I was so disappointed in this jeweler. I felt insulted by their comments (in front of the whole shop) for of trying to ask about restyling or resize my vintage ring. Also, I wanted to change out one small (inexpensive ) stone pendant for another (which I had with me)which the salesperson commented, "that's not going to look good"-did I ask their opinion? It took 3 days & $25- why I let them bully me -I don't know. I was challenged on my requests & made to feel like what I was bothering them. Your store is not that great & your service is selective apparently & unfriendly, I've never encountered such arrogance when you could have had a potential future customer....never again. I was so indecisive about the wedding band, going there multiple times to try different ones on and spending hours there. Never once did I feel rushed or ignored. I brought my wife's emerald/diamond ring in to get an estimate for one of five emeralds missing. The emerald is natural and is a 2point size. I got estimate of $400. I asked why so much? John said, "everything cost more now a days". I did not approve the repairs and picked up my ring. Jags left me standing in their showroom about 15 minutes, while they gabbed with some females, and then wanted to charge me $10 for one of those little watchband pins that hold a wristwatch band together, for just the pin, no installation. What total assholes. No dice. My family previously bought thousands of dollars in jewelry from them in the past. Never again. My recommendation, avoid these shysters. A-holes. Last week I brought my tarnished and horribly bent sterling-silver rings here to be repaired along with my most favorite sterling-silver hoop earrings that were also bent, tarnished and one, post-less. The owner himself came out to examine my jewelry and gave me a great price for repair. He was friendly, kind, conversational and very helpful (as are all of his employees)! He even gave our daughter a ring pop :) - I only wish I had taken a before picture of the horrible condition my jewelry was in as now my jewelry looks brand new!!! Had the most incredible experience working with John at Martin & Martin. I had toured several jewelers in the city who I thought were giving me great deals. John immediately educated me and informed me of all the important details they were neglecting to tell me. Once I told him my budget and the size I was looking for, he worked day and night until he found a diamond with almost zero imperfections. I needed the entire ring custom made by Labor Day weekend which was only 7 days away. This was almost impossible. John was ultimately able to call in a favor to have it expedited. He went above and beyond to make sure I received it in time and kept in constant communication. I live downtown Chicago which was kind of far from his location for me to be able sneak away from my girlfriend. So again he went the extra mile by having someone drop it off downtown for me. The moment I opened the box, I was completely shocked. He captured my vision for the ring 100% to a T. My fiancé can't stop looking at her ring and we are both extremely happy. I reached out to Martin & Martin in advance of heading to their store to make sure they do appraisals, which they said yes and informed me how much they cost. My engagement ring was purchased from an independent designer online because I wanted something different and less traditional. I needed it appraised for insurance coverage. When I walked in to Martin & Martin and explained that I was there for an insurance appraisal, the man whom I spoke with told me they only do appraisals for jewelry purchased at their store. (That very specific information would have been helpful when I reached out in advance.) He asked to see it anyway. I pulled out my sapphire ring and he then adds that they only appraise diamonds. (?!) My ring features a heat-treated, beautiful deep green-blue sapphire, which he scoffed at. "Let me show you a REAL sapphire," he said, and pulled out an ostentatiously large sapphire ring. I explained I didn't want a traditional sapphire; that the unique color of my ring is why purchased it. But thanks for trying to shame me into thinking it was terrible? He then said, "next time just come in and buy something from here, don't bother with that online stuff." He made numerous negative inferences about my ring being purchased online. A prong on my ring is slightly loose, so I asked if they could repair it. I was told no, "because we might damage it or chip the stone and you might try to blame us for it." They must have very little confidence in their own repair services. I was nothing but polite and courteous and Martin & Martin went out of their way to make me feel put down and judged; not to mention the repeated implication I had made some kind of mistake purchasing online. Also, because I felt properly dumb when leaving and assumed I had somehow confused things, I went back and checked their website to see what it says about their appraisal services. It is listed as: "We have three graduate GIA gemologists on staff to offer insurance and estate appraisals. We understand that your jewelry is sentimental, that is why we offer appraisal services while you wait." Additionally - they say they are a full service repair shop and specifically say on their site they handle heat treated gems! I reached out to the maker of the ring who said it's about a 1 minute repair to fix a prong. I can only guess I was treated so poorly because I didn't look like I was going to drop a ton of cash in the store. Which I can't/wouldn't do, but hoped it that wouldn't have any bearing on the treatment I received for their services other than sales. I was wrong. read more

I have been looking forward to leaving this review since I went in to Martin and Martin and met Greg Jr. last week. He is a very straight-forward and honest business man. I had a diamond that I had just purchased and I wanted it set in my engagement ring, plus some resizing and rhodium plating. He gave me a very fair quote and promised to have the work completed in a week, which I couldn't be happier about. I picked up my ring and brought it home, but I just wasn't as happy with the new head as I thought I would be. I called Greg and expressed my concerns and he suggested I come in since I had trouble explaining my issue. I brought the ring in the next day and explained how I felt the head was not fitting the shape of my stone properly. It was the correct head for that size stone, but it seemed that my stone was just a little wider than typical. Greg brought the ring back to his goldsmith and, within five minutes, the goldsmith had done some work to the head and my diamond looked, and still looks, spectacular! read more

