I hadn't been in in a few months, but went in yesterday and a bottle of wine that in every convenience and liquor store is priced at $8.99 was $11.99! Wedding Order: Working with Joey and Upper Falls was a perfect buying experience! Joey was really responsive over email and by phone to answer any questions. We wanted a difficult range of craft beers including an ask for 60 cans of Wormtown's Be Hoppy. They were able to fulfill our order way under budget and alcohol delivery to a venue in the woods of Westwood was only $7. The huge other benefit is that we were able to return any unopened bottles of wine and packs of beer. After the wedding, we ended up with about $650 of unopened wine that we were able to return no problem!! read more

Great selection of beers and wines. Maybe good if you are looking for a unique brew or bottle for a hard-to-shop-for friend.The hard liquor and nips selections are less impressive, but they have the basics. Prices are not great. I was hoping this place would be pretty cheap since the word "discount" is in the name, but most everything I found was either similar to other stores in the area or rather overpriced. Also, the parking lot is scary. Use an abundance of caution entering and exiting. I'll probably come back if I need something quick, but won't make this a regular stop. read more

A review for a "packy" can go many ways. It really depends on what you drink, so I know it must be hard to please everyone. I think Discount Liquors tries to please everyone, and when you try to be the best at everything, you rarely are superlative overall. Being that I drink wine 90% of the time, this review will be directed towards the wine snob. The few times I've gone in for hard liquor, I've found what I needed (but wasn't blown away either). Here's why I'm giving them 3 stars. They call themselves Discount Liquors and their prices are above MSRP. The only way to get a decent price is to wait for them to do a 20% off sale, and those sales are only for customers buying 6 bottles at once. There's a caveat to those sales though - they are only on full-priced bottles. Last time I was there when they did the 20% off American wine sale, I had a hard time finding 6 different bottles that were eligible for the deal. I was just in over the weekend and got a bottle of port for a friend for $40. When I got home, I went online, and sure enough it is $35 every where else. I live 1 mile away though, so I guess I saved money on gas. That's what I'm telling myself at least. In fairness, they just had an amazing sale on Molly Dooker Carnival Of Love for $35, which beat Gordons and just about every other liquor store in the country. If you live in the area, I'd recommend singing up for the email list. They are part of the Post Road group, which has locations in Wayland (the flagship) and Auburndale (great place for college kids looking for 30's). The only places that can truly be called "discount liquors" would be BJ's Wholesale (the best), followed by Costco and any of the New Hampshire State Liquor Outlets. Until Massachusetts allows places like klwines.com to ship to our state, we will all be limited to shopping at places based on where we live and work. So despite the luke-warm review, I'll still shop at Upper Falls when my stash is running low and I need a fix mainly because of their proximity to my house. read more

Upper Falls Discount is huge liquor store with a vast and terrifying selection of yummy beer. In the way of this is an impressive selection of wine, about which I know precious little. But about the beer. You walk in and see the coolers, and those are nice enough, but as you walk to the back of the store, and bang a right, there's a whole hidden section piled high with cases of a wide variety of beers. All the local staples, but also great German and English beers, and increasingly, favorites from the mountains and the west coast. In mass quantities, if you're up for it. There's more inside the cooler, too. Plus a shelf of Belgian stuff if you're into that sort of thing. And a whole pile of imperial pints of random stuff. As an added bonus, the guys who take bottle returns are exceptionally un-fussy. Pile 'em up and they'll take them, in most cases. Why not five stars? For one, you have to battle the sometimes appallingly gridlocked traffic on Needham Street. For another, the cashiers are invariably surly. But for a beer selection this good, it's worth that, for sure. read more

I love my peoples at Upper Falls Discount Liquors! Mike and Mike are the best! This place has an awesome wine selection, and is my go-to for restocking my stash. If you get 6 or more of a certain region (region rotates through), you get 10% off. The staff really knows their stuff, and will ask if you need help if they see you, but aren't overwhelming or annoying. My only qualm is that I have seen some of my favorite wines at a cheaper place elsewhere. Generally speaking, they do have good prices though. They also have an awesome beer selection, with some of the hard to find craft brews. I'll stop here on my way to snowboard in Vermont, and I will grab a couple 6-packs of some good beers. read more

