I read about this place in Northern VA Magazine about a year ago and the recommendation did not disappoint. I visited on a cold winter day and was looking for ramen; just the perfect place. The restaurant has a variety of ramens (different base), sushi options, and dishes ranging from bibimbap to tonkatsu and such. At lunch time, they have a ramen combo special, which includes a ramen dish and a side (lots of options to pick from... we went for General Tao's chicken and a spicy tuna sushi roll). We also got an order of musubi (with SPAM), which was average but super enjoyable. I got the spicy miso ramen and it was delicious. The pork tasted like candy and really made the dish. The broth was rich and loaded with noodles and toppings. Our server was very attentive and pleasant and checked on us a couple times. I loved the ambiance because I think the place used to be an old Pizza Hut, so it was a bit nostalgic. You can get ramen and sushi for $18.99 or ramen and a side for $17.99 (I usually get the karaage if I choose this option). You'll probably spend no more than $16 before taxes if you just get ramen or anything else on the menu. * Food: The SUSHI BAR IS NOT OPEN EVERYDAY, so if you want that, check before you go. Almost all ramen bowls come with nitamago, protein, bean sprouts, scallions, and nori. My go-to is the Shio or Spicy Miso, but if you LOVE seafood, get the Seafood Bowl because it comes with A LOT. I was craving ramen and searched for a spot nearby--this place popped up with amazing reviews, so we decided to give it a try. As soon as we walked in, we were seated right away and greeted almost instantly by our server, Sean--who was absolutely incredible! He shared the specials with us and clearly explained what substitutions could and couldn't be made, which I really appreciated. I ordered the vegetarian ramen and was honestly surprised--most places don't do vegetarians justice, but this bowl was fire! The broth was rich, the shiitake fried mushrooms were full of flavor, and the soft-boiled egg was perfect. I didn't even need to add any spice... but I did anyway . My wife got the veggie fried rice, and everything tasted super fresh. My son ordered the eel sushi and devoured it in seconds! Our food came out fast--within 10-15 minutes--and Sean, along with two other team members, checked on us throughout the meal to make sure we were good. Sean was so sweet and attentive that we gave him an extra tip, and he even asked to make sure it wasn't a mistake. Stopped in on a Monday during lunch hour. There was plenty of parking. We were seated right away and offered a high chair or booster seat for my daughter. We tried the booster seat but she ended up preferring to sit on the booth bench by herself like a big girl anyway. Marumen has been our top pick for ramen in Northern Virginia for a super long time - really yummy food, fast service, great menu. However, I feel like things haven't been as great the past few times we've gone over the last year. Ramen is still really delicious and well worth the price. The past few visits though, they have been out of certain items on the menu. We took some friends to Marumen for their first time recently and it was actually so awkward with how much they weren't serving on their menu. My friend that can't eat pork and didn't want ramen had a hard time finding something to eat. No sushi. No draft beer. Then, finally, we thought - maybe we will order a dessert. They have to have those, right? No. Our waiter was very apologetic but I'm wondering why they were out of so much. After a few trips to Japan and several years living in Hawaii, which is home to many authentic ramen spots, I like to think I have a pretty good understanding of what good ramen is. At the very least, I know that this is not good ramen. I stopped in for take-out on an early Friday evening, looking for a warming meal on a cold evening. The place was empty except for the staff of teenagers. They were happy and friendly and the restaurant was clean. The food, however, was a huge disappointment. I had the shoyu ramen with gyoza. Despite claims that the broth is simmered for 14 hours, it is thin and one-dimensional, lacking any depth or complexity of flavor. The gyoza was similarly disappointing, salty flavor and not much else. Another of our group had the chicken katsu, which was prepared very nicely but tasted like water. Fans of Pokémon or other Japanese card games may be interested to know they seem to have a side business selling card packs and largest boxes of some kind. We visited Marumen for a rainy day dinner and it was worth the drive. The ramen is great here. The