to customer affair. Beautifully renovated hotel. They kept a lot of the antique features which adds to the ambiance. Good location downtown. The bad. Overpriced. No parking unless you pay $20/day for valet. They have parking marked for guests checking in but the valet complains about you using it for that which is flat out annoying and bizarre. They have a crappy Irish bar restaurant on the ground floor. We came in late and their full menu, which they were supposed to have was replaced by a poor excuse for a bar menu. The place is frat party loud and very difficult to get someone to wait on you and get a drink. The place sucks and should be removed. Lastly, the rooms have super cool curved wooden antique doors which look amazing. But, our neighbor a few doors down had their lock malfunction and was unable to get back in their room. We had to endure listening to the maintenance guy hammering it and using a crow bar for an hour trying to break in. Crazy. And a seriously dangerous safety issue. If they needed to get in for an emergency, or even the fire dept. they would not be able to. What if a young child was locked inside. So very dangerous. The renovations here were well worth the wait for guests. The lobby is, well, breathtaking. Kind of feels like you're in an old school bank or train station. The building went up in 1924 and the lobby certainly reflects that theme. The rooms, on the other hand, are contrastingly modern. Everything is super immaculate and the rooms smell just as fresh and clean as the lobby. Check in was smooth and so was the $15 valet. The complimentary breakfast buffet downstairs at Eleven Water was delicious, service was prompt and they will make you an omelette or waffles fresh if you ask. Overall, this is probably one of the nicer hotels I've stayed in. My only gripe is the rooms don't have fridges, which is probably by design to keep guests from bringing back leftovers and disrupting the fresh aromas. read more

One of the nicest and coolest hotels I have ever stayed. They took a 100 year old hotel and transformed it back to its original heritage. Absolutely gorgeous historic facility. I was amazed at all the various things within the building. A jewelry store. 3 bars, multiple eateries. No reason to ever leave the building. I would highly recommend staying here if ever in Syracuse. The staff was over the top friendly and exceptional service. Stayed here for a work trip. It was booked by the company and was supposed to be an ADA Accessible Room with a roll in shower. The room was very nice and spacious, however the shower was very narrow and difficult to use. There was not a bench in the shower but I had brought my own. After transferring bro the bench my knees were almost touching the wall in front of me. The sad part is they had plenty of room to make it bigger as the bathroom was very large. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and is was fair. We also had a dinner at the hotel that was terrible. This was not what I expect from a Marriott Hotel. Very disappointed! read more

Easily the worst customer service experience I've ever encountered with a Hotel. I was in a wedding and had 2 suits that were cleanly packaged in a box, ready to be shipped. Accidentally left them behind and called, e-mailed the Marriot Downtown Syracuse for several days. People at the front desk would repeatedly pass along to some "security and lost and found" mail box in which i called for 7 days and only spoke to someone, once. They asked me to e-mail "security@marriotsyracusedowntowbn.com" which never went through to an actual e-mail. I left countless voicemails over 1 week on how to contact met and they have not responded once. I have been incurring late fees for a suit and tux rental because of the terrible customer service. I even asked the front desk to put me in contact with someone other than the Head of Security who has not been able to get in touch with for over 7 days and all they said they could do, was simply send me to the security voice mailbox. I expected better from such a beautiful, aesthetic Hotel, but they do not seem to have any interest in or care to accommodate or simply help out a paying Guest. I am still waiting for a response and to have my Suits shipped while I am incurring late fees. Good Luck. read more

The hotel itself was beautiful. The room was spacious and clean; the daytime and early evening front desk staff was friendly and accommodating. During our stay, there were 5 fire alarm false activations; two during the early morning hours resulting in having to vacate the hotel. None of which prompted any kind of communication or apology from the overnight staff. Normally I'd chalk it up to the stress of the situation, but the hotel was not highly occupied by any means. During the chaos, I managed to lose a personal item important to me, which I of course could have done more to avoid, but in the wee hours of the night and being awoke from my sleep, I feel is understandable. When I asked the front desk to let me know if it was found, they told me I'd be charged for shipping. To be fair, when I explained why it was lost they said they'd waive the shipping cost (or else I'd have rated the experience 2 stars) and *finally* apologized for the inconvenience (while still not explaining why there were so many alarms), and I imagine the jump to stating I'd be charged was a result of their training. In any event, the hotel was very nice and if not for the overnight staff (particularly who I assume was the overnight manager), it would be a higher rating. read more

