I admit I don't know much about Cuban food, but after eating here for breakfast a couple of times, I think I may be part Cuban. The food here is wonderful. This morning we each got a 'cafe con leche' which was exceptionally strong & flavorful espresso mixed with lots of milk & sugar. It was so excellent. The pastry I got was a 'guava & cheese pastelito' which is one if the best things I e ever tasted. I don't speak any Spanish & had fun trying to convey what we wished to eat. I just met Maruchi and I love her already! A quick search online and a careful look at fellow Yelpers led us to this wonderful gem in Hialeah. Deli/cafeteria style the sights wow you as you come in. There's an army of friendly and knowledgeable associates behind a wonderful counter. You select your protein, side dishes and either take it home immediately , or get a table, sit down and your server will get it ready for you quickly. The food was wonderful. We both opted for Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), one with Congrí (rice cooked with red beans) and Yuca al Mojo, and the other with Moros (rice cooked with black beans, and Maduros (fried ripe plantain). We also added sliced Aguacate (avocado), the firm but creamy sweet Florida version. The food tasted amazing. The portions were huge, we brought back plenty to our hotel room for a delicious late night snack. After eating we noticed the Lechón (roasted pork) and Chicharrón (crispy pork belly and rinds) that we wished one had ordered instead and shared. But we were really craving Ropa Vieja. We will probably stop back here after our cruise Service was extraordinarily friendly. The servers answered all our questions, and we had a lot, and made recommendations. There's a desert counter where we spent a considerable amount of time but not too much money before we decided on Coconut Flan, Guava & Cream Cheese Pastelito, and a Coconut Puff Pastry Pastelito. Located just a few minutes' taxi ride Miami Airport, Maruch Cafeteria is a perfect example of how real Cuban food can be sampled from a working class perspective, rather than from the haute cuisine perspective, or even the "real restaurant" approach, as Maruch is more akin to the million delis that dot New York City with hot food, but from a Cuban angle. There are about twenty small tables, and a small army of Cuban women of all shades, ages and shapes working behind the hot food counter, which is an array of Cuban food ranging from the kind of food that you'll see at any Cuban restaurant around the world, such as ropa vieja, tostones, black bean soup, yucca, etc., to less common but still very Cuban items such as vaca frita, ajiaco, tasajo, chicharron and more. If it is a sandwich that one desires, it is custom-made on the spot, and they offer the ubiquitous Cuban hot pressed sandwich or the lesser known, but tastier (at least to my taste) medianoche sandwich. As you enter Maruch, the smell of garlic and cumin warn you that this is the real deal, and all the food (except for desserts) are behind a hot food counter with handwritten Spanish signs above each item. The prices are also written above each item, and range from $4.95 to $9.95 or so for a plate. A plate usually includes one main item (pork, fish, chicken, goat, and beef) and two sides, plus rice and black beans or congri (both the congri made with black beans and the one from Oriente province made with red beans). Congri is sort of a Cuban version of dirty rice, as the rice and beans are cooked together, and the white rice turns black or red, depending on the bean used. There are several items of each kind of meat, such as 2-3 kinds of fish choices, 3-4 pork choices, etc. The meat portions are huge. In fact they are an exaggeration of culinary offering and would probably distress a hoity toity restaurant critic, but fit perfectly into the cultural norm of a neighborhood Cuban hole in the wall, mom & pop restaurant cafeteria, such as Maruch is. When I say big, I mean really huge. Imagine a steak the size of a laptop screen, or a piece of fish 2-3 times the size that one normally gets in a restaurant. In fact, I have never seen bigger portions of food served in any Cuban restaurant, or any other for that matter, anywhere else in the gazillions of restaurants that I have been in my life. These are Texas-sized portions times two! When I last visited Maruch, I ordered chuleta de puerco, rice and black beans, yucca con mojo, platanos fritos, boniato and a couple of beers. It was an enormous meal; an exaggeration of food to a spectacular degree and I enjoyed every bit of it. The pork was tender and well-seasoned, the black bean soup gave up their garlicky cuminy smell that separates Cuban black beans from all other ethnic Latin American black bean dishes, and the mojo for the boiled yucca was spectacular, reeking of garlic, olive oil, onions, and lime juice. The boniato (Cuban yam) was sweet and tender and the platanos fritos thick and sweet. This orgy of starches really complemented the huge portion of pork, and I ate it all. In spite of the huge meal, afterwards I had a cuatro leches for dessert. "You must try cuatro leches," said in Spanish the raven-haired and green-eyed Cuban waitress, who looked more like a tanned Irish woman than what Hollywood thinks as Cuban. "The owner makes it herself." Cuatro Leches is a taste numbing Cuban dessert cake made from four different kinds of milk (such as cow's milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk, etc.). Cuban culinary urban legend has it that there are ocho leches makers out there, who introduce other milks (such as goat milk, and other milks that one better not ask about) into the recipe, which is not for calorie counters, even at just four milks. I finished my meal with a cafe cubano, or a Cuban coffee, which is a tiny shot of super-sweet espresso with enough caffeine to ensure that I'd be up half the night remembering the orgy of food that I had consumed. read more

