Could not recommend Katy and Martial Vivot more highly. I've been cutting my hair with Katy now for a couple years and have left with an impeccable haircut every time, something I can only say about 2-3 haircuts prior. The attention to detail and precision she cuts with is worlds away from any other barber I've cut my hair with, and she always goes the extra mile making my extremely thick hair miraculously easy-to-manage. Because Katy takes so much care, it never takes me more than half a minute to deal with my hair in the morning and I receive compliments several times a week. It doesn't hurt that Katy also makes me feel more comfortable than I ever have at a salon; our conversations are engaging, wide-ranging, and never forced. I love coming into the salon at Martial Vivot and appreciate the low-key setting and privacy provided by the partitions between barbers. The entire support staff is lovely as well, especially Malcolm and Arianna. She's managed to transform my really unmanageable and thick hair from covering it each day in product, to actually being able to go out, with confidence and almost zero product. She is phenomenal! I purchased a gift for my husband which included brows, haircut and santa maria shave. We arrived on the afternoon of December 17 and Katy was first to start grooming Greg. she did a nice job on his lashes. Next he headed to Garrett for his haircut. I wanted my husband to make some changes in his hair and he finally agreed. I was there for his consultation with Garrett. He changed Greg's style and it was one of the best haircuts EVER. I still love his hair and it has been almost 4 weeks. The shave was wonderful. My hands could not believe how smooth his skin was. I wish there was a way to make it last longer. My husband really liked the space. They evn offer you a alcohol drink. It was the nicest salon experience. Only negative is the price. I found Martial Vivot by googling for a high end salon that is strictly devoted to men's hair. Seeing the uniformly positive reviews I gave it a go. Now, 4 years later I am still a very happy camper. I went the first week that they reopened and I was greeted with a big "hello" from the receptionist, and she proceeded to take my temperature. That and the elimination of a waiting area was the only changes that I noticed. My appointment was with Martial, and at that point he came out to welcome me with a big "hello" and to escort me back to his station. I was in such desperation of a haircut, as Martial last cut my hair in the beginning of January and I was pulling it back into a ponytail, which totally not me. We had a consultation to figure out what would be my best option. We both agreed on the path to take, and he proceeded to start by eliminating the major mass of hair. The salon was beyond clean! Someone was constantly sweeping up the hair. He would then step away, while someone would come and wash my hair. After the washing, he returned and finished styling my hair. When he completed my, he handed me my glasses so that I could see what he did. I was beyond ecstatic at the magic that he performed for me! And after two weeks, all I do is wash it, and it naturally falls into place. It could not be better. This the best place to go! read more

Let me start by saying that I really wanted to like this salon - and I really expected to! I'm new to NY, and one of the first things I wanted to do was find a new place to get my haircut. Martial Vivot has stellar reviews and a seemingly talented staff, so I made the decision with excited ease. I emailed the salon inquiring about an appointment, along with a couple pictures of my hair, the direction I was hoping to move in, and a brief bio. I feel that these are all requisite for the savvy receptionist to make a good placement. I was placed with Jerome. I arrived 5 minutes early for my appointment. The receptionist took my coat and bag, but declined to offer me a beverage. I felt like I was getting eyed down by this woman, as she stared appraisingly over her desk at me. She made no attempt at small-talk. Unfortunately this was only the beginning of my cold treatment at MV. This is especially rude because I mentioned in my email that I was new in town. When you pay a world-class price for a haircut, you should also be receiving world-class hospitality. Anyways, onto Jerome. Jerome introduced himself and asked me what I wanted to do. He clearly had not been apprised of my email. I told him what I wanted and he started. Jerome made no attempt at getting to know me, never asked where I'm from, what I do, what I like, etc. This wouldn't have bothered me so much had I not felt coldly regarded as I had with the receptionist. The real reason I came though, was for the haircut. Unfortunately the haircut came out pretty badly. Sure it looked passable on my way out, and for the next few days, but by 10 days it looked pretty bad. If I ordered that haircut at a restaurant I'd send it back and ask that a different chef prepare it. SUMMARY: This is a great place to go if you want a mediocre cut while being condescended and generally made to feel unappreciated. read more

If you're looking for a phenomenal cut by a true professional, Martial Vivot is certainly not the place for you. Though he may ask you what you have in mind, he takes the creative liberty to do as he pleases and he does so with an unrivaled pompousness and arrogance. Martial berated a loyal patron and friend of mine and then permanently dismissed him from the salon. Though Martial boasts talent and skill, I'd say its overshadowed by his poor attitude and condescending demeanor. When you're paying hundreds of dollars for a haircut, you'd expect a certain level of professionalism and gratitude for your patronage. Well not at this overpriced salon. Just hope you catch Martial on a good day, its probable however that you may meet his alter ego, Edward Scissorhands. read more

I was visiting from Cali a few months ago, read the favorable reviews regarding Katy and was fortunate enough to get an appt. Simply put, Katy has mastered her field. She's an uncommon combination of superior talent in terms of cutting, style, patience, and mind boggling detail. I've been here a few times, and truly I've been spoiled and can probably never go anywhere else ever again. The cuts are outstanding (I see Mari), the salon is beautiful, the staff is amazing, and the customer service is extraordinary. For instance, just the other day it was raining out and I forgot to bring an umbrella. As I was leaving, I believe it was the owner Martial himself, noticed I didn't have an umbrella and gave one to me to keep. Highly recommended place, well worth the money. read more

I have lived in NYC for a long time now and I have been to many hair salons but Martial is without a doubt the best stylist i have ever seen! He is friendly, warm, attentive, caring, asked all the right questions, and always gives me the best haircut. He asks me what I have in mind and really pays attention & listens to what I'm looking for, makes suggestions, and even shows me how to take care of my hair afterwards.
