I had not been in Marty's for years and was amazed by how many great gourmet items they had when I walked in! I was there for a 4pk of Eden Cider, but still browsed all of the food. The Deli at Marty's is phenomenal. The ladies who run it are as sweet as can be and will make a sandwich that will knock your socks off. I've had just about everything on the menu and it's all been top notch Unfortunately, the rest of the store is not handled with the best customer service. The old dudes at the front are as rude to customers as they are to each other. Snarky remarks, condescending tones, and poor customer service is the norm at Marty's. The cashiers barely open their mouths. I've never heard a "thank you" or a "you're welcome" in all my time there. They barely can mutter the price of your items. I'm sorry if dodgeball was tough for them in high school but I still expect some courtesy. Just last week I watched one of the old dudes (the one who looks like he came back from a Sam Elliott look alike contest) bump into a customer and not apologize. Not only that but the customer who I would assume is a decent human being apologized to the bearded loser and the bearded loser had some snarky remark under his breath. I saw pastrami sandwich mentioned in reviews. Visited store for first time as always thought it was only a beer, wine , liquor store. Well Italian specialties, and other specialties you can't find elsewhere... very impressive selections... Then wine, beer great selections. Then a deli with fresh sandwiches and cooked foods? I ordered the Brooklyn Pastrami hot sandwich on dark rye and was excellent hot version .... More pastrami would be better.. I think a cold version might have been better Melted cheese too... Cole slaw had nice taste with sandwich. Pickle was a good deli one and not a jar one... other sandwiches look good too... deli person very accommodating with bread options, etc. read more

Just went in to order sandwiches. Its around 11am. They've been open for hours. They literally told me they didn't feel like making the muffaletta sandwich because they were doing other things. Then I tried to order something else and they completely ignored me. When I got their attention, they said "I'm not sure you're going to want to wait." I said "15 minutes?" She just said "longer". And just looked at me. A stand off. She was basically telling if I really wanted to inconvenience her and make the sandwiches she was going to make it take as long as she possibly could. Marty's sandwiches are delicious but the customer service is non existent. I just went to get a sandwich, at 12:15... lunch time, sandwich time... you would think the people at the sandwich counter would be at attention. I stood there for about 8 minutes waiting to someone to acknowledge me, instead it was like they were deliberately avoiding eye contact. I couldn't find a menu of their sandwiches. There were cards to download their app and "skip the line". There was no line... there was me, wanting a sandwich, standing at a deli. I ended up leaving... now I don't have time left in my lunch break to get a decent lunch and have resorted to McDonald's. I'm disappointed to say the least. If your job is to make lunch, you should be awake, alert and ready to help your customers at lunch time. Ugh. read more

Love this place! Is it indeed a mix of a Liquor store and an Italian grocery. It's perfect. I've been here many times, because I'm within walking distance of Martys. I also have their Wine Card, which lets you sample different wines from a neat little machine, using a points system. Admittedly, I haven't used mine in a few months, but I aim to remedy that. The BOOZE: Marty's has a vast selection of Wines. You probably won't leave empty handed, as they carry most everything you could probably want. All regions, all types. The staff is knowledgeable about their product as well. They have a discount aisle, where you can typically grab a bottle that has been marked down by 50% or more. It's a great way to try a $20 bottle of wine at a $10 price point. I always look down this aisle first. The beer selection is good. The basics, plus a whole bunch of craft stuff. I do enjoy an occasional 6 pack of something unique. But the last two times I went, I was specifically looking for Miller 64 (don't judge), which they didn't have, but a staff worker offered to check the back for me, and I was happy he did that. Nice guy. You can also find wine tasting and samples there, on most weekends. Also, you'll find mixers and hard liquors on the back wall. They have it all. The FOOD: The DELI is amazing! All Boars Head for the cold cuts. Everything you could want. Breads are awesome too! I suggest the French, if you want crusty, chewy goodness of fresh baked bread! Spreads galore... spicy mayo, mustards, relish type stuff too. YUMMM. All the fixins. They have a small grocery section for some specialty foods. Canned and Jars sauces, cookies, candies, Frozen pastas, some frozen seafood, and a host of artisan cheeses. You can easily come here and get everything you need for a wine and cheese party in one stop! Crackers, cheeses, breads, spreads, and a few bottles of vino. OVERALL: Marty's is an easy 5 star choice. With made-to-order sandwiches and a huge selection of booze, I suggest you stop in on any day, order a sandwich, then shop for some wine or beer, while your sandwich is crafted. As a long-time Marty's customer, and one who has bought a lot of wine from them over the years, I have serious reservations about the way we were sold a bottle of wine recently and what it says about Marty's buyers and commitment to quality. Background: Our party included a friend who has completed her wine certification and comes from a wine-growing family in Germany. She was excited to see a Riesling grown and made by her cousin in Germany, but was taken aback to see that it was from 2011 - her sense was that it was not something that should have sat on a shelf for a decade (this is something that the winemaker later confirmed for us). She asked the employee who came over to assist us why a 2011 Riesling Kabinett was on sale (for $30 at that!). The salesperson incorrectly and dismissively said that the 2011 Kabinett was "a library wine" and that there was nothing unusual about such an old Riesling being on sale. The "library wine" label was misleading, this was a wine that someone forgot to sell. Of course we bought it; the unexpected family connection was irresistible. As it turns out, the wine was off - it tasted essentially like dry sherry, was amber - this is a Riesling we're talking about! - and we had to toss it. (Incidentally, the winemaker was quite appalled that this was being sold for anything like $30). Frankly, I expected better of Marty's. If a clearly well-informed buyer has concerns about a wine, engaging with these concerns rather than dismissing them is the least I'd expect. It reflects poorly on Marty's that this was not done, and that despite being warned, they persisted in selling something that, quite literally, was past its well-by date. Not all wines are meant to be stored for decades - and a good wine store would know this. read more