Their portions are for giants or for people with 8 stomachs, none of which I've come across lately. I really suggest to order one thing per two people, or just order something each and have lunch for the next week. The ropa vieja here is some of the best I've ever had. They really know how to cook this stuff. Rabo encendio is some of the best I've had. Chuleta de puerco (i think that's what it's called, but it's pictured). But it was reallllllly flavorful and juicy. Again, some of the best I've had. Had a thick rim of fat, still had way more meat than fat, but ... eating the fat is option too, so, chose wisely. BBQ pork (pictured): no bbq sauce but maybe cooked in the BBQ? Not my favorite, drier than the chuelta, my dad ordered it and after trying mine, he said it made more sense to order the chuleta inseam of the BBQ pork, due to the moisture and flavor. Decided to get a full meal at this Cuban cafeteria (I guess that's what I'll call it, El Palacio style). I got ropa vieja (shredded beef in tomato sauce with onions and peppers) with a bunch of carb sides - white rice, fufu de Platano (fufu which is a common good in Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic is a green - unripe or semi ripe plantain mash, most likely of West African origin as they use the same name "fufu" describe this dish in west Africa) and something that I never had before that they call chiccharo (?) which is a soup/stew made out of what they said was green peas (or green lentils, not sure) but I wanted to try something new. This is real Cuban food, no tourists here... and the food is the kind of stuff that Miami Cubans eat on a daily basis, not like some of the trendy places in south beach or little Havana. They have tons of other interesting dishes like crispy skin pork, picadillo, grilled chicken beast loaded idea with grilled onions, and breaded Swiss cheese covered steaks to sides such as pumpkin (calabaza), yucca, sweet plantains, malanga (a tropical root vegetable similar to a less sweet sweet potato), tamales, and tamale cazuela (basically a cornmeal stew), even mashed potatoes. They have a ton of Florida avocados for sale, along with sandwiches, breakfasts, Cuban coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. The chiccharo or green split pea soup is exactly what they said - it tastes just like a typical green split pea soup except half the bowl is filled with a huge chunk of roast pork and a huge piece of smoked Cuban sausage that tasted more like a hot dog, I tasted a little cumin in the soup), the fufu platano was really a surprise , served in two scoops like you would scoop mashed potatoes or Mac and cheese at a southern place, it has an unmistakable plantain/banana taste but with strong sweet and sour flavours, the acidity balancing out a lot of the other foods, I wonder where the sour comes from, maybe lime and the sweetness must just be from the semi-ripe plantains themselves, the color of the fufu is yellow not green), it's delicious and totally unique , not like any other food, the ropa vieja was the protein of the meal, very good chewy and juicy beef with onions and peppers, very plain tasting and something that wouldn't be out of place in almost any European country as the flavours of very generic but at the same time hearty and simply tasty$, the white rice was good too. The thing about Cuban food is that they don't use hot spicy chilies pretty much EVER so the food is all non-spicy, so they make up for it by using more subtle flavours in their food, from herbs and spices and things like bay leaf, onions, garlic, lime and sour orange- which is a special type of orange that grows in Florida and Cuba and was brought from spain, which has a unique taste. We tried the ropa vieja with the white rice and frinoles first. The ropa vieja sauce was more red water than actual ropa vieja sauce. Yet it was salty, not that saucy delicious, sauce you expect with it. The rice and beans, again, so salty! Then we moved on to my favorite dish, vaca frita and moros. The vaca frita was better. It had onions, which I love! A little salty too. The moros were also overly salty but not as much as the white rice and frijoles. I like salt, but this was too much-I love tasting garlic, cilantro and onions. I see all these amazing reviews and want to give it a second try. Maybe they just had an off day. read more

Very generous servings (enough that one meal was plenty to share between two). Cafeteria style so service is very fast. I was a little lost at first because it wasn't regular cafeteria style where you go down the line with a tray. At Maruch, you tell one of the servers what you want and then it is brought out to your table. There's roasted chicken, at least 3 types of pork, beef, salmon, bacalao (cod fish) and rice, yuca and all kinds of food. You can take your food to go or have it taken to a table.
