The only check-out with people is the customer service desk. Everything else is self-service. What that means is that the store isn't conducive to actually filling your cart. If you wanted to do some grocery shopping in there, it's going to be a slow process as you're either scanning things yourself or handing them over a counter to someone. Another issue is the order pickup for app/remote orders. Maybe a result of staffing levels, but the few times I've done this the staff there seemed either confused or stressed out by the process. Given the relatively small square footage, I think this Target is also trying to do too much. There are electronics but not too many. Clothing but not too much. I am just as likely to not find what I need as to find it. And the Starbucks in there has wild levels of turnover, resulting in consistent issues with orders there. Overall, a tough spot.

She then went to check to see if I had a points reward card. I didn't and she did not offer to sign me up for one so I could get points on the purchase I was making, which was over $200. The person I was with went to a different cashier, declined the credit card offer, and the cashier offered to sign them up for a points card. The manager on Dec. 13, 2023 told me I could put the items on…read moremy TJ Maxx credit card to get the points, using just my receipt and the credit card I used and my TJ Maxx credit card.  The cashier on Dec. 13, 2023 then told me the manager's name. I wrote it on the receipt. I came on Dec. 26, 2023 with the receipt and both cards. I stood in a line for 40 minutes. Two separate managers told me "if you don't have the items, you can't switch to another form of payment" and "we don't have a manager by that name." I even told them I couldn't get here sooner before I gave the gift because I was accompanying my wife who was in the hospital for weeks on end. They said, "That's our policy." Every other store just asks for your social security number if you don't have your card and this allows you to make a purchase with your store credit card.  I strongly recommend not shopping at TJ Maxx on Middlesex Avenue in Somerville.

So it has a special place in my heart, or it's just a bad habit acquired over the past 35 years?? Either way Northgate has evolved quite a bit since the 80's. Northgate now houses a lot of stores including 2 supermarkets, a gym, McDonalds, Taco Bell, a few anchor stores and much much more. The parking lot is extremely large with more than enough spots for everyone even on the busiest of shopping days. This is a one stop eat, bank and shop stop. You need to get a staff member to open a case. Who has time for that? There used to be bustling lines of people as cashiers did their thing, and now customers are shunted to self-checkout, where a worker watches you do their job. On the other hand, the food selection was impressive. That was a nice surprise. In another world, where Target counts as "going out for the day" (I'm not quite ready for retirement) and not "a place I need to stop by to pick up a few things," I could see myself coming here for staples and weekly items. But, that time is not now. The atmosphere seems sad. The workers are focused on wheeling around large gurneys of product to stock the shelves. Do I really want to bother them to point to something behind glass and ask them if I could please have it? I'm not a child. If I want something, I should be able to place it in my cart and not have to look around to find someone to ask permission to have it. I remember when Target was "the" place to go to for a variety of things. Why did they have to make it harder to shop there? Ok - just read about the $500 million "shrink" due to theft. So, I guess that's a good reason. Someone smarter than me, I'm sure, has looked at the cost of theft prevention measures vs. the cost of losing customers, and here we are.

When we were older, we used to hang out out back chug some beers play some music on the boombox and chill. let's just wind it up real fast to modern day Mystic mall it's more like a strip mall with the anchor being Market Basket but there are some other big stores, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, GNC, etc. etc. etc. I actually go to all the stores and all the restaurants it's not the same as back in the day but it's really convenient and believe it or not the prices at all the stores are pretty decent. It's a great mall even though it's all outside now. Worry about parking extensive parking so you might have to walk up along aisle from the other side of the lot, but you'll always have a spot. Lots and lots at this mall it was actually an inside mall anyways check it out. Great place to go.
