Marukai is the OG. If Don Don Donki is the flashy sibling, this place is the quietly cool boutique version that's been holding it down forever. I grew up wandering the aisles with my Grandma, both of us on the hunt for inspiration and fun Japanese finds--and it's basically where my obsession with kakimochi, holiday gift tins, cute toiletries, and clever kitchen gadgets all began. Honestly, I could drop way too much money here, but the prices stretch farther than expected thanks to their "wholesale" concept, and no membership fee means it feels super accessible. I've tried DonKi, but Marukai has my heart--it's familiar, curated, and just...better. IMHO, it's not even close.

This wholesale market used to require a pay membership to access the store, however, started a few years ago, you don't need to pay for any membership and you can walk right in and do your shopping. If you like to shop merchandises from Japan, this is the place to go to. They have produces, meats, seafood, poke, cooked food, bento, sushi, wine, drinks, snack, frozen food, sake, household items. Kitchen items, etc. It is like a mini department store, combined with a supermarket. We really enjoy coming to this place once in a while just to walk around and every time we visited the store, we will buy a bunch of stuffs. Go check this out

    Mochi and Manju.

Went looking for mochi but there wasn't much of a selection. I did find manju to go with what I did find. I went at 7am, and not everything (bento etc) were done being put out. But I'd still go back to check out everything they have. Lots of selection, food and non food items.

Pretty good daily take out menu! If you can go early in the morning everything is made so fresh, lots of different kinds of nigiri sushi, and bentos.

Guarantee to have something for everyone! Always such great grinds! Was Ono for spicy ahi, musubi, takoyaki and roast pork, but that's the one thing was already sold out! Our fault we went later in the day! It's all good tho because cravings was satisfied!

You cannot turn into the Marukai parking lot when on Dillingham heading Diamond Head.

I admire people from Japan because they are polite and courteous; diligent and hard working; reserved and modest; believe in group harmony and avoid confrontation. I can see all these virtues in the owners of Marukai Hawaii, located at 2310 Kamehameha Highway, where Dillingham Boulevard turns into Kam Highway. The Honolulu Rail Transit Project, the Skyline, has started construction of Segment 3, the final Urban Honolulu Phase of what is the largest public infrastructure project in Hawaii's history. For the last five months, Dillingham Boulevard, from Marukai to Alakawa, has turned into what I can only describe as a war-scarred street in Gaza City. I've been a loyal customer of Marukai since they opened their doors as Marukai Wholesale Mart and Marukai Market Place in Ward Village, in the late 1980's. They satisfy my needs with their variety of products and I visit Marukai at least weekly. I love shopping here because surprisingly, prices are sometimes cheaper than at Don Quiote and Times Supermarket. I see troubling signs and worry that the Skyline project is having devastating effects on Marukai and all business', as the rail project has made Dillingham, a street people avoid. This has reduced customer visits to Marukai. The way construction is moving, Dillingham will be a disaster area to business' for at least the next six months. Contractor's have the daunting task of rerouting electrical lines; move storm and sewer lines; build columns, median strips, rail platforms, rail stations and repave roads on the Dillingham corridor. Presently, you cannot turn left into Marukai's main entrance from Dillingham when heading Diamond Head because that section of road has been coned. No left turns allowed in either direction. With all this going on, Marukai and owner, Don Quijote, Company, seem to believe in the empathetic Japanese Kotowaza (Proverb) "Shikata ga nai!" which translates to "it cannot be helped," "it is what it is." Me being a yonsei of Japanese ancestry, have a born and raised in America mentality and describe my feelings about what is happening to Marukai with this contemporary American saying ....."WTF ASS_ _LES!" My guess is that customer visits and total sales to Marukai are down between 15% and 30% and only see things getting worst, before getting better, as the rail project creeps slowly into the urban core. Marukai and Don Quijote, Co., seem to believe in the admirable Japanese proverb "Nanakorobi yaoki!"; which translates to "Fall down seven times, stand up eight." For me, I grew up watching the 1970's TV series Sanford and Son and think Fred Sanford best describes my feelings regarding Marukai's predicament .... "This is the big one Elizabeth! I'm coming to join you!" I can only imagine how painful it is for Marukai and Don Quijote, Company to see pillars of the rail project start going up outside their entrance. They show uncommon perseverance and work hard to make Marukai a desirable destination for shoppers by providing good quality fresh meat, fish, vegetables and Japanese products at competitive prices. They seem to cope, understanding the purpose of the project but I think silently, repeat the Japanese proverb "I no naka no kawazu taikai o shirazu" which translates to "The frog in the well knows nothing of the ocean." The Skyline is up and running from Kapolei to the airport and ridership is fearsomely low. The project presently has a two billion dollar shortfall and is roughly five years behind schedule. The way things are going, this could easily be four billion and seven years. It is highly unlikely, the federal government, Trump administration will provide additional funding for the project, to cover any deficit. The only logical source of revenue, to make up any debit, will be for the City and County of Honolulu to again raise property taxes on business, industrial, resort, apartment and residential zoned property. From my view, the Skyline will not have anywhere near the ridership it needs and will operate with a cavernous deficit. Additionally, the cost of maintaining the system will be astronomical. Rail is a heedless pipedream that will end up being a woeful nightmare. Rail is slowly sucking the life out of property owner's and business' like my beloved Marukai and my fear is that many business' along the route will be R.I.P. casualties of this project. When I was 20, my boss said something profound to me that sums up my feelings about the rail project. I was pushing a wheelbarrow full of fresh mixed concrete up a ramp; lost control and dumped that whole load of concrete on the floor; damaging all the new construction material stored in the area. He ran over screaming ..."WTF!! YOU BETTER GET YOU FR'KIN HEAD OUT OF YOUR FR'KIN ASS AND CLEAN UP THIS FR'KIN MESS!! Which translates to ... "WTF! IF YOU FR'KIN DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE FR'KIN DOING; YOU CAN SORROWFULLY CREATE A RUINOUS FR'KIN MESS!" Five stars to Marukai for their perserverance. Gambate!!

