I always enjoy Maruichi Select. I favored the unagi onigiri for its flavor, and had to get the matcha since it's a specialty - it was decent but felt a bit watered down, so I'll try the non-iced variety next time. The onigiri is quite cheap which is always a boon, though the drinks and hot food can feel much more expensive in comparison. Maruichi stands out for the Japanese grocery store across the street and the cafe's authentic feel, with an ambiance informed by areas with low seating and requiring removal of shoes. It's pretty casual with self-service and limited seating, so not ideal for large groups.
Excellent food. Wouldn't have expected it as it is also a store selling other products. The seating area is decently sized. I like how there is a section with traditional seating where you remove shoes and sit on the floor. People were doing work there or eating with friends. Hojicha was great
A Brookline visit always includes a trip to Maruichi Select. Their seasonal strawberry matcha is a must and excited to see what their other seasonal drinks are as fall rolls around. Their warm food is comforting with easy go-to's such as a chicken katsu entree, tempura, and/or onigiri. They also have a little grocery selection of Japanese imports.
This is THE spot! A little hidden Japanese cafe inside a mini grocery mart. How lovely is it to be able to shop, eat a meal, and relax all in one place! The menu is very expansive with options of onigiri, rice bowls, shaved ice, and hot and cold drinks and more. My partner and I ordered the Gyudon and Chicken Katsu curry. The Gyudon was so flavorful that it was instantly devoured. There was plenty of thinly sliced beef and onions with a perfectly poached egg over rice. And the Chicken Katsu was perfectly fried over curry. I loved that there were stewed chicken pieces in the curry. It was double the protein! Additionally, we ordered the three handroll combo for $10.99 which is a solid deal! I love the hand rolls. Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and salmon and avocado were on deck. I came here on a Thursday evening for dinner and arrived around 630PM. Seating is first come first serve. I didn't have a problem finding a table for two. There is plenty of meter parking and even a public parking lot behind the CVS. The area is full of restaurants and shopping to hit up after stopping by Maruichi Select. This is a great spot for a casual date, study session, shopping for Japanese goodies, or grab and go drink! Pro Tip: They sell discounted grab and go meals after 8PM. They are affiliated with the Maruichi Japanese Food and Deli across the street. They also sell discounted sushi at the end of the day.
Stopped by to have a quick bite and study! I will say that they do not have any internet and blocked all the chargers so there are no outlets, so they probably want people to eat here but not study. There is a good amount of tables all over and a section where you have to take off your shoes and eat sitting on the floor. I got the katsudon, which was pretty good for the pricing! A lot of people around me tried a drink from here, so I would try those next time! You pick up your order at a counter and they do have some sauce and toppings that you can use.
Went here on a weekend afternoon and found an extremely long line. I waited in the line and got a strawberry matcha. Other options included hojicha and lunch specials. The line moved quickly...waiting for the drink to be prepared took slightly longer. It was worth the wait!
The food was good but salty. The service was fast and efficient but not very friendly. The place is half market and half restaurant with plenty of seating to grab a quick bite! The drinks were good.
Very cute place with a selection of ready to eat bento boxes and onigiri. I got an iced matcha latte, cold udon, and a mayo tuna onigiri. The onigiri filling was skimpy and too much rice. The udon was refreshing, but lacking substance. Matcha was really good, it comes unsweetened and you can sweeten yourself.
My favorite spot in Coolidge Corner! I always come here with my fiancé for a quick bite. I usually get their matcha (a must!), but I noticed they have a new seasonal drink -- the hojichai. It's hojicha with milk (of your choice) and chai syrup. I took one sip and instantly loved it (the chai flavor is really strong). I don't normally get hojicha, but this drink is definitely one I'll be getting again! My fiancé got the Chashu ajitama onigiri (they were out of the spicy Karaage, our favorite). I think it didn't have as much filling as usual though. It has a great study/work vibe, but something to note: it definitely gets busier on weekends with long lines. If you're planning to grab something that's not from the cafe, it's easier to go to their grocery store across the street.
I went to Maruichi with one of my friends who lives in Coolidge Corner who highly recommended it, and I could not have been more pleasantly surprised! Maruichi is more of a quick service style location with really affordable and delicious options. They had plenty of seating, and we sat in a room that had floor seating. The food was really great. I had the spicy tuna hand roll which was only $4 but came packed with tuna, veggies, and flavor, and was quite a decent size! I also had the Kimichi Gyudon, which had meat that was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I can't wait to come back here and try more on their menu! My friends all had really great things to say about their Udon as well.
Starting off the year with an absolute STELLAR review, here in Brookline! This place excelled in all categories, and I couldn't recommend this place more. Our table had the Curry w/ Tonkatsu, as well as the Tonkatsu Teishoku. The curry was delicious and flavorful, then pork cutlet was crispy and so extremely tasty. I also had a matcha latte, and it was strong and delicious as well. I brought home a mini chirashi (for just $12!!!) filled with different cuts of sushi along a bed of rice. For that price, it was absolutely amazing. All of the food was just 10/10 across the board. The checkout is seamless and the staff are so so sweet. Alongside the cafe, there is a front part where you can shop for some miniscule things, such as chopsticks, tea sets, mini Japanese snacks, etc. It's so cute and a really great experience to bring friends to, as you can bring them to the Maruichi Japanese Market across the street facing the cafe as well. Such a great time here!!!