My friends and I came here to buy some alcohol. The lady at the cashier refused to sell to us even though we are all 21. I had my passport, and my other friends had their state IDs. She was also unnecessarily rude. She told my friend that her ID is fake even though it wasn't. Her tone was very unkind and accusing. We will definitely not come back here. read more

Great wine selection--especially from California and Oregon. Easy parking. Pricing is very good. The price of Duckhorn Merlot or Dom Perignon is approximately $5 and $20 higher than what you pay at BJ's warehouse. I'm not sure how it compares to the new Wegmans' liquor store in Chestnut Hill. Although it's located on Needham Street, which can turn into a parking lot at certain hours, this place is pretty convenient. They have a great selection of wines. Mike is very helpful in providing info and giving suggestions on wine. They also have a great beer selection. Their prices aren't the best, but I'll pay for the convenience. Be sure to sign up for their Postscript newsletter. You'll learn about sales and special events. They have wine and/or beer tastings. Very fun. The tastings typically include food vendors (i.e. Blue Ribbon BBQ at the beer tasting - my husband was in heaven). read more

This is basically the only liquor store I've been to that sells 60 proof triple sec. They have a really big selection of all other alcohols. It IS discounted b/c the wine I get is only 8.99 here whereas other liquor stores it costs around $12. read more

I love this place it's right on the way home from work and I can always find a parking spot. The store has a staggering selection of all types of booze, they even have a wall of cigars and some great olive oil and other things you could possibly need for a get together. I could walk around here for hours but when I know exactly what I need I can find it instantly and without a problem. They have a vast walk in fridge with lots of beer and a huge array of beer out on the floor. There is a huge amount of wine to chose from and the staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. This is pretty much the only place I buy booze when I need it, I suggest you check it out too. read more

Quite possibly the most interesting selection of wines I have found in the area. The owner is very knowledgeable and helped me pick out about 5 bottles based on my description of what my husband and I like to drink (we have pretty different tastes)--all were spot on in terms of how he described them and excellent. Most exciting for me was that they carry orange wine, which I've only found in restaurants. The staff here is always really friendly and helpful I've even called them for help looking for specific scotches or asking for suggestions and they're all really nice and helpful. I have patronized this store for years and everyone on staff has always been extremely professional, helpful, friendly and polite. I say this to counter some of the other review where people seem to take issue with the store's effort to uphold the law. They do have to obtain proper ID from everyone who appears to be under 30. I liked this place because it had a good selection of beer. The customer service here is terrible though. I had a bad day and was picking up some liquor. My friend forgot her ID. We look young so we knew it was a stretch. She stayed in the car but they saw her so they told me she had to come in also. I explained the situation and then proceeded to leave because I know stores have to be careful. One of the workers or whoever then proceeded to follow me outside to yell at me and tell me to never come back to the store. I never argued with anyone and wasn't anything except respectful. Just because I'm young doesn't mean I'll accept being treated that way. We considered driving back after getting her ID but decided we didn't want to spend our money there anyways. I wrote a complaint email but never got a response. They may still be convenient but I'll never step foot in there again. read more