I would've originally given this store a 5/5, since I'm/was a huge fan of the deli department (Boar's Head). I use to order their sandwiches 3-4 per week, but now I'm not sure If I ever want to go back. I'm conflicted because I love their sandwiches. I just want to say, beware of asking questions to their more recent older female worker. I asked her nicely about a question I had regarding the type of bread on another sandwich because I was interested in trying it out for my next order, but she just snapped back at me three times that I had ordered what I ordered. She wasn't even paying attention to my question because, if she had listened, she would have understood that I was only curious about one type of bread from their selection as opposed to complaining about the order I got. I brushed off this encounter with her, but she was just as rude the following day when I ordered another sandwich. The thing that bothers me is that my question was completely unrelated to the bread that was put on my sandwich -- I knew what I had ordered, it was done correctly, and I had no problem with the sandwich at all. Regardless of what question I asked, she made it seem like I was continuously giving her a hard time. Be careful of her, she's as rude as they come. All of that aside, everyone else is friendly. As for sandwich recommendations, I really enjoy the Waltzing Matilda. I would recommend this sandwich to anyone who orders from Boar's Head. read more

The poor rating is for this store's utter disregard for Covid-19 precautions. Many employees, including cashiers, are not wearing masks, and some are very disrespectful of social distancing guidelines. No sign of any effort being made to sanitize carts, or of any other cleaning procedures. They still ask for signatures with a common pen, or touching the screen with your finger. Overall, the impression that this store gave me today (and it used to be one of my favorites) was "If you're worried at all about catching the Corona Virus, we couldn't care less about you." So, if you're worried about exposure to the Corona virus, I'd say avoid Marty's for now. read more

I am handicapped -- I use a walker -- had called to reserve some bottles of something I couldn't find elsewhere. Went to pick them up -- but when I got into the store the "customer service" folks kept telling me to "get in line". "But I am handicapped," I said."Can you help me?" "If you get in line, we will help you." they responded. I turned around and left. Michael came running out and apologized -- he was wonderful, went in to get my order, came back, took my money and then got me change. I do like Marty's there's a lot of great stuff there. The problem is they overcharge on all liquor. All of it, nothing is correctly priced and nothing is really a deal. I want to give this place five stars but they lose one for definitely being priced above Blanchard's in Allston and the late Martignetti's for several of the same items. Their beer selection is amazing. I always love to try new stuff (sadly I've been burned a few times as of late) but they stock Maine Beer Co (the Mo is my favorite) and it's nice and cold already in the fridge. The deli is a cool touch but oddly enough I love their ice cream section. It's the only place I've seen that stocks 10+ flavors of Jeni's ice cream and this is actually cheaper here than it is at Whole Foods or Jeni's own website. They also have an interesting selection of chips, peanut butter, French ketchup, hot sauces and well everything really. Definitely recommend if you're in the Watertown/Newton area. read more