I'm usually a huge fan of Marukai, but today I seen something severely unappetizing! There was mold growing in their fruit sandwiches. One sandwich was literally all moldy. Quality control needs some checking.

Marukai Market is a well-known Japanese grocery store in Kalihi area. Centrally located, it sits close to the Kalihi rail station (currently being built) on Kamehameha Highway. Marukai Market offers a wide range of Japanese food products, snacks, beverages, and household items. Love their food court as it offers a variety of delicious Japanese dishes and snacks, providing customers with an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine. From sushi to a variety of hot bentos and delicious dessert. There's something for everyone to enjoy! Many locals and visitors enjoy shopping there for its unique selection of Japanese goods. It's a great place to find authentic Japanese ingredients and specialty items in Hawaii. Opening its doors to the public was a great move as Marukai Market is able to cater to a broader customer base. I've definitely noticed an increase in foot traffic when I'm shopping there.

The fried chicken is pretty good andI bought these for little over $ 2.

Marukai has been my favorite market for decades. I remember buying oxtails on sale for $1.99. I used to enjoy Marukai more before Times bought them out. There used to be more festivals from Japan that are more elaborate. I still come about 2-3 times a week. They have and elaborate Japanese snack and sweets selection. The bento and buffet style hot foods section is very popular. The meats sold here are quality meats including shabu shabu and yakiniku sliced meats. Marukai is a must to visit during the holidays when they bring in specialty products from Japan. I've overheard tourists raving about their experience here and they describe it as a good stop during their visit. So much is offered here that you just have to visit and explore.

Convenient Japanese market - I like getting my Koshihikari rice here since they have a bigger variety. They have weekly sales here you can check on their website. The fish choices are decent too. When I came last week they had someone who mills your rice to your liking. The food fairs are a good place to get unique items you wouldn't find anywhere else in Hawaii. I enjoyed the last Okinawan fair since I got to try so many new food items and make new dishes. They even have hot dishes available and if you come after 5pm they have a discount. Workers are always so polite and helpful here. Usually not too crowded on the weekdays either unless you come during certain times on the weekend. Plenty of parking and restrooms are clean- located outside right at the entrance. Recommend since you can find pretty much anything you want here!

    Do they sell kanzashi here?

Yes, I have seen kanzashi sold at Marukai especially around Girl's Day & New Years. Also just bought at a craft fair at Kaimuki High School.

Do they sell magi planet popcorn? If so for how much?

