Several businesses at the mall are still closed or have gone out of business. I went back for the Pan-African Film Festival (PAFF) arts and crafts to get a birthday gift for my wife. What used to be filled with vendors and patrons for the African Artist. The festival was a quarter of its heyday. I found a unique gift for my wife, and then I got a gift for myself at the gentleman's Fashion habadaserie, created by James Blumfield. I always wanted a suit from this designer. I finally got a few of his creations. Talking directly to the designer about my plans for the garments helped me get a deal that I couldn't pass up. My pieces are made of superior marerial making my investment of great value. Afro City is still there, providing access to creators and their craft. According to Tyrone Duprie, Creative Director and designer of handheld art, Afro City is a space where a collective of African and/or Descendants of American Slaves sell their crafts. I also met a Master Carpet designer working on a wearable art piece. If you're looking for a getaway in the city of Los Angeles, visit the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall for a unique mall experience.

When you walk down the center, there are only a few places open on the bottom and a few on the top. At least the places that are still open are closer together, but the emptiness is hard to miss. TJ Maxx feels like the only real anchor on one side. There is also Southern Girl Desserts and a few other shops, but you can really feel what is missing. There are no major anchor tenants anymore. Walmart has been gone for a long time. Sears is gone. It feels barren. It reminded me of a hair salon that only sees people by appointment, with no walk in traffic. There were almost no people just strolling the mall like in years past. Afro City Marketplace and Ninas and some of the other African American businesses were nice and doing their best. The problem is not with them. The mall itself just feels empty and struggling. Because of that, I have to give Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza 3 stars. It is okay, but very difficult to see it like this.

I used to love shopping at Nordstrom Rack in the Fox Hills Mall (Westfield Culver City). I've been…read morea loyal customer for years and every visit I'd easily spend $400+ without any issues. Unfortunately, an experience about two years ago completely changed how I feel about this store. During my last visit, I was racially profiled and followed throughout the store by two asset protection employees (one male and one female). I have no idea why I was singled out. Despite being treated that way, I still purchased around $600 worth of items that day. What made it even more upsetting was seeing one of them waiting near the front door as I was leaving, as if they expected me to do something wrong. I even waved and laughed in disbelief because it was so obvious. He stood at the door after following me, once the second person started following me, then left that post after I walked out with my purchased items. What's even more frustrating is that I saw someone else (same ethnicity as the security that were following me) in the store actually stealing items, but because they were so focused on watching me, they completely ignored her. I saw her walk right out the door after stuffing her pockets and purse with stolen items. Unbelievable! That experience was disappointing. I left the store wishing I hadn't spent a dime there. Since then, I've never returned to that location. I even tried shopping at the Nordstrom Rack on Fig at 7th downtown recently, and unfortunately experienced the same thing, being followed around the store. Because of these experiences, I've decided I will no longer shop at Nordstrom Rack or Nordstrom. No customer who is spending their hard-earned money should feel targeted or profiled while simply trying to shop. Prior to the incident where I was followed around the store, I had another frustrating experience at this location. On a previous visit, I purchased clothes and other items. When I walked out, the alarm at the door went off, but another customer was exiting at the same time so I assumed it was related to her purchase. I had two bags of clothes and other items, and didn't notice anything unusual when I quickly checked my bags. About a month later, when I went to wear one of the dresses, I discovered the security sensor was still attached. It was black and blended in with the dress, which is probably why I didn't notice it earlier. I then checked the other clothes and two more dresses that I hadn't worn yet and found that they also still had sensors attached, hidden on the slip of the dress. I returned to the store to have them removed, but initially the staff refused because I didn't have the receipt. Fortunately, I had used my Nordstrom credit card and they were able to look up the purchase and finally remove the sensors. This situation could have been avoided if the employee had properly checked the dresses (since they hide their sensors) before bagging them. These are higher-priced items that typically have sensors attached, so you would think staff would be trained to know where the sensors are placed. But I don't totally blame the staff because they were hidden. Why not make them visible? Why place a black sensor on a black dress? Customers shouldn't have to inspect their purchases for security tags after leaving the store. Goodbye, Nordstroms! It was fun while it lasted.

The blue gift wrap paper is going to be used to protect a family relic, (an OG Mr. Bingle-New Orleans folks know WHO or WHAT he is lol). And since the one I have is a keepsake from the OG Maison Blanche dept store from back in the day, I need to take that extra step to protect him-and the blue wrapping paper does just that. Lastly, I was in need of a few to go containers that transform into nice little packages for carry out grub These not only look nice and provide a few aesthetics, but will come in handy as I prepare to send more and more folks on their merry way with my Holy Bell Peppers! Did I mention CSA, or customer service All Star Edwin (pictured) led the way, particularly when it came to the body wash, which was in a different isle of the store from last time and thank goodness was no longer under lock and key!

The big negative is that a lot of the smaller, more valuable items or commonly stolen items are locked up like at most Walmarts. I totally understand as Culver City is not one of the nicest of cities in the greater Los Angeles area. There is a parking garage for the mall, so there are plenty of parking. The parking garage has a sign as you enter that shows how many parking spots are available. The garage also has lights above each space (red = occupied and green = available) which made identifying available spaces quickly. I came into Target to purchase a new lightning cable to use with my rental car for Apple CarPlay as well as a few other items. Of course all cell phone/electronic charging cables are locked up. I pushed the button for assistance, but after waiting 5+ minutes, no one came, so my wife had to go find someone in electronics to help us which still took another 5+ minutes as they were helping other customers checkout. We did have to pay for the charging cable at the electronics department, so we also paid for a couple items that were in our hands despite not finishing our shopping there yet. We ended up having to pay for other items we still needed at the front cashier which was an inconvenience. Overall what should have been. Quick in and out trip turned out to be longer than expected.