But what I discovered for me that puts them miles above any of the competition....? the gourmet foods !!!!!! I got salmon here that is the best salmon I have had at any establishment either it being seated at a restaurant where im paint through the nose for it ,or at a counter somewhere to get it for my house . P.S. they sell cases of it too !!! I got a case and was blown away at the taste and quality of this stuff . Consumers should note that The Marty's Liquor's clerk Jennifer who dropped the bottle on my foot apologized to me and said sorry, admitting it was her fault. I never dropped the bottle as my arms were full, which is why I asked her to put the bottle in my cart for me. She then placed it in the top section of the cart, and it went through the hole and onto my foot with some force. I asked her to put it in my cart because my hands were full, I didn't say pass it to me. It was an accident (an honest mistake I believe) on her part, and she wasn't careful with how she placed the bottle. I believe Marty's is responsible. It took 8 months for my nail to grow back and I was in pain for over a month. It strikes me as very disrespectful that this company did not respond to the email I sent or the letter I sent by certified mail. It was ONLY when I wrote this on Yelp that I got a response. I'd be very interested in seeing this security tape myself, as apparently we have very different views of what happened. Beyond the $403.90 in medical bills, there is the principle of this issue. The fact that the clerk was the only person who apologized for what happened. It is true that the clerk helped me after she apologized, and I appreciated her helping me, but that doesn't change the fact that I do not believe this incident was not my fault It is my opinion that a business where this happened at the VERY least owed me the courtesy of a direct response to my certified letter, whether they thought it was their fault or not-- they could have written to me directly what they wrote here. It was only when their public identity was mentioned on Yelp that they responded. I didn't write the review to get a response from them, I wrote the review because I felt I was treated with disrespect and wanted to express that, and felt others should know. None of my friends will shop there, there are plenty of other places to buy wine! P.s. Several people noted that my review was helpful. To those who said it was funny, I don't appreciate or understand that. I'm an honest, respectable person who deserves to be treated well and with respect at any store, just like any consumer. I went to Marty's Liquor next to Whole Foods in Newton once over a year ago. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon with the goal of purchasing three bottles of wine for a dinner party that night. I picked my selection and went to the check out where i handed over my driver's license. i have a Virginia license, but it's not a cheap laminated one, it has a security strip, holograms and everything. first the cashier examined it. then her supervisor came over and examined it. then he ran it through some scanning machine. nothing being said to me at this point except some huffing about out of staters. then the supervisor makes a phone call, to whom i can't imagine. then he looks in a book of licenses. then he storms over to me and screams at me not to come back until i have a valid license. what?! i stood there gaping at him, absolutely gaping. they told me i should carry my passport with me as out of state licenses are unacceptable as a form of identification in Massachusetts. A friend of mine went there with her New Jersey license to see what would happen and they told her that the picture wasn't her and if she came back with it they would cut it up. the moral of the story is that no one should ever shop there. i can't imagine being treated like that as a PAYING CUSTOMER. unreal. read more

Prior to my most recent experience, I thought very highly of Marty's Liquor - amazing beer selection, friendly and knowledgeable beer staff, fun wines, great cheeses. But my recent trip with my younger brother was despicable, at best. My brother and I picked up approximately 100 dollars worth of high quality beer, per usual, and were at the check-out line going through the motions. To be nice, I proffered my ID before the cashier even asked. He took it without a word and went through a lengthy grilling process - scanning it with a machine connected to a laptop, checking it for heaven's knows what and essentially treating me like I'm a minor. Mind you, I am 25 years old, I currently live in Somerville and was born and raised in Lexington - Mass resident through and through. OK, you're thinking, not such a big deal. I agree. BUT, when they took my brother's ID, they went to the Nth degree to examine his ID. My brother is 21 and grew up, just like me, around Boston. He, too, has a Mass license and they treated him even worse! After 10 painstaking minutes, they gave back his ID and said they could not sell him beer. When I protested, they literally barked at me and told me to watch myself! When it came to pass that I had already paid for my items - the manager attempted to confiscate them saying I was providing for a minor. Right, providing my 21 year old brother with expensive beer, of course. We somehow calmly removed ourselves from the situation but I am thoroughly disgusted by the service. In fact, this was by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced, anywhere. I will never recommend this place to anyone again. If I could give this less than one star, I most certainly would. read more

I love this place, not only because of the quiet aisles of booze I can wander through, but also for that delicious smell! Upon walking in here I am overcome with memories of the old Bread and Circus and the way it used to welcome it's small customers with exotic and foreign candies. This is not your average liquor store, it is much more than that. In addition to bud light and a huge selection of wines, they also offer specialty foods, imported oils, teas, Iggy's breads, and like I said, amazing little candies. There is also a deli in the back which I've yet to sample, but it looks good, and makes sandwiches to order. As far as the ID problem, they now have a machine that reads your out-of-state license (or any other I presume) in a jiffy, getting you on your way as quick as can be. But my favorite part about Marty's is the annex redemption center outside to the left, where you can go with no hassle to collect the profits of your addictions. It doesn't smell like nasty beer and has a window to throw the cardboard boxes when you're done. read more