Over 15 years as a Marriott loyalist and I've never seen a level of neglect in a hotel room before. Attaching photos of the wall/vent that the headboard was against. The amount of dust tells me this hasn't been cleaned in years. I didn't notice this until morning, figured my congestion was a cold but it was a reaction to the dust - checked out a day early and shared this with the front desk, not even an apology. Stayed at this beautifully restored hotel for 2 nights. However, the service was not good. We reserved a room months ago with 2 double beds. We were given a room with 1 king and a pull out couch. My adult daughter called for sheets and blankets the 1st night. When we returned to the hotel to go to sleep the 2nd night, the sheets and blanket were gone. It took 45 minutes and 2 phone calls to get them. But the real issue was the restaurant. The waiter was astonishingly rude. Asking for tea put him over the edge. "I already brought 2. If I can find any more vessels." It was a breakfast buffet. He didn't have to take orders or deliver meals. Our group was separated on 3 tables and we all remarked on his attitude. Unfortunately, he was working the next day too. We were part of a wedding block of rooms with breakfast vouchers, which he demanded the minute we were seated the 2nd morning. And yet, some of us found breakfast charges on our credit cards when we checked out. He needs some training in customer service. read more

You could not pay me to stay here. I ordered a coffee to the room. It took about an hour. I did not leave any privacy tags on the door and cleaning service never came any day. The doors do not close all the way unless you slam them which if you are not familiar can be concerning when you wake up. For the valet, you text a number to get your car, when I came down they said "Yeah it takes about 35-45 minutes." Also, they put the tv in the room to the side of the bed and not looking at it. Very weird concept to me. After leaving the hotel, it is easier to get in contact with the tooth fairy than it is the front desk simply just to get a receipt. The decoration in the main area is nice but dated. The gym is nice and convenient location. The people working were nice, it just seemed like an incompetent operation. read more

Wow! This place really is a great venue for a wedding. Truly between the venue, main meal, hors d'oeuvres and DJ, I could not say enough. If I could give this event a 10 star I would. First off the wedding party looks magnificent. The pre-meal meal were bacon wrapped scallops, lamb chops, tortellini, salads, fruit, coconut shrimp and too many others to list. The main meal was hot! Surprise! Meat was tender and medium rare as requested. Even down to the little table gift, we received raw honey harvested from the brides dads bees. The wedding was held in the Persian terrace ball room which is stunning. The reception held in another ballroom with food served on the elevated floor and dancing on the main floor. Separate but easily accessible from the food area. I'm sure this wasn't a low cost wedding but you get what you pay for. This is truly memorable. read more

DO NOT BOOK HERE! They do not honor reservations. They overbook and will cancel your reservation, leaving you without a room. I booked a room for the November 2023 Family Weekend at Syracuse University on January 30th, as soon as the dates were announced. I know that everything in Syracuse fills up immediately for this weekend, so I felt fortunate to have secured a reservation. Today, September 25, nearly 8 months since I made the reservation, I was informed that my reservation was cancelled because they had way overbooked. Apparently they had known about this situation since January 30 but chose to wait until less than 6 weeks before the weekend in question to let anyone know. No compensation or assistance in finding another hotel was offered. And I am not the only one. I was told that there were at least 30 other reservations that still were going to be canceled. Needless to say, everything within 50 miles is completely sold out. There will be a lot of unhappy Syracuse families. I am told that this happens often. This is terrible customer service! read more

Hotel has done a nice job of retaining historic details with modern amenities. Comfortable room, clean bathroom. Did not eat at any of the restaurants, so no comments there. Stayed over weekend so downtown neighborhood was quiet and felt a little 'dicey' (but not dangerous); not an area that I would have an interest in exploring. Valet and garage parking are reasonably priced and ample, free overnight street parking surrounding the hotel. Close to freeway and the university. One minor call out; on the way my room, I noticed a few Q-tips in the hallway carpet. A few hours later, they were still there despite housekeeping cleaning the nearby rooms. Far from disgusting or unsanitary, I just would have expected a higher level of attention to detail from a hotel of this quality. Would return given a good rate. read more