Aloha, Meagan! Please feel free to call us at (808) 845-5051 regarding this item, and our in-store team will be happy to assist you. Mahalo!

Do they have gift cards specifically geared for their store?

Aloha. Yes, they do. The Marukai Hawaii Gift Cards are not valid at the California stores and can be purchased at the Customer Service Counter.

Do they have a No MSG section so I don't have to read every package to see if it has MSG or Disodium Glutonate I am allergic so hard to find outside of Whole Foods?

I doubt it. It would be very hard to eat most Japanese items since they invented MSG. Plus the component of MSG comes from seaweed which most Japanese items have inside. So many snacks have MSG too. I would hate to be allergic to it. Sorry.…

Is the meat department still closed?

It was open yesterday when I went.

Why is Marukai Hawaii delicatessen, produce, meat department & seafood department close?

I may be wrong but I heard there cutting back staff because the numbers of Covid19 is high

Anyone know if you need a membership to get inside or need someone who has a membership to get inside?

I can confirm no membership needed at all. But keep in mind, without it you do not get the sale prices. You pay a few cents more. I shop without a membership with no problems.

How does membership work? I saw some some saying it was $10-15? What is included in each?

It is $15 the first year and $10 a year to renew. You can have 2 cards per membership. You also get a monthly mailer with the sales which are Tuesday- Monday every week. That way you can plan when you want to go. I buy a lot of my Japanese food…

I asked the one employee if she was uncomfortable in working in this heat. She replied that they are required to keep the front door open to let customers know it's open, so much of the cooled air escapes. It is crazy warm inside. Service is good. The one employee must stock, look out for customers and ring up sales. There is a half off table that I didn't observe in the past. Some of the drinks in the refrigerated section appear ready to burst. Overall, plus one star for labeling and price tags. I picked up a few sugar free and low calorie drinks to try here.

@fortunefoodfinds: "FRIED my best to only take a few bites! Picked up Turon, Taro Cascaron (or…read moreCarioca as I like to refer to it), n' an Ilocos Empanada from LITTLE MANILA MARKET in Ewa Beach. When you grow up with these desserts or start craving the popular orange Filipino street food, the comfort it brings just puts you in a good mood!" SERVICE: friendly INTERIOR: tiny but mighty with lots of Filipino snacks, sauces, sweets, etc. Organized n' well stocked. EXTERIOR: located at Ho'opili WAIT TIME: none PARKING: street OVERALL COMMENTS: wanted to check out what products n' hot food they had available. Visited on a Saturday, which was good bc I learned that they only offered hot food on the weekends per the lady who was working. I really wanted an Ilocos empanada so I was glad to see that they had it the day I went. I ended up air-frying it when I got home. It was still good even after the egg got double cooked. Had yummy flavor n' I liked that the vinegar it came with had a nice lil' kick of heat. The taro carioca was my favorite. Sweet crackly exterior, chewy inside similar to like mochi, n' you could taste the taro. I like my turon made with a long wrapper; get more crunchy sections from the ends, so this was the kine of turon I like. Also it has a caramelized outside adding extra flavored sweetness n' crunchiness. It's great knowing there is a Filipino market that carries a wide variety of products n' serves hot food too!

This review is strictly based on customer service…read more We stopped in around 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15. When we entered, one employee was wiping down the refrigerator doors while another was seated behind the counter. Unfortunately, we weren't greeted or acknowledged when we walked in. We browsed the store, which had a good selection of Filipino products, and I decided to purchase the onion and chive SkyFlakes crackers along with two banana lumpia. The male employee rang up the crackers and then spoke to the female employee in another language regarding the lumpia. I assumed everything was included in one transaction, but when I walked over to her, I realized I needed to pay separately. When she began putting both lumpia together in foil, I politely asked if they could be wrapped separately. Her reaction made me feel as though my request was an inconvenience. Overall, the transaction itself was fine, but the customer service could be more welcoming. A simple greeting and clearer communication would make a big difference. I also think that when discussing a customer's order, communicating in a language the customer understands would help avoid confusion and make the interaction feel more inclusive.

We are from the Bay Area, so our H Marts are newer and cleaner. This H Mart seemed to be like a Lion's Market from where we come from. They did have some interesting potato chip flavors.