A really good packie with a touch of Pretentious Fuck Syndrome. Certainly, considering the area, I expect some of that attitude from other customers but not so much from the staff. Maybe I got a little turned off by me and my husband - who happens to be a Person of Color (tm) - being shadowed around the store by an assistant manager type with wide, scared eyes who disappeared every time I turned around to ask for help finding something. I'm not sure why. Were we meandering menacingly? Should I have grabbed a cart instead of a basket? Maybe because we were dressed in jeans and t-shirts on a Saturday. I don't know, whatever. We're new to Newton. Maybe there's a dress code we don't know about. He made sure to stand right at the end of the register and stare down into our basket as I unloaded our purchases onto the counter. Yes, that's right. After all that, a half-pound of olive salad from the deli (this store's saving grace) and a six-pack of Smuttynose IPA. Okay -- maybe that's the answer: we're cheap. Cheap, skinflint bastards who aren't trying to impress anyone in the checkout line with a cartload of Bolivian chardonnay and California merlot. We're not throwing a garden party this evening, just having a couple slices of pizza, a beer and watching a movie. Marty's has a price and selection ranging across the spectrum of alcoholic wonderment. The deli is indeed a tremendously good thing. But the staff needs to lose the attitude. Marty's is essentially a full-service liquor retailer with a deli wedged in one corner and an afterthought cigar humidor beyond the cash registers. But it's trying to be a specialty liquor store, too. Unfortunately that goes against the essential nature of the full-service liquor store. They're just trying too hard. read more

I am a huge fan of Marty's in Newton. Their liquor selections are great, the staff are knowledgeable of the beers and most especially their wines. And their prices are not off-the-charts, they're "keepin' it real." If I were to tell you I visited a few times a week you might believe I'm a lush. Well, perhaps there's just a very small bit of truth to that... but in reality, I'm there for their Deli section, which is immediately to your left when you enter the store. They have a friendly crew behind the counter making AMAZING (nearly amaze-balls) sandwiches, and you'll be thrilled at the list of sandwiches they can make you. The prepared foods are delicious and perhaps their most unsung hero is their pizzas! Yes, they'll take essentially any meat, any veggie, anything at all... and deliver you a pizza pie to your liking fresh & hot from their own in-house pizza oven. They have great sandwiches, some specialty items for cooking, unparalleled selection of (wine liquor and beer) Tonight I was looking for something new in the beer section. Ben, the tall guy in the beer section was very helpful, and knowledgeable. I told him what I was looking for a beer, and his suggestion was spot on. Move over Julio's liquors Marty's is my new favorite alcohol supplier. The prices are low. The selection is the best I've encountered for both beer and liquor. The staff were super knowledgeable and friendly. The only bad thing is the parking lot which is way too small. So I have to admit today was my first trip here even though I used to live about a mile away and shopped at the Whole Foods next door on a regular basis. God I wish I had known how great this place was when I used to live in Newton. So this was my last stop on my liquor store excursion today and they had the Creme de Violet I was searching for. Not only did they just have it they had 2 different brands to choose from when no other store I called or visited carried it. They literally had every hard to find liquor I have bought or thought about buying here. I even ended up picking up some Batavia Arrack on the suggestion of one of the staff guys after a long discussion about less common cocktail recipes. The beer selection was almost overwhelming although it was well organized and easy to navigate. If you like beer this is the place for you. They have a nice deli and specialty foods if you need those and are good for sauces, rubs, stuff like that. Well stocked with wine, although I'm not much of a wine drinker so I can't say for sure about selection & price, but they sure have a ton. Great booze selections and some of their specials are hard to beat. Big bottle of Knob Creek at one point was $20! I was so happy to find mint infused Maker's Mark on my last visit. Like any retail establishment Marty's offers reasonable service at the very busiest of times and great service all the rest of the time! You may have to ask for help, but that's because it's a large and busy place! The people who work there actually have something to do other than hand-hold troglodytes. The thing with interactions is, you get out of it what you put into it Alex! Before you fire bombed them with your review, did you talk to anyone at the store? How many times have you been there? I take your post quite personally if you haven't noticed, as I've been a regular customer for more than 20 years and I've been treated exceptionally well. I've seen new customers treated exceptionally well also. So if you have any issues I suggest you consider talking to management before you trash something many many other people rely on and care about.... read more

I love Marty's monthly newsletter. They usually recommend 6 wines, all hovering around the $10 mark. Their reviews are well-written and accurate, and I've never gone wrong by choosing one of these. When I am looking for something else, the staff is always helpful, and really knows their stuff. I always leave with something new and interesting. That said, I do wish they'd start a frequent customer program like Vino Divino - keeping track of the wines you've purchased by computer. I'm terrible at remembering those things... Bonus points for the great selection of chocolate and the fact that I can buy firewood at the register. read more