We come to Syracuse often and this hotel is about the only choice available. Plus, we are Marriott super platinum diamond gold extra special level customers, so it makes sense to stay here. What doesn't make sense is the persistent decline of this place that we have witnessed over the past two years of staying here. I get that COVID created problems, but we're through that. The place is packed every time we are here - SU sports teams, weddings, visiting sports teams, students and families, alumni and sports fans. This hotel is busy! And yet the place is a mess. Front desk workers are untrained, rooms are in disrepair (on this visit the shower door handle fell off and the toilet paper holder is off the wall), common spaces are not clean, valet is just nutty, the rooms are not cleaned well and daily service is nothing more than a quick bed making. Don't expect any of the coffee supplies to be replenished during the stay. Lighting in the room is insufficient and furnishings are well.... Not good, but passable given all the other challenges. We've stayed here about 20 nights in the past year - so please know this isn't a 'rant'. This is a good customer observing a business who is maximizing its margins by providing a lot of one-time patrons a crappy experience, while repeat customers are forced to tolerate one crappy stay after another. Time to invest in this property Marriott!!! read more

Shocked at what a terrible experience we've had here. The room was far from cheap - but the hotel operated like a bargain motel. We were traveling last minute and Marriott hotels are almost always head and shoulders above others, so I didn't think twice. The room was dirty, the beds had ratty wrinkled sheets with holes, the bathroom (shower especially) were actually visibly dirty - with hair. Room service came an hour and a half late with half the order- apparently they were all out of the other items but didn't bother to let us know so we would be able to order something else - room service prices but the food was in a brown bag, like shoddy takeout. I really expected so much more from Marriot hotels. If it were refundable I would have checked out early. read more

Holy mother of pearl this place is beautiful! I have been waiting for them to reopen for over a decade and it was definitely worth the wait. We recently decided to stay here during the parade day. This was because they had a really cool event down stairs that lasted most of the night. The rooms were extremely clean feeling and the beds were super comfy. it was such an easy process and I was surprised we were even able to get a room that day. The event itself was absolutely amazing! They had a buffet in multiple different rooms that had hotdogs, pizza, chilli, and build your own Ruebens! I can admit I probably ate way too much! They had all kinds of music playing in different areas and you could freely move about and explore the hotel. I also took a sneak peak of a few places that are going to be opening soon which is exciting. On the top floor there is a gym with wide view windows so that you can look out over the city while you work out. They have all kinds of new equipment to check out. They also provide you with cool towels and earbuds for your music. A really nice addition to that, is the fact they have a water machine in there with purified or carbonated water! Everything would've been fine, probably 4/5 stars, except this is already an older building, then there was the creepiest painting I've ever seen in the bathroom. I might sleep with the lights on tonight. Anyone that has seen the witch on Netflix knows why. Booked a father/son night in this newly restored grand-ole lady. No expense was spared to bring this gem back (& even beyond) her former glory. Spent many moments here in my youth at countless conferences/ weddings/ dinners/ and New Years events. I cannot remember the hotel looking this beautiful. Check in was very pleasant. The young lady asked what brought me to the hotel & as soon as I explained my visit- she outlined a bunch of pertinent history in the hotel. She also encouraged us to visit the Grand Ballroom as it was not being used. After checking into our room- we quickly set out to explore the various ballrooms, lounges and nooks and crannies. The hallway walls and guest rooms are adorned with historical photos of the hotel and the City of Syracuse- a very nice and enduring touch. The hotel currently has two gathering/dining areas- with an Irish pub "Shaughnesseys" set to open soon. Parking is $5 a day at the garage next door and a valet option does exist. Many food choices are a short 2-3 block walk away- with Armory Square around the corner( strongly recommend Peppino's Neapolitan on Clinton). So happy that this gem is back and hopeful to return here many times in the future. read more

Rooms are good but heater blows right where your head is. The food here is atrocious. Probably the worst pizza I have ever had.

upon check-in, I was standing at the front desk and waiting for at least 10 minutes for someone to check me in. I then checked into my room and I open the door and all I could smell was fried chicken immediately went down to the front desk again I asked for my room to be changed however, the hotel was sold out, I asked for the manager and she said that there were no other rooms available immediately canceled my room and went to the Crowne Plaza from then on my experience came a lot better. One thing that I have to say after being in the business for 20 years, you would never leave the front desk alone, and you would also never work in your pajamas.