My husband had a similar bad experience to the ones listed here. Because he is a foreigner, my husband used his passport as his ID. Once my husband pulled out his passport, which by the way, was still valid, the "manager" flipped through every page of the document, examining the visas and stamps in there, and said that the passport was a fake. I have stopped in several times to pick up some wine, and each time I have been disappointed in their wines. I usually can not find any names I am familiar with, and when I've commented on this, I've been told they like to carry wines that other people don't know about yet...they don't want the wines everyone has. I've gone to this place several times. I'm 30 years old and 4'6", so I get carded everywhere. I find it hard to believe all these posts from people who just "forgot" or "didn't have" their IDs on them. I think it is more likely that you WERE trying to purchase booze illegally, and got caught, and were embarrassed. You did that to yourself. How many legal adults do you know that go around without their IDs? Also, as for the terrible customer service? Never seen that, either. All the nice beers are overpriced. Have huge signs on sale for special beers, although in actuality the price is even higher than in a bar. The word "Discount" is meaningless. However, with that being said, this is not why one star. Very poor customer service to the point, where I will never shop there again. My wife was refused service because she did not have two forms of ids. We moved out of state and did not have MA license, but had an out of state valid license. My wife is 34 years old. I came into the store with our child because it was taking very long. A couple with valid IDs, professionally dressed, with a child, not buying some cheap liquor, but a specialty beer. We are both professionals, so at least in my opinion we have adequate appearance. Does this seem reasonable basis for refusal? We were polite; initially we were thinking that we do not understand something. I asked the cashier/owner whether it was a state law, city of Newton law just because we were new to the area. I assume she is an owner or a partial owner by the way she carried herself. Right in front of us an older lady (40 y.o.) buys several bottles of hard cheap liquor and cashier never asks her for any form of id, not even a single id whereas we were asked for two forms. My wife asks if they have spring water and adds "or do we need two forms of ids for that, too?". Cashier/Owner says that she is not going to sell us anything. The sad thing is that this is as much as we have said; we have never said anything insulting. At this point, it was a matter of principle, and I asked her for her name or a written reason for refusal. Obviously, she declined. We are in the process of filing a complaint with the BBB. read more

I lived in Mass. for a few years after college and had the misfortune of patronizing this archetype of mediocrity managed by classless reactionaries. The store has an average selection and their prices are just as high as they are everywhere else in MA. When I moved to the area I still had a PA drivers license, and this store refused to accept it despite the fact that I had several other forms of photo I.D. I came back the next time with my federally issued passport and they still wouldn't accept it, like a MA drivers license is somehow a superior ironclad indicator that someone is old enough to buy liquor. Did they really think I would go to the trouble of forging a United States passport (complete with visas) just to buy some booze for an underaged rager or something? The people who run this store typify the standoffish xenophobic Massachusetts attitude I encountered during my years in the state. This place is definitely not "discount." It's actually on the pricey side. I usually end up going here because it's close, not because the (wine) selection is anything that great. They do have a lot of good beers, but not a good wine selection at all. And it's rather pricey. The parking lot is really hard to maneuver, and the customer service is pretty bad (they usually ignore you), but I've kept going on those days when I just don't feel like driving far, so I've been a pretty regular customer. But today is the last time I set foot in that store. The employees were incredibly rude and I couldn't even believe they were capable of speaking to their customers in the way they did. They also have a very strict store carding policy, so don't try going there with your kids, or with anyone that doesn't have their ID on them. Today I went in there with my husband and I went inside to help him because we were getting two cases of beer and that was too much for my husband to carry by himself. When we went up to pay, my husband gave them his ID but then they asked for mine. Now I am 30 years old and don't exactly look young. I said that I didn't have my wallet on me. They immediately started being rude to us and talking to us as if we were a couple of fifteen year olds up to something sneaky. Dirty looks and everything. They kept saying that it was the law and that we were trying to break the law. This happens to be a total lie. You can read on the Massachusetts gov page (http://www.mass.gov/abcc/faqs.htm#j2) that each store decides their own carding policy. It's not mandated by law whatsoever. So they should have stated that it was their store policy and that would have been fine. But they tried to humiliate us in front of the whole line of people making it look like we were trying to do something illegal. The reaction was totally unprovoked. All we were trying to do was pay for what we wanted to buy. There was no reason for them to have reacted so rudely. It's amazing to me that store employees are capable of even speaking to their clients in that way. We just walked out feeling totally bullied and victimized. And we will never be setting foot in there again. They have lost two regular customers for life. read more

i have been to a great deal of liquor stores, and this place is THE BEST. i went there to get my boyfriend a bottle of johnny walker blue label, because of the great price and the free engraving for our anniversary. our anniversary was only in 3 days, and i knew that the engraving would take 7-10 days to complete, but the people there were FANTASTIC. the salesman pushed my order through and I was able to pick it up the next day! i live about a block from a liquor store in auburndale, which is a good 15 min away from upper liquors (on needham st), and i am definitely going to this place instead. fantastic, friendliest staff!!!!!!!!! read more
