Wanted to try a new barber after my old one just wasn't cutting it (no pun intended) any more and raising prices further. Came in on a Thursday after work and got a seat after waiting ~10 minutes. Leo was the man who did my cut - I asked for a pretty straightforward skin fade, undercut, & comb-over on top. He actually recommended I go for a #3 fade instead my usual, so I figured I'd give a new barber's recommendation a shot and hope for the best. Won't get into too many details about the cut itself - it's a haircut, y'all know it's either complete silence or you're vibing with the barber. But not only was I impressed with the cut, the guys in the shop saw my shoes were covered in hair and would not let me walk out looking like that before blow drying it & giving me a brush to clean it. No joke, had a friend tell me it was leagues ahead of my last barber's fade, and he wasn't a slouch at fades either. I don't have to comment about the prices either - it's Midtown and it's actually decent value when you compare to what you get from places nearby that charge you more. One of the worst cuts I've ever gotten in NYC. The lady barber used a clipper to line up my hairline and did not use a razor (which means there are random hairs poking out and she pushed back my hairline as well). I also asked for a mid-fade with a drop and she gave a high fade no drop. I gave her a tip anyways but would avoid her for sure. Got a haircut from Mike earlier this week. The haircut was insanely perfect. He's very knowledgeable on hair what is the best haircut for you. For a $33 barbershop it is clean and probably the nicest at the price point. He is actually pretty funny and smart once you start talking to him. I've been in nyc for 3 years. Just updating this a few years later. I keep coming back to this place, no matter where I move in the city, because I've never had a bad haircut from any of their staff. Yesterday I went in, barely waited 5 minutes despite it being "rush hour" / after work hours, and was seated with Artur. Barely had to say 2 words and he knew exactly what I wanted / what would look good on me. He even knew I was Italian just by looking at my HAIR and head! Apparently when you're good/experienced, you get a knack for that. Took him 10-15 minutes tops to get me from unruly shaggy hair to a nice cut (I get a haircut once every 2 months, tops). Updating this review so all people of color will know exactly how this place functions. If you are black /have curly and coarse hair, please be sure to read my review below. I will never forget the horrible experiences I have had here. Every person of color should know what they are getting into before they sit in one of those chairs: Unfortunately this place has gone down in the quality of their service. When I first came here, the barbers would spend all of the time they needed to make sure you come out looking great. Now they cycle you in and out to make money since there is always a line outside. There were two disastrous times I went here. I would first like to warn all black people - DO NOT GO TO THIS BARBER SHOP IF YOU ARE BLACK. They do not know how to treat black hair and do not spend the time required to care for black hair. First incident: I came in to get a shave before my laser hair removal. I told them that since I am black and have sensitive skin, I get horrible razor burn from my dark and coarse hair. I requested one barber who did a good job before and instead they gabe me a very old man with a shaky arm who took clippers I told him not to use and shaved against the grain on my face when I asked him not to. I broke out on my face for a month. It took that long for the painful pimples and ingrowns to go away. Second incident: I went in a couple days ago after getting my hair permed to get the pompadour I posted a picture of. They did a great job before. I requested the same guy and AGAIN he sent me to someone else. I said I didn't mind waiting because I spend a lot of money on my hair, had a bad experience with the old man before, but I know that this guy does a great job. He instead gave the barber closest to the window a half-assed description of what my cut was like. Even when U showed the barber a photo, gave him verbal and nonverbal prompts on what to do, he STILL messed it up. I told him not to cut the hair on the top of my head and he cut half of it off. I was still walking him through the process and he stopped the cut because he was getting fed up, it was taking long and he saw that there was more money outside of the door. I still tipped him well and had people looking at me crazy when I left the shop because my hair looked HORRIBLE. I will post a picture after writing this review. I had to go home and fix what he messed up. A WARNING TO ALL BLACK PEOPLE: Do not go to this barber shop. African American hair requires time, an attentive hand and eye, and most importantly a patient barber that us willing to work with you. The people there do not seem to understand the difference between black and white hair. They get a lot of business men in suits who want to get in and get out and get the same haircuts as everyone else. This barber shop is good for one hairstyle for one type of client. If you don't fit that description, then buyer beware. read more

I've been going to Susanna for the past two years or so and she still goes above and beyond to make sure I'm satisfied with the haircut I want. Cutting Asian hair isn't easy and going to a new barber can be daunting, which is why I consider myself lucky that I stumbled upon a place like Premium. On top of all of this, they have a loyalty card which gives you your 10th haircut free, and also offer shampoo service (really convenient when you're grabbing a haircut between errands or on a lunch break). I first went to Premium Barber Shop because it was a few steps away from my office. Since then, I've switched to a new job downtown and still make the trek out to midtown. I normally go into a hair salon to get my hair cut, when it comes to taper fades I go into barber shops. I used to go to the one that is a bit closer to Park ave but the dudes there kept giving me shit for a woman having short hair and blah blah blah. I won't go into details which shop--just know they won't have my money + tip. I know barber shops are typically aimed for men, and I'm just a female customer that likes to get a shape up once every 2-3 weeks when I'm in the area since I travel in between so while going on Yelp and looking for nearby places, I messaged and got a response in 2 minutes by Artur. I had a great haircut here. Let me explain: I needed a haircut after work one day and didn't have a lot of time to take care of it. I found this business on Yelp and saw they had a 10-minute response rate. I decided to send them a message and within 5 minutes I had a response back from Arturo. I came in after work and had no problem with a walk in appointment. Susanna took great care of me and I'm very happy with the outcome. For the price, they could offer you a drink or do a straight razor around the side burns/front corners, but that's what separates a great barbershop from a 5 star one in my opinion.