I had stopped in twice before to have batteries replaced in watches. Always had great help and they quickly and efficiently did the job. So finally I decided to have them resize my wedding band that had been cut off due to a surgery the year before. The gentlemen I worked with was friendly and knowledgeable. He even knew the man who made my ring personally. Which was deep since I am from the east coast and my ring had been purchased almost 18 years prior. Jewelry quality review: Exceptional jewelry, mountings, and quality. I've never seen anything shotty nor low-end "mall" quality here. They buy substantial stones, gold, and more. I am extremely pleased, probably 5 years later, with my "engagement" ring that I wear as a wedding ring. It's a large carat diamond with halo and a split "X" band. I get compliments constantly and besides that, I adore looking at it. It's a forever ring, for sure. Greg Jr., I believe, was very helpful in choosing a mounting etc. BUT......... What concerns me about this place, and the reason I will NOT return, is on both occasions the business manager has been forceful, rude, and nasty. He is downright horrible and I never want to see him again. I don't know if this is his sales tactic but he likes belittling rings purchased elsewhere and is excessively forceful with "trade-in" talk. --About 5 years ago: The first instance, he told me my mall ring was a poor deal for the money and he urged me to return it to the store and buy his ring. Fine, I believed him and the Martin and Martin ring for a few hundred dollars more money, was a better deal. But he was horribly pompous and rude about it. There's gentle pressure that's ok with a business transaction to cinch the deal, but this guy catapults beyond that, to nastiness. See the next point.... --The second instance, a few months ago, I bring in my mother's expensive diamond ring that she gave to me as a pre-inheritance. I told him over the phone I'd appreciate a quick turn around with resizing given the cost of the ring ($15K). I got rudeness and belittling. In a curt tone, "We deal with that price range all the time. It's nothing. We can't rush it because it's not even that expensive to us." - so to speak. I was shocked by his tone, like he's talking to someone he hates. Stupidly, I brought it in because overall I had good memories from this place. He virtually assaults me that they can't resize it, the main stone has flaws and cracks. I just didn't believe that a small sizing adjustment would matter that much with a stone with minor flaws. He was a total assh*le about it, and I don't use that word lightly ever! He was forceful that he wanted me to trade it in instead (of course!) and that they would NOT work on it. I explained that my mother was on her possible death bed in the hospital, and she gave this to me as a precious last-minute gift. I wouldn't get rid of it just because of a few flaws that most people can't see with the naked eye. I was nearly in tears, but I didn't want him to win. I explained her GRAVE health yet again. He didn't give a sh*t, not one percent. Greg Jr. came in and listened and didn't say a word to console me from the manager's harsh words. I told him there's no way I will trade it in for a less flawed stone, it's *sentimental*. I left in disgust and will never return. That's after spending $3500 on my first wedding ring with them five years ago. We will never be back. I rather buy costume jewelry the rest of my life than come back to deal with such a despicable, inhumane person. He could have said, "I'm very sorry about your mother's health, but we cannot work on this resizing because of the main stone's flaws. That's our policy. Goodbye." But he chose the a-hole way. I will never forgive this place for that. I called around and Coren Jeweler's (on 95th in Evergreen Park), resized it for a nominal fee ($75). I'm sure other places would have too, but they're the first place I called. They said it has minor flaws but nothing that would be too risky to work with, to resize it. They resized it perfectly but it was on the small size, for FREE they readjusted the size. They could not believe how I was treated at M&M, especially considering my mother's health. The best jeweler for price, quality, and trustworthiness. 2 general points of reference for giving this jeweler 5 starts: ENGAGEMENT RING - I went to 5 places, and Greg Martin (the owner) not only provided me with the best diamond and setting, but the best price. He bought a diamond at a show based upon my general specs, and sold it to me AT COST. He told me that he was banking on future business--that I'll need his services again and this first impression meant a lot to him. Frankly, I don't know if it was ACTUALLY at cost, but it was the cheapest price nonetheless. Quality, however, was NOT sacrificed. As I write this review, my wife and I have been married 6 years, and she STILL gets compliments on the. Financially, my means are limited. Through Greg, I was able to have a ring within my budget that looks like I spent double what I actually paid. WEDDING JEWELRY - There is a tradition in my family that my parents give my soon-to-be wife jewelry to wear. My mom thought it would be nice to give my wife the jewelry she (my mom) wore when she got married. We found out that my wife wanted to wear something with Ruby's in it, although she did not know my mom's plan to give her this old antique jewelry. We tried to replace the stones in my mom's set with Ruby's because we assumed that's what my wife would like. GREG AND HIS STAFF TOOK ONE LOOK AT THE SET AND TURNED AWAY OUR BUSINESS. He wouldn't take our money because he said that he did not think we should alter such an antique set because "you can't find jewelry like this anymore." He understood that he was losing money by refusing to do it but he asked us to trust his judgement and give my wife the jewelry as is. Let's start this story by saying I have never "loved" jewelry. My original engagement ring was a let's go to Jared's and pick something. I decided to upgrade and maybe find something I actually like and remembered to put on in the morning. Because the employees are not commission based, there is no sales pressure to pick something and be on your way. Dawn spent an hour pulling out every case of rings until I said "OHHHH" .....ya that was my moment...I fell in love for the first time with a ring at Martin and Martin.