Amazing tasting tonkatsu curry for a cheap price! The tonkatsu was really moist, juicy, and delicious! Great breading and crisp! The curry is phenomenal! Very flavorful with a hint of sweetness! The curry is not spicy (wish they have an option for that). For ~$13 for the dish, it was pretty filling! I appreciate the Japanese style seatings and aesthetics. (Small note: They always run out of water every time I go). The staff were nice and quick with the food. I would recommend going there as a third place/hangout spot with your friends! Matcha was creamy and not sweet, which was perfect for me. The spicy karaage onigiri was tasty but overpriced for what it was. The space is very open and bustling and I would definitely go again! read more
A super cute cafe! It gets very crowded on the weekends but the line moves fairly quickly. There's a whole wall of Harney & Sons tea tins that you can buy. The onigiri meal set is super reasonable--it's one or two onigiri ($8.99 or $12.99 respectively) with miso soup and hot green tea. I got the chashu with egg and takana, which are pickled greens. Both are pretty big. The tea is super high quality and wasn't bitter like most green tea. I also got the guava matcha drink which was good. The space is really cute. There's a little seating area where you can sit on the floor after you remove your shoes. There's a refrigerated section with ready-made onigiri (including pickled plum, which I'm OBSESSED with and forgot to buy when I left) and desserts. Will have to come back to try them! read more

I will never get tired of coming to Maruichi's! It is located across the street from their market, in Brookline. **Maruichi Select is their cafe + food & Maruichi Food&Deli is their grocery store market** Their matcha is incredible and superior to most places in the Boston area. I used to frequent here at least once a week to get their matcha. Today, I decided to try their seasonal mango matcha iced latte and it did not disappoint at all! It was super refreshing and is the perfect drink to sip on, on a nice summer hot day. The mango purée paired well with the matcha and I would most definitely get this again! I actually went in here twice today haha because I peeped that they had matcha milk jam in stock, which I have been searching for a store that had it in the area but was unsuccessful for over a year. So I was a happy camper today when I was able to locate it in store! I can't wait to try it with strawberries and on toast. Their onigiris are tasty & HUGE; if you need spicy mayo, they have plenty of condiments available with plastic sauce cups. I have tried their chirashis bowls before in the past and highly recommend. Fish is high quality. Great cafe place to visit to grab a coffee or matcha and a snack (maybe even lunch because everything here is super yum!). They've got plenty of seating here and are open till 9pm usually. Parking: Lots of parking available, mostly meters. My partner and I have gotten sweets and drinks to-go here before, but have been meaning to dine in for years. We got a maruichi gyudon (large), katsudon, and spicy karaage onigiri - TASTE: 4/5 - the washugyu beef in the gyudon was the star of the show, so tasty! Enjoyed the onions and eggs in the katsudon, and the spicy karaage chicken plus the sauce in the onigiri was flavorful. Would come back to try more dishes TEXTURE: 4/5 - the beef was sliced thin and tender, and the pork cutlet was fried nicely. Both entrees came w moist, short-grain rice PRICE: 5/5 - fair prices. Other places would definitely mark these dishes up higher SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - great for lunch, both entrees were heavy on the rice SERVICE: 4/5 - walked in at 11:30am on a Sunday, anticipating a packed space. Ordered at the counter, glad there were a couple of open tables for us to choose from, and our food came out (piping hot, caution lol) 15min later ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 - busy but neat dynamic w the store up front and restaurant in back. I love this place more and more with each visit. In the past year or so this cafe/restaurant has expanded its menu and collaborations. In terms of their regular menu, I absolutely love their hand rolls (both the regular and premium versions). Their wasabi is also so fresh that it is both delicious and painful. Additionally, I have also recently tried their chirashi bowls and traditional curry (paired with a potato croquette) - I've greatly enjoyed these dishes as well. For the drink menu - I love their matcha and hojicha lattes. Also in the summer/warmer months they have DELICIOUS shaved ice!!! (Favorite flavor: mango) The only items I find to only be "okay" would be their onigiri. I feel that many of them lack in filling. This week, Maruichi Select had a collaboration with Yamamotoyama (feat Eitaro and Ninben) that was absolutely wonderful !!!!!!! The pop event featured new matcha flavors, freshly prepared samples of red bean dorayaki, and Ninben Dashi Ochazuke. I ordered the guava matcha soda which was very yummy and refreshing. It paired well with the ochazuke. The tea-infused savory dish was well balanced with salmon, ikura, and roasted seaweed. A perfect meal for a chilly fall day! I also sampled the featured matcha lattes which were creamy and nutty and delicious!!!! The space features various seating options and plenty of items made in-house or from various bakeries. I LOVE Maruichi! I kind of slept on this place since I've only came during the night and the premade food they would usually have is sold out. When I went in the morning, it was just a different vibe and I loved it so much! When I heard of the summer seasonal matcha, I had to come and try it! I went 3 times in a week just for this mango matcha latte.. ITS THAT GOOD! The matcha quality is legit and it makes me excited for what seasonal matcha they'll have in the future! Service is fast and the staff is kind. I can sit here for hours reading my book and enjoy the calm atmosphere of this place. They have so many things such as made-to-order foods, pre-made foods, Japanese snacks, tea, and of course seating. Highly recommend this place to hangout or even going solo! read more