The market is small and run down. They have a small selection of produce but everything was pricey and some of the leafy greens didn't look fresh. I came to look for that mango shaped ice cream that's been trending. I did not find the ice cream but I did buy some beverages and snacks. They have the Lan Fong Yuen coffee milk tea which is from Hong Kong and the H Mart in Kakaako used to sell it but they stopped bringing it in. It was $4.99 each and there were 2 left so I grabbed both, win! They have a large selection of Asian drinks that are chilled and in the boxes. The boxes are stacked and already open so if you see drinks you want, just grab them yourself because there's no service from the staff. I didn't see any staff walking around to unbox or stock products. There's 2 cashiers at check out, they seem friendly but it was also a slow morning since I went before 10AM on a Saturday. Their price tags are yellow and red, same like what you see at Palama Supermarket so I'm guessing it's the same owner. I don't know if they have weekly ads or if they follow the Palama Supermarket pricing but I do like their variety of the Chinese beverages and snacks. I'd come back again to restock my snacks in the future. For parking, the spaces are tight and it's good if you have a compact vehicle. If you have a truck or mid-size SUV, it'll be challenging to get out of the parking lot so good luck. The area is sketch cause there's people sitting and sleeping across the street and by the corner of the block so be careful.

Banchan has been the item that I've always looked forward to whenever I order a plate and never really knew that it had a name and as everyone has their favorite so did I and there are a few places that you can find some yummy banchan I had no idea about Hawaii Banchan Company but know that Elite Peter Y had gotten some snacks from there that I enjoyed and knew that I had to give them a visit one day...where!? You can find them right on Kapiolani though you can barely seem them from the street view as it's not the prominent located spot as they're located right below The Republik right beside the ramp where you can find several parking stalls it shares with other tenants. Open daily except Sunday I love how clean and spacious the shop is where each item is labeled along with price so you know without picking up the item to search makes browsing very easy with items like drinks, snacks both savory and sweet and of course display case filled with various banchan. Love the convenience of this location and now know that I can now find some of the unique items they carry and though I didn't walk away with banchan on this day know that my cravings will certainly bring me back. Thank you!

It's sour with good umami flavor. I'm not a real Korean so I prefer kimchi that is a bit more fresh and not as aged, but I can see how some would like it. I also tried their japchae made in house. Not bad, but definitely not the best I've had, not enough sesame oil for my taste. They also have the popular fried strawberries snacks for sale. I also got a frozen musubi and some abalone congee to try. (The congee is really tasty!) There's also the famous fancy hotel kimchi for sale here if that's what you're into. All the products look interesting!

Who hasn't passed Yong's Wine & Spirits just a step away from Safeway Beretania on one of the busiest corner on Kinau and Piikoi and I thank goodness I haven't given them a visit earlier. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a friendly staff and loved how nice and clean it was, spacious and neatly organized. Here's the place for cravings of all kinds...the variety here is just incredible, though they've been keeping a secret that I just discovered. They have the asian exotic chips that we all have been salty about the bougie lays's and even Oreo! I was in heaven and spent a great amount of time deciding on one...yup one lol! I did get the seaweed flavor and gosh what a yummy crunch snack! It's just a nice convenient location for a place that's open 7 days 7am-9pm knowing that surely puts me in great spirits! Thank you!

Young's Wine & Spirits has a great selection of the two noted alcohols in the name, but they also have many others: soju, seltzers, RTD cocktails, and for me, an amazing selection of beer! It also feels like a convenience store, with essential food items, lots of snacks, and tobacco products. They also sell ice and have an ATM. They regularly rent out a stall in the parking lot to a food truck, which changes periodically. If something interesting is making food that day, it's also easy to pickup dinner. For me, I come for the beer selection. They get a variety of 6-packs, 4-packs, cases, and singles from mostly US breweries. I really appreciate their large selection of local breweries, most of which are available in single cans if you'd like to try a few. Prices are competitive with stores selling similar products. The owners have been super friendly and welcoming to me, both on Instagram and in the store. I appreciated having a few free sample cans to try on more than one occasion. Cheers! It's easy to get here, off Piikoi near Safeway with its own small lot. It's also easy to walk around the fence if you're doing your grocery shopping and want to add in some libations.