service could be just a tiny bit better but the food overcompensated for this. I loved the okonomiyaki with seafood. I struggle with some places not putting enough fish in these but this one did not disappoint. The bao buns with pork were absolutely delicious. Great staff and clean dining area, but the food leaves something to be desired. And with the long list of other Ramen places to visit, it may be a while, if at all, until I visit here again. NOTE: they put fish flakes on non-seafood dishes. So if you have a seafood and nut allergy like I do, best to tell them ahead of time so they don't put fish flakes on your food. In my case, it was the karaage and the okonomiyaki that had the flakes. Shio Ramen - Broth was verging on cold and was light on overall richness and flavor. I'd rate it on the lower tier compared to others I've had before. Chasu (pork) was tender and very flavorful, and cut thick....almost too thick for my liking Beef Fried Rice - was good, but beef wasn't distributed evenly and almost clumped together in somewhat big blobs that I had to take a bite out of Karaage - as said before, had fish flakes on it originally, so make sure to let them know of any food allergies ahead of time. It certainly was crunchy, and the sauce used was tasty, but ....not sure how to describe this....they were not "cleanly breaded?" As a result, tons of crunchy pieces, but chicken not as big and juicy as I've had at other places. If I do come back here again, I probably won't order this again even tho it's almost what I always get at a ramen spot. In spite of the food's shortcomings - staff was great, place was clean, and food reasonably priced. Broth is lighter color, flavor and lacks depth it used to gave. Miso and meat flavor very lacking and just gave more of a shin ramen spice/taste. The egg was more hard boiled than soft boiled and there was very little broth (a cup). This was especially sad given it was a cold day and we really wanted some hot broth. Truly my favorite ramen spot and I keep coming back over the years. Great depth of flavor, portion size, and affordable. Cozy interior with the dark wooden tables for seating. The food here is amazing! The flavors are fabulous. My only issue (the reason for 4 stars and not 5) is that the pork belly quality control has been really bad recently. The last few orders I've received, the pork has been hit or miss (occasionally I'll get a piece that's just fat and no pork). But this last order was the worst. I paid extra for "triple pork belly" (aka an extra piece of pork belly), which was about $4 extra with tax. When my order arrived, not only was there no extra pork belly that I ordered, the two pieces provided looked terrible. One was 100% fat, zero meat at all, and the second was about 75% fat and looked mangled. In addition, they had added some shredded brown item to my bowl (mushroom?) that I didn't order (I guess to disguise the fact that they skimped on the pork belly???). Very disappointing. If they can get a handle on the quality control, I'll definitely be back with a 5 star review because the food is delish! read more

My friend wanted ramen for dinner and suggested Marumen, so the three of us stopped by last Friday evening. I didn't expect too much because a lot of ramen restaurants in NoVa are just... OK. I wouldn't go back to most. But to my pleasant surprise, I enjoyed my order and would definitely come back. SHIO RAMEN - 14 This is their salt-based pork broth. I always sip a spoonful of broth before eating anything else to see whether or not I'd be disappointed for the whole meal. The broth was delicious and not overly salty or rich. It was creamy and you can taste the pork flavor well, which warmed me up nicely. Each bowl comes with ramen (duh), half a ramen egg, chashu, and topped with beansprouts, scallions and nori. The ramen were a perfect texture that soaked up the broth well. The chashu is actually a strip of pork belly, which was pretty sizable and fatty. It was so, so tender, and the marinade was perfect. The ramen egg is enjoyable, as usual, and the toppings were fresh and plentiful. So good! Definitely one of the best ramen broths and chashu I've had in VA. Inspite of giving specific directions, the waiter messed up one of our orders and it had to be sent back and we waited for that to come back while the other three dishes got cold. The vegetarian Ramen was pretty good but the one with the braised chicken was not that good as the chicken was very dry and not flavorful at all. The seafood bowl was pretty decent but had a lot more rice than actually seafood in it and lastly, the chicken fried rice was bland.