was visiting Boston and this was on our list of must try places! they have maruichi select which has a cafe and some snacks, then across the street there's more of a grocery story. I ordered their gyudon rice bowl and it was delicious. every bite was just as good as the last. there's plenty of seating inside and the ambiance is very calming and serene. read more

Quaint little spot for specialty products. Also offers a wide variety of products and food to either dine in or to go. Staff are very friendly and helpful (pro tip, the tea is with real tea leaves and strong, they accommodated my request for adding hot water after my first cup). The only drawback if trying to do work is no wifi available. read more
Great place for Japanese Specialty items and a really cute dining area for their hot foods. I really like the gyudon and the curry that they have here. Good here is absolutely delicious with the only downside of how busy it gets sometimes. The food ranges from variety of japanese curry sets to sushi and hand rolls. The portion is good and the price is not too expensive (13-20 dollars around per meal) The best thing here is the matcha or hojicha latte. Delicious and such a strong flavor. Service sometimes can be a little slow but they are always very friendly. You order at counter and wait for your food to be called. read more

this is my favorite cafe and place to go in Boston. I've been here at least 5 times now, and it's one of my favorite places to do work! they don't have wifi unfortunately though I love love love their cafe options!!! Food and drinks are super affordable for the Boston area, and I adore the matcha and hojicha lattes (strong and tasty flavors). They also only charge 25 cents for alternative milks which I appreciate. My favorite food here are there handrolls: for a regular set of 3, it's only about $12 and they give you SO much fish in one roll. It is also super fresh and the flavor combos are really yummy! The spicy tuna and salmon ones are my favorite. They also have pre-packaged meals and a fresh menu of ramen, rice bowls, and sushi bowls. Refrigerated, grab-and-go and fresh onigiri are available too. The food is a good portion and is filling without being over-stuffing/heavy. Highly recommend Maruichi, I tell all my friends about it !!! read more

Maruichi Select... Why haven't I been here sooner?! This place is phenomenal from the food to the vibes and the market! Service is organized and convenient. Can order your food at the counter, secure seating/a table because a place can get crowded and busy!, roam the market to see what goodies they have, then grab and enjoy your yummy food once ready. Doesn't feel like I'm ever wasting time when I'm here because I can occupy myself with other things while waiting. It's such a chill place to also study while enjoying a snack! It's a very cute cafe with comfy seating and warm lighting. Super aesthetically pleasing little market/cafe that I recommend to anybody in Boston who is looking for some of the best matcha lattes or really good curry! I can't wait to go back! read more

I love Maruichi, both this little cafe and the grocery store across the street! It's the best place to get some authentic Japanese food, groceries, and the new things. The quality of fish is extremely high for the handrolls, the matcha is not too sweet, and the udon is chewy. I forgot to take pictures of the food this time but it's the real deal. Cute little store with lots of food/tea/tea-ware. Came in on a super busy day so couldn't sit down, but would love to study here. Everything is very fairly priced, with some sweets less than $5, onigiri around $4, and bigger bowls around $12-18. Onigiri are big and fillings are generous. All around tasty, cheap, cozy place :) read more

pretty good place to grab a quick bite. they have a good variety of dishes, including sushi, onigiri, curry, and baked goods. the coffee is mid but their matcha is pretty decent. great selection of teas as well. service is quick considering the high volume of food and drink they're churning out. plenty of seating, including tatami-style. overall very cute and vibey. mini chirashi 4/5 spicy tuna onigiri 2/5 (the rice was stale and the filling was lacking in flavor and quantity) kougin amann 4.5/5 iced americano 3/5 mango matcha latte 5/5 p.s. of note they don't have public wifi!! i really wish they did :(( read more
This place is so chic. And if ur a fan of Japanese settings and food, u gotta come visit this place. Located in the heart of Coolidge Corner. This spot has everything you need when ur in the mood for japanese food. From light snacks like onigiri (the eel, the chasu and spicy karage were fantastic), to the don bowls (I tried ebi katsu and it's yummy) and the iced matcha (they had cherry flavor when me and my bf visited in march which was a must try). Unique Japanese store with premium Japanese items and a food court/ cafe. Love coming here for lunch after grocery shopping across the street at Maruichi. They offer a variety of food whether you are looking for snack (onigiri) or more filling rice dishes. Grab and go bentos are also available. read more