I go out of my way to get here. Not that its out of my way - but I would if I needed to. Lets start with beer, shall we? I love beer. I brew beer, I drink beer, I talk about beer, I go to beer fests, I watch movies about beer fests, I rate restaurants based on what they have on tap.. yay beer. Now.. Marty's is partly responsible for this "yay beer" thing I have going on.. I remember the first time I walked in and was in AWE with the selection (this was many years ago now). Aisles upon aisles of brews I'd never heard of.. and NEEDED to try. So for a long time, I attacked the beer section and uncovered many great brews. Eventually I (perhaps after some heavy sampling) wandered over to the other end of the store, where there is, undoubtedly, one of the better delis in the Boston area. Seriously. Great sandwich menu, awesome meats, breads and always something on special. The deli is surrounded by gourmet foods.. mustards, exotic sauces, pastas, snacks, frozen seafoods, spices, chocolates and one HELL of a salami and cheese section. And, you can sample cheeses. Mmmm, cheese - actually they sample alot of things over in that luscious corner of consumable paradise. Several years after beer and sandwiches.. I found myself in the middle of the store. Surrounded by stupid amounts of wine and liquor, and plenty of people to tell you more than you ever wanted to know. Great selection of Malbecs, especially, and then a ridiculously affordable "specials" section. Oh, and there's that closeout section, closer to the beers, but I don't want to pay over $20 a bottle, even if it is marked down from $80. Chances are I won't know the difference yet. I have yet to discover the cigar section - but its there. They also have good firewood (winter) and occasionally good charcoal and smoke woods (summer). Not the Cowboy crap - but they do occasionally stock Nature's Own and some others. The smoking chips are a great deal, even though I'd rather see chunks. Service - the folks wandering around the aisles getting called on the overhead are your resources. And Marty himself hangs out in the store all the time - great guy and knows his STUFF. Beer, wine, liquor, whatever - its fun to quiz him on beers you cannot find. They'll get it, if you really want. Oh and one more thing (there are probably a pile of others I am forgetting) - Clear Flour and Iggy's breads at the checkout area. Kick ass. read more

I just visited Marty's for the first time today, even though I've been working in this area for years. I had a co-worker pick me up a sandwich in the past, but had never visited - you know how you become a creature of habit, you have your go-to wine place for your drive on the way home, or you have your lunch places that you habitually go to... Well today I had to run an errand for my boss and had to pick up some wines. And after my visit here I wanted to throw in my two cents about these guys. *Then* after briefly reading some of these reviews for Marty's before posting mine, I definitely had to based on Alex P's review just a day earlier than my visit to them today. Sorry to hear you think you had bad service, Alex...I don't know where you had the problem. The *main* reason I immediately wanted to post a review to these guys was that I got *stellar* service today. How? I walked into Marty's knowing what red I was going to get as I was asked to get a particular kind. But first I had to get a couple of other sandwiches for lunch (one for me, one for my other boss). I went to the counter, placed my orders and was told to feel free to take a look around and get anything else you need and they'll be here when you get back". Okay. Onto the wine... I had absolutely no idea where to look for the red I was instructed to get due to the excessive aisles of wine and not knowing anything about this particular wine. So I asked one of the employees, who said "No problem, cabernet or merlot"? "Oh boy...I don't know" I responded..."which do you think is the better one?". He told me which one is the best selling of the two and I went with that. Then I told him that "I also need a couple of Pinot Grigio's that are comparable". Without missing a beat, he said "Sure, right this way"...and gave me his recommendation. He carried them all for me to the front when I told him "I'm waiting for a couple of sandwiches still" and told me "no problem, these will be at the front register when you are all set". All with a smile. What an effortless effort that was! Picked up my sandwiches, thanked the lady, and got to gander at some of the cool items they have (dry salamette, duck breast, pepper crusted bacon, nice dips/cheeses, etc., Stonewall kitchen stuff), took my time, got to the counter, talked with the friendly cashier who chatted me up with a nice conversation and giving me the impression he enjoyed his job there and what he did (what a refreshing change!), asked me if I needed a bag or a box, told me a box would probably be easier for me, got me one, wished me well and told me to have a nice day. Is it the cheapest? Probably not, but I had a great experience here, and sometimes, that trumps a $2 difference in price. They just gained a new customer. And I will be back to peruse through all the different wines, try another one of their sandwiches and most likely pick up one or two of their other cool items there. read more
